Re:Long term solution:
Anybody else think this is a strange topic for Slash-banner-ad-revenue-model-Dot?
Yes, although I suspect that the trained mammals are actively trying to find another revenue model as I type. I think we need an Ask Slashdot about the next internet revenue model after banner ads. I favour a subscription model or "product placement" (something like Deja has been trying -- eg; turn the word "Pepsi" in a message into an affiliate link to Pepsi Co.)And my suggestion for a filtering windows package is Proxomitron -- works best with IE5.x so you can disable javascript errors (it kicks up a few).

Finaly
DBZ has been in reruns for far too long, I am happy to see that CN has purchased the rest of the series so I can watch with utter joy,
And yes I know that it will be horibly cut and the voices are crap but It's the only why I can see it. Before you start telling me to go buy the dubed uncut version let me tell you something, that is too damn expensive!! I get uncut versions of movies because that is a one time thing, can you imagine how mutch it would cost to get the entire DBZ series. I am in college so I don't have that kind of dough to spend on anime. -
Historic Nokia bug?I seem to remember once managing to get my dad's Nokia 2160 to lock up, requiring the battery to be removed and reinstalled.... it used to be used on AT&T Wireless service, and they had this MessageFlash software that would allow text messages to be sent to the phone from your PC.. if I remember right, MessageFlash liked to crash the PC too... anyway, I sent a MessageFlash message saying "test" or something to that regard, and it went kaput. Not that it ever worked right, either... nor did it ever work right as a phone... can anyone say "paperweight"? Of course, we were paying serious extra for digital service... (sigh)
And just HOW does Nextel work so damn well? I think it's somehow magically enchanted.
Blue Neon - quite possibly the perfect semi-caffiene-inspired online comic. -
Who Wants To Be a Criminal?
Let me see if I follow this logic:
By providing a link to this, this, or even this, I'm committing an injurious act to interests in the state of California.
Never mind that I legally purchased every single one of my DVDs. Never mind that I legally purchased the necessary hardware to play those DVDs, and that the DVD CCA got their cut from my purchases. Never mind that DeCSS "circumvents" CSS the same way entering my password "circumvents" the /etc/shadow file on my computer.
By aiding and abetting an open source programmer, I'm working to steal the intellectual property of Hollywood? I injured consumer electronics and computer manufacturers in California (whose products I legally purchased in order to be able to use the software player LiVid and the CSS decrypter DeCSS)?
If I have, then come get me . -
At least /. got an anime topic now
Yay, But as for CN, they don't seem to have that mutch good stuff. The DBZ they show is butured compared to the original, Tenchi in Tokyo is the worst of the series, and the other stuff they have on is not revelutionary or anything.
Sorry for complaining, I will still watch all of it(especialy DBZ) because we need to suport out anime on TV so that maby someday CN will make an anime network, that and it is still better than most any american cartoon crap on ABC or dizney. -
Re:Argh
Oh, don't get me wrong, I am an academic snob. I like to sound as much as possible like Mr. Burns in whatever I write. My home page is entirely about trying to prolong academia into the post-collegiate milieu.
Like how I tucked "milieu" into there? :)
"Uh, excuse me, but... 'proactive'? 'Paradigm'? Aren't these just words dumb people use to sound important? ...Uh, I'm fired, aren't I? -

If you hate the banner, get rid of it:

Hmm.The only reason the
.cx thing got posted is because of everybody's favorite website, goatse.cx. As an open source project (bear with me on this one) they're losing their free domain, and will need to find a new one. How about goatse.sourceforge.net? Or maybe even just ? (Though if we're lucky, it'll be goatse.slashdot.org. Of course, there's always good old fashioned goatse.cjb.net, or come.to/goatse.Ah well,...

Browsing and SecurityWith regard to browsers, there are three different security layers:
- ActiveX: no security, can do anything if permitted, permission has been overriden by exploits. (MS operating systems only)
- Java: "sandbox" security model, should be secure, but numerous exploits in the past have shown that it's not.
- JavaScript/VBSCript/JScript: primitive scripting languages (VBS/JScript=MS proprietary), have been used for more exploits than Java, but usually more benign.
Next, if you're using Windows, download Proxomitron. It will allow you to selectively filter JavaScript, per site or per user request. I don't know of similar solutions for Linux.
Turn off JavaScript by default and only turn it on if a site doesn't work anymore (chances are, there isn't much content there to be missed anyway).
By deactivating Java and filtering JavaScript, I have been able to greatly increase the stability of Netscape on my NT4 system. It hardly ever crashes (about once a week), although I have lots of windows open (right now, it's 14). That's Netscape Communicator 4.7. I have heard that Navigator alone is even more stable, but haven't tested that one.
Now you're safe from exploits like the one reported above. If you use IE, you are vulnerable to many other exploits (like the recent JavaScript bug that allowed sites to spy on your cookies and thus determine top-secret user ID data that can be used to compromise credit card numbers and much more). If you think that IE is the better browser, you should at least deactivate or filter the insecure layers mentioned above.
Oh, and you might also use Opera. You pay a few bucks once (and I urge you to pay, as they need your money to continue development) and get a rock stable browser with all the essential features, super high speed and high security. If you think IE is better coz Bill Gates gives it away for free, that's your decision.

There are a couple others too, like this one, for Windows/DirectX:
and then there's a project to turn Ultima VII into an online game.

Read the Documentation ;)
Of course, in one sense, there if "no problem" but is he wants to use three different products then there will be inevitably. Paying IBM to support all of them is one option.
As for the original question, there is no way to prevent one vendor from blaming another's product. The easiest way to get the problem resolved is to submit a detailed, accurate description of the problem, preferably with a test case, that demonstrates that the problem lies with one particular vendor.
I've done a lot of support and I can't tell you how many times people call and say "x is broken" and they don't describe the problem or provide any diagnostic data to support it. The first thing a support person is going to do is to throw it back at you and say "give me more detail." It's no wonder why people complain so much about support when they don't even help themselves in the first instance. In my experience, ore than 80% of the questions are answered in the documentation (for the stuff I support). Of course, no one reads it, they want the answer spoon fed to them. Pathetic.
If you're using complex software you damn well better read the documentation (yes, a lot of it is poorly written -- that's another thread).
Web app servers, networks, different databases -- all these make the problem that much more complex.
Another poster said "tell them to certify their products with the other software you want to use." This is a nice idea but if there's no business case for it it won't happen. If IBM is pushing WebSphere there's no real reason for them to bother certifying that Weblogic works with DB2. The answer is: read the documentation, keep up to date on the fixes and patches, and, when there is a problem (and there will be) send everything: the steps you took, the documentation you read, what you thought would happen, what did happen and provide data to back it up. More is better than less.
As usual i've found another link that deals with this matter .
-
Make them agree
Make sure that each part of their contract shows what part they are responcible for, there is a good example at private support.
-
Why?
If they are going to snoop on all email like the article says, they will have to look for keywords and that would be pointless as they would not be able to break encryption as long as it was good, ie. PGP or GPG, so what are you all so bothered about.
Slashdot has been pissing me off lately, why the fsck do they bother the nutters, once they have sorted their own act out I'll be happy.......

Re:This is a very old debate....
Doing a bit of search I found a good article abour rgis at buffer overflow it details how no exec stacks can be used to allow data to stay where it belongs and the actual stuff to be execed to always be kept in memory.
It does make it a bit harder to program at the OS level but it would provide a good tradeoff in security and save all the buffer overflow attacks in programs which I think everyone would be thankful for! -

Re:Idea for Cookie Mixer -- Proxomitron
An easier way to do this is to intercept the cookie headers and rewrite them before the browser even sees them. This is what Proxomitron does (among other really nifty filtering type things). I'm sure other proxy based filters can do the same thing, but Proxomitron is the only one that's ShonenWare! (He even names the releases after Naoko Yamano.)

I love Tenchi but...
Especialy that cute little Rio-oh-ki but what is done to these anime on Cartoon Network is a shame, DBZ has become a Joke because of over censorship, The Netork never lets the viewers know that Sailor Moons new friends are actualy lesbians and now Tenchi will be censored. I agree that Censored anime is better than no anime and wish that if CN did make an anime network they wouldn't try to market it only to kids, that way they could show more uncut shows.
At least with Gundam W they did it right. -
Re:Minor Solution
Solution - tag on one minute of the real song, and put white noise in the rest of it.
Sure... and then get sued by Whitenoise... -
Re:Where's the porn button?!
I started using proxomitron to filter out doubleclick and other such services. It also comes with handy filters to stop pop-ups, locked sites, and alsorts of other handy stuff give it a try.

umm....what he said is true.....try compressing a .wav file or a .mp3 file versus compressing a .txt or a .doc file.............one is going to compress by about 50% while the other....by maybe 5% if u are lucky......i would guess same thing with RAM......the "compressor" will not be able to compress all of the data.

Join the mailing list(s) and ask.
You might want to join the eGroups mailing list `nesdev'. Email Memblers (his address is all over the nesdev home page) about it. And tell him Damian Yerrick sent you.
And some of the documentation is over on the nesemdev home page.

This Works? (+ some links)
Can we get a few more posts on which files have actually been viewed with this? I've got everything compiled correctly but all I get is a seg fault when I try to load a DivX. I tried to sign up to the mailing list but got no response (anyone else out there have any luck with that?).
I've been messing with video since the vivo format was the best thing out there and every single time I see a DivX I am blown away with the incredible quality. The ONLY reason I reboot to winblows is to watch DivX's and I've been hoping for a video player for linux for a LONG time...
Please let me know if anyone out there has had/overcome problems trying to get this to work.
Thanks ;-)

another nifty utilityYou can go to http://pecompact.cjb.net to get PECompact with a warning plugin.
When run on wscript.exe and cscript.exe (the Windows scripting hosts responsible for VBScript execution) that will display a warning that the script could contain a virus.

Re:Entry pagesThe Proxomitron does exactly that. It also puts a nice [refresh] link in so you can click to the site you would have been redirected to at your leisure, which keeps you from getting fuXX0red when using the back button.
It also can filter cookies, ad banners, javascript (on many different levels) and is highly customizable - you only enable the modules you want.

Re:It is a sad commentary.
settled simply by leaders on both sides had dropped their drawers and pulled out rulers.
Oh come on, everyone knows that Americans have small penises......just ask any chick that has slept with a foreigner, she'll tell ya :)
Why win9x really sucks -
Proxomitron blocks with without killing JS
The default installation of Proxomitron disables this exploit without sacrificing the Javascript functionality needed to enjoy the majority of sites. Cool.

Re:HTML cannot be copyrighted, but...
This is america where doctors patent their surgery techniques...ie the way they move their hands during surgery.........hell I bet I can patent/copyright the way I take a shit.........

Re:They should get rid of it. -- HardlyAds are stealing my money. I get charged for incoming traffic, thus ads I don't want are costing me money. You've got it 'round the wrong way.
I use Proxomitron (Windows app) to filter ads and annoying java script - it works brilliantly and it's free.

Re:MPM
My site has this kinda hack... www.nul.cjb.net, anyways best way to do this is
img src=file://c:|nul/nul
there when netscape/IE try to open c:\nul\nul for that picture.....BSOD here it is.....and it's not only nul..these are the ones i remember:
nul aux con
so u can have nul/con con/nul aux/nul etc.etc.
