It has everything to do with scientific argument.
Science is about making new discoveries about the world around us. It is, at a philisophical level about clearly distinguishing between that which we can prove and that which we cannot and then using what we know to find out what we don't.
There are many outlooks which differ from science most noteably the "What we think is what it is" outlook. The idea is that some group has a "complete" answer for everything be it God, Atheism, or little blue people that make the stars move. Any attempt to challenge that is met with immediate attack.
"Intelligent Design" is an attempt to wrapping up the latter in the dress of the former. ID'ers like all creationists believe that some higher power must have made the universe, solar system, earth, and all its inhabitants. These people may fight tooth and nail over exactly who or what that force was (God, Gods, Aliens, Godlike Aliens...) but they are all in agreement that a) the outside being exists, b) it is anthropomorphic and c) that we are special.
ID'ers are attempting to "prove" their baseless assertions by using pseudoscience. They are seeking to pose as scientists while making patently unscientific arguments. Most of these arguments are based fall (in my experience) into two categories. The former are little illogic-games such as "irreducable complexity", or "specific complexity". The latter are "things we don't know" arguments.
Specific complexity doesn't hold up because it is based upon a tautology. Dembski defined strings that have specific complexity as those that cannot be reduced to any other form or explained by any "process" they must simply be copied as-is. This essentially was a notion of information that is specially complex versus information that is not. ID'ers (but not Dembski himself) have then argued variously that humanity, human dna, etc are all irreducably complex and ergo cannot have been reproduced by some mechanical or impersonal process, say evolution.
This falls apart because of the original tautology. Strings are irreducably complex only because they are... irreducably complex by definition. No proof of such complexity exists, and there is no way to show that humans are irreducably complex except by saying so. Therefore this doesn't "prove" anything ID'ers just like to say that by claiming we are irreducably complex they have proven that the godlike whatever made us.
The latter arguments (what the authors are getting at here) fall along the same lines as the former. ID'ers sieze upon something that is unproven or they claim unproven and assert that it cannot be understood (is irreducably complex) and therefore that we will never find it out and therefore that it must have been made by some God(s), Aliens, or Godlike Aliens. The flight of the bumblebee is one of the more classic examples of this. Two others are the lack of "intermediate" fossils between the existing fossils (there will always be this), and the flagella of the paramecium.
To think about how silly this is consider a prehistoric, or even dark ages individual presented with a car, airplane, or an Archimedes Screw. They could easily claim (and many did) that we would "never figure it out" but we have!
What really divides the two outlooks is how they respond to the unknown. Scientists are excited by the unknown and seek to dive headlong into it in order to find it out. Theey do so by admitting what they do and do not know and then attacking the unknown. The latter group fear to find out that they are wrong, and to admit that they do not know things. Therefore they seek to pretend that the unknown is not there.
Given the difference in outlook and the fact that ID'ers seek to pollute science by claiming that they practice it it makes perfect sense that the Scientists involved would love every minute of disproving them. -
Re:If they are doing nothing wrong .....
Unfortunately, your page does not match the argument.
The page serves as a veneration and celebration of logic, but the page has no bearing on the argument.
Since you are presenting this veneration of logic as a counter-argument, you are misleading the discussion.
Yes, if someone MIGHT impinge upon your privacy, then it would be wrong to impinge upon their privacy in an imagined pre-emptive retaliation. Unfortunately, that's not the argument at hand.
The argument here is that they ARE infringing on the complaintant's privacy, thus negating an assumption of your page: that the argument being made is based on a possibility, and not an actuality.
Otherwise, (for example,) your page would be a wonderful counter-argument to self-defence.

Re:Stem cells vs. the aging & the brain
And while it has often been misused by people who try to come up with counter-explanations for any data which doesn't support the desired conclusion, that's frowned upon.
Todd? Nice to meet you.
And I'm calling bullshit.
Coming up with counter-explanations for data that doesn't support the desired conclusion is standard operating procedure for science. It depends on it, and it relies on it, for it's operation.
You're being introduced to a concept called "scientific controversy," and since this is your first time with this concept, may I recommend studying some Bruno Latour.
What happens is that you get a number of competing theories. These competing theories use the facts available, and argue and attack against one another. "Desired outcome" is very much a factor in how things go, and critical to the success of the operations as a whole.
You can have one piece of data, which may on the surface seem to indicate one particular perspective, but that's not a perspective-buster, and nor should it be.
Because if that were the case, then anything that any set of contradictory data (on surface appearance) would forever lock deeper discovery out of the way. Newton would say things fall in proportion to their mass, and some kid would walk by, drop a feather, and Newton would have to forever hold his piece. ...
I've cobbled up what I have through observation and reading papers by psychologists and neurologists. My picture is incomplete because I'm a lay person.
My picture is hopeful, simply as a reflection of who I am. Someone else could take the exact same world-view, (someone who opposes life after 100, say,) and make it turn hopeless.
My hopes guide me to follow up on things that look promising, (and indeed, this has guided science throughout history,) but I work to establish that it doesn't contradict science. And now here's my challenge to you: If you have, in fact, some data that appears to refute my view, and you have compelling answers to show that my reasoning about the data is bogus, I'm all ears to it.
What I understand, from my reading of journals and magazines and talking with my friends in these fields, is that my worldview is plausible, and that people don't really understand yet the real answer. Do me a favor, and show me wrong.
Your response doesn't have to be perfect. Perfect is impossible. It just needs to be convincingly plausible. You may want to look up "defeasible reasoning," as well. -
Re:Excel?!
Who said it was a "scientific article?" Take up concerns over phrasing with Drexel Assoc. Prof. B. D. McCullough. But please point out places where he defended Gnumeric's mistakes. In most cases, he noted Gnumeric fixed an error & MS Excel didn't. This isn't saying the Gnumeric errors were good. But that it is good they were fixed.
Indeed, he criticizes Gnumeric: "On this basis alone, the RNG (random number generator) in Gnumeric can be judged as unacceptable for statistical purposes." -

This is college we're talking about. For those who read the article, the discussion was undergraduate engineering courses. It is significantly different from teaching middle school or high school, to which your comments might apply.
1. Pay teachers very well so they are in say the top 5% of all wage earners. This will attract the highly skilled and educated back into teaching.
Universities don't work like that. Money == Grants. Money != Students. There is little incentive for tenured professors to teach students, as it takes time away from they can write grant proposals, to get multimillion dollar grants. Think about it -- if you have someone doing consulting, they might make $200/hr. Is a college going to pay anywhere near that scale, and not charge rates where students are in debt for the rest of their life?2. Send teachers to school during school holidays to further their own knowledge. Pay them for this. This ensures teachers are constantly updating their knowledge instead of driving taxi's during the school breaks.
College teachers sure as hell aren't driving taxis. They're writing grant proposals if they're tenured, or they're doing their other job (which may be that $200+/hr consulting, if they're an adjunct).3. Don't let your local community decide what should be taught in schools. Curriculum should be decided by a national panel made up of leaders in each field of study. Education should be a national issue, not one decided based on local beliefs no matter how "intelligent" those beliefs are.
They don't decide. ABET certifies engineering curriculum. (I'd personally like to see a way for students to file grievences to ABET, but I doubt that will ever happen). Colleges in general are certified by large regions. In the case of where I live, it's handled by Middle States4. Provide options for traineeships in traditional trades (e.g. electrical, plumbing etc) for the non-academic students. This will help remove disruptive elements from classes allowing those who want to study or have the aptitude to study to do so in peace. (not that you don't need to study to become a plumber and such, but I'm sure you all know what I mean)
Schools don't get to set their curriculum however they want ... they have to get approved by Middle States or the like. There are some universities that focus on internships in engineering. Drexel and U of L come to mind.5. Properly fund the schools and get rid of the Coke/Chip machines. I know the sugary drinks and food taste great, but they don't help you sit still and concentrate. (A new slogan perhaps?
Universities have money. At least enough for the amount of waste I've seen. :)6. Ban the teaching of religion on any and all school grounds. AND ENFORCE IT!!! Religion has it's place in society, but not in schools!
Again -- that should only apply to public middle school/high schools. It has nothing to do with universities, where you can elect which classes you're taking. (even state schools might have a Jewish Studies program or the like. And let's not forget schools like CUA or BYU.
Oh -- and for the record, I'm currently in graduate school at a public university, and I got my undergrad from a private university (or more accurately, a real estate company who was obligated to teach classes), where I also worked for 7 years, and saw an amazing amount of graft. (and before someone claims this is libel, the fed agreed) -

Computer Science vs Software Engineering
This is why I am studying "Software Engineering", not "Computer Science".
Dispite already having 3+ years professional software development, I am a student at Drexel University. Computer Science, which was my original major, is the traditional university scientific approach, but Software Engineering focuses on more real world application development stuff.
You can find the software engineering recommended plan of study at Drexel here:

More universities should make this distinction. -

Big Toys for Big BoysArchimedes claimed: "Give me a place to stand and with a lever I will move the whole world."
He developed the claim into The Claw, which must have been a wonder to see in action. I've never been able to find out if the Roman soldier who killed him was punished or had anything to say. Archimedes was an engineer who applied the principles of Euclidean geometry.

Re:Lighthouses are not free.cowboy76Spain writes: ) I do not understand how people can be so cinnic. They do believe municipal WiFi is free?
This is a very old debate, from at least 1789 in the U.S. The question in those days was whether the federal government was justified in spending money on free light signals for shipping. The construction of a lighthouse, the staffing, maintenance and supplies (whale oil initially, electricity later) was quite expensive. Did the citizens imagine that the costs would not be recovered from them in some other way...
The subject of the debate is traditionally called "universal goods", and was discussed by John Stuart Mill in the 1844 "Essays on Some Unsettled Questions of Political Economy". There's a relevant quote from Book 5 Chapter 11 at http://william-king.www.drexel.edu/top/eco/excerp
t s/Mill.htmlIf you'd like to skip to the end of the debate, the common resolution is for the local community to pay for the "natural monopoly" component (in this case, the antenna farm) and allow any business to use the service provided to offer values-added services to customers. Any similarity to legal regiemes where one needs both an ISP and a cable provider is not accidental (:-))

I probably should have mentioned --
My grandfather is Carl Pacifico, and after being a chemical engineer, moved to management, and then, after selling his company, became a business consultant. (which is when he was doing handwriting analysis).
He started studying human behavior, and from that, thinking in general, and now spends his time trying to further research into cognative neuropsychology.
He's not some Miss Clio wanna-be trying to hawk his wares. I don't even know if he's done much with his handwriting analysis work in years, if not decades.
From the times that I've tried analysing other people's (and my own) handwriting, it seems to compare well with what I knew of the people, but I haven't tried doing double blind studies or anything else that would provide statistical proof as to the accuracy of the studies. -

Re:Not only Google looks for big brains
There's a whole class of "people don't act this way and things don't work this way in the real world" arguments one could make about this problem and its solution as given. Such criticisms are valid and relevant, but for the sake of argument, set aside how things work in practice and examine the problem and solution strictly in terms of theory. As ludicrous as the concept seems, let's say that the pirates do agree to abide by the rules that they have set.
First off, there needs to be a clarification of the condition "assume they are very intelligent and extremely greedy (and that they would prefer not to die)." It must be explicitly stated that intelligence, greed, and self-preservation are the ONLY operative factors in the decision making process of the pirates. No other factors such as spite, "sour grapes", pride, bloodthirstiness or schadenfreude can hold sway. Otherwise, pirates 3 and 1 might very well decide that seeing pirate 5 killed is worth more to them than one lousy gold piece.
Also, the operative domain of "greed" needs to be restricted to the current situation only. Otherwise, pirates 3 and 1 might sacrifice their gold piece in the interest of furthering their gains in the long-term, their rationale being that other pirates will learn that they cannot be assuaged with a pittance.
If these limitations are imposed, then I'd say that the solution is absolutely valid. Pirates 3 and 1 can hem and haw all that they want, and even threaten to cause pirate 5's death by voting against him if they don't get bigger shares, but when it comes down to it, pirate 5 will propose a division of (99, 0, 1, 0, 1), a vote is going to be taken, and under the conditions given, pirate 1 and pirate 3 are going to have to vote yea in order to ensure that they get the most gold possible, even if that's only one GP. IANA game theorist, but it seems to me that the Nash Equilirbium of this game says that the given solution has gotta be so. -

Re:Your information isn't-The "ME" Generation.
"When the 21-year old John Nash wrote his 27-page dissertation outlining his "Nash Equilibrium" for strategic non-cooperative games, the impact was enormous. On the formal side, his existence proof was one of the first applications of Kakutani's fixed-point theorem later employed with so much gusto by Neo-Walrasians everywhere; on the conceptual side, he spawned much of the literature on non-cooperative game theory which has since grown at a prodigious rate - threatening, some claim, to overwhelm much of economics itself." here and
"The concept we need is called the Nash Equilibrium, after Nobel Laureate (in economics) and mathematician John Nash. Nash, a student of Tucker's, contributed several key concepts to game theory around 1950. The Nash Equilibrium conception was one of these, and is probably the most widely used "solution concept" in game theory." here

Re:Power
Its interesting about the head aches - WiFi is currently operating over 2.4Ghz (the resonant frequency of water, which is a signifcant component of humans).
More pseudo-science/urban legend BS non-facts. 2.4 GHz is NOT the resonant frequency of water. Here's a link explaining why microwave ovens use ~2.4GHz, Microwave Oven Principles of Operation, which is where this so called 2.4GHz resonace seems to originate from. And here's a quote from that page for those too lazy to click the link and read.
What is significant about 2.45 GHz? Not that much. Water molecules are not resonant at this frequency. A wide range of frequencies will work to heat water efficiently. 2.45 GHz was probably chosen for a number of other reasons including not interfering with existing EM spectrum assignments and convenience in implementation. In addition, the wavelength (about 5 inches) results in reasonable penetration of the microwave energy into the food. The 3 dB (half power) point is about 1 inch for liquid water - half the power is absorbed in the outer 1 inch of depth, another 1/4 of the power in the next inch, and so forth.
Industrial ovens still often operate at 915 MHz and other frequencies near 6 GHz are also used.
Water has numerous resonances over the entire spectra range, but the lowest frequency resonance is the rotational resonance is around 24 GHz. Other resonances occur in the millimeter wave range through the infrared. -
Re:Class IIIa lasers don't cause permanent injury
The problem is your super cheapo $3 pointer you bought in the walmart checkout line was probably manufactured in a Shenzhen sweatshop somewhere, where only every 1,000th unit off the (if that even...?) line is tested to comply with the 5mW CDRH limit. Do you trust the pointer you have not to be emitting 7 or 3 or 10mW? I definitely don't. The red GaAlAsP(I think...) semiconducor red laser pointers I suspect are fairly consistent in output power due to the simplicity of the electronics that power them. I'm much more afraid of the now common green DPSS frequency doubling laser pointers, the output coupler on the end of the pointer is designed to block the IR pumping energy from the ~800nm semiconductor laser in the rear of the pointer which can be emitting hundreds of mW of power. If the window is designed poorly or fials somehow you can have a very dangerous device on your hands.

Re:For a LIMITED TIME only
Apple manages to deal with developers on a 1:1 basis without their costs skyrocketing.
Ok, I'm going to have to go on a tangent for a minute and ask, "What the hell are you talking about?" Apple is not a bottleneck for developers. They provide an OS and tools, and the developers find their own pipeline. If Apple treated every developer as a consulting company producing software directly for Apple, then their costs would definitely skyrocket!
Also, I thought you were talking about automating the relationship management. Not the importing of albums and songs.
I am talking about business relationships. Someone has to work out the details of how those songs will get delivered to Apple, on what timeframe they have to be delivered, and if Apple has the facilities to support their methodology.
I'm sure they're using "lots of automation" there now
I'm sure they do. That doesn't prevent Apple from having to review and organize the materials and data being delivered. I have several "automated feeds" that I currently manage at my company. I'd dread the idea of having to manage thousands of those feeds.
Basically, what I'm referring to is the law of diminishing returns. If Apple adds a large number of low profit relationships to their platform, they're going to see less and less return, and hidden costs will creep in. Here's the modern variant of the law that pertains to this situation. -

Re:How insightful
WARNING: The Singularity Is Closer Than It Appears
I've always had a pet peve with the 'singularity' theory. It assumes that the law of accelerating returns contintues until a system crashes to zero from resource saturation. Unfortunately, like Moore's law and other 'laws' in pop science, they are just observations.
An important and overlooked observation about evolutionary systems is that they follow the accelerating returns curve until they saturate the use of the available resources. By then the law of diminishing returns is dominating the population.
There is no crash. There is no sigularity. The population will adjust itself, even if that means through attrition. Once new resources or more effiecient methods of utilization are brought into play, the acceleration will continute.

> Aren't Christians saved by believing in Jesus?
In Ephesian 2:4-5, the Bible says "But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ". So Christians are saved because God draws them, not because they're chasing down God trying to find them. Rather, we tend to run away from God and avoid him as much as possible. That's why sometimes folks refer to the Hound of Heaven.
Here's a question for you, though - why should God save any of us? Babies/adults/whatever? What claim do we have over God that he should care for us? -

Universities' goal is to cover their ass
One source of ulcers for school administrators is the threat of being sued by the **AA or a major software vendor. That liability towers over bandwidth costs. If a university were to engage in some kind of contract with a company to fill student computer entertainment demands in a legal manner, the unversity would be somewhat legally shielded as they have appeared to have made a good faith attempt to curb piracy. Even if students start figuring out proxying methods to still get their P2P through the school's gateway, a DA would be less inclined to whipe out their endowment.Drexel Univserity, for example, made a deal with Microsoft years back to let them hand out CDs to students packed with often-pirated software. This was not to save money on bandwidth from inevitable piracy, it was not a decision influenced by ethics; rather it was purely a cover-your-ass legal rhetorical maneuver because they did not want to get sued one day. An investment at a bargain price.
And what's with the title of this article anyway, talking about a company's non-disclosing pursuits, when the jist of the article addresses whether or not this should be an opt-in or general budget thing? Would anyone complain if their university comped everyone free HBO during this last Sopranos season? I doubt it, because this internet piracy thing is the incendiary hot button water-cooler thing whereas everybody knows HBO is a Good Thing (and that it is not TV).

They should install BSD!
Is it any wonder people think Linux users are a bunch of flaming homosexuals when its fronted by obviously gay losers like these?! BSD has a mascot who leaves us in no doubt that this is the OS for real men! If Linux had more hot chicks and gorgeous babes then maybe it would be able to compete with BSD! Hell this girl should be a model!
Linux is a joke as long as it continues to lack sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. I mean are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?! Wouldn't this just make your Christmas?! Yes doctor, this uber babe definitely gets my pulse racing! Oh how I envy the lucky girl in this shot! Linux has nothing that can possibly compete. Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Wouldn't this be more liklely to influence your choice of OS?
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Don't you wish you could get one of these? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!
