Re:Thenk you for the heads up
http://digg.com/tech_news/University_of_Illinois_joins_the_RIAA_and_MPAA_against_Piracy
Sent Mar. 31, 2007, over a year ago. It's not exactly news that the great state of Illinois is rolling over on this. :p Heck, one of their extortion centers operates locally: http://www.p2pnet.net/story/15512
That being said: I can't find a reference to the legislation being referred to in the article; does someone have a link? -
Don't taste me, bro!
"Is this thing on? Tasting, tasting, 1, 2, 3... SLURP!" -Tommy Smothers, Smothers Brothers LIVE at the Purple Onion
"In a nation-wide taste test, ICAAN's hamburgers were named the best in the country. Tasters said the burger had a certain "je ne sais quoi." In other news, scientists have identified "je ne sais quoi" as a lack of rat feces"

"How does your Domain Taste??" -Digg on domain tasting
"But I don't LIKE spam!" -'Woman' in Monty python skit about the taste of spam.com
"A domain is the place that someone has people who work for them take care of. There's four kinds of domains: Domain of the King, Domain of the [insert name of some kind of Lord of the Rings monster here], Domain of the Public, and Domain of the Name. They have long been sought after by those in positions of power, such as kings or wiki creators. When it comes to domains, it's pretty much like this: in the right hands, everything is peachy. But in the wrong hands, vampires crawl from the bowels of the Earth and feast at our eyeballs." -Uncyclopedia on Domains
"Taste is the Greek god of individual preference. Inbred son of Zeus and Apollo, Taste usually governs endless and pointless debates between retarded entities on internet forums. In sculptures and various other artworks he is depicted wearing a bean flavoured cape and ice-cream shoes, holding a banana-like sceptre." -Uncyclopedia on taste
"Absolute catholicity of taste is not without its dangers. It is only an auctioneer who should admire all schools of art." -Oscar Wilde on taste
"Domain tasting is the practice of a domain name registrant using the five-day "grace period" at the beginning of the registration of an ICANN-regulated second level domain to test the marketability of the domain." - Wikipedia on Domain Tasting
"On the streets these days, a dime bag of kittens costs a pretty penny." - Oscar Wilde on slashdot's Offtopic moderation -
Re:More complex, more problems
I saw it when it hit digg, which was apparently 1 Year, 220 days ago. I don't recall the specific model of hardware or software, but I've since used it on several other systems as well.
At least one example- while not anywhere near top-quality equipment, the Microsoft Fingerprint Reader is vulnerable, and is the class of device that you're likely to see on most consumer machines, as well as in a good percentage of offices. -
Re:Roughly Drafted is not a credible sourcePoke around the site for a few minutes and it will be come really clear that Roughly Drafted is just some moron running a Microsoft hate blog. Chances are these "documents" are either made up or exaggerated. Can you cite a specific instance of Roughly Drafted posting fabricated documents in the past, or is this just an ad hominem attack? I wouldn't go so far as saying RoughlyDrafted "made up" the "documents" like the GP did, but I don't think it's unreasonable for the GP to opine "chances are" Daniel Eran (RoughlyDrafted's writer) "exaggerated."
Daniel Eran, who comments on Slashdot (in the third person) as DECS, often submits his own RoughlyDrafted articles (in the third person) using pseudonyms like "peter deacon", "Redrum", and "rdmreader".
Daniel Eran is also somewhat infamous for being banned from Digg because he tried to game their system by using multiple accounts to "digg" his stories and get them on their front page:

Re:Why Subscribe?
I'm not too worried about Comcast. The things they do (especially this and the whole guy-sleeping-on-the-job thing) would only serve to either get people moving to other (non-cable?) ISPs (if any) or revolting for fair cable-company laws; it's all shooting themselves in the foot to me.
I am far, far more sickened by my favorite evil Northeast US company, Cablevision; they do seem to provide good service (my parents get cable and my siblings get their Triple Play; I've seen no problems with service, but the "Caller ID on iO TV" spooks me a bit), at the expense of basketball teams worth rooting for (FYI, Garden owners: free food does not make up for team negligence...not that you'd care with the money you make with that Triple Play and its associated annoying ads), competing stadiums (granted, Verizon is no innocent company by any means), competing ISPs, new subway/train stations, and maybe even commuter security (Cablevision suggests otherwise, but their words are hard for me to take as told).
To answer parent comment's question, I suppose people subscribe because...well, when you get email, Colbert, VoIP and such powerful, important abilities like the ability to RickRoll others and Digg the result (ugh *vomits*), who cares about silly things like fair and lawful treatment of consumers, sports fans, and competing ISPs?
Me, I'll use DSL (Verizon, which hasn't given me much, if any, throttling problems) until there's a good free wireless network or whatever, and I've already subscribed to a different TV provider that offers HD free (I don't care that much for Olbermann). To those far from good antenna coverage: good luck, and ditch cable anyway.

Re:The word "owned" comes to mind

This is why multi-threaded code is important.
This is one of the main reasons I decided to stick with a threaded model for concurrency in FreeSWITCH. There are many alternatives cropping up to obtain concurrency in your applications but if you stick to a threading model you will gain the benefits of more cores on faster CPUs and better schedulers in the kernels. The number of concurrent instructions are going up much faster than the actual speed of a single CPU these days.

Re:Congratulations on inventing MMOs
Blizzard have released many expansions without cost. The most recent patch, 2.4, added a whole new island with end-game content.
True, but Blizzard also makes more money off of subscriptions, so they can afford to add "free" content easier. If I run a game that has 200,000 subscribers (I wish...) and Blizzard has 2,000,000 subscribers (approximate North American subscriptions for Blizzard, but also for the sake of easy math), then Blizzard is making 1000x more income. To the individual players, however, they are paying the same amount of money. My game will have to find extra money from some source in order to provide more content; that money comes from expansion packs. And, as someone pointed out, it does take money to keep the service going. You'll notice that a game like Guild Wars doesn't charge a subscription fee, but they put out a lot of expansion packs to keep the income coming in.
Keep in mind that this difference in playerbases doesn't necessarily mean that one game is 'better' than the other. More people have seen (and probably bought copies of) Titanic than Blade Runner, but that doesn't mean that Titanic is a better movie; if you think it does, then you're on the wrong site and probably should go to a currently more popular site. -
Re:I don't like Richard DawkinsI find he is becoming more a self-appointed spokesman for atheists (a priest, if you will) - and is presenting just the one point of view (dogma), in exactly the same way the various churches do. I'm on his side of the issue and agree with what he says but sometimes how he says it really doesn't come across too well. There was the interview he had with Pastor "gay hookers and crystal meth" Haggard. Haggard destroyed Dawkins in that exchange. Haggard's position was bullshit buttressed by hypocrisy but he was so good at it, Dawkins didn't have a chance.
http://digg.com/general_sciences/Ted_Haggard_Tells_Richard_Dawkins_He_is_Arrogant
The sad thing is that most people don't have the time or inclination to research the message, they'll just look at the messenger. If the advocate of falsehoods wears a nicer suit and has a smoother delivery, he'll win on style points and the audience will not consider what the advocate of the truth had to say, even if the truth is on his side! -

Re:I'm a little disappointed . . .
I agree that it's somewhat disappointing that they settled when you consider it as a lost opportunity to test the GPL in court, but hopefully the developers well *well* compensated for their trouble. Perhaps they'll donate a portion of their settlement proceeds to helping others fight these cases. How many "little guys" are out there who might have legitimate infringement claims, but are too scared or too broke to stand up to the legal muscle of a large corporation?
On a separate note, I just had to Digg this one. The more ways the news can get out about this, the better off the community as a whole is, and it increases visibility for the validity of the GPL. After all, if the case had no merit, why would a megacorp like Verizon settle? These stories need more exposure. -
My view is different
As a Han Chinese who have lived in US for the last 10 years, and as someone who have spent some of his most memorable childhood years in Tibetan region, and who have a cousin married a Tibetan man, I am saddened by the whole things. I am especially disappointed by the rampant ignorance, bigotry and hatred displayed by all sides towards one another on most of the media, forums, and blogs. I don't think people are making any positive contributions to the situation. For people whose daily lives are actually involved, you guys can feel all the moral righteousness you want, but it means nothing, and you are only making things worse. Many Tibetan people think US can solve all their problems, but that is just a completely false illusion. Please do not help perpetrate that illusion any more. Perhaps you guys do not even realize that it is just a illusion because you guys are the victim of your own media's propaganda? For example, I have repeatedly pointed out that YouTube is blocking your access to a video about Tibet, no one seems to care. As someone who is already calling this country home, I find it frightening that you guys just voluntarily filter out information that does not fit your preconception.
-
Re:Youtube also block China!! Haha
YouTube block USA visitors from certain Videos too. Especially if it has something to do with Tibet. I've attempted to post this story here a few days ago (March 10), but it didn't go through. So I posted on digg at http://digg.com/political_opinion/Youtube_censors_BBC_s_documentary_in_US Or you can check the post on my blog http://yyhh.org/blog/2008/03/youtube-censors-bbcs-documentary-usa It appears that TouTube attempts to manipulate what information US people can see. This is disgusting.

Slashdot, Reddit, and Digg... Congrats Apple.
Apple got this same fake story to the front page of reddit and digg also. Steve Jobs should rejoice at his marketing teams success. I wonder if they used companies like Subvert and Profit to get this promoted to front page news?

Ron Paul is not going to surrender, and John McCain will not take the Republican nomination without the fight of his life. Your donations and work as Precinct Leaders are needed now more than ever. Thank you all for everything you've done so far -- the revolution has just begun.
He cut back on his campaign staff, he didn't call it quits. Its headlines like this in the media that confuse people and cause them to find someone else to support because they trust that big media (and apparently small media) are telling the truth and providing the people with actual news.

Re:Roy Schestowitz, take with prescribed NaCl
You might want to tell him that.

Roy Schestowitz, take with prescribed NaClI'm not sure I understand why this person's opinions are even relevant (obviously the submitter runs the site where this piece was published and needs the ad revenue, not that any normal person would bother submitting something like this to Slashdot). "...argues Roy Schestowitz"? As in "pursuant to the previous insightful and established opinion we've all come to expect from Roy Schestowitz"? Please.
Roy Schestowitz is a non-entity who spends 18 hours a day crapflooding USENET (just page back and see who posts there), Digg, Propeller and any number of social bookmarking and discussion websites. This, aside from running who knows how many attack blogs that target Novell, Xandros, Linspire and many others beg the question of whether this is just a lonely poor student with no life whatsoever or a very organized group of people with some serious corporate backing.
Anyone deranged enough to post things like these should be, in my opinion, permanently ignored. The Microsoft-Yahoo merger needs to be analyzed from many angles by people who know what they're talking about, not by paid drones who regurgitate what they read in other blogs and are trying to make a name for themselves by disrupting communities to push their agendas.

It's due to the death in China and Digg
It's because of this:

and also this:
http://www.digg.com/world_news/Blogger_Beaten_to_Death_in_China_for_Filming_Argument ..where someone point out that "xkcd's coming wasn't quite so funny any more" but did not provide a direct link.
I can't believe I'm the first one to point this out! -
Re:Toshiba Fell Victim To The Xbox Demographic
not quite. I am trying to draw the best comparison I can but compared to what you described I think neither the BD/HDDVD situation nor the vhs/dvd situation is an apples to apples comparison of the situation.
What we're lacking, is a single format due to MS trying to monopolize the competition. I honestly hope that china HD format kicks off instead and crushes both, or that people just pick one and accept it. We all know each of these format changes is completely retarded, with blu ray saying they won't play adult film and other assorted stupid things. This is standard MS policy, create "options" in ways they aren't needed. -

Re:why brute force?
Once something went wrong with my wireless router, I'd bought one for the first time a few weeks back, and I'd broken the settings. So I went up to it and hit the reset key at the back but forgot to set the password again. Then one day I came upon one of those list of passwords and I said, "Ha ha, imagine what idiots would leave the default passwords on." So I scrolled right to the bottom and there's my router (it's slightly more than a wireless modem), and there's the password and it suddenly hits me. It was on digg, that list.

USA has always demanded on a way to cheat
USA has always demanded on a way to cheat in their election systems. Fraud-proof systems just won't do for the americans.
Printing these on demand will simply let any insider print and fill out as many as are needed to get the right candidate to win.
2004 election results and exit polls prove a clear fraud took place. The US Secret Service, the media nor the FBI are doing nothing, not a single arrest to day on the matter. And CIA is still flying torture jets filled with cocaine. The criminals are running the show and americans are busy playing ostritch. -
Re:Did they include...
You know, if this keeps up Microsoft will try to get a patent on sudo. wait...
Come on guys, can we just convince some non-nerds that software patents are a bad idea already? Seriously, how about I get a patent on turning left in a truck? If that won't fly, why not try adding "on the Internet" to any possible verb and patenting it. With the system we have in place it's likely to go through. -
