Microsoft bought the Vote of the Swedish National Standards Body. What a coincidence: There's long been a question mark over the relationship of the Swedish Government and the MPAA:

Re:Lies, damned lies, and statisticsNoone's disputing the fact that Apple's (deservedly) growing.
What the OP was pointing out was the headline implies that one in six Laptops sold are Apple branded. That's false. More like one in nineteen (according to the linked article):data it released last month put Apple's share of U.S. sales at 5.6%, far behind leaders HP (28.4%) and Dell (23.6%) but tied with Gateway.

Re:Yes it is. RootkitRevealer says so
Please save the industry some time and money by choosing another profession, if indeed you have anything to do (hopefully not) with IT or programming. The "tool" which you ostensibly know how to use yet are unable to understand, identifies vectors that rootkits/malware have used/are likely to use. The presence of said vectors (e.g. a certain type of registry key) does not necessitate a rootkit; one can only conclude that your system is in a state that is correlated to rootkits. The documentation for Rootkit Revealer, if you had bothered to read it, says as much. There are, however, websites where you'll feel right at home. I suggest Digg.

Re:That doesn't make any sense.
That doesn't make any sense. What do you mean by "most significant bits"? And why would they be 0?
Breaking it down into itty bitty words because you're stupid:
Things are digital because they're made of 1's and 0's (digits a.k.a. bits). Digital music works by measuring how loud the music is, thousands of times per second, and writing that down as a number (called a "sample"). The number represents a fraction (how loud the sample really was versus the loudest possible sample) and is usually written down using 16 bits. One bit (the least significant bit) represents the the smallest possible change in loudness that we can measure. The next bit represents twice that loudness, and so on. The 16th and final bit is the most significant bit (MSB). If the MSB is a 1, that means the sound is at 50% volume or higher (again, versus the loudest possible sample). If the MSB is a 0, that means the sound is at less than 50% volume.
Now, connecting the dots because we've already established that you're very, very stupid (even for an Anonymous Coward):
Today's music is very loud. Grown-ups with fancy jobs called "sound engineers" are paid very well to do something called "dynamic range compression" to the music. "Dynamic range" is the difference between the quietest parts of the song versus the loudest parts of the song; compressing it means that even the quiet parts of the song are loud. Since the sound engineers made sure that the entire song is very loud, all or nearly all of the samples will be at 50% or greater volume. Therefore, all or nearly all of the samples will have a "1" for the MSB. Since we already know that the MSB is a 1, we don't need to write it down anymore, and we can save on space.
Ba dum bum. Now go play in traffic, or visit Digg, or something else more appropriate for your level of intellect.
Stupid people. Ruining jokes since 500kYA.

Re:Ever notice? This "smear" is a matter of pointing to documented and uncontested history. It has certainly been contested, by Ron Paul himself in the Texas Monthly magazine in 2001. Ron Paul said those were not his words, and were those of a ghostwriter. I am curious -- which presidential candidate do you support? Is there someone with a more consistent voting history, more unwavering support of the Constitution, and more principled statesmanship than Ron Paul? If so, I would like to hear about this person, as I would be willing to change my signature below to accommodate such a candidate.

Re:Another Stupid Global Warming DenierOne of the BIG DATA POINTS of the anthropogenic global warming proponents is to point to the melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet. It's widely held up as proof - why, the AGW scientists have measured the melt and concluded that Greenland is melting, and we're going to lose all that ice and we're going to flood.
Of course, a real study of the thickness of the ice sheet shows that it's actually GROWING, an average of 5.4 cm per year. If you only look at the edges, yes they're losing 2 cm per year. Of course, the vast majority of the ice sheet is in the center, and it's GROWING by 6.4 cm per year.
Selective data is oft-used on the pro-AGW side; when a basic flaw in the underlying data is discovered, rather than doing the proper scientific thing - which is to step back, re-examine the data, your process, and your conclusions - the modus operandi seems to be to slander the source, label, attack, and whine.
So I assume we can wait for you to take the ESA to task for their latest measurements showing that Greenland is NOT melting away, since it does not fit the current AGW claims?
Not a denier, just one who's keeping an open mind, looking at the data critically...

Steve Jobs' License Plates
Wow, that's really interesting! And it seems to be true. Here's a picture, and here's a discussion.
Some people claim that it's legal to do so with a special permit. One possible reason for his doing so might be that his license plates get stolen by fanboys as souvenirs if he leaves them on. Another might be that you can't find out where celebrities live if you can't get their license plate numbers. -
Re:Old news! This has been known about for years. Here's a digg posting from over a year ago... The issue here is, why does a "Digg" kind of story makes into YRO section of Slashdot.
People on Slashdot were advocating disabling of executable attachments and not allowing them to be double clicked/run on Outlook Express or any kind of mail client. So, MSN people implemented basically same thing on their (yes, their) network for additional security against click happy people.
Since when sending people .exe, scr files is part of our rights? Even screensaver companies doesn't distribute their files via .scr extension, they pack them into zip files. I bet people actually needing to send a executable to their friends either ZIPs or RARs them already.
Dear Slashdot, stop racing with your "light" version. End this policy please. -

As are BitTorrent.com, TorrentSpy.com, uTorrentFrom: http://libcom.org/forums/news/utorrent-bought-mpa
a Los Angeles - - BitTorrent Founder and CEO Bram Cohen and Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA) Chairman and CEO Dan Glickman announced today that the motion picture industry and BitTorrent, Inc. are collaborating with the goal of inhibiting film piracy. Bram Cohen developed a revolutionary technology for websites to make large content files available on the Web and that technology is often used by others illegally to distribute movies and television shows. Today Cohen confirmed BitTorrent, Inc.'s commitment to removing links that direct users to copies of pirated content owned by MPAA companies from its search engine at BitTorrent.com. The announcement today is historic in that two major forces in the technology and film industries have agreed to work together and proactively identify ways to l and to promote constructive innovation in this area.
And from Bram Cohen, creator of the BitTorrent protocol, and Ludvig (Ludde) Strigeus, the writer of Torrent:Together, we are pleased to announce that BitTorrent, Inc. and Torrent AB have decided to join forces. BitTorrent has acquired Torrent as it recognized the merits of Torrent's exceptionally well-written codebase and robust user community. Bringing together Torrent's efficient implementation and compelling UI with BitTorrent's expertise in networking protocols will significantly benefit the community with what we envision will be the best BitTorrent client.
Note that the above link title is misleading BTW - MPAA haven't "bought" uTorrent. Rather BitTorrent Inc have bough uTorrent and BitTorrent Inc have a commercial relationship with the MPAA.
I recall reading about a link between uTorrent/BT Inc and TorrentSpy too. At minimum, TorrentSpy.com is apparently planning to filter MPAA content soon:

EMI and Sony BMG each have committed to sharply increasing the number of CDs that are protected with technology that limits the number and type of copies that can be made.

So, in total, Sony is an unbelievable amount in the hole. I think its safe to say they're still pariahs here.
To top it off they are braging the Blu Ray format is secure for 10+ years. That's easy to say if nobody bothers to buy it and support it. -
Re:What's the incentive?Oh! and bonus points if it is Linux friendly... I really would like to have XP+Ubuntu on this machine (without having to buy an external CardBus wireless adaptor). Unless you're doing gaming, why not just go with Ubuntu and virtualize Windows? You can even make the Windows apps appear seamlessly on the Linux desktop (ie, not in a desktop window).
VMWare Server and VirtualBox are free. I haven't used VirtualBox so I can't comment on it, but VMWare Server's snapshot feature* alone makes this nicer than running Windows native.
* It's rather crippled compared to the snapshot feature in VMWare Workstation, though. -
Re:How more limited can you get?I just bought a car, a Honda Civic Si. The lights don't automatically turn off when i get out of the car like they did in my 2000 Ford Explorer. What was I thinking buying a car made in 2005 that didn't have the same technology as cars did in the year 2000? Yes! what were you thinking?
Did you depend on it? Was it crucial to you? Was it a factor in your buying decision?
I don't think it was because you bought it anyway. Voice dialing is a useless feature... Just because you don't use it (or know how to use it) doesn't mean it's not a deal breaker for some. I personally could do without blue-tooth in my handhelds, but I can understand if someone is bent out of shape about it missing in a device that I like.
Not shooting for an ad hominem, but you sound a lot like a Mac fanboy.
iPhone (like it or not) is missing a LOT of features that other high end devices (and even some lower end) phones deliver. They have cool new features (multi-touch, visual voice mail, etc.), but there's no excuse for missing basic functionality (that *I* depend on) in a $600 phone.
**Cheap shot warning**
..unless you're one of those people that loves little gadgets that don't really do much You mean a gadget like an iPhone? :P Freaking noob, you just got pwn'd. You seem lost, Digg is this way.
Apple won't miss me buying an iPhone nor will they pay you for the apparent fanboyism, so grow up. -

Re:Different situation north vs south border.
It's offensive enough to a wide enough swath of Americans as to make it a non-starter, particularly after the defeat of the bill today (which contrary to TFA was more because it was hated, by both sides, than because of Real ID).
Furthermore, the number of Americans who support "legalization" varies widely depending on who's conducting the poll and how you word the questions therein; a while back there was a poll that showed that 66% of Americans would "say 'yes' to ordinances that suspend the business licenses of employers who hire illegal aliens, penalize landlords who rent to illegal aliens with fines and make English the official language," (unfortunately the actual article that was linked to on Digg has gone subscription-only). There's a fairly widely quoted Rassmussen poll that claims that "Sixty-nine percent (69%) of voters would favor an approach that focuses exclusively on 'exclusively on [sic] securing the border and reducing illegal immigration.'"
The fact that the percentages drop to around 20-30% when you alter the wording means that there are a lot of people, I think, who don't really know what they think about it, or don't have a very cohesive opinion. (Or they're just inconsistent or feel differently based on the issue; they might come across as pro-immigration in one poll that asks about deportation, but anti-illegal in another that asks about punishing employers.)
I'm not really pushing for any poll over any other -- they all can be manipulated to tell one side of the story or another (and frequently are) -- but the bottom line is that the bill that was finally killed today was a path to legalization, and nobody liked it. It's an issue that's divisive enough that I think Congress will think twice before bringing it up again, and that means that border security needs to move forward without depending on an amnesty plan to win Mexican cooperation with. -

: June Update Continued
Dear Team,
I wanted to reach out to you and share some news. I have decided after a fantastic six years to step down as CEO of Affinity Media. This was not an easy decision for me, because this is an extraordinary company with unlimited potential:
The ZAM Network
Under John Maffei and his team's direction ZAM has the opportunity to be the biggest online game network in the world. I am confident that the team will turn it into a great economic success.
Consumer Auctions and Asset Exchange
Under Paul Kim and his team's direction, I expect us to become serious players here in the U.S. The team has a mission to not only offer a great service but also to make game publishers into our trusted and valued partners.
China Content
Under Rendey Xu and his team's direction Zam China has become one of the biggest online game networks in China. Games TV our partnership with Shanghai Media Group has become a tremendous cable programming network. I anticipate under Rendey's continued leadership that the best days of China content are ahead of us.
Itemmania
Under the leadership of Mr. J. H. Lee Itemmania has become the leading virtual asset exchange business in South Korea. With the closing of our transaction I look forward to even bigger success with J. H. and his team in the future.
I am confident that Bryan Parker and the team will continue to put in place the financial tools, systems and controls that will enable us to effectively manage these global businesses.
I will remain on the Board of Directors as Vice Chairman of the Company with a mandate to assist the Company in its strategic direction. The Board and I have decided that Steve Bannon, shall be appointed immediately as interim CEO. As many of you know, Steve is a former Board member and is very familiar with all of our businesses. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience that will serve the company well. Steve currently is the Chairman of two publicly-traded companies, Genius Products and Points.com. The Board is engaging a leading executive recruiting firm to undertake a systematic search for a CEO as my permanent replacement. We will look both internally and externally to find the best candidate to lead Affinity Media moving forward.
Feel free to contact me if you have questions.
