Web 3.11 for Workgroups
Web 2.x is soo yesterday. You really should opt for Web 3.11 for Workgroups: Blink-attributes for headings, Matrix-style marquee for paragraphs, and of course, all images automatically converted to animated gifs. And NO SHITTY CSS, just pretty font tags and lots of nice nested tables. It's like, well, Wheee!
PS. This new CSS on
/. is awesome :) -
Yeah they learned from their mistakes...
...this time they are making completely new ones.
Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii -
Re:Doesn't work
I have one word for you: Wheee!

Wheee!
Nintendo should hire this guy for their commercials.

may I reply with:

Whee!!!
It certainly destroys it: Wheee!!!

And might I be the first to say

Re:Honestly...
True. That's also why even though I think that Smells Terrific is great and quite funny most people won't get it. Then again most people wouldn't get most of what Olde English produces either.

Re:Analysis
I agree with most of your analysis of what was picked. The winners were kinda boring, kinda unprofessional, compared to some of the others.
My favorites were:
- This is Hot - for the 3-D animation
- Briefcase Syndicate - for the acting and the transitions in the music. The guerilla fans were kinda cool, though maybe not the best image for Firefox
- Upgrade - Most professional, good music, simple
- Give Me the Soap - for the kids, dad is kinda lame
- Smells Fantastic - It's just so bizarre, would work (imagine seeing that during the Super Bowl)

Re:Sadly "The Painter" did not win....
I've got to say, IMHO, The Painter was the most professional and most "ready for TV" ad in the entire lot (I watched all over them rated with 3 or better stars).
It's a simple message (grandma doesn't understand "viruses," "security," "pop-ups," etc.), it's got great music. It "just works" for the non-technical masses.
Of course, if you're marketing to the TechTV crowd, you need something a bit different and can use all the buzzwords.
I thought the Xraalthraal and John was kinda funny too (could use a bit better acting). -
SmellsTerrific
SmellsTerrific is rather funny as well.

joke of a contest
This contest was more of a joke than the jokes in the SNL that's on right now... Here
They got rid of there blog(Here) after a lot of the entrants posted "comments" questioning what happened to it. Read the comments on that page to see the problems but here's a sum up of what the general story is:
Facts:
-Before I say anything about the videos this is how the contest was to be done (Herel)1) Concept (30%); 2) Production Quality (30%); 3) Script/Screenplay (20%); 4) Use of Firefox Logo, Name, or Tagline (10%); 5) Jingle or Soundtrack (10%). The winners were all in the first 20% of the videos posted. Only around 30% of the ads have been posted.
-The winner of the competition "Daredevil" was posted online Apr. 11th on the firefoxflicks.com website...the contest ended Apr. 14th. This ad incorporates ALMOST NONE of the guidelines set forth other than the fact that she actually uses a browser. (And it's a clear of the recent coca-cola and American express ads... that's more of a rumor though but you decide for yourself)
-"Wheee!" was in complete denial of the FAQ that they posted (specifically Here) that said that other logos could not be used without permission and yet there goes IE, Netscape and Safari(not to mention the TOS on those logos on there websites(which can also includes modifying the logos in any way))
-"Fox Fever" had no video production quality other than that is was trying to be cheesy which can be argued to have not fallen under the scoring system set forth by the rules.
-"This is Hot" deserved to win more than an honorable mention. It fit the "rules" set forth perfectly and has a very high production quality that (in my opinion) can take on some super bowl commercials.
-"Give Me the Soap" was cute and could fit the rules perfectly.
-It starts to appear that the actual "winners" were not exactly following the rules and guidelines of the contest and the two honorable mentions fit it perfectly (which is probably why there were 2 "honorable mentions" because there wasn't any mention that there was going to be).
Rumors:
-I'll quote myself for the first "rumor":
"the only concern I have about the judging is that the 5 winners were among the first 25% up... I'm not to good at stat but doesn't that mean the odds of that happening unintentionally (5 hits within 25%) 1 in 1024(4^5) (or one could even argue 20% (5^5: 1 in 3125))? If the first ones up were a "cross-section" as noted earlier doesn't that imply that they weren't the best of the best? ...sorry if that was a bit confusing

cleancut, I don't think it was purely our idea of "the 50 best ones". We posted what we thought was a good cross-section of ads, from humorous to serious and everything in between. We certainly tried to launch the site and build early momentum by highlighting a set of ads that we thought would be compelling and entertaining to a broad audience.

-NONE of the judges ever said a word about the contest ANYWHERE. try googling one the famous "judges" names and firefoxflicks and the only page that will come up is that the list of them on firefoxflicks.com. This lead to ALOT of speculation that some of the videos (Wheeeeeeeee) were picked because of the instant popularity when they were put on the site and not by market viability (or the "rules"). Also all of the judges apparently viewed all 2.5 hours of commercials in LA over 5 days even though they are all working on movies in various parts of the world. But that's probably because the firefoxflicks team forced them to this deadline to be at the SF film fest which wasn't the original plan.

Re:Innacurate
Hi Berger,
I appreciate the nod. Richter made a similar comment on the post itself. I attempted to respond with the following about an hour ago, but it seems it didn't make it past the moderation filter, so here it is:
"Hi Richster,
I'm not sure either. My post on Firefox Religion from this time last year did mention Ben. But to be fair, Ben's article does begin with a discussion of perspectives :) Sour grapes don't help anything, and like others here, I enjoyed this article as a persuasive essay on why software engineering doesn't have to be as dispassionate as most people think.
I haven't lost interest in Firefox by a long shot, but coding-wise I prefer to work in leaps and bounds in small teams on fledgling products. Firefox no longer fits that profile--which is mostly a good thing! So I've been working with Joe Hewitt (another of the original Firefox guys) on a new project that will complement Firefox.
I think when we release, it will become clear that I never actually strayed too far from the fox. But I also know that the kinds of things we're working on could never be achieved--or achieved quickly enough, at least--if attempted in a project that has grown as large and mature as Firefox. Thus, our new project is in many ways a realization of where I would take Firefox today were it still as pliable (and thus immature) as 2 years ago.
Given that there are only two of us on the project right now, it consumes about all the coding time I can muster...so I allocate my Firefox time on SpreadFirefox and its campaigns, such as our newest, Firefox Flicks.
Thanks,
Blake"
