Really? Are you sure you're not trolling?
I'll bite anyway, just in case you are genuine.
To follow through with your auto-mechanic analogy, their tools are probably not speech, but descriptions of their methods most certainly are speech. Don't you think it would be a violation of mechanics' right to express themselves if they were prevented from publishing their methods as manuals? In much the same way, a programmer's computer is not really speech, but the code compiled and run on it is.
What you say about comments is true, although I would have said this shows that code is the same as speech, as any natural language text can be thrown into a comment in code, and the code is still valid.
One useful way of looking at actual program code though, is as a description for how to do something. For people well-versed in the language used, it is often a more precise and concise way of expressing that description than using a natural language. You could instead choose to describe the exact same process in English or Swahili, although it would most likely be a lot less efficient. This does not change the fact that the content would be identical.
It is possible to take the text of code, and express it in a way that shows it is undeniably speech - putting it on a t-shirt for example. You can't run it directly any more, although the text is unchanged. You can hardly argue that text on a t-shirt is not speech. Particularly in the case of the OpenDVD t-shirt, worn to make a political statement.
Even more to the point, any code expressed in a Turing-complete language can be expressed in natural languages as pseudocode. The best example is the De-CSS haiku - while it is code of a sort, it is also poetry!
Code expresses ideas. Ideas are speech. Not that complicated.

Re:old shirt?I found this link to an old shirt that is still for sale.
Looks like copyleft.net has other slashdot shirts, but they weren't pulling up correctly when I just tried.

Re:Prior art.
Welcome to HTML 101. Our first lesson is how to properly create a hyperlink using an anchor tag. We begin typing >a followed by a space and the four letters href. Next we place an equal sign and a quote. The URL of the site follows but here is the real trick. We must first place the magic http:// in front of the URL. That is the hardest part. From there on out it is easy.
Here is a fixed link as an example. CopyLeft -
To really send the message that you don't care...
"Even more than that. Civil disobedience means that you explicitly break a law that you consider wrong, and do so in public or with a maximum of publicity and turn yourself in."
For bonus points, show up in court wearing one of the copyleft DVD Decryption T-Shirts :) -
Why pay when there is tcpdump and similar?
Heh. Why "violate the privacy" on one protocol (it's not a viloation on work time...)? When I could run tcpdump and maybe a custom app somewhere to ferret out anything?
Wee.
tcpdump + large fast disks + promiscuous NIC == all your bits are belong to me now.

Re:My predictionI would tend to agree but remember that the RIAA is not responsible for enforcing federal law (via lawsuits) the FBI is responsible. What if an audiance member called the FBI during the presentation and reported a "Crime in Progress" at the hotel? They would have to respond, right? Its still a crime, even if the "offended" party doesn't want the criminal prosecuted, right?
In anycase, I for one will wear my DCMA violating T-Shirt in Bruce's honor.

Copyleft
I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned Copyleft, but I guess I just rectified that.

Ultimate Geekwear
IMHO the ultimate geekwear is the line of "O'Really" t-shirts from copyleft.net
...
My personal favorite is "Assembling Etherkillers" but you should pick your own fav ...
I can't remember the URL for the site, but I saw a T once that topped these ... best "got root" shirt I ever saw ... French Blue ... red outline pentagon on the chest ... yellow background inside the pentagon ... no "S" ... nope ... said "SU" ... 'nuff said ...
If someone would post a link to it, I'd buy it ...

Re:T-Shirts
I think the original poster meant CopyLeft, not ThinkGeek... CopyLeft has three different DeCSS related shirts... They have them as a three-pack set, or individually (they link to each individual one at the above page)...

Copyleft t-shirts......are here: http://www.copyleft.net/
3-pack of DeCSS tshirts on the front page.

Most definately a MUST-PASS.
> An excellent presentation of an
> excellent film; a must-have for
> any science fiction fan.
As big of a science fiction fan as I am, and as much as this film appeals to my inner-geek-child, I consider this movie a must-pass.
Disney is pushing hard for the SSSCA, because (near as I can tell) they consider you, me, world+dog a criminal.
Jon Johansen was indicted for the henious crime of distributing a tool that allowed people to watch the DVD's that they own in a manner that the wish to.
I dislike being treated as a criminal, and I prefer to not do business with organizations that do. I refuse to give any of my money to an organization that might use it to lobby congress for the SSSCA. I prefer to not help any member of the movie industry that would support such draconian acts as Mr. Johansen has endured.
Maybe I'll used the money I might've spent on the DVD and buy one of these

Re:You are not allowed to lend your CD out. From the license terms of the CD:
You may not authorize, encourage or allow the Player or any Content to be reproduced, modified, displayed, distributed or otherwise used by any other partyThis sounds to be like you are not allowed to let anyone other than yourself use the CD in any way. If you are playing the CD yourself, and someone else walks into the room and hears it, does that count?
No, I think it's more like, "If you distribute a decoder/ripper, make a t-shirt out of it, or come up with some way around copy-protected technology with minimal features so that people with disabilities can use it. And god forbid you encourage someone to do those things! (oh wait, that's not the right link - here it is)
I wonder if Slashdot can legally be held liable for people who post stuff like this, "encouraging" us to "reproduce" the "Content". Since when did music become "Content" with a capital C?
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. -- Ghandi

Hysteria
The RIAA's approach to Gnutella thus far has been actively discovering copyright offenders and sending DMCA complaints to their ISP
I was a bit worried about this so I did some research. The only case of someone actually losing access was covered in an article on Salon. News.com reported about pressure on ISPs, but mentioned only one subscriber being cut off.
I checked the dslreports message boards expecting to find howls of protests by those cut off from their monopoly broadband providers. Silence....
I think the RIAA and MPAA are doing a great job at scaring people away from file sharing without actually paying many bounty hunters because the idea of a secret copyright police force is so juicy.
Similarly, there seems to be hysteria about people being denied boarding on aircraft for being dissidents. The Bangor, Maine Green Party member turns out to have been pretty uncooperative. Yes, the guard was an overbearing oaf, but she admits to provoking him in an interview . The Green's press release doesn't mention any of this.
The guy detained in Germany for having "unconventional" views and the guy denied flying for having a copy of Hayduke Lives look like the result of hysterical untrained guards, not a plot to deny everyone's civil rights. More hysteria won't help.
The guy who was harassed for taking pictures of National Guardsmen at a security checkpoint probably should have asked first (it's supposedly not illegal, but photography at customs is so he should have thought a bit), but he was another victim of a freakazoid with a chip on his shoulder.
I don't think we should have to turn into loyal plastic robots, but I'm not going to wear my Circumvention Device t-shirt through airport security. No need to get the wheels of teeny minds spinning.
There's certainly an epidemic of ineptitude (that's not new since Sept. 11), but I don't believe there's an epidemic of harrassment. Likewise of ISPs and their customers. -
Re:Heh..
yup, thinkgeek is cheesy.
copyleft is way better.
But since it doens't have a giant (but failing fast) corporation like VA Linux behind it to waste cash on banner ads all over the place no one knows about it. -
Sci-Fi commercials
Much in the same way that some artists say that they know they've really "made it" when Weird Al parodies one of their songs, maybe, in the same way, musicians/actors/athletes know they've made it once they make one of those "I am Sci-Fi" bits.
But, I can't be the only one that would love to see an actual Sci-Fi commercial with CmdrTaco in a CopyLeft shirt belting "No I am Sci-Fi dammit!" ;) -

Copyleft.net
Up here in Canada I too avoid shopping at Thinkgeek because of the bloody ridiculous shipping charges. When one is already paying in US dollars (vs our "weak" Canadian dollar) getting gouged on shipping totally sucks. Thankfully, the "other" geek t-shirt'n'stuff place, CopyLeft.net has much more reasonable shipping to north of the border. It was only a couple of bucks on the last T-Shirt I ordered (the oh so spiffy BOFH t-shirt). I have no idea how their shipping is to Europe, but given that their shipping to Canada was a fraction of what Thinkgeek wanted, my guess is it would be a comparable difference.

and I just bought the perl dvd shirt from copyleft
Kind of funny I just bought the Perl DVD Encryption t-shirt and then just read this story on slashdot. $3 of it went to support the EFF
On another I'm also glad I didn't sell my apex player which is region selectable. I own a couple of region 2 dvds, and it's nice just to be able to play them with minimum fuss. I still just find it sad that I have to resort to a hacked dvd player to play dvds I purchased. Hopefully sometime down the road, all this encryption, region coding and every other technology that is desgned to screw me and maximize profits of major companies will be a thing of the past.
Hopefully my $20 donation to the EFF was along with a few thousand others when the story ran a couple months ago asked people to donate will help get the laws(DCMA, etc.) that make this kind of stuff legal thrown out.

Copyleft shirtsThe way to make a difference is to educate people. Check out the shirts at Copyleft.net. I know my shirts have struck up many conversations on DeCSS and the whole issue of DMCA vs. Free Speech.
- qrpff: the famous perl implementation on a shirt. This is by far the best DeCSS shirt I have seen. Check it out.
- OpenDVD: Pretty cool shirt.
- Got DeCSS: Still one of my favorites. Only available in forest green for some reason. I own one, its a nice green.

Re:Big brother always a step behind
Now where do I get that t-shirt?
You can get them from copyleft.net.
For every DeCSS shirt they sell, $4 goes to the EFF. (note: this is NOT a goatsex link!) -
vaporware
This looks like another Microsoft vapor ware product (a practice which incidently Intel has taken up...)
about us Copyright.net incubates partnerships that create and internet Community. We're developing a portal that will offer web- based software solutions and business services for the copyright community. Copyright.net will offer the highest level of integrated software solutions as well as management and marketing business services for copyright owners and users.
But you can be certain that this thing that they hope to do will not exist until more money is thrown their way.
At least copyleft.net has some cool swag to buy.
I see where the record industry is comming from it does cut into margins which puts people out of work. But Napster itself is not the problem. Its users who are the problem. Unless you want to police the users activities (ie, what I use my computer for) killing a program like Napster will only give rise to less organized distribution methods.
Have you tried searching on Warez on Google recently?
I can only hope that Microsoft doesn't throw a bunch of money into this and say that a free operating system is somehow an infringment in their ULA, and therefore, you have lost rights to your computer, because you installed Linux.
-
Re:expected, but scaryIf this scares you, then send $100 to the EFF.
And while you're at it, be sure to pick up one of the DeCSS t-shirts from Copyleft -- $4 goes to the EFF with each purchase.
Get 'em while they're still legal -- I bought mine today.

The real issueYou all must remember the real issue regarding the DeCSS code and the MIAA is the 'fair use' laws. Currently the MIAA is twisting the law to remove YOUR legally protected fair use rights. Part of your 'fair use' rights are to use the product you purchase as your see fit.
I encourage everyone to purchase this t-shirt from copyleft.net. These t-shirts contain some of the DeCSS. Printing the code on the t-shirt is exercising you rights to free speech. Part of the profits (4 dollars) go to help defend the people being sued by the MIAA.
-
the real problem is...
I think the real problem is that not very many people are informed about what the MPAA is doing and what we can do about it....That is why I got the anti dvdcca shirt and the got decss shirt from copyleft. I get extremely strange looks in the halls, and when people question me about the shirt, I am able to tell them about the oppression from the MPAA and about decss and why source code is free speech and such things..I think if anything is going to be done, we need to get the word out.
