I've started a fund for this. I won't be keeping any donations, they'll all be going to support Jon and others "accused" by the DVD-CCA.

Open HardwareOk, this is only partially on-topic.
I work on a couple of projects involving both software and hardware:
- OpenRemote - A remote control with many very neat features. Analog control, IR and RF communications (the site isn't nearly finished as I'm in the process of relocating to another province, yuck).
- OpenBIOS - A BIOS that doesn't suck. I've designed development hardware here.
The GPL is software specific, so I'm not sure what happens to hardware designs in GPLed projects.
Is there a hardware specific GPL-like license for these designs? Both of these designs are somewhat commercially viable (OpenBIOS for embedded projects with low to mid production and OpenRemote for consumer applications).
I would prefer it if my work could not be "embraced-and-extended." If a company modified a design, they would be obligated to release the details of the designs (schematics, microcode, etc).
Like Woz, I wish schematics came with everything. There are schematics for my bass amp inside when it is opened. That's a good thing. Schematics are generally no longer available with computers (except many embedded computers). -

Mirrors part 1Note: This mirror list has been copied from http://www.humpin.org/decss/, on January 2nd 2000 13:13 GMT
Mirrors since 28-Dec-99 added by me.
To my main DVD page (containing list of lists of mirrors) Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Temporary restraining order DENIED!
Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.
We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.
Here is the EFF's stance on this case.
If you need a REAL reason to host these files, try reading this. Truth has never been more purely distilled.Save a copy of this web page now!
We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.
Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.
Here is a 2600 story on this.
Explanation on legality of this information
The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.
Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:
NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.

How about this?
My version of an ideal emBallmer walking past the pearly gates of heaven.

Satanic Ballmer
How do you like my version
;)

You are the one the elephant should jump on! Hard!
What distro keeps the init.d directory in
/sbin? Not RedHat at least. And an rc.d directory just helps clean up that messy /etc. Altough, you are right in that upgrading from one dist to the next is a bit harder (But not impossible. Just insert a (Net-)boot disk and reboot. Select "upgrade" on the menu, if I recall correct) on RedHat. Anyway, over to the init-thingies: At least you are not using Slaskware, with its broken BSD init (It is not a real BSD init for several reasons, resulting in much dirtier init scripts). And as a last notice - Debian's SysV-init does not have any standardizd means for services to return their status (OK, Failed, Passed). This is a crusial fact that is the single reason besides from that I don't own one more computer to run Debian on, that I haven't ported Aurora to Debian yet... -
digital cable
I have been a beta tester for digital cable in my area (eastern TN) for a little over 6 months now. The cable box I use is made by Scientific Atlanta. You can see it here. Anyway... the point of this post is that I'm not waiting for the digital infastructure to be in place so I can get more channels or better picture, I want the 27mb/s that Time Warner is promising once the entire area is digital.
-
I can't but nominate my own project...
Sorry to say, but I do love my graphical front-end to init for Linux, Aurora (Check out its homepage). So I'l have to nominate it...
-
We NEED the high numbers
Why do all marketers and programmers screw up with the version numbers? The first tends to jump from 1.0 to 2000 in just one version, while the latter seems to like endless sub-versions a'la Linux 2.2.0-pre30-ac5...
I think i't all about what the swedish word "lagom" means - not too much, not too less, not extreme in any direction, not even extreme in not being extreme.
Why can not everyone settle for versions that are just integer numbers that increments by one for each new version? The numbers does not matter anyway - they only serve to enable us to see which of two versions is the newest. How much newer or cooler it is can not by any means be read out of those numbers!
Anyway, I've described another version naming system here. It describes a system that provides information about who is responsible for which version, and backward compatibility. If you wish to comment on it, drop me an e-mail! -

MirrorsYou have one bat and there are 100 million holes Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Save a copy of this web page now!
Current Mirrors Last updated: Wed, Dec 29, 3:14pm EST
Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceMuch thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

the easiest thing you can do...
...is buy a wrist pad for your keyboard AND mouse. A lot of people only buy a keyboard pad and don't realize their mouse hand is doing the exact same thing. I used to get pains after playing too much quake, but as soon as I got a pad the pain went away. It's cheap and effective.
If you have a 3M mousepad that won't work with a wrist-rest, do what I do: clip it on top of a pad that _does_ have a rest :P -

Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Explanation on legality of this information:
Attention
www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files.
UPDATE: Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
I have taken it upon myself to mirror the mirrors. So until such time as the hounds of hell come a-knocking at my door, I present for you this list:

Mirror listOh yeah
Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Explanation on legality of this information:
The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed. It was written by authors who expressly permitted and encourage the redistribution of this software and information. The purpose of this software is not, I repeat not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site are purely written by 3rd parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods, which is, again, completely legal. This software and information below make it possible for people who legally obtained their DVD movies to view them on their Linux systems.

Writing information about the way a certain protection scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or one of its members. The sources and programs on this site are purely written by 3rd parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods, which is, again, completely legal. This software and information below make it possible for people who legally obtained their DVD movies to view them on their Linux systems.
Attention
www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files.
UPDATE: Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
I have taken it upon myself to mirror the mirrors. So until such time as the hounds of hell come a-knocking at my door, I present for you this list:

WSU administration and harassment...
WSU's Information Technology department has on many occasions stiffled the speech of students... untill they make a noise. My freshman year here there was a "Holocaust Revisionist" site that recieved complaints. From chatting with a few people about it I heard that they were "temporarily restrained", as is in the power of IT officials, from further "harassing" anyone. After they caused a stink they got their website back and produced an official statement from IT.
Following a flamewar on alt.religion.universal-life in which I posted a link to a domain name's administrative contact information (through nsi.com's whois) the targeted party recieved numerous calls that resulted not from that post, but an anonymous post under false pretenses to another newsgroup containing that phone number.
I was found guilty of harassment for providing information on how to access that publicly accessable document. So I assumed the "administrative position" (duck and grab ankles) and gave up my @wsu.edu email for the summer.
My account reactivation was delayed for two weeks because one of the officials (cough**cough**cBoIuGgGhOT!**cough) tought that it was inappropriate use of my unix account to host this student group's site. There was no complaint ever associated with the page. Yet the administration felt that they had the right to restrict my speech in order to "protect" me from "inducing a liability" on to myself (i.e. I would be liable for anything that appeared on that page, any complaints on that page would be complaints against me).
I ran headlong at this one, contacting the Ombudsman and attending a moderated meeting with upper administration. They rolled over and gave me a verbal appology (no official statement). Part of the run-arround was that upper administration acted on "policy" that IT officials had no jurisdiction to invent. IT in fact had no said policy and I have yet to meet with said IT official's boss to discuss the event.
Once again the stink caused the administration to draft some more "policy". Now students are supposed to link to a copyright and a disclaimer off of their home pages. Want to bet noone's done that yet? The new "policy" also is rendered practically useless. It says "WSU does not restrict the contents of electronic mail of staff, faculty, and students or the contents of faculty, staff, and student individual World Wide Web (Web) pages linked to the official WSU Web pages beyond the restrictions inherent in complying with the law."
Interestingly it is a state law that no student of WSU may harass another individual in any way. Harassment, anything that is "anoying, disturbing or perturbing," is definedly quite broad! Here is a good site covering the legal theory surrounding such issues. Basically it supports restricting one-to-one speech to prevent harassment, but determines that one-to-many speech should be protected as free speech.
An importaint distinction should be made that I'm not sure the author covers. Newsgroup postings are a one-to-many medium, but the comments may be directed to (or at) an individual. In this way should criticizing an individual be considered harassment? What about warning others that you think this individual is bad news? "Harassment" says the WSU administration, and a violation of "student conduct."
So... don't like the postings of a WSU student? Complain to abuse@wsu.edu and they're screwed!
Too bad WSU's policy isn't like WWU's or UW's; even CWU's policy is more lenient! Looks like EWU is in the same boat that WSU is in. -

Explanation on legality of this information:
The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed. It was written by authors who expressly permitted and encourage the redistribution of this software and information. The purpose of this software is not, I repeat not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information neccesary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk.
UPDATE: Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
I have taken it upon myself to mirror the mirrors. So until such time as the hounds of hell come a-knocking at my door, I present for you this list:

musings ala Hacker's Tarotperhaps I've just been thinking about the Hacker's Tarot too much (some day I hope to illustrate them) but I can't help but think this is the kinda thing they're waiting for. For those not familiar I've tossed a copy on my homepage; I don't know the original author but they're truely a classic.
general idea design idea
basically the power of Linux is the open nature of the code, the distributed peer review, the flexibility of the development style and the wide range of people in the community. That's the secret to Linux... the community. the many hands of the community make lite work of the otherwise daunting.
so then... here's my idea for the cover....- center: an old cast iron vault stands open, it's contents - thick reams of printout - spilling out in bathed in a soft golden light. the smashed remains of various insectoid life forms litter the floor upon which the vault sits.
- surounding it: a diverse group of people surround the vault, they all view the revealed source with avid gazes. Streams of code flow between them to form a web of thought; which swats at a still remaining flying insect that has emerged from the source of revelation.
- bordering them: iconic representations of the various tasks performed in Linux are depicted as jigsaw puzzels, the pieces are being placed by many different hands. Some pieces come from the people; some from out of frame.
- background: montage of various pieces of code blends together into abstraction behind details, crystalizes into focus elsewhere.
- a lower corner: beaten up old double hung casement window, paint peeling sits in shadows. cob webs have formed clearly showing neglect and lack of use, one pane is cracked - the shards lie below. The windows is chained shut with rusty chains, locked with a large padlock. the glass has slight tints of red, blue, green and yellow - it is dirty and opaque: none of the code in the background shows through.
some various details:- the printouts in the vault are source code - given sufficient resolution it could be various portions of Linux. It is also possible that it could be in mixed media: hardcopy, tape, disk, CD, an editor window...
- the people suroundding it should be recognizable... Linus must be there, as well as Alan, Eric and other luminaries of the Linux, Gnu, OSS world; equally important are complete anonymous unknown "Jon Q. Public" types. probably can go from shoulders up or so. folks like Bill Gates and Steve Balmer must not in any way be possible interpretations of any of them. There should be a good cross of gendre, ethnic and socio faces. (especially a good scarry biker beard and dark sunglass wearing Alan, and the mild manered geek next door-ish Linus in his specs).
- the icons should be pixelated before being sliced into jigsaw pieces...they should also be generic enough to NOT look like any specific product. (the opposite would also be an idea... but then you're bound to leave someone out....) ideas for logos as follows:
- an envelope with an email address on it
- that "no clouds" picture of earth wrapped around a sphere, with "HTTP://" glowing like a firebrand
- an abacuss
- a typewritter
- a painter's easle
- a terminal window
- a file cabinet
- some documents on a silver tray
- a brick wall with flames on one side and a scroll on the other (or a theif on one side and a pile of gold coins on the other)
- . . .
- an envelope with an email address on it
- the various mascots could go with either the people or the puzle pieces. tux, the bsd daemon, the gimp, shadow man, the suse gecko, the perl camel, the gnu...
- The hands assembling the pieces, like the people should be a mix of people; a dainty feminine hand with manacured nails next to a knuckle sandwich maker with grime under the nails and hair on the knuckles; everything in between. (a robotic arm? a prosthetic hand?)
- the code streams between the people should be both ascii and binary (hex??)
- an alternate background would be the source as tux
I know there are more details floating in my head... but it's been a long week and I'm tired... I'll post others tommorow if the thread's alive. - center: an old cast iron vault stands open, it's contents - thick reams of printout - spilling out in bathed in a soft golden light. the smashed remains of various insectoid life forms litter the floor upon which the vault sits.

If you can get your hands on the rights to http://rio.dhs.org/penguin.html, I think that would be great. You can't argue that it doesn't "Show Linux".

I've missed the quickies!Well, some of them at least. Selling Dalnet on eBay isn't anything big
... why, I bought AOL on ebay last month. Ah well. The fufme was IMO very well put together
... it's hard to tell if it's a joke or not ... not like realhamster or luddite industries where *something* eventually gives it awayI think they should combine forum2000 and Askjeeves, I think that would serve them well. AJ seems to have picked up more bad habits of other search engines lately, and who knows, with a moral and philosophical basis it could all be back to normal.
I want to ask the powder puff girls complicated questions
... see how they answer. It should be an interesting nite. Thanks for the quickies! -
For more information...
I suggest checking out the Caffeine and Coffee FAQs - click here.
I also just finished working with the FAQ's maintainer on a trimmed down version for Palm Pilot (in case you eve need to decide between Sugar Free Mr. Pibb and Dr. Pepper striclty on Caffeine content). I don't think he's linked them yet, but you can go to my page to get them (in the Palm Pilot section).

LANdb
(Ack, forgot my
/. acct info...) I'm currently working on a similar project, which is primarily based on MySQL, but easily portable to other RDBMS's. Totally web-based, all Perl, etc. Coincidentally, I released v0.70 this morning. Perhaps some of what we've done can help... Here's the site, if you're interested. -

They missed this one...Actually, it probably doesn't qualify, but for those who didn't see it on User Friendly yesterday, http://rio.dhs.org/penguin.html has a version of Tux done in kernel source.
It's really rather spiffy, although it gives your browser some grief.

Re:Free domain names???
Monolith (ml.org) closed shop for good.
Three of the former employees have started a new service under the name Domain Host Services (dhs.org).
They run their service on time, money and hardware donations from kindhearted folks. They have several domain services, one of which is pointing yourname.dhs.org to a static or even a dynamic IP address.
So far they have proven to be quite stable. HEad on over to their Member page and signup for a free account.

Linux needs these flamewars
I understand people having a preference of C, C++, Python, etc. (My choice is up to me) But come on fellow programmers!!! We write programs for the USER! Not the Programmer! GTK is the leader-- as far as where it's at. QT of course, is great, but It's not something that we can even support (er.. $1500 for a license, when M$ Visual C++ is $1000) I say we dump all these stupid toolkits, port GTK to all the languages (And not as a layer, but as a complete port) and be absolutely sure that C++GTK (GTK++
:) and GTK+ and GTKthon or whatever silly name you can think of; err, make sure they are completely seamless in function. Everything has to look and feel the same! -- Everything!!! There should be no variation, I should be able to drag and drop anything anywhere. In fact, the KDE folks are expressing a great interest in dropping QT in favor of something more free. GTK-- (The current GTK+ C++ layer) is slow as hell! Show a little care for your OS, programmers, don't duplicate work, improve it! (Shameless bit of advertising: http://altair.dhs.org until I think of a better name) -
Re:Missle Test--Visible From LAI took a few pictures from outside my dorm at Harvey Mudd College (40 miles outside of LA). Unfortunately, my digital camera isn't terribly sensitive to light, and most of the pictures came out blurry. I have put the three sharp ones online at

More precisely, you can find a picture here. You change the 1 in the url with a number from 2 to 5 if you want to see more pics, because I'm too lazy to put up five links here.
