Re: All in blue (or about to be blue) state shitho
Oh, please. If you really think that fear of non-whites is the core of what it means to not agree with Democrats on who should hold office and why,
I'm "locked up" on a "plantation?" Are you deliberately trying to validate what I'm saying? Or are you just so triggered you can't restrain yourself and have to let all that racist agita out somehow to relieve the stress?
I am a former republican, and I have never voted for a democrat in my life. And as it happens I spent 10 years living in Dallas and have family in that liberal bastion of Tyler (Louie Gohmert's district). So don't spazz out about me being brainwashed. I escaped the bubble that you so obviously embrace while denying it exists.
White identity has been the single most important plank of the GOP for the last 40 years. Trump just says outloud what y'all been saying in whispers, subtext and dog whistles.
Southern strategy
War on drugs
Build the wall
Welfare queens
Birtherism
Willie Horton
Every attempt to make English the official language
The Southern Baptist Convention - by far the single largest group of evangelicals - was created because real evangelicals made them choose between slavery and Christianity
Bob Jones University banned interracial dating as recently as 2000 and Pat Roberston still supports it today
Reactionary colorblindess and the hijacking of Dr King's message
Jeff Sessions was rejected by a bipartisan congress for a judgeship for being too racist in 1986 and now he's the freaking AG with unaniumous GOP approval
California Prop 187 in 1994 the passage of which was the beginning of the end for the GOP in that state
The list of example is basically endless
Also... Half of everything YOU post, you think you are clever but you aren't you are transparent AF. -

http://money.cnn.com/2017/10/1...
How would spending millions of dollars running for president and thrust in the political lime light to be alienated by friends, donors, business associates, and politicians be in any way a winning strategy for getting richer? Have you thought this through at all?
Your other remarks aside, this is self evidently absurd on so many levels it's remarkable you and others actually believe it. Is Trump smart enough to pull the long con by risking everything and putting his reputation, image, money, etc on the line for some perceived gain in policy in a position that does not make law.
Or maybe... just maybe. He likes the country. He likes what it stands for. He tries to do what he thinks is good for the country. He is an idiot.
Use Occam's Razor. Which is simpler. Is Trump a genius pulling the long con. Or is he a patriotic idiot.
There is plenty to disagree with Obama to want to undo his agenda without spite.

Australian here.
Spoken to an Australian recently? I think they'd argue about 2018 being one of the coldest on record. I assume you meant to include "so far" and "here".
http://www.cnn.com/2018/01/10/...Spoken to an Australian recently... because they'd tell you about the number of cities in the country with water restrictions from ongoing droughts that are nearing a decade long in some parts as well as consecutive record high summers. In fact they'd be sweltering in one right now.
How do I know... because you're speaking to an Australian right now.
You're not only speaking to an Australian, but one who understands the climate of Australia. Right now we're getting a La Nina event, which is a sub surface cooling in the Pacific (the reversal of an El Nino event) which is part of the El Nino Southern Oscillation or ENSO. This is a welcome change as Australia has been hotter and drier because of several record El Nino events in recent years.
Next time you want to say something completely stupid about Australia... go to Australia first. -

The last time i saw a breakdown of the average "use" of religious charities received donations (and yes, it has been a while.. before this prosperity anti-christian gospel blasphemy started), 70-75% went to admin and upkeep, 20% was passed through to other religious groups (with a similar breakdown of those donations), and 5-10% used on actual assistance to ANYONE. That "assistance to anyone" was a mix of the actual members of the organization who had given the donations in the first place, and the general public...weighing more heavily towards the donation givers.
So, while you'd like to cherry pick your own little fantasy land of how churches work, i'll remind you i'm speaking of the US.... where self proclaimed "christians" consider Jesus' teachings to be a horrible excuse for giving out handouts (yes, i've actually had that anti-christian statement made to me from a self proclaimed christian), and where they put all their energy into things Jesus never taught, or even mentioned.... but they're willing to lie every time they open their mouths and say he did.
Jesus taught to feed the hungry, cloth and shelter those in need, help the sick and imprisoned. It's too bad such a large segment of "christians" in the US find those teachings to be abhorrent. -
Edge Case not handled - Blackouts
Loss of utility power once a major portion of transportation is moved to electric power will be troublesome. This year we had two examples of extended power outages that caused significant trouble.
Hurricane Maria caused total collapse of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) generation and distribution system. Complete restoration is now hoped to be May 2018.
A construction accident cut power off to the outer banks of North Carolina (Hatteras and Ocracoke). The outage started July 27 2017, and ended Aug 3 2017.
How does emergency response work when the power is out? Backup generation helps but even on the outerbanks where the source feed is more than 60 miles of single circuit primary distribution, the backup generation is not intended to replace the primary utility feed. The backup generation could likely not be able to carry the electrical load of charging the several thousand vehicles that needed to evacuate the island. -
Why are twin jets cheaper to run?
The fundamental problem for the A380 is that twin jets are cheaper to operate than quad jets. The 777 may not carry as many passengers, but it has lower cost per passenger-kilometre than the A380, or indeed the 747 (which isn't so different in size than the 777.)
I have seen this stated many times. However, I don't really understand why. For example, this article states "those newer, more reliable [twin jet] engines have also been bigger and more efficient" but doesn't say why jet engine companies aren't also making more reliable and efficient engines for quad jets, if it is all down to newness.
I've looked online for an answer, but generally I just find speculation from people who seem no more knowledgeable than myself.
I can give an argument why quad jets should be cheaper. A plane needs to have sufficient thrust to take off and climb out after a single engine failure at the worst time (just after it is too late to abort take off.) If we call this thrust T, then a twin jet needs each engine to be capable of producing T, so it provides 2T thrust. For a quad jet, after a failure it needs T, so each of the remaining engines needs 1/3T, hence when fully operational it need only provide 4/3 T thrust. So a twin jet must be much more over provisioned than a quad.
Speculations I've seen include that four engines are extra complexity (but those big twin engines need a lot of extra complexity to be so big), extra maintenance costs, that engines disrupt lift, so you need bigger wings (and more weight) to make up the losses of having two extra engines, that with engines further outboard you need more structural strength in the wings (hence more cost and weight.)
I'm not saying these reasons are wrong, just that nobody I've seen making those arguments has convinced me they know what they're talking about. In replies, if you have expertise, or are citing someone with expertise, please make this clear.

Cost vs benefit
They are concerned enough to spend money on the warning system, but have they spent the money on enough bunkers to hold the population of the islands? Are they located so that everyone has a reasonable chance of getting to one regardless of traffic/panic of everyone else trying to get there?
A reasonable question with and unfortunately unreasonable answer. You have to weigh the costs of providing such shelter against the likely benefits. Odds are you'll find that building and maintaining such shelters is too costly to justify even presuming they would work as intended. (and it's not clear how useful such shelters would be) Folks in Hawaii are thinking about the problem seriously but the answers aren't simple ones.

In the land of $100 hammers and $1000 toilet seats, you really need proof of this? Give me a fucking break.
Yes, we need a citation, because the $500k number is total bullcrap. It is implausible that a deployed combat soldier, at the far end of a 10,000 mile supply chain, costs so little.
Here is a citation that the actual cost is $850k to $1.4 million per soldier per year.

If you're looking for a logical argument to have, it's not the fucking cost of a soldier.
It's the justification to continue to wage fucking war.

Re:What did you THINK would happen?
OK, enough with the ignorance already. Every US military leader would not take kindly to being labeled a mass murderer,
...but most of them absolutely are, because they were not fighting a war to protect people, but to protect profits . Who gives a fuck how they feel about being called what they are? Ignorance is no excuse, either. It's your responsibility to do your homework before killing people.
Also intent matters, which is exactly why he's being charged with involuntary manslaughter and not murder.
That's wrong, though. His intent was to get someone killed. He should be charged with first-degree murder, since it was "willful and premeditated with malice aforethought." Or with being an accessory or accomplice to same, as I have argued, although I am fast coming around to the idea that the cop is the accomplice (and guilty of voluntary manslaughter) and the SWATter is the murderer in the first degree. He planned the murder (via SWAT team) and then carried it out. The only reason anyone SWATs anyone is because they know that it is dangerous, and that the danger goes up to and includes the death of the victim (and possibly innocent bystanders, maybe even babies.)

Rand Paul plans to filibuster in the Senatehttps://www.cnn.com/2018/01/10...
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., is prepared to filibuster the reauthorization of Section 702 of the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act, which is up for a vote in the House to authorize a six-year extension, in an effort to get warrant requirement for Americans.
“My worry is that they also collect information on millions of Americans, and I don’t want that database to be searched without a warrant,” “I will filibuster and do whatever to stop that,” he added.
In the event that protections were included for U.S. citizens’ private information, Paul said he would support reauthorizing Section 702.

Re:*STOP BLAMING TRUMP* !
Likewise - Devin Nunes has nothing to do with Democrats or even Obama.
The reason to bring up Obama in this context is the last President's willingness — nay eagerness — to unmask US Citizens tangled in the surveillance for political reasons. The former Administration officials remain evasive about the process and procedures — they really are to blame for the actual privacy deterioration that took place.
After all, the worry is not so much that the NSA will know, who said something. It is what the rest of the government may do, when they learn about it.
If we aren't willing to block NSA from surveilling the foreigners, we better codify how to treat the cases of US citizens getting recorded incidentally — and not simply leave it up to the Executive, who has and will continue to abuse this power himself or by delegating to low-level unelected flunkies.

Re:Michael "Deathwish" Wolf
No. The problem is that Wolfe was the wrong guy. He's a Gossip Columnist who is most famous for lobbing bombs over the transom to see what he can shake up. To that end he will do or say anything. "The Most Loathed Man in Media," even CNN -- hardly a right-wing pillar -- describes him as "pugnacious" and "arrogant." If you were really looking for someone to lay into Trump and credibly dig up the goods to bring him down, Wolff was ABSOLUTELY THE LAST writer you would call. He's a self-absorbed gadfly party-boy more interested in making the news than reporting it. The cause would have been better served had he taken his notes and given them to a real journalist to byline. Whatever important stuff Wolff may have unearthed during his time as "a fly on the wall" at the White House is going to be buried beneath the inevitable exaggerations, un-truths, half-truths, mis-quotes and overall carnival atmosphere that permeates all his work to date.

Re:Whatever happened to Occupy Wall Street
OWS demonstrators were cleared off of private land, not public. The owners of the park had every right to remove people, especially when they were breaking the rules the owner set out (no tents, etc.) and making the park totally unsanitary.
What's more, clearing people off of land is far different from running them over or shooting them dead in the street. -

During the last demonstrations after the bogus election in Iran protestors appealed to the outside world for help
http://am.blogs.cnn.com/2009/0...
Mohammad: Yes. Let me tell you something. For about three decades our nation has been humiliated and insulted by this regime. Now Iranians are united again one more time after 1979 Revolution. We are a peaceful nation. We don't hate anybody. We want to be an active member of the international community. We don't want to be isolated. Is this much of a demand for a country with more than 2,500 years of civilization? We don't deny the Holocaust. We do accept Israel's rights. And actually, we want - we want severe reform on this structure. This structure is not going to be tolerated by the majority of Iranians. We need severe reform, as much as possible.
Roberts: Interesting perspective this morning from Mohammad, a student demonstrator there in Tehran.
Mohammad: Excuse me, sir. I have a message for the international community. Would you please let me tell it?
Roberts: Yes, go ahead.
Mohammad: Americans, European Union, international community, this government is not definitely - is definitely not elected by the majority of Iranians. So it's illegal. Do not recognize it. Stop trading with them. Impose much more sanctions against them. My message...to the international community, especially I'm addressing President Obama directly - how can a government that doesn't recognize its people's rights and represses them brutally and mercilessly have nuclear activities? This government is a huge threat to global peace. Will a wise man give a sharp dagger to an insane person? We need your help international community. Don't leave us alone.
And no one did anything.
http://www.bloggernews.net/122...
The the LA Times and other news outlets are reporting that the government sponsored "Anti American" demonstrations to celebrate the taking of the American hostages 30 years ago now have open demonstrations at the fringes of the government arranged crowds: and they are not shouting death to America but death to the dictators.
The UK Guardian has photos HERE if you scroll down...apparently twitter is back up...and they have a bunch of photos from one of their photo-journalists...
What is more, both of these newspapers report that some of the demonstrators are asking where is the American president, who has been so eager to make peace with the present dictatorship that he has failed to support those who are asking for democracy. Again, quote is from the LATimes:"Obama, Obama!" protesters chanted on a day marking the 30th anniversary of the United States Embassy takeover. "Either you're with them, or with us."
And where is President Obama? Equivocating, as usual, and talking sweetly to the dictators;
President Obama issued a statement Tuesday night urging Iran's leaders to join with him in overcoming the acrimony forged by the hostage crisis three decades ago.
"This event helped set the United States and Iran on a path of sustained suspicion, mistrust and confrontation," Obama said. "I have made it clear that the United States of America wants to move beyond this past, and seeks a relationship with the Islamic Republic of Iran based upon mutual interests and mutual respect."
This type of statement, of course, could be interpreted as President Obama backing the present regime: all in the name of peace, of course.
I'm not suggesting the US invade or anything. But if a murderous and hostile theocracy is mowing down peaceful demonstrators the US should say that's a bad thing and nail it with sanctions.
I've met a lot of expat Iranians and they all loath the Islamic Republic regime and consider it far worse than the Shah's. And from a foreign policy perspective a democratic Iran would be mighty handy - Iran dominates Syria

In a lengthy message posted on its site Thursday, the company gave an in-depth explanation for the controversial update. To make amends, Apple will temporarily drop the price of replacement batteries for the iPhone 6 and later to $29 starting in late January. The price will go back up to the usual $79 in 2019.
And even worserer than that most people wouldn't know the problem was the battery and would have bought a new phone.
And there've been reports of throttling even when charging. What'd be interesting is to see if swapping batteries restores performance, and to check if the throttling stops when a charger is connected.

As far as immigration goes, Miami has a larger percentage of immigrants than San Jose and note that Los Angeles is not very far behind San Jose. And the violent crime rates of Miami and Los Angeles dwarf that of San Jose. San Jose kind of bucks the trends - I think having billions and billions of dollars in "sillycon valley" makes that happen?
Or perhaps it's not the fact they're immigrant, but whether or not those immigrants are here legally? After all, illegal immigrants are about 3.4% of the population but they overwhelmingly commit most of the violent and drug crime in the US.
Or perhaps it has to do with the race of those immigrants? You do realize that 61.4% of all immigrants in San Jose are from Asia, and Asians have some of the lowest crime rates. So maybe the fact your immigrant neighbors are here legally, making big money, and from ethnic backgrounds that for whatever reason have a much lower crime rate, you're in a unique spot and cannot being to extrapolate your experience to nationwide - because it is so different than most of the rest of the US?
