World First?
They obviously haven't been doing enough research.

I'll try posting this in the -right- thread now.

We have a linux-only retail shop in australia!
Go to Everything Linux
It's been around for several years as well.. It sells linux distros, linux compatible hardware, and linx related software (vmware/etc) -
Re:Store in Sydney
Actually they've only been going since 1999
-
Re:Everythng Linux in Sydney probably comes closer
They're in Five Dock. Been there for years. Definitely one of my favourite shops in Sydney %-)
-
Not the first by a long shot
http://www.everythinglinux.com.au is a Linux-only retailer in Sydney that's been open for years.
Perhaps they are the first Linux-only retailer in the US? -
Re:It never ends though
The external fanless power supply I am using is just a brick that provides 12VDC at 4+A -- the kind of power supply you might find on a laptop. Inside the computer case is a DC-DC converter, which is then attached to the standard ATX power connector on the motherboard.

I would send....
Do you have a payload that you would like to put in orbit around the Earth?
...Yes my one meter tall Plush Tux Penguin
If they could launch something into space towards the sun I would nominate my Microsoft and SCO Operating system licenses..."Burn baby burn"...

Re:Now the question is...
You can buy it here.
It's AU$25, which is about US$18 these days. -
Re:simplistic
Here in Australia I heard a radio advert for the online store Everything Linux, on the 2UE (Sydney) channel. My mind suffered a brief freeze for a second - Linux - advertised on radio!?

Something to watch out for, when using these...
I've used IDE-SCSI convertors with IDE CDR burners.
In Unices, they work wonderfully, which is fine by me. But a friend of mine, who uses Windows mostly, bought a Sony CDRW drive, Adaptec SCSI controller and an IDE-SCSI convertor.
In my system (OpenBSD), it all works fine, but in his Windows machine, most software we tried (Latest Nero, EZCD, etc) would not find the CDRW drive. They would scan the IDE and SCSI busses, but not find any drive that they "know" it seems. With the Sony plugged in to the IDE bus, there was no problem. It's as if they can only use drive models that they are aware of, rather than falling back on a generic driver.
Burning from within WinXP's built in burning worked fine, but bloody slow to even get to the point of burning.
BTW, Yamaha's new SCSI burners are actually IDE burners with Yamaha supplied IDE-SCSI convertors.
The unit we tried is an ARC760 based unit from here.

Re:Disclaimer My Ass!
I know you're Kevin H. Spencer. I went to your blog, then searched for your book, and found it listed for sale on the same page as the book you were reviewing.
It's in no way unreasonable for me to suggest this glowing review, which leads directly into a link for me to click on to purchase the book, should have included the sentence: "Kevin Spencer is a technical writer, and has written books on programming for OSX." That would have allowed me to make a fully informed reading of your review.
Now, everyone take a deep breath, and count to ten.

Re:I don't envy the developers
They will be judged against people's rose tinted rememberances of the original Wolfenstein 3D. And no matter how good it is, people will say 'Ahhh I enjoyed the original more.'
Are you sure? From the trailer and the multiplayer preview it looks awesome - check the realistic explosion on the building, the physics of the soldiers flying in with parachutes, and, or course, the flamethrower, which I think I'll probably remeber as much as the first time I heard `meinleiven' (or whatever) come out of the shiny new SoundBlaster 2.0
It will also be one of the first single player focused 3D shooters to be released on the Linux platform for ages (depending on whether or not Heavy Metal FAKK 2 makes its way to the shelves quicker or not). Rune and Heretic were third person, and Q3 and UT were multiplayer focused. This has me salivating for a good single player FPS - they're a lot more atmospheric than multi or third person games.
And of course, the obligatory reminder that you all should buy it from Tux Games (for all you Yanks), Everything Linux or wherever else will ship with the Linux binaries to show your support for your OS of choice ... -
What about *after* the war?OT: No, not the graphically excellent 8-bit computer game from 1991 called "After The War"...
T: After this conflict, will we see that Bin Laden speech in full? Will we hear about all the other things that are being kept (rightly) silent now? Or will they be stamped "Top Secret - 25 years", and only released when many of us are collecting our pensions and don't give a damn?
We just have to make sure that the current conflict just keeps on with its original aims - combat terrorists, terrorism and supporters of terrorism, and doesn't morph early next year into a different beast (cheaper oil would be nice, wouldn't it?). There needs to be public accountability for the actions of the military within all conflicts, to ensure that they operate within the bounds of their mission, and that they should not become a pawn in some political game.
Which I don't think will happen this time, but though like pointing out.

Re:My copy left Loki on the 27th of August
On another note http://www.everythinglinux.com.au stock plenty of Loki games and most of them are on special.
-
Loki and SDL
Please remember that SDL development was done mostly by the lead programmer for Loki.
If you all want more work to be done on it, go buy Loki games (from Loki themselves or one of their resellers like everythinglinux or Tux Games. Without Loki, there will be much slower development of SDL -
CDs in Australia....
I just checked out Linux System Labs and EverythingLinux for the CDs (they both contribute to debian and are listed as such on the debian web site). Amazingly, LSL has Potato CDR's, and they don't seem to be 'beta' versions either. Someone must at LSL must be on the debian-announce mailing list

Re:Mandrake 7.1 NOT for Sale????
Wait 'til they actually release 7.1 final and not just the beta, and then check out EverythingLinux. It'll be there ASAP - CDR for about $AU 10-15 I imagine. Or have a look at the Mandrake mirror at aarnet which I imagine will have a download soon.

Statistics and information for the caring!Just thought I'd throw some stats about the show as people were asking above - great to see guys like Rob coming over to Sydney (even if it is a holiday) to support us. (Maybe I'll even grab him when he walks past next time 'n say "G'day").
Last year at IT2000 (the parent show of LinuxExpo) there were 36m^2 (from 3 stands) for Linux, this year there is an entire sub-show (sp?) called LinuxExpo that has over 800m^2 (from 30 stands). That's not a bad increase in one year IMHO.
The unfortunate thing is noone seems to be selling anything? (Apart from Everything Linux) We've had lots of frustrated customers trying to BUY our sample CD's from LinuxCentral because Mandrake / Corel etc. stalls aren't actually selling product - just large fake boxes? What gives distributors?
Saw Raster talking on Enlightenment (great to see UNSW alumni doing so well), Rasmus on PHP and more - all good! Would have loved to have seen Rob give a talk on building web communities or somesuch. But probably not under the guise of the 'Linux' show - next time.
Other interesting things of note
- Quake 3 running on stinking big SGI machines (always fun to watch - but get a network boys!)
- Intel stand - big signs saying "Intel supports RedHat, Mandrake, Corel Linux, etc etc" - shouldn't that be the OTHER way around AndyG?!
- TurboLinux ice creams and tattoo's - a perpetual supply throughout the day to exhibitors, mucho gratias
- The plethora of American accents - maybe not interesting, or even different - a taste of things to come during the Olympics?
- IBM? Hello Lou Gerstner?! IBM have a small (3x3 metre) stand in the far corner, not their usual huge whopping glowing bright red 'e-everywhere' - and IBM is fully behind Linux now?
- The great guys at the australia.internet.com stand - ok, slightly biased.
If you're wanting to come along but are to cheap to pay $20 to get in, give me a call 0413 310 107 tomorrow or Friday and we'll scoot out with a free pass for ya (if you don't already have one). Only catch being you have to come visit our booth - australia.internet.com - right in front of the door - below the LinuxCare guru lounge - can't miss it.
Any other show reports from attendees? Exhibitors? - Quake 3 running on stinking big SGI machines (always fun to watch - but get a network boys!)
