Re:REALITY
The Yucca mountain plant is looking less and less likely every day because of the sorts of things the people who write what you're reading about it are, if you'll excuse my bluntness, full of shit. You've heard the DHMO story, right? Now add political single-mindedness and no "it's only water" punchline. Yucca mountain is a victim of a massive FUD-flood from people who know their answer before the question's been asked.

Re:Probably highly toxic
dihidrogen monoxide!! Oh no, we're all gonna die!

Incomplete testing
Yes, but did they test for lethal amounts of dihydrogen monoxide? It would be irresponsible to not test for everything possible! Alarmists, take heed! Flee to the hills! Watch out for magnetism! Gravity is also especially harmful! ... regions near AM radio-broadcasting towers had 70 percent more leukemia deaths than those without. ... ... also found that cancer deaths were 29 percent higher near such transmitters. ... ... California's Department of Health Services reviewed all the current studies of EMF risks from power lines, wiring and appliances in 2002. It found no conclusive evidence of harm. However, links to childhood leukemia, adult brain cancer and Lou Gehrig's disease could not be ruled out. -
What about the fusion wastes?I'm shocked and surprised that no-one has even begun to consider the effects of fusion waste products, specifically Di-Hydrogen Monoxide. This substance has killed millions of people in the last hundred or so years, yet no one seems to DO anything about it.
According to the DHMO FAQ, this lethal substance is responsible for:- Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.
- Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.
- Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.
- DHMO is a major component of acid rain.
- Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.
- Contributes to soil erosion.
- Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals.
- Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.
- Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.
- Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.
- Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere.
- Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect.
Please do your part in warning your friends of this dangerous substance. - Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.

Forgive the stupid, but what's water?
Is it all forms of H2O, or only the liquid phase? The dictionary defines water as a liquid. You don't say "put some water cubes in my drink." It's not gaseous water, it's steam. It's not solid water, it's ice. Also, is it as dangerous as this Dihydrogen Monoxide I've been hearing about?

Re:Outstanding idea. . . and will never happen. .
Those people go ape about ANYTHING.
Indeed! Many of them had a case of 'holy shit, we have to outlaw this stuff' about this:
Dihydrogen Monoxide Research Division
After all, its corrosive properties with respect to metal, inhalation danger, and the fact that it's a component of acid rain should tell you something. -
Re:Where will it end?
Because they use dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO). This is the same chemical that caused the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl nuclear meltdowns. Hardly a safer way to hurt people. More details.

Re:Innocent until proven guilty?
I think you're right - I coulda sworn the burden of proof lies on the shoulders of the prosecution, not the defense. Would indeed be fun to turn up to such a court hearing, and make the case that yes, whilst you do admit buying such equipment, you also wish to confess to buying enough petrol in your lifetime to burn down a whole city block, and taking enough dihydrogen monoxide to kill hundreds of people, and that you have also learned to read another language, possibly making you vulnerable to evil influence from foreign empires.

a victory for the worker!
thank goodness... now these robots can replace the humans who before were exposed to deadly dihydrogen monoxide every time they took a sample!
thank you, robots, for doing such dangerous work! -
Re:Such a discovery!
Good luck on manufacturing a uranium neutron reflector!
What makes a uranium neutron different from any other neutron?
Hydrogen Hydroxide aka Dihydrogen Monoxide reflects neutrons pretty well. The mass of a Hydrogen atom and the fleeing neutron are similar so a good energy transfer takes place. Of course the dangers of Hydrogen Hydroxide are still being studied. ;) -
Re:I call BS!
It's also just like pointing out the ever-present danger of Dihydrogen Monoxide!

Re:Well, Okay...As long as we don't fill them with that dangerous chemical DiHydrogen Monoxide
Don't forget that DHMO is a major ingredient in Acid Rain and gaseous DHMO can cause burns on exposed skin

More to be concerned about...
I hear the military also use di-hydrogen monoxide.
Are we just going to stand by and watch this go unchallenged?

Re:Not to rain on his parade...
unless you are storing the hydrogen mixed with oxygen, and I doubt that they would be that dumb
Wow, around here, they recommmend a tank of mixed hydrogen and oxygen as part of an earthquake preparedness kit!
OH MY GOD, the stuff is literally coming out of my plumbing - RUN RUN RUN - The world is ending!
At least I'm not dumb enough to drink the stuff!

Re:"Water"-cooling
Personally the idea of using a chemical as a coolant doesn't put me at ease...
I completely concur; I keep hearing about the dangers (and pervasiveness!) of Dihydrogen Monoxide, and don't understand why the Powers that Be haven't done anything about this health and environmental danger yet...

Re:Warning: Coffee contains DHMO
Or maybe they read the articles recently about a public health official who read this website and immediately issued a health warning. Try Googling for more examples.

Warning: Coffee contains DHMO
It's surprising one can even survive to 10 cups of coffee, when most coffee is contaminated with DHMO.
For those who are not aware of the dangers of this substance, dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO.
Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Exposition to it gaseous form may cause burns, permanent scars and even death.
Symptoms of DHMO ingestion include sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance.
For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.
Dihydrogen monoxide is also known as hydroxyl acid, and is the major component of acid rain. It has been found that malignant cancer cells only develop in its presence.
The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its "importance to the economic health of this nation.". It's commonly used as an industrial solvent and coolant, as a fire retardant, in the distribution of pesticides, in abortion clinics, and lots more.
I created a community against DHMO in Orkut. You're all invited to join it.
You can also check the official Dihydrogen Monoxide FAQ -
Dangers of dihydrogen monoxideIn case people are not aware of the dangers there is a very informative web site that highlights more dangers in addition to it lethality when inhaled. Some of these include:
Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.
Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.
DHMO is a major component of acid rain.

Re:Grandiose vision (to be forgotten after Nov. 2)
Yes, Methane. A clear and present weapons of mass destruction related program activity indicator. Furthermore, we have reason to believe they may not have stopped their destructive Dihydrogen Monoxide production, but merely moved it all underground.

Re:Stupid Fish
The primary failure in this articles is not the findings, but they deliberately sidestepped the fact that they didn't use pure water - it was pre-contaminated with DHMO, "DHMO is a constituent of many known toxic substances, diseases and disease-causing agents, environmental hazards and can even be lethal to humans in quantities as small as a thimbleful."
It's obviously a plot to blame the toxic effects of this little known but widely used oxidizer on buckballs instead of DHMO.

Re:Come on CA
If this constitutes a "slick" website, then I'm Jeffry Zeldman!
No doctype, all upper case tags, badly aliased transparent gifs, font tags, a fucking hit counter, flashing animated gif menu bullets... not to mention that it looks like shit anyway!

From the DHMO FAQ...From the FAQ page, associated dangers section:

And be sure to check out the Material Safety Data Sheet.
More seriously, from the article I get the idea that the city wants to ban styrofoam cups anyway and had a paralegal investigating "dirt" on styrofoam. This probably won't help their cause :-). - DHMO is a major component of acid rain.

Site gives clue to its "veracity"
Right at the bottom of the home page are these words:
Note: content veracity not implied
Now, how can anybody with any brains put in motion a legislature without first double-checking the veracity of the content?!

Re:Revisit Sojourner!
Did you know that "destroys the entire earth" is a hyperbole to show that even minimal odds of great consequence can equal great risk?
Let me rephrase for you. There is a zero point zero zero zero chance that an RTG will destroy the earth, or even cause more damage than your gas tank exploding. Actually, zero point zero zero is rounding a bit. If you were willing to add a few billion more zeros, the uncertainty principle would say that the possibility exists of your plutonium (or gas tank for that matter) could start a super-massive blackhole that would suck in the earth, moon, and sun.
Hmmm... Okay, you can run and scream about the dangers of a super-massive blackhole now. While you're at it, warn people that the food they eat might be putting out minor amounts of radiation. Or that their backyard is full of the same materials used in nuclear weapons. Even better, warn the world about the dangers of Dihydrogen Monoxide. That shit is dangerous. :-P

Re:Prevention? Antidote?
This might be an opportune time to mention the campaign to Do Something about the growing danger posed by dihydrogen monoxide in the environment and in our very bodies.
One of my favorite bits is the reference to "award-winning U.S. scientist Nathan Zohner" who showed that "scientist Nathan Zohner concluded that roughly 86 percent of the population supports a ban on dihydrogen monoxide." This is true.
If you're a /. reader, you should be familiar with this story.
