What the Fark
is this doing on Slashdot? Shouldn't weird PSAs like this belong on other sites?

Illegal use of FARK cliché!
10 yard penalty; first down. -
Please Give Credit Where It Is DueFirst they try the vi. vs Emacs topic, now it's back to good old Microsoft bashing. Is this blog site really that desperate for post counts? Sad. I think I have to call it "News for Trolls, Flamebait that Matters".
And please give credit to fark.com, where 99% of these blog entry "articles" are ripped from.

Fark is a website
I think Fark would disagree.
FYI: Fark is yet another news site, with powers that possibly rival even the slashdot effect. -
Re:Is this a joke submission?
Ditch your Slashdot subscription and join TotalFark. It's actually worth it, since there is tons of content, not just oh-look-i-have-a-gold-star.
-
Re:broken already (it's lame)
The Slashdotting of his pathetic little box is probably enough, but if we want to get really nasty we can always fark him. Not that I'm advocating piling on even more pain on this astroturfing goof.. oh wait.. yes I am.

Re:FARK IS NOT A WORD
You're aware there's a popular website called fark, right? And this website is similar to slashdot in that it posts links to news articles and carries associated commentary? You're also aware that the rush of traffic from a newly posted link can wreak havoc on an unsuspecting website, much like slashdot? You're aware that the readers of fark refer to this effect as a "farking" or that a site that has been "farked", much like slashdot readers refer to a slashdotting and slashdotted? Your "pet peeve" is seriously misplaced.
-
dumbass.he was referring to a common phrase used on FARK, in which a link gets destroyed due to all the traffic going to it. this is commonly referred to as "being farked", akin to something "being slashdotted".
what really creeps me out is that not only do you have some weird science fiction meaning for that word, but it's a pet peeve of yours... -

It's quite strange...A couple of my friends are dial-up only and quite content. Actually, one of them is a JSP and Oracle guy, who works for the gov't. The really humorous part to me is that he has no knowledge of how computers *work*, but he is one hell of a programmer.
I also seem to notice that the friends without broadband seem to accomplish more and lead happier lives. Their lawns are not 8" tall all the time, the cars are always clean and they seem to keep a more tidy abode. Coincidence? Hmm...
Now where did I put that Slack ISO? Ahh, I'll just download it again. While I'm doing that, I might as well go check out Slashdot or Fark. My grass can wait 'til another day. Like I care what the neighbors think...
Thank God for broadband.

Hmmm...
For a second there I thought this was Fark. I was expecting to see a Florida tag.
-
Huh? Wrong turn there friend, fark's over...
...there. Have phun now.

Re:Questions for outsourcing opponents
Wages are relatively higher in the US than in India. That's a fact. If a manager decides to leave jobs in the US instead of outsourcing them, even after he determines it's clearly advantageous to outsource, then he's acting against his shareholder's interests. I characterized that as "artificially maintain[ing]" the US workforce.
But this is clearly turning out to be the opposite of what is happening. Companies are outsourcing without researching the impact and we are seeing pretty much the opposite. I would like to direct you to one of today's Fark Articles on the subject. So, to answer your initial question...
No, there isn't a duty to do that...because there doesn't have to be...the whole thing is just going to end up costing these companies more money in the long run...
Actually, this would raise our standard of living back here.
Oh, enlighten me as to how giving people less money and fewer protections and giving the government less money to do their job helps to raise the standard of living in the US???
What about question 6? (I guess you didn't really answer 1, 2, and 3 either, so whatever)
Umh, what did question 6 have to do with outsourcing??? Ok, I guess I'll say Bush, because if Castro really cared about his country then he would have stepped down from power after the Cuban missile crisis...but you probably have some reason why Castro is more just...and I really want to know what it is...
As for the other questions...
1) I guess I would say that a decision to move a job within the same country can be made for various reasons, but most all of them are perfectly acceptable to me, even greed...so, yes, it can be greed, but it can also be due to needs (for instance when a client moves their primary operations to another state)...none of the offshore outsourcing being done is for this reason...
2) Yes, people in China and India do have a right to make a living...but I would rather it not take food off my neighbor's table. -

April Fools?
Fark ran this on April 1st and I thought it was a joke. Joke's on me I guess; and you too... must be nice to make $125,000 per day. Of course the 200% raise they actors are looking for would be even nicer
:P -
Re:Full List of April Fools Web Sites
Fark.com and TotalFark are running about 10 different pranks, all randomized. Try refreshing the front page for a few minutes... it rotates through about 5 different pages, only one of which is the real one. h4x0r3d by gu1n3a p1g5! R0FL0L!!!111!
They also have a regex changing random people's comments into different dialects like pig latin, redneck.
There is also a random quote generator attached to some people's messages. -
The number you have reached...
I think you might be asking this in the wrong place. You want these folks.
Or am I the only one who thinks this sounds like a Photoshop contest?

Re:Is she single? Looking?
I'm still looking for the picture of her in leather and a shotgun strapped to her bike
In the grand tradition of Fark, have at it! -
Re:This inspires confidence...
Another angle to that is what it depends what he reads. If you read Slashdot every day, you're more likely to have strong anti-SCO opinions. But who knows what they're saying in Forbes? (who knows == I don't happen to).
And if you read fark every day, then you'd know it's a trap! -
Find passion
Seriously, find passion. If this is something you're passionate about, you'll make it work. You'll bring it into existence yourself. A lot of sites, like Slashdot to E2 to Fark to Neowin to Penny Arcade, all came into being because the creators were very passionate and put forth the effort themselves. It was important enough for them to be able to do it themselves and get through the initial lean years themselves.
What I'm trying to say is that it's a lot easier to walk away from something that you've had five people working on for two months rather than something you've worked on by yourself for ten months. -
Since when are graphics everything?
>>> Horrible pixellation is no longer fashionable
>> Then why are so many people trying to pirate and emulate the latest SNK fighting games?
> SNK games are not open source.
I recognized that SNK Playmore follows a proprietary software business model. I was giving an example of "horrible pixellation", running in a similar video mode to Quake 1, that is in fact fashionable. If 320-pixel-wide video modes are no longer fashionable, then what explains the success in both commercial and pirate circles of SNK titles that use such modes?
> and the kde games are not on the level that even Age of Empires was years ago.
Level of what? Do you seriously think more people play AoE style games than play solitaire? How would you suggest that one design and implement, say, a solitaire sim on a higher "level" as you put it than Kpatience? And it's true that 2D RTS games such as Stratagus are not as graphically sophisticated as the more recent 3D RTS games, but as the success of SNK games shows, since when are graphics everything? If graphics were everything, a version of Photoshop Elements specialized for turn-based image editing contests would be the hottest selling video game.

I like fark's headline best
Fark had the best headline for this:
"The Union of Concerned Scientists says the Bush administration manipulates and suppresses science. The administration points out that the Union of Bought and Paid for Scientists disagrees"

/. did me a favor by taking away my mod points when I modded the POD.
Now I don't mod. I don't metamod. MORE TIME FOR FARK! -
Re:Say it Ain't so!
Only on Slashdot would a comment about Alyson Hannigan be modded as "Insightful." We're all such geeks...
On Fark, Alyson's wedding was marked with a 'sad' tag.
We still have a way to go in our devolution.

No suprise here
I'm an Angel fan, but this was really no suprise. Some thoughts...
1) The writing for Angel recently hasn't been up to par with the Angel/Buffy tradition. The recent story line where they brought back that EVIL lawyer from the first season...meh. If they're not saving the world, then it ain't a Buffy/Angel story line.
For me, a recent low point arrived in the Cordelia return episode (two weeks ago). Angel tells her "It's not like I made a deal with the devil here" and then immediately turns to make lunch-date arragnements with a red-skinned, horned demon sporting a goatee. Give me a break.
2) All the actors in the Angel/Buffy series are talented and it would be great to see them move onto other projects. Actaully, yesterday I was thinking to myself that it would be cool to see James Marsters (Spike) have a role in some drama (not even a blockbuster - even a small, indie film). Now that they're not locked into the rough schedule of filming a TV show, it'll be possible.
Why isn't Nicholas Brendon (Xander) a star yet? Ditto for Amber Benson (Tara). It's a conspiracy, I tell ya!.
3) There are still dozens of hours of entertainment left for people who got to the series late:D I missed the first few years of Angel, so now I'll just watch it in syndication (did the same with Buffy on FX channel).
4) If everyone goes out and buys up all the Angel DVDs, maybe they'll resurrect the series (or a spin off) like they did with Family Guy?
5) Charisma Charpenter is going to be in Playboy later this year. Coming soon: Cordelia the Animated Series on SpikeTV. 'Nuff said. -
backlash ensued?
Is slashdot trying to imitate fark?. You should get some boobies and photoshops in as well.

Re:Laughable assertions
There's this guy I know from college who's written a free (as in beer) game for Windows. (Maybe you've heard of it; he also spends too much time on slashdot). Tens of thousands of windows users have downloaded it (according to webserver logs) and (presumably) run it on their machines, almost all of them (presumably) while logged in as administrator or equivalent. (At one point, it got farked, and is still getting referer hits from there)
Sure, you've found a patch of very trusting FreeBSD users. However, I'll bet that this one stupid windows game is downloaded and run with full privleges with no safety checks at all by a hundred times as many people. -
Re:If code is criminal, only criminals will have cBTW the server seems ve-wy slow to-day. I think we were just Farked.

Oh, and this deserves mirroring:

WHAT?? TO arms my fellow /.ers we must not let this go unpunished -
More important things
While I am excited by mankind's abilities to reach out into space and touch other planets, there are more immediate concerns.
One which I was made aware of yesterday, through a link on Fark, is Peak Oil, something which appears will make our worst Y2K nightmares look like pleasant fantasies.
This is scary stuff! Read the linked page, read the pages it references, think about it for a while, then tell your friends and loved ones. -
Re:Children's Shoes
I saw that on an X-Files episode once, but does it actually happen in real life? And if so, where can I get adult-sized light up shoes?
IIRC, it was real story on Fark. I didn't find it with a google.Maybe it was in regards to Juvenile-offender-sized shoes.

This article seems awfully familiar, yet it hasn't been posted on Slashdot yet. Hmm. Wonder why?
Oh yeah, because I read it on FARK.com YESTERDAY.
Oh, and the Slashdot article about the author of MyDoom signing the virus? Yup, FARK got there first. And yesterday's article about an e-mail spam solution involving postage fees? Once again, Slashdot is beaten to the punch by FARK.
News for Nerds? Yeah, that's there.
But Stuff that Matters? Apparently it doesn't matter enough to post it before it hits the FARK front page.
If you want geek news, read Slashdot.
If you want timeliness and compentent administraton, read FARK. -

Re:Call me crazy...
It depends. If you're on Fark, then yes, it is pretty easy to see if a picture has been modified. If a professional does the work, it is much much harder, probably even impossible.
