Salvia Divinorum and Australia
Many people here are probably not aware of the fact that Australia recently became the first country to outlaw the use and possession of Salvia Divinorum, a psychedelic plant unrelated to any other in known existence (its active component is Salvinorin-A) -- What's to stop them adding sites like sagewisdom and Erowid in an effort to prevent the free flow of information as well? The reasons of its illegality in Australia are somewhat unknown, as the plant itself is not habit forming, or destructive (at least not known to be), and rather singular in its reality modifiying effects... Restricting information on these topics would only do more to prevent the safe usage of such enthegenic substances.

Re:Caffeine toxicity - material safety data
I seriously doubt the LD50 dose of caffeine to be 13mg/kg for humans. I weigh about 70 kg, and thus 70 kg * 13 mg/kg = 910 mg would be "lethal" dose for me (LD50 is the dose where 50 percent of the test subjects die). A cup of coffee contains about 180 mg caffeine, which would mean that you could die from about 5 cups. (This is of course if you drink them straight up, not 5 cups over a day).
You can definitely die from too much caffeine though, take this story for instance.

Try this instead...
If you want to improve your powers of concentration, try Ginko Biloba. I've been taking it for years, 60 mg every morning. I've noticed that my alertness levels are waaay up. I swear by it.
Others might agree.
Note that ginko takes several weeks to build up in your system. Have fun! -
It's called ProvIgil.
And you can find more info here.
The active ingredient is called Modafinil, and appears to have fairly low side effects.
Backtrack up a directory on the above link, and there's more info.

When was the last time you saw your penius? Is it MIA you fatass than do something about it even before this pill comes out, go to any > 60% poverty line white trash town, enter the waffle house/denny's next to any walmart and get some methaphetimine which is probably methcathinone from the skinny strung out white folk therin (you see if they actually ate the food there they would be fat) and start snorting piggy !!!

Methamphetamines
As a person doing research in organic chemistry, I'm sure that my book buying habits would be equally circumspect in the eyes of law enforcement. Sitting on my desk right now? PIKHAL: A Chemical Love Story , a wonderful work of fiction by a researcher interested in the pharmacological properties of phenylethylamines. It just so happens that the second portion of the book reads like a recipe book for something like 180 compounds and includes dosage and effect information. Best part? The second half is freely available online. So essentially, the knowledge is out there and the Denver police should not have concerned themselves with where the recipe came from, but the fact that they were making them.

It's about time.I knew this day would come eventually. Although many of the members of the community may have been more receptive to donation solicitations a la erowid or PBS, token $20 per year for
/. seems reasonable to me.I see a lot of talk about perl filters and other technological solutions to the ad issue. What I don't understand is why anyone thinks it unreasonable to spend a sum of money that, on an individual level is absolutely nothing for the majority of well-paid
/. readers. I routinely spend 5 times that in a single evening when I go out to a bar. Last weekend, I gave my waiter a $10 tip for the first found of drinks he brought us, and at the end of the night he ended up with more than $20 of my money in tips. And he didn't even come close to enriching my life the way that /. has over the past three years.I've wasted hundreds of dollars over the course of my life on crap that I never use. I've seen people drop $25 and up on sachels of party favors that they consume in one evening. Twenty or so dollars per year is simply not a big deal, and
/. is well worth it, IMHO.Still, it would have been nice to have had the option of voluntary donation, instead of this carrot/stick strategy. I would've sent Taco et. al. more money under a donations regime.

This is a case for Jury Nullification
This is so incredibly stupid. Copyright violation is already a crime. All I can ever hope for is to get jury duty on a DMCA\SSSCA case so I can nullify. What more can I do? I have already written my senators (Fritz H. and Strom T. [neither of which got my vote])
More about Jury Nullification

Re:Creation of normal matter
What caused the big bang? How was it initiated? What were the bounds of the "universe" as it were before the big bang?
There was nothing before the Big Bang as it was the beginning of existance. It's sometimes a difficult answer to accept, as you've been accustomed the existance of time all your life, but you have to realize that this wasn't always the case. If you're still having trouble there are some chemicals you can use to help make it clearer.

Re:Can anyone thking of any drugs
I beleive that a small dose of methamphetamine could be very benficial to a chess player. In my experience, if the correct dose is used, a general relaxed feeling comes over the user, as well as a feeling of confidence and speed of thought.
The increase in cognative speed and the general projected confidence could be extremely useful in a chess match.
You'd have to be very careful about the tendancy to over compensate though...

"Alien" Life
The scope of vision for most people when contemplating alien life is woefully narrow. Would our ancestors succeed in contacting alien life through smoke signals and drums? (maybe)
Nothing contradicts the possibility that hyper-advanced beings could manipulate the universe at will, perhaps even modify or conjoin with the fabric of the universe. Our bodys and minds are made up of this fabric, so is it really so far fetched to look within our selves to contact other beings?
In fact, some people believe they have already contacted alien beings through the use of the hallucinogen tryptomanes, like DMT and Psilocybin (mushrooms). A large percentage of DMT "travellers" all experience the same contact with elf-like beings that can control the nature of reality. Some also believe that they have contacted insect like beings through the use of psychedelic mushrooms.
Psychedelic research has a number of distinct advantages over SETI, though I am not saying that the SETI work should stop. First, it's cheap. Psychedelics are available to most people, if they try to find them. Also, hallucinogens get results, and they are testable, if you have the mental stability to handle the large doses required. If you don't believe it, you can try it. And, they also have the capability to expand your mind in ways unimaginable.

Or, you could've just given them this link: http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/caffeine/caffeine

Re:Caffine is a Drug.Exactly. It would probably be illegal. But it's not, and so, it's I think the only stimulant drug that can be sold in supermarkets and to children, and advertised without limits or warnings.
Actually, caffine was covered in a previous

Re:HAL2001?As someone else already mentioned, weed is illegal but tolerated, since it doesn't pose much of a public nuisance.
Fresh, undried, magic mushrooms, however, are completely legal and can be bought in stores everywhere. They're mostly available at places that call themselves "smart shops", although I'm sure you can pick them up at various "coffeeshops".
Sitting on a 1GB uplink while tripping out and smoking some herb does sound pretty appealing though.

Re:Whatever happened to our rights?
I will admit to not knowing enough about PCP to have an opinion on the matter... hmm, it's a dissasociative anaesthetic according to this, and the problems come from both of these properties.
Whilst it does sound bad, I'd be tempted to wonder who would do it if cheap, clean alternatives existed? I mean, it hardly sounds like a worthwhile buzz does it? The trouble with illegalisation is that addicts are often tempted to take whatever they can get hold of without regards for consequences.

Of course! For I am a tractable law abiding citizen. Surely the only people who would mind are thieves and child molesters and drug dealers and commies and satanists and terrorists and (shudder) copyright pirates, right?
Seriously, you want to know how this will be pushed? War on Drugs. A recent test on banknotes in London showed that 99% of them contained traces of cocaine. We must stop the evil! Won't someone please think of the children! And so on.

Re:And..? Counter Point
LSD has more urban legens associated with it than Richard Gere. There is no test in the world that can tell if you've taken LSD if you wait 4 or 5 days after ingestion. It is water soluble (unlike THC), so it isn't stored in your body fat. It is also not stored in your spinal fluid or anywhere else in your body. Flashbacks, if they exist at all, are a purely psychological phenomena.
Check out the FAQ for more info. -
Re:And..? Counter PointFlashbacks are largely urban legend, in so much as they do exist they're more related to post traumatic stress disorder - there is no evidence that LSD is stored in the fatty tissues and randomly re-released later in life. See this or this.
I know, off topic, but I just hate to see incorrect information propagated...

D.A.R.E. is completely ineffective B.S.My only experiences with D.A.R.E. were when the class was taught to me in 5th grade. At the time, I found the class to be a complete waste of my time, since it mainly concentrated on demonizing drug use and instead of giving any actual information was primarily concerned with scaring us of jail time and ordering us to "Just say no".
And now, 10 years later, I have done alcohol, marijuana, LSD, and MDMA, (I am also now a smoker, which is something I tremendously regret), and I feel I am no worse off for it. Until I came to college, I had an incredible lack of proper information on the subject and wouldn't have been much more cautious about trying different substances.
The thing I see as the greatest problem with D.A.R.E. is the downplaying of the dangers of alochol, since they are mainly concerned with preventing underage drinking. In fact, however, alcohol is much worse for the human body than a lot of other drugs. It's simply been grandfathered into our society because it's been around for so long. I believe that if people were simply given decent information on these substances (At sites such as Erowid.org and lycaeum.org (Lyceaum is much larger but poorly organized, Erowid is beautifully organized and a great place to start for real information on drugs)) that we would see an increase in "soft" drug use, but also a decease in hard drug use.
Of course, my personal belief is that the US should legalize ALL drugs, not just some. They should also retract any and all laws that govern crimes against ones self. (ie- Some state just recently outlawed sex toys.. what a complete load of BS). What people do in their own homes should be up to them. Granted, there should be laws governing their actions while on these substances (ie- things similar to drunk driving laws).
The results of making these drugs legal would mean 1) An increase in the quality of street drugs (which has been a problem with MDMA) 2) Would lead to a decrease in price 3) would eliminate the crime associated with illegal drug trafficing 4) Would create a new source of revenue for the US government, or the drug companies, while eliminating the need to spend trillions on the "War against drugs" 5) Would result in an overall more informed populace.
Of course we all know how wonderfully draconian the US government loves to be when deciding what its citizens are and aren't allowed to do to themselves. Isn't it a great society we live in? (Well, it's pretty decent, not great though, but it's the best the human race has come up with so far)

Why D.A.R.E. doesn't work, and why it won't changeBeing a graduate of D.A.R.E., I feel I have a little something to say about it. Many of the comments I have read here seem to say that D.A.R.E. is nothing more than government propaganda to keep Our Nation's Children from becoming addicted to marijuana and other illegal mind-altering and mood-enhancing substances. And for many reasons, I hold the same view. Much of what is taught in the D.A.R.E. program concerning the softer drugs (i.e. marijuana, LSD, and MDMA or 'ecstasy') is almost completely baseless propaganda. The instructors hired by this program first tell horror stories of smack-junkies, crackheads, and other users who spend a large portion of their lives and money supporting habits that they can't control. (Note that these are drugs of the harder variety, whose use can easily become physically addicting.) The instructor then places the softer, non-habit forming drugs in the same category, essentially creating a singular negative idea of 'drugs' in the minds of the children.
The problem with this is that:
- The horror stories are representative of a small portion of the population that uses drugs, and, concerning the softer drugs,
- It is baseless propaganda
This, in its own way, is not a good thing. Many of my friends who did graduate D.A.R.E. and became potsmokers and acidtrippers and rollers know just enough about the chemicals they put in their bodies to believe that, instead of being completely and utterly detrimental to their entire life, these drugs are almost completely safe.
So while they now know that marijuana is non-habit forming, they may not know that those who smoke risk a greater chance of neck and throat cancer, along with everything that smoking a cigarette might cause (although since many potsmokers smoke much less marijuana than cigarette smokers, they don't stand as high a risk).
While LSD is practically impossible to overdose on (as is marijuana), and in its pure form does not cause nerve damage, it can cause psychological damage in those who are not prepared for it (i.e. taking a much larger dose than they are mentally capable of handling).
MDMA, or ecstasy, is quite probably linked with minor to significant nerve damage, as well as forms of depression in heavy users. The problem is not just in the way the D.A.R.E. instructor groups all drugs into one category. It is also the drug laws that persist in the United States. The instructor can't rightly say to a room of fourthgraders that marijuana and LSD have little to no eventual consequences and then reaffirm that they are illegal. The D.A.R.E. program is just a proponent of the U.S.'s draconian antidrug laws.
For the D.A.R.E. program to be viable, it must first be truthfully informative. If children were to get viable and honest information on the various substances out there, as well as methods of using them responibly, drug use may go up, but I believe that hard drug use will go down. But for the D.A.R.E. program to teach children honest information about the drugs out there, the ill-informed and unjust drug laws in the United States would have to be overturned. And that is something I (regrettably) don't see happening anytime soon.
For an extensive database on the different drugs out there, try lycaeum.org and erowid.org. Both are highly informative and lycaeum.org contains the largest trip report database on the web.

DARE is fundamentally flawed
DARE has many fundamental problems with it which are inextricably linked with the moronic attitude of the drug war.
The first is that "drugs" is ill-defined and is equated with the irrational schedule policies of the DEA/FDA. Everything you ingest is a drug. Every lipid, amino acid, carbohydrate, tryptamine, amphetamine, etc. etc. all have effects on your body and your brain- whether it be LSD or L-Tyrosine. To promote a healthy attitude in the populace, one needs to show the reality of cause and effect of everything you ingest. It is hypocritical of schools to be having anti-marijuana campaigns through DARE when such things are funded by PepsiCola or Mcdonalds- just as if not more deleterious to one's body as some "hard" drugs. Don't beleive me? Check out the increasing rates of hypoglycemia and diabetes among the youth generation, and compare that with the rates of, say, methamphetamine addiction (you'll find the former is much higher). The rational approach is a holistic approach- advocating the ability to regain bio and mental homeostasis even after extreme conditions (stress, drugs, lack of exercise)- which leaves the decision in the hands of well-informed youth, and not in horribly misinformed disempowered generation.
That said, there are positive effects to many illicit substances- enhancements in creativity, insight in self, stress relief, etc. Just like there are positive effects to eating a fatty and heavy meal, or taking medication to treat a disease. Ideally, one can avoid doing all of the above. Practically, its not going to happen- and teaching strategies for one to effectively using a state of homeostasis (sobriety) to get through life is critical, and is severly lacking in our bass-ackwards society.
The second problem is not only is a bad philosophy being taught, but misinformation is freewheelingly handed out, which not only destroys the credibility of the program, but also endangers the lives of many youth who may not have access to reliable information when drugs come their way. Yes, methamphetamine and heroin are not good- Ive had many a friends have their lives disrupted by it. On the same token, marijuana and and LSD dont kill- Ive taken them and am probably much more of a productive member of society than most, regardless. The harm prevention comes down to situations like: "When I am in a club scene, how much water should I drink, and what activity level should I have to prevent injury?" or "What dosages can cocaine have addictive effects?". Thanks to not having full factual disclosure, DARE has resulted not in the decline of drugs, but rather, the irresponsible use of drugs. In fact, I would go so far to say that the advent of the internet and sites like hyperreal, erowid and groups like rec.drugs have saved tens of thousands of lives in drug situations thanks to factual accounts.
The third problem, is by introducing police (and other legal strongarm elements in to the situation), DARE has created an antagonistic relationship with legal system and the youth right off. Youth immediately become part of a criminal class- a class which is suspect of being "bad" under any circumstances. At best, As everyone in the 10-25 age group knows, this mentality has blossomed into the "crucify the different" mentality with all the anti-geek, anti-punk, etc. crusades occuring after Columbine regardless of the productivity or general goodness of the kids involved (its a total lack of philosophy, thinking, and humanity on the part of the administrations). At worst, kids who may have bad lives and chemical dependency problems are physically abused, tortured, and shipped off to the gulag, where they descend further and further into complete alienation from the positive aspects of society. The police involvement in the DARE program in it's current use makes police into nothing more than at best a gestapo, and at worst into just another really violent gang of thugs, given license to brutality by society. What happened to "officer friendly"? If you are going to have legeal intervention, it should be for the positive, and not by blindly treating all kids who use drugs, or happen to associate with a particular group as cockroaches- needing to be wiped out from society.
All of what I say is coming from growing up in the American Public School system in the time of the drug war, and having been in all sorts of different social roles (as math/computer whiz kid, a disgruntled political student, an illicit substance user, teacher's pet, etc. etc.). My suggestion for DARE managers, and people who want to stop seeing substance abuse is to Stop the Madness- stop buying the bullshit about crime and drugs. Stop thinking of drugs as an evil force. Stop thinking of black and white. Realize that substance ingestment is a lifestyle and health issue- a holistic issue that cannot and should not be treated as something that is an ethical or moral issue, any more than the decision to be a couch potato or having promiscous sex. It is an issue that cannot be improved without realizing that drug use and drug abuse is inevitable within a population, and what needs to be aimed for is harm reduction through rational, factual information!
Of course, I'm probably typing all of this for naught, since the blindness of the legislation and the brutality of the uneducated folks working in the educationa and police systems right now, refuse to even recognize the existence of the content of what I am saying, much less consider a different approach.
..."Here Kids- here's a free voucher for a Big Mac and Coke since you've sat here listening to us preach for the past hour."... Yeah, great policy (*sarcasm intended*) -
Short Answer = No
I "graduated" from DARE the first year it came out. Granted it has changed since then, but when I look back at it, the majority of things tought were either outright lies or didn't work.
My mother (Hi mom) was on the local DARE board, then finally quit and told me she didn't think it was doing any good.
(People in gerneral and) Teens are going to do drugs if they want to. Nothing is going to change that. They will overdose on heroin and die, get drunk and drive and die, get addicted to tobacco at age 14, etc.
Trying to force them to do otherwise will make some want to do it even more. I don't see programs like DARE or 'get tough on crime' doing anything to help, but rather I think education is the key. Sites like Erowid or Rhodium can do more good through education than fear-mongering can do.
[OT - Am I a felon for linking those sites?]

Drug use = death at 30?
Money and drugs. Dealers are also attracted to get rich quick schemes. Sure, it's hype. Nothing new here, not even your silly users vrs. abusers delusion.
So what, you're saying that everyone that uses drugs is an abuser? You don't see any difference between someone who has, say, the odd wrap of speed every month or two and someone who takes it every day? Believe me, there's a world of difference.
My dad's a cardiologist and he's seen the results of regular use. It's a heart that's mostly scar tissue before you are 30. This is also known as death and is generally a non event after you've spent all your money on drugs and driven off all of your friends.
Ah, so you do believe that drug use leads to an inevitable death, at age 30 no less. Whilst many drugs can, when taking in large quantities or over a period of time, have dangerous physical side effects, regular use is generally no more dangerous than drinking regularly, and certainly in the case of marijuana, much less so.
If it's not legal, you don't have any idea of what it is till you use it. Get Real, if you feel the urge to buy something like that you have a problem.
Unless you check out any of the dozens of online sources for drug information, such as the Vaults of Erowid. And considering the amount of people who have admitted to doing drugs, it strikes me as odd that you think each and every one of these people has a "problem".
Maybe you didn't mean it quite as it sounded, but your post comes across as unreasonably naive.
-
Re:How about drug trafficing news.com?
The drug analogy has already been discussed, so both these posts are redundant.
There are plenty of sites that deal with drugs: www.erowid.org and www.lycaeum.org are good examples, as well as the many sites that report on Ectasy pill testing such as www.dancesafe.org and www.bluelight.nu.
None of these sites will tell you "all the great places to grab some dope or pickup som". iSONEWS will not tell you where or how to download CD images.
The comparisions extend even further--the Ecstasy drug testing sites will tell you which pills have DXM or other harmful chemicals, and iSONEWS will often report on any releases that have bad cracks or install problems. -
Re:I am all for free speech but...let's use an analogy to real life: what if you had a site like drugnews.com, that tells you everything about the newest drugs released, their latest effects, and maybe has a forum with various people who know how to get those drugs and whom you can email etc.
Umm, you mean sites like erowid.org, the lycaeum, dancesafe, and bluelight, just to name a few? Yeah, heaven forbid we put unbiased information on drugs on the net so that people can make informed decisions for themselves rather than having the governments FUD shoved down their throats.
Perhaps you also want to be upset about books like Pihkal, which has trip reports and labratory sythesises for hundreds of drugs? What about books like Total Synthesis which give detailed instructions for the synthesis of amphetamines? Yeah, better make those illegal, too.
For the record, I could care less about making illegal substances in my bathtub, but I think it's my right to read how they are made should I choose to put them in my body.

BRUNNER
John Brunner is definately great. Check out Age of Miracles, that book left me astonished. Then I let it sit on the shelf for ten years, and read it again, and was... astonished. The way he captures the hyperdimensional experience is enlightening.
-
Re:an interesting correlation....
Also, does anybody know how this works in physical print?
In the US, at least, freedom of speech is valued enough that pretty much anything is allowed to be printed. A good example would be Loompanics who published such things as the original Anarchist's Cookbook, and other devious materials.
I think that the linking is a sub-issue raised by this case. The real debate is about whether or not code is speech. If Kaplan thought that all computer code counted as such, then it would be free and under the same provisions as Loompanic's mischevious manuals, or books on illegal drugs like PIHKAL. (try Erowid for more info.) However, he is clearly of the opinion that the source code is not speech like a book, but is something else (or more likely Kaplan is not computer-savvy enough to grasp the difference between source code and an actual program).
If I was as cynical now as I was in high-school, I would add: Big business won even though they weren't actually right. Welcome to America.

Everyone should check out the resources available at places such as:
Erowid
The Lycaeum
Ecstasy.org
Dancesafe
To those that think drugs are evil, remember Prozac, Ritalin, the heart medicine you take, the pills your grandmother takes every day, and then think about just how much you actually know about the things you put in your body daily.
Do your research -- Enjoy drugs w/peace of mind.

Re:this REALLY concerns me....
Ha Ha Ha, you're a misinformed idiot (like the guys on capitol hill) How active is cocaine when taken orally? How much would be needed to excite the dopamine transmitters and whatnot? I'm sure it would be much more than the 200mg a pill of MDMA is. Oh yeah, Cocaine lasts about twenty minutes, one exposure when masked by the stimulant properties of MDMA cannot lead to addiction. Hmm, let me think..this sounds like those stories of E laced with heroin..something that is virtually inactive at the doses required to fit in a pill when taken orally. Are you pulling these facts out of your ass..are you getting this information from drugfreeamerica.org-clearly a non-biased website. Try actually learning about drugs (it doesn't have to be first hand) through books (oh wait, congress is going to take away those rights..I can't wait to see kids at parties drinking too much water or mixing MDMA with alcohol because they cannot get any information.) Why shouldn't we regulate the recreational drug phenomonon--because the Goverment is run by a bunch of Puritanical Christians and Idealistic Liberals? God, this makes me sick.. Oh yeah, if it weren't for websites such as erowid and lycaeum two of my friends would have been seriously hurt when they drank a vile of acid...wanna know why? Because I learned that Chlorpromazine Maleate is an anti-psychotic and that thorazine (which I had supplies of) would also help to bring them back to ground zero. Would this law also ban sites whose intent is to help others (i.e. needle exchange sites with tips on how to safely inject)? Instead of sweeping the drug "problem" under the tables and ignoring the fact that they exist, I would propose that we the american people legalize our rights to property and capitalize on our ability to treat our bodies as our own temples..to injest whatever we like, no matter how harmful the government says..god..I'm sure whoppers and big macs contribute to more deaths than all illegal drugs combined. What were there? like 5 deaths in the US last year in which *only* MDMA was involved.. what 100 in which the stupid (I say stupid because they are uninformed..cause they didn't read up) and mixed alcohol or other drugs with their e.. Oh and lets see..how many deaths occur each year to alcohol poisoning, driving under the influence of alcohol? Who are we going to believe? An oppressive government and its propaganda spreading "education campaigns? (DARE,DRUGFREEAMERICA, NIDA,DEA) or those researchers who present only the facts? (the late Dr. Saunders, the folks at MAPS.org) The choice isn't hard.. I personally would like to choose facts over fiction. Sincerely everyones with peace love unity and respect, Josh

Confession of a Drug Synthesis Info Proliferator[ Okay, not exactly a confession, but it was the snappiest title I could think of ]
Back around 1991 or 1992 I setup what I believe is was the first drug information site on the internet using the University of Washington's publically accessable FTP server. The information in that site was incorporated into hyperreal and from there into lycaeum and erowid. I've authored texts on how to Synthesize MDMA and Synthesize LSD.
I would just like to know how we're supposed to have discussions about heavy metal contaminants in methamphetamine synthesis or chromates in methcathinone if we can't discuss how those drugs are actually manufactured? What is different about me reading about how to synthesize drugs on the net and going down to the medical and chemistry libraries at my local university and reading about them there? The latter information is necessary for professionals and scholars to be able to intelligently discuss issues surrounding the synthesis of illegal drugs. Why are people on the net being singled out for exclusion and not being allowed to access this information?
If this law passes I plan on putting up a site which contains exactly the same kinds of information that you can get from the journal of forensic science or journal of medicinal chemsitry but violates the law by including information on the synthesis of illegal drugs (just like those journals do).
This proposed law is blatantly unconstitutional and Diane Feinstein can kiss my ass.

Dancing all night on trancy sounds, ingesting advanced mind-altering substances. How could one not like electronic dance music (please note: != techno).

"The tree of liberty must be periodically watered with the blood of patriots" -Benjamin Franklin
Not to be picky or anything, but that was actually Thomas Jefferson. And he was right... and so are you. When a law is wrong, it MUST be challenged and destroyed; that's why they saw fit to include a little thing known as "Jury Nullification" in the founding laws of this nation. Basically, it means that a jury can find a defendant fully and completely guilty of a violation of law, but refuse to punish him for it because they don't think that law should BE a law. And you will NEVER hear it mentioned in a court of law, on TV, or anywhere except in a few books and movies (and, now, a few websites). Try to guess why. That's right: if We, the Sheeple, knew about it, why, we'd be chopping down laws all over the place! Can't have THAT, now can they? Undermining their hard-fought-for and bought-with-lobbyists laws like that would take away some of Their power, now wouldn't it?
So what better forum to spread knowledge of its existence than right here on good old slashdot?

There. Now go do some research on the topic, and shudder with anger when you realize how you've been lied to all these years by judges and lawyers...

MORE MORE MOREAs you can see if you read the links above and fully understand them, the power of Jury Nullification is about the only power left to We the People. We don't have enormous wealth, we aren't in positions of political power, we don't have adequate representation in the legislative bodies of the government (meaning, of course, we can't be taxed either, but that's a whole 'nuther post), we don't have a stranglehold on any particular commodity or service (though think what would happen if we all suddenly configured our firewalls and BGP routers to stop letting packets through
:)... Jury Nullification was GIVEN to us by the founding fathers because they knew in their wisdom that we would never have as much power as those who are so easily corrupted by it. It Is Our ONLY Weapon Against Them And Their Evil, People!! Do not let it fall by the wayside again. Tell everyone you know about it. Print out all the above webpages I linked to in 48-point Arial and paste them all up and down the streets of your cities. Don't Let THEM Win!!!Thank you.

Re:About time!
I think we need to get the word out to hackers that they're not the only ones that know about DeCSS. And that not all non-hackers are evil. Some non-hackers are good. We call them "White hat non-hackers". The bad non-hackers, we refer to as "Black hat non-hackers". The media keeps spreading the incorrect image that all non-hackers don't know about DeCSS, but that's just not true. Spread the word to hackers!
