Screw Java - let's see em fix the small things...
An example? Check out this bug. From what I can tell it has been in there since 4.01 and maybe earlier. Let's see them put REAL support for PNGs. I doubt we will see it though.

What about "TechnoPaganism"?
In an article I recently wrote for the WSU Association of Pagan Students' Mabon newsletter, I used you as an example of a Pagan individual who is technically competant (statistically 17 to 22% of the NeoPagan community in 1985 -- Adler - DDTM 2nd Ed.), and liken you in that reguard to VRML inventor Mark Pesce.
What is your conception of a "TechnoPagan" and do you consider this a viable and/or developing NeoPagan tradition? -

Visor pics here
Click here for a scanned photo of the upcoming Visor that was published by Tap Magazine. I happened upon a link from a Palm newsgroup. Looks remarkably similar to a Palm Pro/III and surely wouldn't embarrass any "self-respecting business person."

Compaq's business is not profit>They're a business. Their job is to make money.
Um, no. Their job is to increase shareholder value, which is not necessarily the same thing. It could be that becoming part of the Linux/Open Source/GNU/GmOne movement will mean increased long term profits, even at the expense of short term profits.
Companies are supposed to be fairly long-sighted entities. If they're not, it's bad news.

Beware- 10000 386s = Top Secret!
I live not far (nor close) to LaCrosse, so I emailed the head honcho about a visit.
Synopsis: This project is so secret that a donor can't come see where his machine will go.
I was interested in the project before - but now it just sounds like a scam.

Re:CD-RW?
CD Backup, which is based on Backburner, are both good and rapidly developing solutions to the linux CD-R and CD-RW backup questions. Furthermore, they can be used to archive mounted partitions which addresses the original question of how to backup multiple OS's.

Open Source derailed, or my current lack of fun wi
In the not so distant past, before x11amp became xmms, I made a xmms port to AIX. Then before I had a chance to roll the changes back into the common source 4front took over and closed the CVS server. Just recently they made an OSS port to AIX. Now, there isn't any 'need' for a direct output plugin since you just use the OSS plugin in xmms. The only problem is that there seems to be a conflict of interest on the part of 4front because they are trying to sell copies of OSS for $30. I get the feeling from the complete lack of response from them that they are not interested in the direct output plug-in because it could cause competition for their proprietary (for sale) OSS driver. Look at the message you get when you try to download a cripple ware OSS driver.
Please fill out this form before downloading Open Sound System The evaluation copy of OSS comes with a FREE limited time evaluation license which is activated on the day you install OSS. The software will only work for a limited time and has to be unloaded and reloaded into the operating system periodically. You may contact 4Front Technologies for technical support. -
TechnoPaganism (info and a call for contributors)
The important thing to stress is that science, mysticism, philosophy, etc. are only models of the "reality" we observe. We too often mistake our models of reality for that which they describe. This misperception has been described as "The map is not the territory," or "The menu is not the meal."
Nicely put... there are also the "brains in a vat" and "what's under your nuttshell?" problems that force us to define our reality not in terms of an absolute "truth" but as a subset of our perceptions. Therefore the subjective truth of any "thing" is in its perception. Where a computer or the internet may be well defined in terms of its technological aspects, the practical accomplishments that it makes are not and are sometimes incredible enough to be described as "magick".
from the parent:
Davis does an excellent job exploring the roots of our present technological society in the alchemical secret societes of the Middle Ages, and the present day raise in paganism amongst technologists.
IMHO this is an excellent thesis that is near the foundation of TechnoPaganism. It and several other ideas that expunged and I have explored are steadily coming together on our TechnoPaganism site. Quite a bit of this content manifests itself earlier in newsgroups (alt.techno-shamanism and the like) and we're hoping to start an open list serv.
Part of my admiration for this sort of thing is that it's totally decentrallized. Noone has really made a definitive claim to be the originator or leader of TechnoPaganism (with maybe one exception aside: I liked his previous website better). There are a few authors of TechnoPagan content, but no deffinative scripture (allthough this artice is quoted enough to be close, mirrored here if wired is too slow). So we're trying to take a more anthropological than phillosophical approach to this (as such we've separated our personal beliefs from general TechnoPaganism).
With that regard I'd like to invite anyone that has any sort of interest in this to join a discussion on it and possibly help write a FAQ or two (TechnoShamanism, may cover a wider social/cultural community). ... hmmm I'm really tempted to try and archive this discussion.
DISCLAIMER: Please realize that we're not trying to "get" anything from this but hightened spirituality. This is on my PC which is not exactly a monstrous web server and my HTML skills are not as devistatingly awesome as some. Consider all material contained therein GPL'ed. -

Forget the RiAA... I did it my way!
I personally own a record company and guess what, we want you to pirate our stuff. The theory behind that is band exposure.. So "Mr. Big Man" can =X my white butt.

GOTO considered harmful. This isn't news (I recall reading about a similar achievment by BT last year in Data Communications[1]; the scientists had come up with a wall-sized LCD-based display for videoconferencing, a 25 sq. cm. LCD panel for status panels or embedding in T-shirts[2], and a 1 sq. m. sized display with wild-eyed uses such as a stained-glass window replacement). It's still pretty cool though--but the day my 8573-401's plasma display panel is taken from me is the day it's pried from my cold, dead, RSIed fingers.
Cheers,
Joshua.[1] I like that domain name.

Re:"wanted" poster!
ok, I made my own poster. It's in pagemaker format (6.5), which no one can read. I tried exporting to pdf, but it complained that I didn't have a postscript driver. Whatever. If someone wants to convert this to PDF, which anyone can read and print out, that'd be cool. I think all of the fonts are generic enough that everyone will have them.
Here is a Pagemaker wanted poster. -
Quicktime / NT problemsI just downloaded QT4 (being the Star Wars nut that I am) and found that the trailer will not run all the way through. I would think that my hardware is sufficient (PIIx2/400, 128 MB PC100 SDRAM, UW SCSI)...but the OS is NT4 SP4.
I have encountered this problem before -- the solution then was to move the file to the NT boot drive and run it from there. Appears to be a bandwidth / caching issue. Now, this solution won't work. I can't even get it to work by streaming the file off my server (10 Mbit ethernet) -- another previous solution.
This isn't just the 25 MB trailer having problems -- it appears to be a Quicktime player problem. My other quicktime files experience the same problem. Does anyone know of a solution? Perhaps the (Quicktime?) settings need to be tweaked?
On the topic of trailer downloads starwars.countingdown has links to mirrors of this file. If someone is good enough to make a MPEG conversion, I have no doubts a link will show up there. Just so countingdown doesn't get

Good article.I liked the article (although it failed to mention OpenBSD, which is the ideal BSD distribution for Intel (NetBSD from what I hear still rules for Macintosh/VAX platforms)). I do wish BSD would get more credit; BSD is still a better kernel in terms of raw performance than Linux. And BSD has been aroud much longer and is far more mature. OTOH, Linux has that dynamic element you only get when you have idealistic young kids working with it who think they're going to change the world (and don't realise what we think is cool was done by IBM on their System/3[68]s 25 years ago). In addition, it's hard to be a BSD newbie--the culture is cruel to the unknowledged.
That said, BSD is going to be with us for a while longer, if only because of the ease with which GNU/Linux binaries can be run on BSD and the ease with which device support can be migrated over (I won't address licencing issues here).
I haven't seen the Matrix movie, but I did hear on Systalk that FreeBSD was central to the production of said movie.
Cheers,

Memes. There also seems to be a latent assumption that what survives is good; that a meme which is capable of surviving is somehow the best one. This is not true. The wife-beating meme is very capable of survival, but is also bad.
This idea that there are all these self-organising energy systems where everything automatically comes out the best way is nonsense. The only way you ever get anything to work is by people working hard to make it that way (not that people working hard is guarantee of success). GNU and Linux did not arise out of some self-organising flow of energy between hackers. Instead, we hackers sat down at our displays and banged out code.
