You can't just buy an add-on device for HDCP, it has to be right inside the monitor, because the data stream must be encrypted right until it reaches the pixels.

That's what they want you to think. In reality it's untrue - flaws were discovered with HDCP's encryption in 2001 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDCP#Cryptanalysis) and you can buy devices that strip the encryption and give you a plain HDMI/DVI output.

It's not quite that magical. A two inch layer of aerogel will keep things about as insulated as a really good vacuum thermos, however.

I know, I work with the stuff on a regular basis, we use it as insulation, by the 400 liter barrel. See some of my pics of some of the solid slabs I have in the office.

No, I don't use FF. I use Konq, Safari, and Opera, and have tested only them on Acid2 myself. Whenever I'm using FF or IE, I'm on someone else's computer.

Oh, and of course you heard of and used web 2.0 sites before anyone called them web 2.0. Think about it. Tim O'Reilly didn't sit around and think, hmm, let's come up with something we could call web 2.0. What would it be? And then went and made a bunch of people start implementing his ideas. It is descriptive, and the term to describe something (as happens pretty much always with history) came after that which is described. There had to be a web 2.0 before anyone could recognize it as something different from what came before and name it.

When we first got a TV (1988), the TV had a power switch, five channels and definitely no remote. So, whenever we didn't need the TV, we just switched off the power and turned it on when we needed it.

When 1999 dawned, the TV was a flat screen 25" with a remote. And lo, we would turn off the power for the TV only when we left the house (locked up) or at night. And that was just because my house was on the very top of a hill and power lines were often hit by lightning (yeah, I had my modem explode once).

And finally, now in 2006 (in a different city), I have six things plugged in - from DVD player to the TV itself. And it is such a big mess that nobody ever unplugs anything at all - just use the remote to turn it on & off. That sleep mode does take a fair bit of power (well, tens of watts) which is just going to an absolute waste (well, heating the room).

It is these un-noticed devices which suck a constant, but econonomically neglible drain - which could be avoided. The things you can fix aren't always the biggest consumers (water heaters, refrigerator) but small things like these - in a global level.

It is not just such permanently on stuff that you have - the average geek still has more connectors than you'd think. I realized this when I was in the high himalayas - and we were charging stuff before we left human habitation. (Oh, took the laptop to 18,000 feet).

You can also put that onto an unlimited amount of iPods and burn it to CD's, even. I don't know movies since I'm in Canada and we don't have a movie store as of yet, but I find the music DRM to be quite alright. I remember using WMP on my windows computer a few years ago, when I transfered my library to iTunes I discovered that WMP had plastered DRM on all the songs I had ripped from CD. iTunes does NOT apply DRM to ripped mp3's.

I use Opera 9 and most pages work if not all, and it's the best browser out there being small download and memory footprint, fastest, least security issues (well, lynx and whatnot might have less, but fewer than IE, firefox and Safari.), very portable and the most innovative one.

It also passes Acid2 test, something firefox doesn't do so well and IE 6 totally messes up. Don't expect IE 7 to do any better either.

Shouldn't the two most important things with a webpage be that it's:
1) Informative and contain anything useful at all (That leaves out most of the blogs and myspace.)
2) Actually usable (No browser specific stuff, flash and similair shit and easy to navigate.)

Ultimately, they terminated me for downloading more than 100G a month,and I had to find a new provider, and pay several hundred dollars in startup fees. They also tried to bribe me into silence with the $300 early termination fee.

Ooh, good call on the Cadex! I'm cheap, so I'm settling for the LaCrosse BC-900 battery analyzer, which has completely changed the way I think about my batteries. Using rechargeables without one of these is like driving without a gas gauge or speedometer.

I dropped my dad's Raytek IR thermometer a year back, and replaced it with a Tempgun PE-2 for half the price. I picked up a PE-1 for myself at the same time, and it's addictive. Being non-contact, I use it in the kitchen all the time, but the more important aspect is that it reads instantly. Hard drive warm? Point and know. CPU heatsink temperature difference between center and edge? Point, point, and know. I'm much too impatient for contact-based thermometers, and the IR thing is a boon.

You can build an adjustable DC load testing bank with any random set of giant transistors. Sometimes you'll find driver boards in surplus outfits that're just begging to be modded thusly.

One more thing no lab should be without is a good camera, or two or three. I carry a 5MP Canon for everyday shooting, but there's an old USB Vicam (aka 3Com HomeConnect Camera, aka Digi IONetworks Watchport/V) on the bench that comes in surprisingly handy. It was five bucks at a fleamarket so I don't hesitate to do things like record arcs and sparks with it, and it'll focus right down to its nose if you spin the lens really far out. Comes in handy for silly electronics closeups that're sort of difficult to see with the unaided eye. I should have a microscope for these things, but the camera's small and versatile.

The Flickr service makes it possible to post images hosted on Flickr to outside websites. This use is accepted (and even encouraged!). However, pages on other websites which display images hosted on flickr.com must provide a link back to Flickr from each photo to its photo page on Flickr.

I have the same issue with "VoN (Video on the Net)." Nobody calls online video distribution "VoN," do they? The closest to that I've actually seen is the term "net video."
