Sorry, No!
Bloated code, shared JVM... this isn't a JSP or Java problem, it's yours, d'oh! JSP scales very nicely, and unlike Perl or PHP, you have lots of control over scheduling, load balancing, distributedness, etc.
If you thought you could just mosey on over to JSP and employ your existing Perl/PHP skillset? Sorry, no! Unlike weakly object-oriented / typed languages such as Perl/PHP, Java requires that you know what you're doing.
Approaching a rich API such as Java through JSP, from a Perl/PHP orientation, is a recipe for disaster. It would be like going to perform knee surgery on a patient after having been a bikini waxer.
That said, to whoever's working the backend of your JSP website, they probably need to get a clue about tag libraries, JSTL, Struts etc. Go find a good book on those subjects, for example
Java for the Web With Servlets, Jsp, and Ejb : A Developer's Guide to Scalable Solutions by Kurniawan. -
Re:I tried an MMORPG...
It's worth noting also, in keeping with the main thrust of this article, is that SWG has its own severe economy issues.
Duping resources (particularly credits) has become an almost overnight cancer. Whereas until recently the methods for duping was known only by a select few, now they are widely known (and even posted on Ebay). There are people running around in the game with upwards of 200 million credits, some have 500-900 million spread stashed away. And if its not being stashed, its being sold everywhere on Ebay.
To give some kind of context - a large *house* is typically sold in game for around 75,000 - 150,000 credits. Right now, since the loot system is entirely different to EQ and suchlike (i.e. there is no "uber" loot - the game is engineered in such a way that player-crafted items are always better than any looted item) - a large house is about the most money you could spend on a single item.
The sad fact is, whichever way you look at it, with an economy so skewed by artificial duped wealth when the developers come to think about suitable prices for starships in the upcoming Space expansion pack, they're going to see a completely disjointed wealth median, and price ships accordingly.
(You think I'm overexaggerating? They [the Devs] expressed concern recently that an overwhelming majority of the players were pistol users. Guess what weapon you start with when you create a character.. yup, a pistol. Hardly a leap of faith to assume that this is what most people would naturally start to level up in) -
Re:Not customers
This X1 on Ebay is starting out at $300. Might be about as cheap as you find. It's not a bad machine; it'd be worth up to $500, probably.
I do like Sun hardware, and Solaris is a good OS. I'm just disappointed with Sun's exploitation of the FOSS community, with the arrogant attitude. -
Packard Bell Model 5130
This keyboard rocks. I got it from an old PB 486 system. It's small and compact, no Windows keys, and is just plain nice to type on. It fits very well on my desk too (due to the small compactness.)
It's also easy to disassemble and reassemble for cleaning. I've taken it apart a few times to give it a good scrubbing in the sink.
Woo, just looked it up on google, looks like you can still buy these things for $8 or $9. Pretty sweet. It seems the newer versions of the 5130 have the Windows keys :/
Here's a picture on ebay. Doesn't mention the model number, but it sure looks the same.

Check eBay
Just check ebay for the IBM model-M keyboards. Or, here's a link to my search. Looks like you can do a "buy it now" option on one of the things for about $15. Cheaper than you can buy a good keyboard new, and given the discussion going on here, it's probably one of the best keyboards to have, if the loud clickiness won't bother people.

Looks like you can pick up a Primestar dish on eBay for about 50 bucks (current auctions here). Shipping looks to be about $20. Anybody know of other sources for acquiring these dishes?

Re:Well, they don't want to hurt current sales...
Your right, I don't know who was inspired by who but the Cadillac Deville DTS and Benz S class are remarkably similar, and the Lexus GS series (I don't know if Toyota has a similar model under a diffent name in Japan like the Soarer SC branding) look a lot like the Benz CLKs. In the first pair, the S Class appears to have been first with a redesign in the mid 90s, vs. late 90s for the DTS, but the CLK and GS both came out with a new model in 98. They aren't design rips but they do share some styling cues, and I know the first DTS I saw I was wondering which model Benz it was. The Toyota and CLK simlarities are probably just a similar sense of style, both good IMHO, since there really wasn't time for either company to get a process running on a new design that quickly. Of course the new Cadillacs are quite innovative and I really don't think that there is much of anything that looks quite like they do. Competely off the point, what I really wish is that Toyota had put a manual in the V8 Soarer and shipped it over here, or shipped the twin turbo version over. I guess I should have said newer rather than older, and you are quite correct in you assesment of my knoledge of Toyota's JDM lines, it is sorely lacking.

My current three favorite keyboards
You have the old "IBM" camp of keyboard lovers. They like the "clicky" keyboards. I was one of those for a long long time.
You have the "Keytronics" fans. I've also been a big fan of the high end keytronics keyboards. But my tastes have changed.
I feel in love with the Dell Quietkey keyboards a while ago. They don't seem to last very long, but I love how quiet they are and how the keys feel. The bright side is I'm ordering a lot of Dell PowerEdge machines for clients, so I have a ton of surplus black quietkey keyboards.
Example
My other favorite keyboard right now is the IBM KB-9910. It has a warrantee for something like 10 million keypresses per key. I know I've had it forever, abuse the hell out of it, and gone through 3 quietkeys on my other machine in the time I've had it. That and it just looks so damn cool. It has better tactile response than the Quietkey, but it's not as quiet. You can probably still find these for around 30-35 bucks.
Example
My last favorite keyboard is the only one I'll use in a server room. The BTC 5100c mini in black. These things are awesome. They are built tough, look nice, and feel great. I probably type faster on these than anything else. In fact, I've seriously been considering getting one for my workstation if my 9910 ever dies.
I always get black keyboards because it takes them longer to start looking grungy.
Hope this help! -
Re:Get into amateur radio yourself - here's how ..
I would like to point out that getting the gear needn't be expensive.
Even cheaper: buy a used radio on EBay, or visit a local ham store or ham swap meet. The gear you find may not be the latest and fanciest, but there is a lot of good, serviceable gear out there. My 2m handheld is a Radio Shack HTX-202 - big (by modern standards), heavy (ditto) and ugly (in the eye of the beholder...
:-), but it's built like a tank and it works very well.Unlike other radio services, we hams can build our own radios. Hardly anybody does anymore. Sad.

eBay item 2746828346.
Sure, the bidding ended, but you can make one yourself very easily. -
Omnikey
Somebody's selling a brand new Omnikey Ultra on eBay.
Grab one of these, you'll type faster and more accurately. And your neighbors will know every time you press a key.
I might have to find one for myself...I seriously dropped my old Ultra the other day, and I'm having trouble with the up arrow and zero keys. Hope I didn't crack a trace. -
Re:Allow me to amend!!
If you want to see something truly revolting, though, look at how this sleaze outfit is rebranding and selling OpenOffice.org on eBay.

Re:G4 still kickin'
Yup. I've been keeping an eye out for a twin of my dual G4 450 and they're still at least $600 or so. Not bad for a three-year-old box.

Re:Marketing execs: LISTEN UP
but what if the marketers are using the following keyboard they bought on eBay?
IBM PS/2 Keyboard -- All X keys
This is an IBM PS/2 Keyboard with model number KB-7953. This keyboard has been modified over an entire summer so that every square shaped key has been replaced with an 'X' key.
Every character key, almost all the keys on the numpad, the cursors, all of the function keys, and all of the numeric have been replaced. Only the tab, caps-lock, left and right shift, ctrl and alt, windows, return, and backspace keys remain. These keys remain only because they aren't the same size as the 'X' key. All in all, there are 86 keys replaced.
History:
This keyboard is unique! To make a keyboard similar to it you would need 86 keyboards, just as I did.
I work with a company that recycles used computer equipment. We resell computers, laptops, monitors, and some other parts, but smaller things such as mice and keyboards we usually throw away. Over the course of this past summer, I've kept my eye out for keyboards similar to this one. Slowly but surely, I'd pry the 'X' key off one keyboard after another. Eventually, this was created.
To make the keyboard even more unusual, to replace the actual 'X' key originally on the keyboard I used an 'X' key from a black IBM keyboard of the same size.
It should be noted that the keys on this come from many used keyboards, and as such some are a bit dirty. There are two keys that occasionally stick (where the '4' and '+' normally would be). The keyboard is in good and working condition, but is being sold as-is, with no expressed or implied warranty. You can, by all means, still use this keyboard to type. Only they keys have been replaced.
You could be the hit of a LAN party!
I'm hoping there is someone out there in Internet land that finds this as amusing as I do. It's a friggin' keyboard with lots of 'X' keys! What's not to love? Hell, I might just keep it for myself. Ah, man, this keyboard makes me laugh just looking at it. But by all means -- don't just look, bid! You could very well own it.

Re:It's not the standards, people
If your budget doesn't allow, check on eBay for a used G4 system (an eMac, for instance) and grab it instead.
Right, and at a minimum you can get an OSX-capable iMac for $150 on ebay. So, with an OSX license and RAM you can be testing on a real mac for $300. -

Re:Poor? Oh really?
Keep in mind that what we consider "poor" has changed over the years. In 1950, half of the households in the US did not have indoor plumbing. Today, even many of the poorest in the US have refrigerators, indoor plumbing, at least one television, a microwave oven, and increasingly, a computer (though often used).
Looking at Ebay, I see a Compaq Deskpro Pentium II/P2 350MHz 6.4GB which is fine for Net surfing and playing simple games. The price: $35.
Compared with rent of $500-$1000 per month in US urban areas, computers are no longer a "luxury," even for people living near the poverty line. -
an iTune did sell on eBay yesterday
An iTunes (AAC) version of Bittersweet Sypmhony by the Verve sold on eBay yesterday for $3.75. It will be interesting to see how the buyer, seller, and Apple handle the sale. Unfortunately, it may be difficult to observe their actions.

Re:Headless iMacsWhy can't Apple make a less expensive headless box?
They did this with the Cube, but it didn't catch fire like the original iMacs did so I doubt they'll be trying that again.
Not exactly true. The G4 Cube was monitor-less, but it was far from cheap. It cost just below a PowerMac with the same peformance, but with very limited expantion slots.
The cool thing with the cube was that it was almost completely silent (no fans what so ever!). Only a 5400rpm disk.
Another interesting thing with the cube is that it's second hand value is still very high, often around 500 to 900 dollars (ebay), even though the model is old. That's about half its retail price as new... -

Re:awkward, but...
followup: this device is supposed to be fully bit-accurate. for the longest itme, it was wicked expensive (abvout $500). but at $200, its much more affordable.
(ob. disc: no, I'm not that seller nor am I connected with him.)
I've heard reports that you can stack 2 of them and get 4 channel recording, all digital. but there are sync issues that you later have to resolve (there is no common timing between a pair of cards like this. fyi). -
No "speculation" needed

Yet another iTunes Auction...
Seems like soneone saw the first auction and posted another iTunes auction. the experiment continues.
eBay item=2555862144 -
Re:Not reallywell, this link shows that eBay has a lot of electronically-distributale items up for bidding, so eBay obviously allows it, otherwise these guys wouldn't waste their time making hundreds of auctions for things that eBay doesn't allow. And, from what I read originally, eBay has had that clause for a long time, to fight off illegal mp3 dealing.
As I said, they enforce that rule when it helps them, and lets it slide when it doesn't.
-
Not reallyIf eBay allows it, then why do I find this:
eBay prohibits the listing of items or products to be delivered electronically through the Internet.
on their Downloadable Media Policy page?
Or was that secretly added after this song was listed? -
eBay pulls the auction off the siteAt some point today, eBay pulled the auction off of the site. Does anyone have any information as to why? The guy who posted the auction doesn't have any update on his site yet.
I wonder whether eBay was pressured, or ???

Re:Uhoh....

Re:Jogging
You forgot the geek favorite: The Frontier Labs Nex II series! And the new Nex IA features an FM tuner (although it also features a really stupidly placed headphone cord that comes out the bottom).
I paired my Nex II with the armband case from Tune Belt and I have the perfect jogging/gym solution. Got my Tune Belt case at PlanetMiniDisc.com and my Nex II from Choke Slam Media on eBay, where they always have TONS of various Nex models for sale. In general there's a great market out there for mp3 armband cases (I only know of two: Tune Belt's, and a crappier (less comfortable, IMO) one from Case Logic) and full-featured CF mp3 players. Really, really overlooked markets.
My only gripe about the Nex series is NO PLAY LISTS! Geez. I hate reshuffling around my jogging/biking/driving tunes into different folders depending on my mood. Cheap CF player (that doubles as a flash drive), great sound with custom 5-band EQ, and now with FM tuning...m3u playlists would make it perfect. -

I guess its because of that (scroll down). Though the reasons stated are funny, considering the original price...

Different delivery
I would change the delivery system to ship a CD with the information needed to download the song or something like that. eBay policy forbids what he is doint as pointed out in another post here. Other then the delivery method I don't see how this is different. He is essentially transfering his legal right to hear a song via iTunes.
You can buy this song in many other formats like these so why not an iTunes song? -
Auction's prohibited by Ebay rulestheir lame policy reads as follows:
Downloadable Media Policy
eBay prohibits the listing of items or products to be delivered electronically through the Internet.
Examples
Here are examples of items that may not be listed on eBay because of the downloadable media policy:* A copy of a software program which the successful high bidder can download from your Web site
* Music or video files that you will deliver through a peer to peer file-sharing community or network
* A copy of a downloadable eBook
* A secret URL address where the high bidder can download "freeware" or "shareware" software programs
Guideline
If you are the copyright owner of the downloadable material that you are listing on eBay, make sure you say so in your listing!Warning
Listings violating eBay's downloadable media policy may be ended early by eBay. Multiple violations of eBay's downloadable media policy could result in the suspension of your account.
Read more information on copyrights.
Unfortunately, the auction will be taken down soon...

For a Song...You know the old saying "I got it for a song"?
Well I have the deal of a lifetime for you all. I'm selling a baby seat for less than "a song"! In fact, where the bidding is now, you could buy 64 baby seats "for a song"!
DEAL OF A LIFE TIME!Well, guess that might change if I could get over 10000 page views. No I'm not trying to bring up the price of my baby seat (I'm sure it will get sniped at the last second for 5.01), I'm just showing how a little attention can really make things lop-sided. Enjoy the bidding...suckers!
GP.S. The numbers are sure to change with 6 days left. By that time you'll be able to buy lots of crap for a song!

Article text (already slow to subscribers)Does the Right of First Sale Still Exist?
I just posted an eBay auction for a song I bought from the iTunes music store. It should be interesting to see how this works out. I only spent $0.99 on it but I bought the song just as legally as I would a CD, so I should be able to sell it used just as legally right?
[Update 09-03-2003 10:08 AM] Right now I've come up with a couple ways that the transfer of ownership could take place. One is to call up Apple and ask them to do it for me, which would be an interesting call. The other way would be to give my account to the winning bidder, which doesn't seem like a bid deal considering that I've only purchased one song. Still, I'd have to make sure that my credit card info was completely disassociated with the account. Or I could just create a new account and repurchase the song on that account.
[Update 09-03-2003 11:25 AM] I'd like to respond to a few points made by people: 1. It's true that I'm seeking attention, but not for me personally. This is an experiment in property rights in the digital age, something that's gotten surprisingly little attention. 2. I've read the iTunes agreements and found nothing denying transferability. This isn't any more a commercial venture than selling CDs at the local music store, I'm not incorporated or even DBA. Furthermore, in case anyone thinks this is a cheap way to make a buck I will be donating all proceeds to the EFF. 3. When the song is successfully transferred, I will not be keeping a copy of the song. If I don't own it I shouldn't have a copy.
[Update 09-03-2003 11:25 AM] A very excellent comment below by Piggly Wiggly asks if I will convert the format for delivery. My answer right now is "no" because I don't want to cloud the issue of the sale by changing the format. Also, I'd like to thank all the people posting supportive comments who realize that this is about more than a $0.99 song being over-valued on eBay.
-
Re:CDs Death MarchFrom his eBay listing:
Because of limitations to iTunes Music Store, this song cannot be shipped outside of the United States. Sorry Dutch Double Dutch Bus fans!"
How would this stop him from selling it internationally? He's not acting as a distributor of music for the artist.

Re:Overpriced G5s
How about resale? When the projects wind down and things need upgrading, they can get maybe over half a mil' in return for offloaded desktops (or at least scrap aluminum), as opposed to 57 cents for a bunch of beige schrapnel.

Re:What the hell do you do with 1100 mice?
Well, sell them on eBay, of course!
