Re:In case you are concerned about getting caught.
You can also go through good ole Usenet which has faster speeds than peer to peer like EasyNews. Happy torrenting!
Came here to say this, but then I remembered the first rule of Usenet...
-
In case you are concerned about getting caught...
Access torrents via a client that supports proxying like Vuze. Then simply invest in a proxy service like BTGuard and have your IP cloaked through a non-US location (How else ya gonna get Game of Thrones?).
You can also go through good ole Usenet which has faster speeds than peer to peer like EasyNews. Happy torrenting! -
That's Interesting...
My 1+ year subscription to EasyNews would indicate otherwise...
-
Premature
The obit is premature. Usually when a service "dies" it would mean it's no longer available, but anyone can still buy usenet access here, here, here, here, here, here, here, or here.
And that is by no means a complete list. If anything, usenet may actually return to a more usable medium again, now that it won't be free for all the spammers and trolls anymore. Then again, it may well not -- it's not like all the illegal traders will just give up and go away, so I guess it depends on how much money the **IA, the BSA, and the morality police want to spend on "eradicating the problem". -

Re:It keeps being said
People won't bother to steal if there's a quality, low-cost solution they could just pay for.
Need not look any farther than the success Apple has found doing just that. Granted they're making their money off the sale of ipods, but people are only too happy to buy what's being offered.
For example- I pay $15/month to subscribe to Yahoo Music with my MP3 player, because it's just easier than stealing. The catch? I don't even keep my music if I stop paying. But I don't care! I'm paying for convenience.
Agreed. In my case, I pay only $9.95 per month. Admittedly, it's a different approach (cron jobs and scripting) with different benefits (wider and more varied offerings), but the "I don't care" sentiment and convenience factors are similar enough.
Seriously, though, the number of people downloading "content" without paying for it is staggering. Probably just as staggering as the number of people who wouldn't pay for it in any case. -
Re:Stranger than Fiction
Usenet?
Heck, these guys have a search engine that automatically unrars files, and lets you download almost any file over straight HTTP. I typically pull 1MByte/sec or higher. -
Re:WHY?!
Huh? Try 10$/mo at Easynews and alt.binaries.erotica.divx or cheggit.net (120k+ members) or any one of a ton of other places, any one of which will give you more porn than you could possibly have time to watch. They're so busy posting the constant stream of new dvds released there's hardly ever time for reposts.
Yup, can vouch for Easynews after using it for the past 7-8 years. The (still-hidden for some reason) Easynews global search is pretty amazing - just enter your keywords, filter it on movies and select output style as 'Hybrid 1'. Bob's your mother's brother. Even supports regex! :-) Automatically assembles the contents of some RAR files too, try including 'autounrar' in your search term, or the PAR viewer for files that aren't automatically assembled. Also like the SSL option for downloading stuff from work (disclaimer: no, I don't work for them, just a very satisfied customer).
It's also worth signing up to the Ijsklontje forums if you have a decent binary newsfeed, just to see what's on there at the moment. -
Re:Young whippersnappers!!!
When I don't have access to a public news server, I use Easynews.com. There is a nominal charge to use it, (I think $10 a month for 20 gig through HTTP, 40 gig through NNTP), but the nice thing about the HTTP is they combine binaries on their servers, so you can download completed files vs downloading 1000 binaries and combining them yourself. They are based out of Phoenix, AZ, and max my cable bandwidth on downloading.
I have used Newsparrot to find public open servers before, seems to work well. -
Re:Shhhhhhhhh
Who needs a client?
-Jar. -
Re:Netflix too slow
Agreed, VOD rocks, but how would Netflix deliver the content? Cable companies (Comcast in my area) that are doing VOD own the infrastructure. I just don't see how Netflix could compete with them.
Copyright concerns aside, have you considered an Easynews membership?

Use NNTP Please
I hope most Slashdot readers are using NNTP by now (not NTP) to use their music, movies, software, pr0n, etc. etc.
You will help out your ISP by only using downstream bandwidth. You can also usually max-out your connection speed. A CD can take only 15-20 minutes to download.
Further, your troubles with the RIAA/MPAA/Homeland Security are likely to be limited to when you, say, post on a heavily visited site about your activity but forget to post anonymously.
For the best binary newsreader (to download files) from USENET, I reccomend Power Grab -- small, fast, free, and doesn't fiddle around with your registry.
You will probably need to subscribe to a USENET service as well; I reccomend easynews or if you plan to download more than 20 GB per month than Giganews. -
Re:Who does actually host the alt.binary.* groups?DOH!
Screwed up the links somehow. Giganews, EasyNews, Newsfeeds.com.

Easynews Global Search
http://members.easynews.com/global4/ for the win.
-
ooooor Usenet
And then there is the completely ignored realm of Usenet. Newsgroups carry most popular (or cult popularity) shows. Really popular shows like Lost are usually ripped from HDTV sources and encoded to DIVX or XVID at a high bit rate (say 700MB for a 40 minute show).
Now content is dependant on your ISP's retention, but downloads are usually extremely fast. Alternately you can use a pay Usenet service like EasyNews or Giganews which have crazy retention periods.
How do you know what's up there and which group to access to find it? The handy dandy site newzBin is a searchable index of binary files available on Usenet.
I have Tivo and use it for a lot of stuff, but I started just grabbing HDTV rips of Battlestar Galactica off Usenet because the quality was so good. -
Re:P2P not living up to hype
Check out: EasyNews.com.
For $10 a month (10 gigs worth of downloads, which rolls over if unused) I can grab just about anything that's been uploaded within the last 30-40 days on any of the binary newsgroups.
They've got an experimental global search: http://members.easynews.com/global4/search.html (once you sign up)
Their web service even automatically decodes RARs, so multi-part, hour-long sci-fi shows, etc., can usually be downloaded with one click. -
P2P, wuzzat?
Man, with easynews I have practically quit using P2P for ANYTHING.
Anything I want is on their fast server.. and with their global search that takes like ~2 seconds, zip manager, and autounrar (useful for streaming tv shows, movies, xvids et cetera) i can't ever see using p2p again :P
But then again, it isn't 'free', but the $10 a month is well worth it in my eyes -
Re:PureGig
Actually, I think PureGig is hosted at Easynews, not the other way around- PG only recently opened itself to the public. Hell, their job oppotunities are the same:

Easynews needs a HUGE pipe, being MUCH larger than any other news server. -
Here's the link

You already need to have an Easynews account. 15 days = 1 gig. -
Too see how it works...

Re:Lock your dorm door = number 1 rule.
Just remember... as far as number 7 (mp3/warez) go, your school probably has a news server that probably has the binaries groups (if not Easynews is your buddy). Stay away from P2P (youll get the HIV if your not carefull). News Groups are your best friends. All the music / pr0n / warez you can ever want and there is nobody thats going to fuck with you about it.
Ive often wondered why nobody goes after the news groups. I mean its a bullitn board that has anything you would ever want on it. I guess most of the **AA folks are too stupid to figure it out. Whatever, at least I get my stuff.
Also, laptops are the best idea ever in class. I'm gonna assume your school is all wireless. This means you can cross reference what the professor is talking about with info on the interenet (no... not javascript tetris). Wikipedia can be invaluable in class. Well thats all the sagly advise I can muster at this early hour. Hope school goes better for you than it did for me :P -
Retiring? How come no one told me?
The first thing I thought of was "Damn, he's already retiring? How come no one told me? Are we gonna have a meeting in the morning?"
Long time EasyNews subscribers will know who I'm referring to. -
Re:She has a case
...something that would generate a map of which law goes against which one.... etc.
Will this do? -
UsenetNot to sound pretentious but most of the music I listen too isn't readily found on P2P apps. Instead I get it from Usenet. (Easynews.com offers 30 days worth of newsgroups access including binaries for $10/month and has definitely been worth it.)
The only downside is that you can only download what other people have posted. But if you ask nicely someone will usually upload whatever obscure album I'm looking for after a couple of days. In a way, its like a IRC trading with REALLY REALLY bad lag. :) -

Re:missin the point.
the reason you donate cycles to seti/columb rulers/cancer research/whatever is you love science and the progress of humanity.
No. The reason I donate cycles is so that I can get free credits on easynews.com and download more pr0n.
How much CPU cycles are wasted on Pr0n, and how does this help society?
Doing it my way? All of them. And thanks to easynews, my pr0n DOES help society. -
Re:Earthstation 5 is a GODSEND

I pay ten bucks a month...For a service that allows me to preview just about anything from just about anywhere. If it's not available right now odds are very great that within six months it will be. I can then audition as many tracks from the album as I like, keep all I want, and the quality is almost always at least 192kbps MP3. And if I really like something I can request a lossless version, and usually have it available for download within a matter of hours.
I like the Spanish and Russian stuff the best, although I have discovered I also have a taste for Turkish hiphop and Egyptian techno.
You can get a taste of what's available right here....

Easynews privacy policy...
How did the FBI get the ip address of the computer that uploaded the virus when the privacy policy for easynews specifically states that is should be impossible for such a thing to happen:
We do not keep HTTP access logs
We do not keep NNTP access logs
We do not use IP addresses to link to personally identifiable information. IP addresses are used for administrative purposes only to ensure the Web site is running smoothly.
Here's a link to the complete policy: Privacy Policy -
Virus author's other post
Although google doesnt archive those groups, they did archive this message posted by the virus author in alt.alt.test 9 minutes before the virus was posted elsewhere.
(You can compare to the message included here from easynews) -
Re:Seriously though....
That's why you use a provider that doesn't keep logs.

Sample Usenet valuesI think the intention of the original poster's question was related to bandwidth used rather than absolute content size. I'm not surprised by the 1.5% quoted in the article. However, the 1.5% figure offers no insight into the popularity of porn sites vs. other content.
While I don't have actual values for the Web (which would be hard to get), here are some statistics from an ISP that runs a newsgroup server. It's a bit skewed because they don't carry the high bandwidth stuff like movies, warez, or even mp3s, but it's worth a shot.
Of course, the major Usenet providers, like EasyNews, Giganews, and RemarQ would never publish these statistics, because they would expose themselves for what they are, and why people pay for them. It certainly isn't for the text files or the discussion, that's for sure.

Re:another similar program
And the best thing with UD is: You get 1gig worth of Data from EasyNews for every 15 CPU Days!
:) -
Re:You think that's bad?
If they didn't add the IP address, it'd be too easy to abuse their server and spam through it. Who says Usenet should be anonymous anyway?
If you do want almost anonymous access, sign up with a pay-for news provider such as EasyNews. They don't add an IP address to messages posted through their system, so it's effectively anonymous. However, they still add a special encoded header line that lets them determine which user account sent the message, but it's only of internal use to them, and someone would probably require a court order to force them to identify the poster.
It's been a long time since anything on the Internet has been truly anonymous... -
