Prior Art?
I believe there is prior art, found in an 18th century poem. I'd bet that typesetters had been mucking about with this stuff since the invention of movable type.

since we brought this up, it might be interesting for everyone to read and be aware of the year 2038 bug.
(by that time, we will all have at least 64-bit systems, but still a cause for concern, read the link) -
But we WANT to be out of it...
All us middle-aged geeks want to be well retired by 2038 so we don't have to deal with the *nix/Linux 32-bit date problem - or at least semi-retired so we can be called back on consultancy basis and hefty fee.

If this is a problem, then developers should start making ``patches'' for the year 2038.
Its interesting, how no one considered this would happen eventually and just started to use 64 bit ints to store this from the long run.
Someday, we will hit a very high year, and these sort of problems will hit us as well ... all I hope is that my body gets frozen so I can see that year ;) -
Re:Steam powered engines?In case you missed it, the Wright plane replica didn't fly. So lighter engines is obviously not the panacea here, but good aerodynamics may well be.
Of course, that steam engine was used (or not) in the flight that supposedly took place 4 years before the Wright's first flight. The much better documented flights 2 years later "were made by Whitehead in a monoplane powered with a kerosene burning engine.", using something like this three-cylinder, 18 horsepower, four-cycle motor constructed by Whitehead, approximately 1901. But actually "(Number 22) is run by a 40-horsepower kerosene motor of my own design, especially constructed for strength, power and lightness, weighing but 120 pounds complete... Ignition is accomplished by its own heat and compression; it runs about 800 revolutions per minute, has five cylinders and no fly-wheel is used. It requires a space 16 inches wide, 4 feet long and 16 inches high...".
All in all, this story shows how some things change (the way the patent office hands out patents), and soma things don't (like how theWrights use the same tactics as Microsoft when dealing with "partners"). Wait, strike that - what better way to show that an invention doesn't "contravene the known laws of science" than to have prior art? So nothing really changed.

An American inventor named Gustave Whitehead allegedly flew in Aug 1901.
Not only did he fly several years before the Wright Brothers, he did so for a longer distance and with far more control. He made several flights that were not only witnessed by many people, but which were also written about and published in Scientific American in 1901. You can read that article and several others on this web page.
Gustave Whitehead was an engineer who built engines for a living. His engine design was far superior to the Wright Brother's. The Wright engine leaked badly, had poor power, and was extremely inefficient. Whitehead's engine was much lighter and built to stricter tolerances. It, and others designed like it, went on to be used by several other aircraft manufacturers.
While the Wright brothers received fame for their flights, mostly through good press and savvy public relations, Gustave Whitehead concentrated on his engine business. He was fairly successful with his business until a prototype helicopter which used several of his engines crashed. He was blamed for the failure and was sued. He lost most of his money and died penniless. -

That's when the 32-bit integer number of seconds since epoch 1970 used for time-processing on almost all UNIX-like systems hits the limit. Still, no-one will still be using 32-bit systems by then, will they? Er, right. -

The letter you refer to is one in which he said that the Wright Brothers will get the credit for flying first.....
On this page referrence to the two letters is made. But there is a large amount of ambiguity about what he acheived in 1902.
Pearse's definition of 'flight' was far more rigorous than the Wright brothers'.
By that same definition the Wright brothers never 'flew' in 1903. They never got out of ground effect, and never for more than few seconds. People have long argued that Pearse's definition of flight is more complete than the Wrights' and so when he said that he never flew in 1902 - he meant it.... but by the same definition the Wrights didn't either.
So if flying in ground effect counts as first flight - Pearse's hops and short flights perhaps count too - from 1902.
When people look at the Wright flyer - it looks archaic..... but at the same time Pearse's aircraft was more sophistocated... his first aircraft was a remarkable invention embodying several far-sighted concepts: a monoplane configuration, wing flaps and rear elevator, tricycle undercarriage with steerable nosewheel, and a propeller with variable-pitch blades driven by a unique double-acting horizontally opposed petrol engine.
At the same time that the Wright Brother's were 'flying' in an oversized box kite Pearse was flying a machine that bears a remarkable similarity to modern day ultra-lights.
Whether or not the Wrights or Pearse flew first there is another who was flying around the same time Gustave Whitehead
"In the early morning hours of 14 August 1901, near Bridgeport, Connecticut, a small graceful monoplane took to the air with its inventor and builder, Gustave Whitehead at the controls,carrying him for half a mile before landing undamaged."
So probably the only thing you can claim about the Wright brothers is that they were masters of publicity well before their time. -

You are exactly right. Here is an article which explains the case in detail.
One of the links in the Slashdot article has this quote:
By trial and error, relying on his own intuition and audacity, Marconi conducted a series of experiments indicating that long-distance wireless communication was possible.
As you can see in the Tesla link I provided above, this statement is patently false. Marconi used the patents, research, and technical drawings of Tesla and faithfully duplicated Tesla's ideas. About the only thing Marconi stumbled into was the radio-reflecting layer in the atmosphere. This was not something he had planned, but instead discovered quite by accident. Marconi should not be credited at all in connection with radio, other than the fact that he managed to popularize it through his sensationalism.
This is similar to the case of the Wright Brothers. Their "first flight ever" was completed several years after another inventor, Gustav Whitehead, flew in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1901. There is a web page here with information on Whitehead and his flights. Basically, the Wright brothers managed to get better press and grabbed the title of first to fly from Gustav Whitehead, even though Whitehead was documented by several sources as having done it first.
