Re:And it ain't stopping...
Just so you know:
NiFi is what we call Nintendo's wireless protocol within range of other DSes (non-wifi).
http://www.darkain.com/nintendo_ds/nifi.php has a good description.
And yes, the delay to Metroid Hunters was to add wifi into the game, I believe that was confirmed by a recent Nintendo Power article on the game, or something. -
Nope. Guess again.
This page explains it all.
Wi-Fi vs Ni-Fi? no. Ni-Fi is not an alternative to Wi-Fi/802.11. Ni-Fi is a layer 3 protocol on top of 802.11.
The Nintendo DS uses IEEE 802.11b for ALL of its wireless communications. The DS operates at a specific subset of the features of 802.11b, including only operating using short preamble (not sure if this is a software option on the DS), and only operating at 1mbps or 2mbps max (to save power). -
Re:well?
No, the DS uses standard 802.11b wifi with short preamble, see here: http://www.darkain.com/nintendo_ds/nifi.php

Re:802.11x compatible?
From TFA:
"Nintendo and Wayport will offer complimentary Wi-Fi hotspots... enabling DS owners ... to play online games with or against each other."
The DS does not have a TCP stack and has no native support for IPv4 or IPv6 (from http://www.darkain.com/nintendo_ds/nifi.php):
"The DS does not internally support a TCP stack or any IPv4/IPv6 communications at all. This is why the DS cannot be played online without the use of tunneling... Ni-Fi is a layer 3 protocol on top of 802.11."
802.11x is a network layer, not a magical gateway to "Teh internets"
So it goes to reason that the McDonalds hotspot for the DS won't support regular tcp/ip, as its a hotspot for DS users to play with each other. You probably won't be able to connect your laptop to it. -
Close...
This has been out for a while (last april):http://users.belgacom.net/bn967347/
Here's another explanation: http://www.aaronrogers.com/nintendods/wifime.php
and also of DS interest: http://ds.darkain.com/hack/ -
Re:No, no, no, no... no.Actually, the DS is 802.11b but the OS on the handheld doesn't implement a TCP/IP stack. This site has a bit on it. From what I remember the DS h4x0r community has managed to put together a =>win2k driver for a particular wifi card chipset as well as a "server" of sorts which allows a DS to download images to play.
I only know this from googling around on wireless hacks for these things because I have one. Hey, I started a long train commute back before the PSP was out, I couldn't wait
:-/ Perhaps someone will get the bug to RUB THE LINUX ON IT'S SKIN as it were. Yup, kernel module, that'd be nice. Perhaps I need to get upto speed on programming for the kernel... -

Re:Boring...
No, it uses infrastructure mode. The reason it isnt tunneled is because it doesnt use TCP/IP at layer 3 and up of the OSI model.
-
Re:I thought the article said...
Screen Shot? - It isn't quite "Linux", but it IS for the DS, and known as "DarkStar"

How much hardware will they figure out?
There is still very little known information about the cool hardware features like the touchpad, WiFi, etc. While they (the hacker community in general) have figured out how to tweak things like model data in Metroid Prime, they still haven't figured out how to get the WiFi to work fully. Based on what is currently known the DS doesn't support IPv4 or any public protocols on a higher layer than OSI Layer 2. This means it might still be a while before someone gets a working web browser or telnet client on the DS. However, given the amount of hacks available for the GBA, I'm confident that they'll figure out all the cool tricks pretty soon. Then I won't have to worry about buying a PDA and I'll have an excude for having "using" my DS during work.

Re:DS usb power cable - Correction! READ!
actually, no, they arent 100% the same. the power ratings are the same, but if you notice the picture of the three power adapters on the site, you will notice they are indeed slightly different adapters. link
yes, they may be interchangable, but no, they are not the exact same adapter. -
Blog Worm
we think we may have the very first blog worm this past weekend as well. after reports of a potential security exploit in LiveJournal, a small team went to work to create a "proof of concept" self-replicating javascript code designed specifically to post itself in a viewers journal.
More information can be found here
a basic example of self-generating javascript code can be found here -
just for the record
the gameboy has already had HTTP servers and other things writen for it.. i am *not* make this up... im *not* trying to make another april fools reply here... seriously, there was an HTTP server. the GBA has also done things such as run visualizations for winamp... the GBA's serial port can be linked to a PC's serial port for communications. my GBA project
and on another note.. i would just like everyone to know that the original GBA and the GBA-SP are the EXACT SAME in terms of hardware... the "SP Platform" actually sounds a lil unedicated, since they are both exactly the same (except for the headphone jack, and the batteries)
and on a final note, considering the GBA can read AND write clash carts inserted into it... how hard do you think it would be to actually store an OS on one, and compile it using GCC designed for the ARM7 CPU anyways? plus, with the adition of a keyboard connected to the serial port, this makes it that much easier to work with.
