Re:weird
The reality is, the Chinese government is probably more worried about other Chinese students finding out about Falung Gong or other religions while studying abroad
I'm a Chinese student studying in the US. I found out about Falun Gong, by carefully reading through its bible, Zhuan Falun. English version here: http://www.falundafa.org/book/eng/pdf/zfl_new.pdf The book says the Supreme Master of Falun Gong can emit neutrons and gamma rays. By practicing Falun Gong you can gain compound eyes on your face which allows you to see into extra dimensions. You can even levitate up into the air while meditating, defying the laws of physics. Totally amazing. Besides, the book advocates practicing Falun Gong as an alternative to seeking medical treatments. Now I believe CCP's allegation that Falun Gong caused thousands to die because those ill people avoided medical treatment. Having read about the censored "bible" makes love Falun Gong so much more!

Re:A Waste?
Basically, it's a large sect, which teaches QiGong.
I don't think sect means what you think it means. The proper word for a religious organization is a cult. And it most definitely is a religious cult, since the founder basically claims to be a divine being and teaches his followers to militantly defend his "law"
The PRC government has historically encouraged Qigong and other traditional art forms. Hell, it's pretty much categorized as a medical science in China. Non-Falun Gong Qigong certainly isn't prosecuted, I used to see groups of old people practicing in formation every morning. In fact, in 1982 the government passed a policy to not promote, debate, or criticize Qigong (I can't find a detailed explanation of this policy in English, but here's the source in Chinese). If it's simply Qigong, why do people cling to it so resolutely? Would you set yourself on fire to protest the government banning yoga, or at least go around passing out pamphlets about how great yoga is on street corners and university campuses? It's obviously a little more hardcore than plain Qigong.
Have you read the actual teachings of Falun Gong? Before you put the face of the well-meaning mystic on Falun Gong, check out their publications. Here are a few choice snippets.
We've found that when a person is born, many, many him are born at the same time within a certain range of the space of this universe.
They found that? Really?
When a person is born, his whole life is already laid out there in a specific dimension. Meaning, where he is in his life, what he's supposed to do, and so onâ"it's all there. So who arranged his life? It's obviously done by higher beings.
The fact is, qigong treatments can't be like ordinary people's healing methods - it's not an ordinary person's skill. It's something higher. And are higher things allowed to disrupt the ordinary world on a large scale? A Buddha's capabilities are just awesome - with the wave of a Buddha's hand all of the human race's sicknesses could vanish. Then why don't any Buddhas do that, especially when there are so many of them? Why don't they have mercy and heal you? Because that's just how the ordinary world is
Right, and God conceals traces of His work to give us free will.
I divided my gong among the disciples who I brought along. Each of them got a share, and they were energy clusters composed of over 100 abilities. I sealed their hands, but still, some of them suffered bites to the hand that broke the skin, caused blisters, or made them bleed, and that even happened a lot. Those things are so fierce. You think youâ(TM)d dare to touch them with your ordinary personâ(TM)s hands?
Yes, my disciples are obviously superior to ordinary people, so you better not try where they failed. But if you join the ranks of my disciples then you'll be elevated from the ordinary. Classic.
When a person has a tumor somewhere, an infection somewhere, a bone spur somewhere, or whatever, in another dimension there's a being crouching at that place. In a deep dimension there's a being there. A typical qigong master can't see that, because the usual supernatural abilities can't see it, and they can only see that the person has black qi in his body. Wherever there's black qi there's illnessâ"they're right about that. But, black qi is not the root cause of the problem. Instead, it's a being in a deeper dimension, and it's that being that produces the field.
I don't even have to ridicule it, it ridicules itself. This ain't government propaganda, folks. Straight from the horse's mouth.

Re:My religion
Part of it is letting a section feel wrong to me, then breaking that section down, and letting certain parts feel wrong, then asking what would feel right, checking that feeling of right with all the other occurrences. It is important to go to the original texts, for one, but looking at translations in other languages is beneficial too.
Also, while the Bible is the base of my investigations, I read materials from other religions. I've glanced at the Book of Mormon and have serious issues with the fact that the "source text" has gone missing. I look at apocryphal works. Of the materials from other religions, the one most curious to me currently are the http://www.falundafa.org/ documents.

Re:The article is not Factual.Epoch times is not run by Falun Gong. Falun Gong is just an exercises system and has no concept of organization or even membership. All teachings are available for free download on http://www.falundafa.org/
Resolution No 188, Unanimously Passed by the United States Congress States:"Whereas Falun Gong is a peaceful and nonviolent form of personal belief and practice with millions of adherents in the People's Republic of China and elsewhere;
Whereas the Government of the People's Republic of China has forbidden Falun Gong practitioners to practice their beliefs, and has systematically attempted to eradicate the practice and those who follow it;""Whereas Jiang Zemin's regime has created notorious government `610' offices throughout the People's Republic of China with the special task of overseeing the persecution of Falun Gong members through organized brainwashing, torture, and murder;
Whereas propaganda from state-controlled media in the People's Republic of China has inundated the public in an attempt to breed hatred and discrimination; ""tens of thousands have been tortured while confined in labor camps, prisons, and mental hospitals, and hundreds of thousands have been forced to attend brainwashing classes;
Whereas official measures have been taken to conceal all atrocities, such as the immediate cremation of victims, the blocking of autopsies, and the false labeling of deaths as from suicide or natural causes; The practice grew very quickly in popularity and in less than 6 years the teachings were translated to over 40 languages, and spread to over 60 countries... According to a 1998 estimate by the Chinese State Sports Administration ( reported in New York Times), there were over 70 million practitioners in Beijing alone.
All teachings, exercise Instruction videos and lecture videos are available for free download. THere is no need to even go to a local park or even meet another practitioner to learn or practice falun gong. One can teach oneself the exercises and practice during free-time. As simple as that. THere is nothing more to Flun Gong practice and there is absolutely no concept of "organization".
THe book Falun Gong says:"When propagating Dafa and teaching the exercises, no Falun Dafa disciple is allowed to collect a fee or accept any gifts. Anyone who violates this rule is no longer a Falun Dafa disciple."
Master Da Liu, the world-renowned Master who introduced Tai Chi to America and the author of several books on Tai Chi, Qi Gong and the author of several books on Tai Chi made the following statement at the age of 95:
"I had been teaching Taichi and studying various Qigong practices for more than 40 years when I started looking into Falun Dafa. I now tell all my students to practice Falun Dafa."

On 9 March 2006, allegations were made of deaths at the Sujiatun detention compound, an alleged labor camp and part of the China Traditional Medicine Thrombosis Treatment Center located in Shenyang City, Liaoning province. According to at least two witnesses interviewed by The Epoch Times, internal organs of living Falun Gong practitioners have been harvested and sold to the black market, and the bodies have been cremated in the hospital's boiler room. The witnesses make allegations of nobody coming out of the camp alive, as well as six thousand practitioners being held captive at the hospital since 2001, two-thirds of them have died -

The cause may lie elsewhereCould this have something to do with the fact that China Telecom charges close to $1 per minute for calls to United States and Europe?
As the article stated:
China routinely blocks access to Web sites on politically sensitive subjects such as the banned Falun Gong spiritual movement and the 1989 crackdown at Tiananmen Square
I'd say it has more to do with the fact that people (mainly Falun Gong practitioners) like to use services such as Skype to tell Chinese mainlanders, who don't have access to free (as in speech) media, the truth about the persecution that's going on there. -

Chinese Citizens: What Your Government Is HidingDear Citizens of China, Since your communist government is blocking access to Google, and assuming that you can read Slashdot, here are a few web pages that your government would probably prefer you not read:
- Here's a page which talks about Jasper becker's book Hungry Ghosts, which covers how farm collectivization during Mao's "Great Leap Forward" resulted in the death of some 30-60 million of your countrymen.
- Here's a page which discusses the genocide rsulting from China's invasion of Tibet, where "over 17 percent of the Tibetan people killed, and 6,000 monasteries ruined."
- Finally, here's a page discussing the practice of Falun Gong. Now I'm personally not a believer in Falun Gong, but since I live in a nation blessed with freedom of religion, and since your government would rather execute people rather than let them practice it, perhaps you should find out for yourself what it is they so desperately don't want you to hear.

China's Human Rights Violations
Due to the vast number of Falun Gong practitioners in the world (over 100 million) I think that the largest reason for this censorship is because the number of these people (who attempt to align themselves with truthfulness, compassion, and forebearance) grew so fast in China that they outnumbered the members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and since Falun Gong practitioners are not interested in politics, the CCP considered this a threat.
This censorship by China has taken it's most cruel form in the sense that (and this is a FACT) there is currently PERSECUTION going on in China, and it is extending outside of China. The CCP is even trying to make moves on pracitioners here in the U.S. but OUR government won't allow them to. -
Re:Falun Gong
You guys can say what you want about Li Hongzhi, I just hope you don't make a huge mistake. It should be noted that there is PERSECUTION going on in China where the CCP is murdering, brainwashing, and torturing people who practice Falun Gong, a practice that centers itself on what it considers to be the cosmic characteristic of the universe TRUTHFULNESS, COMPASSION AND FOREBEARANCE (Zhen-Shan-Ren)

Seriously? Unexplainable Phenomenon?
I don't find these issues to be unexplainable or unsupported in the least. The idea that these events are unexplainable "phenomena" is nothing more than a direct consequence of a limitation resulting from an individual's chosen belief system. The only reason these things become hard to comprehend or understand is because a person refuses to accept things past a certain level. The extent of the criteria a person uses to divide those beliefs and understandings (capable of explaining these things) directly determines whether they belong to faith or science. Quite frankly, I would day that people are either significantly under-educated in this regard or are to close-minded to accept facts and principles which are either not yet public, or are barely out of their tangible reach. You want to know how these things exist as they do? You could start by reading this: http://falundafa.org/book/eng/zflus.html

Re:Fulan GongPoint taken; my apologies, I was in a hurry.
The thing is, there doesn't seem to be a really good reason why the Chinese government is persecuting them so strongly. They claim that it is a subversive and violent cult, but no other country (they have followers around the world) seems to have any problem with them. It really just looks like the Chinese government cracking down on a spiritual movement that preaches anti-materialism -- and, in particular, an organization that was extremely popular, grew very quickly, and existed outside of state control. Quasi-fascist governments such as China's don't have a great deal of tolerance for organizations that do not conform to state ideology. Also, this wouldn't be the first religious group the Chinese government has persecuted for no concrete reason (other than to focus people's loyalty entirely to the State). Here are some quick links:

kultur?
I'm not sure cultural factors are primary here. Yes, there is a long heritage of collective responsibility, deference to elders and clan leaders, the paternalist state, etc. But do recall that the current regime has engaged in widespread, politically-motivated murder and torture.
The Party regards a form of collective spiritual and physical exercise as a political threat and have imprisoned and tortured its followers. It is within the living memory of most Chinese that the universities were emptied and intellectuals, professors and students forced to undergo *political re-education* on collective farms and forced-labor camps. Millions of Chinese have died for their political views (even the mere potential for dissenting views) in the last sixty years.
Which is why the current appropriation of the slogan *Let a thousand flowers bloom* sticks in my craw so. Besides being a mis-translation, this slogan of the early days of the cultural revolution was not an invitation to voice new ideas or question established norms, but bait to lure dissenting elements into the open. It is like saying *arbeit macht frei.* It may or may not be so, but to use the phrase in any but a historical context would be deeply offensive to many, even today. That such a reaction is not invited by the Chinese phrase is a testament to Western cultural astigmatism. -
Falun Gong
From http://www.falundafa.org/eng/faq.htm
Q: What is Falun Dafa, or Falun Gong?
A: Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong, is an ancient practice for mind and body, originating in pre-historic China. The practice involves some slow, gentle movements and a meditation...
It's being cracked down on by China because of its spiritual nature.
It has absolutely nothing to do with spamming. -
Re:Falun Gong a dangerous
Falun Gong is not a religion, people of any religion can practice it. Nor is it a political movement, there is no political agenda in the teachings of Falun Gong. It is a cultivation practice which is based on peaceful exercises, meditation, and centres on the cultivation of your heart and mind.
The core principles of Falun Gong are Truth, Benevolence and Compassion, and it has received recognition from world leaders and government representatives as being a great benefit to society, including proclamations from over 300 cities in the US. It's founder Li Hongzhi was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the last three years.
Some proclamations from world leaders: Proclamations
There are over 70 million practitioners in China alone (the official figure from the Chinese Government), and over 100 million worldwide. Practitioners in China are being persecuted basically because leaders of the communist party became concerned that the number of people practicing Falun Gong outnumbered the members of the Communist party.
In 1999 Falun Gong was outlawed and since then over 100,000 practitioners have been illegally detained and over 400 practitioners have died from torture (official Chinese government figure - the total figure is estimated at ever 1600). Six months ago orders were passed which allowed police officers to shoot a practitioner "on-sight" for putting up a Falun Gong poster in public.
Crimes committed against Falun Gong practitioners include police brutality, illegal detention, illegal sentencing, rape, brutal torture and murder. The following link contains news about the persecution: Falun Info Net
In our countries of freedom and democracy, we should not be celebrating the crimes against a group of people who are attepting to lead lives based on truth, compassion and forbearance. We should not be celebrating crimes of persecution, torture and murder.
I started practising Falun Gong six months ago and have found it to be very beneficial. I am writing this in a hope to shed some light on a poorly understood situation and true human rights crisis.
Kind Regards,
An IT guy and Australian Falun Gong practitioner.

Re:CIA: Damned if they do, damned if they don't
Do you know Fa Lun Da Fa is just the chinese version of Scientology?
Did you know that you are a fucking idiot?
Falun Dafa is more of a yoga than a religion. More importantly, unlike $cientology, everything is free. All the books are available for free online. All practice sites offer free tuition; all the teachers are volunteers. Hell if you are interested and there are no practioners in your country, others will fly to meet you at their own expense. Also unlike $cientology, practioners of Falun Dafa never attack anyone: even facing dath, dismemberment, an pain they never stray from their non-violent creed.
So exactly how is Falun Dafa a Chinese version of scientology?
The real reason China is putting the hurt on them is because the Chinese government sees as a threat any group that can organize and put people on the street. If the local LUG could quickly mobilize a few thousand nonviolent protesters in Bejing, the Chinese govt would probably start sending Linux geeks to prison labor camps.

Re:Ok, this article is confusing me.Sometimes I get the impression that Chinese lives are more important to the US government than the Chinese government.
Has anyone else been following the whole Falun Gong issue?
From what I can tell (I've never been to China, I get my news mainly from the BBC) it appears to be a calm, spiritual movement. Yoga-like in some ways, it emphasizes a peaceful approach. The Government is freaked out by the vast popularity of the movement, and has responded by making it illegal and by beating (and worse) protesters.
-
So what's new?
I mean just look at the Falun Gong bunch. I saw some material in the TV about them, they were waving their hands in a tai-chish way looking a bit stoned, passive, just minding their own business in a park or something. They were not bothering anyone.
Their website has some stuff like books about the essentials of Falun Gong. Mostly it seems like some semi-newage thing with science-can't-explain-all and third eyes and chakras revisited and everything. But these people are now hunted down because they choose to follow that philosophy while excercising. It's like doing Yoga. You either follow the guru/chakra/energy/whatnot phenomena-explanation-frontend or you don't. It's just a way of thinking which goes with the sport so to speak. The ideas of the Falun Gong gang do not seem to be "anti-government". Hunting them is just as absurd if the US goverment were tracking down Yoga practitioners and putting them to jail.
What I'm trying to say is that hindering access to the internet is a small potato for the government of the Peoples Republic of China. It's just one aspect they use in controlling the minds of the population. They've been doing it for a long time and probably keep on doing it for as long as the country holds together.
