Re:The net is US-only?
How can a us-congress decision inflict wordlwide changes of the internet?
Just asking... I sort of lived in a dreamworld where the world was (alot) more than merely the US...

Re:collection
You do realise that the US Doctor Who fan club dwarfs it's British, Canadian, Australian, etc counterparts by an order of magnitude?
Not surprising since the US population is an order of magnitude greater than those places as well.

Re:Episode III better rock
No kidding. I couldn't help but wonder why he lost other than the script demanded it. He should have been able to throw off that falling collumn without a problem. After all, he tells Luke that the size of an object doesn't matter.

02. The Rancor is CG and looks disgusting as ever.
I doubt it, the Rancor, and the score of other aliens looked so great because they were real, physical objects. Lucas's idea of CG is to turn everything into a cartoon.

Re:Hopw long before we see...
There was an article in wired a while back about how Japanese call girls used digital camera cell phones to check out potential clients and to show the clients what they would be buying without having to physically meet first.

Re:It's an insane decision.
Nevertheless, it is a fairly safe bet that any theatrically released Disney animated feature will be based on an existing story(out of copyright
:), and include a list of characters determined by formula.(One true-blue sidekick, approximately two, but possibly more, comic relief tag-alongs, and one villain's sidekick whose role likely spills over into comic relief tag-along. There might be as many as three comic tag-along villains.) I could probably do more, if I kept at it.
There is more comic relief than movie to be relieved from.

If you want free health care go live in Europe, but don't whine about the 60% income tax.
That's just what I did : P
Call me crazy, but I think that everyone should have access to universal health care. -
Stop Bush Protests
I was in the London protests against Bush last week, and it's stuff like this that makes me glad I picked the 'Shamed by your stance on civil liberties' poster.
Here is an article I wrote about the experience for those interested. -
Re:A Writer Writes
No kidding,
The public nature of the web allows writers to put their work up and see how people like it. That's why I made my site - to try and improve my writing, and see if people like what I do. -
Re:hmm
-
What?
PaulGraham.Com and Stallman.Org are websites of two well-known individuals in the computing industry. The two websites make very different statements about the respective individuals. Paul Graham's site is neat, and organized. Richard M. Stallman's site has lots of information and links related to his idealogies. Even the choice of the domain name reflects something about their personalities. Paul Graham has chosen a dot com, while Stallman prefers a dot org.
Ummm. Exactaly what does the ending tell about the person? Is Stallman an entire organization? Is Graham a commercial operation? What does a dot net say about me? -
Re:Pay what it's worth
On the other hand, I wish I could pay $50 to shut down each self-indulgent, long-winded "blog" operated by a man that expects to be paid for his "efforts."
But I don't expect to be paid... that's the whole point. I put up my blog because I like doing it, and if someone wants to give me some money for my efforts, then I'm happy to take it. : ) -
Pay what it's worth
What about the 'pay what you think it's worth' model. That's what I use on my London Blog. If people like my writing and want to help pay my school bills then they can drop a pound or two. This way everyone is happy, those who want free content can get it, and every once in a while I get some support from the people who enjoy my work the most.
-
I don't get it.
I moved to London recently, but no one has been able to answer my question about Guy Fawkes with certainty: Are Londoner's celebrating because Fawkes tried to blow up parliament, or because he was caught before he could?

Re:How about one of the most compelling arguments
The problem with secret trials and no legal council are the false positives. Sure, I would support the PATRIOT act if you could guarantee me only 100% terrorists would be captured, but you can't.
Take me for example, I did the odd combination of physics and sociology in college. If the government peeks at my reading material, they are going to see some frightening stuff - books that could be used to make all sorts of weapons (the science books) and books by people like Marx and Hitler (the sociology books). So now, on paper, it seems like I have the ability, and desire to do some bad things.
I don't want to spend two weeks (if I'm lucky) in a secret jail because some dumb jock working for the FBI put me on a list because he's scared of books. This isn't the only reason, but it sure was part of the reason I moved to London. -
Re:Don't be rediculous
Actually, I think a bigger problem would be audience size. You need to reach a certain critical mass before the moderation system would work. Most blogs, my own included, do not have the necessary audience.
-
Tool of the System
Senior Jennifer Puckett, president of the Inter-Residence Hall Association, called Icarus "a good thing" as it enforces rules that were already in place.
Slashdot poster Colin Palmer was surprised to hear himself say aloud the words "What a Tool" as he read this in the wired article. -

Yeah, the SAS guys are scary. I had an unfortunate run in with of them and his threatening owl once.

Just posted this elsewhere...
It's obvious what to do about the #1 problem: people who run web pages should stop listing e-mail addresses in readily spammable form.
On my London Blog I don't use any form of obfuscation. The reason for this is I want people to contact me about my writing. I want to know what people think, and any barrier I put in the way will reduce the number of legitimate emails I get. I'm not confident that most of the Internet population would understand that they need to remove the REVOVE.THIS.TO.EMAIL.ME part of my address.
Sure, I drastically increase the number of spams I get, but popfile takes care of them all. The author of this article is still correct in his economic analysis. There is little burden for me using this method, but a much larger burden for my ISP.
-
Bring it on.

My two cents.
Writing something that matters vs. writing for school:
I've noticed a marked distinction between when I write something that matters to me (my weekly London journal for example) and when I write something I just want to get done (a school paper).
For my journal, I write it out first longhand on yellow paper. For some reason, if I want something to be a good piece of writing, it has to be done longhand. When I do type it up, I share the author's abhorrence of GUI. Terminal mode emacs is the only way to go for me. No distractions.
When I write something I 'just want to get done', a school paper for example, Microsoft Word is my weapon of choice. Here I can endless distract myself and slowly inflate my writing with a careful choice of fonts, paragraphs spacing, and the ever useful extra points between letters.
P.S. This post was written in word. -
The Problem - New Visitors
Micropayments, small digital payments of between a quarter and a fraction of a penny, made (yet another) appearance this summer with Scott McCloud's online comic, The Right Number, accompanied by predictions of a rosy future for micropayments.
To read The Right Number, you have to sign up for the BitPass micropayment system; once you have an account, the comic itself costs 25 cents.
Right there. Did you see that? That's the problem with micropayments.
I don't know this guy and I don't know his comics. Why am I going to hand him a quarter to read his stuff?
Sure, if he is already established in his niche on the 'net, he can make a good living. But, if you are just starting our, micropayments will guarantee the death of your site. No one will pay for a site, um, sight unseen.
I'd love for people to pay a penny to read my weekly London Journal, but I know if I asked for it first, I would never get any new visitors. -

"Somebody who posted a reply to something I wrote on

My Poor Eyes
I don't blame them. I love to read (plug for my book reviews) but reading on the computer stinks. It hurts my eyes, and I would never read a book in the positing that I sit at my desk. And I'm not about to lug my laptop along to read during commutes on the tube.

Re:Why why why
Well sort of. Getting a high page rank on my site does increase the number of people who find information they are looking for on my page. For example, ever since I started promoting my London journal, my pagerank increased. That allowed people looking for book reviews to more easily find mine.
