Re:A simple case of the wrong error..
Not to mention the catch-all that I see from a lot of programs when anything at all goes slightly differently that the way the developer expected:
Segmentation violation (core dumped)
(Technically, it's the shell that prints that, not the program.)
On the flip side, when I worked at HP supporting HP-UX, I once saw a particular kernel error message. It was four lines long, and said very clearly, "so-and-so error has occurred. You probably need to increase the such-and-such parameter. You can do this by..."
I tracked down the guy that committed that message and promised to buy him a case of beer if he was ever in town.

Re:My Story
Dude... the people on FreeBSD mailing lists are usually friendly & helpful. Just be reasonable when asking for help, that's all: they're volunteers, don't waste their time on stupid questions. The FreeBSD Handbook has a whole section on the X system. I suggest you read it, THEN ask if you still have problems.
But, on the basis of who you are (and I don't know that. But I just got a feeling...), there might be another solution: switching to Linux.
Mandrake, to be precise. :-D -
Examining hot geek babes...
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Please show your support for Ceren in this poll of Geek Babes!
Is it any wonder people think Linux users are a bunch of flaming homosexuals when its fronted by obviously gay losers like these?! BSD has a mascot who leaves us in no doubt that this is the OS for real men! If Linux had more hot chicks and gorgeous babes then maybe it would be able to compete with BSD! Hell this girl should be a model!
Linux is a joke as long as it continues to lack sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. Don't you wish the guy in this pic was you? Are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?! Wouldn't this just make your Christmas?! Yes doctor, this uber babe definitely gets my pulse racing! Oh how I envy the lucky girl in this shot! Linux has nothing that can possibly compete. Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Wouldn't this be more liklely to influence your choice of OS?
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!
Don't be a fag! Join the campaign for more cute open source babes today!

etcmerge - mergemaster replacementI find mergemaster to be a pain. It force the user to do manual merge between files because it retains too little history, and that's always annoyed me (because I knew there is a better way.)
To scratch that itch, I've written a replacement that works on full directories, and use so-called 3-way merges. This means that it retains a copy of the unmodified
/etc from the install point, and use that to automate the entire prosses. The replacement is available from /usr/ports/sysutils/etcmergeIn case you did not take a backup of
/etc before the installer got to do any mods (and who does?), I've made tarballs of the reference etc directories for a series of releases available from http://people.freebsd.org/~eivind/etc/.Feel free to mail me with any questions about it etc.

Turns out that *BSD is stronger than ever!
According to an Inernetnews article, Netcraft has confirmed that *BSD has "dramatically increased its market penetration over the last year."
There has been a steady increase in *BSD developers over the past decade.
There are currently 307 FreeBSD developers as of the 2004 core team election.

Welcome LinuxWelcome, Tux, to the Land of the Dead.
Nice to have some company.

Looks like there's still a lot to do.
Based on their todo list, it looks like there's still a lot that needs to be done before 5.3 is even close to out-the-door.

Re:Upgrading from 5.2.1 to 5.3-BETA1 a little bumpor you could use mergemaster -p before the buildworld.
-p Pre-buildworld mode. Compares only files known to be essential to the success of {build|install}world, including

Re:Not going to happen.
b) Somebody strip out or rewrite all parts of the kernel copyrighted by people who objected to the license change, which in the end would probably amount to an effective rewrite of the whole thing.
And if you're going to rewrite the Linux kernel under the BSD license, you might as well look into any one of the several already-mature, BSD-licensed operating systems that exist. Honestly, there's no need to relicense Linux, unless you're concerned about buzzword-compatability issues. Why reinvent *BSD? -

dummynet
FreeBSD has dummynet; I'd guess OpenBSD has something similar.

Re:The correct pricing structure for most software
If all software was free, why would anyone bother developing it?
Gee, I can't think of anyone who would develop software without getting paid for it...
But seriously, there are several reasons people would write software whose price is 0:
- People want better software to do $WHATEVER (for values of $WHATEVER that make money, which is most of them), so they write it
- People want to get a job as a programmer so they write a software package to prove they aren't total code monkeys
- People like fame; they like being admired and appreciated
- An industry consortium decides they need an open, standard, free way to do $WHATEVER
- Some people have a political motivation to undermine proprietary software (we may not have that same motivation; but it is a real driving force for some people)
- Some people like to help others (ditto)
- Your company might want to make your product universally (or nearly so) used in order to be able to charge money for training, certification, etc.
- I mentioned 15 high-profile products that are competitive with best-of-breed and are available for $0 (and not all of it is Free as in speech). All of them were written because one of the above bullet points (or one I forgot) applied.
There are lots of motivations for people's actions besides money.

Re:Actually...
Because of the extensive use of Linux in shell hosting enviroments Linux is fairly robust against local exploits. Windows is still terribly weak to local privlage escilation.
You're really wrong about this. Linux has a terrible record for local root exploits, due to flaws in the kernel itself. In order to keep your systems secure you had better be upgrading your kernel on average about every 2 months. Many of the root privilege escalations are trivial to carry out... this is an embarassment to Linux. Now, Linux is popular in web hosting packages but that's because people like to see the word Linux, not necessarily because it's secure.
Web hosting companies could easily lag for a day or two when new exploits are published, leaving plenty of time to get root. I'd venture to guess that you would have a couple of easy root opportunities a year.
Linux is still a more secure kernel than Microsoft's NT, but not significantly. For security I trust FreeBSD or OpenBSD.

One time pad
I personally think an implementation of a one-time pad is a rather secure way to go. If someone does happen to capture your unecrypted PW, so what. The same PW is only used once. I will be implementing this on my FreeBSD box soon. If interested, here are the basics on how to do this with FreeBSD.

Re:Does BSD have a pre-emptive kernel?
Yes, "BSD" has a pre-emptive kernel. BSD/OS has a pre-emptive kernel. BSDi was bought by Walnut Creek and they are providing a snapshot of their code to the FreeBSD team who is using some of the BSDi team's work to make their own kernel pre-emptive, as well. Please see "Revamping the BSD multiprocessor code" at http://www.daemonnews.org/200008/dadvocate.html
You can also see a good argument against it, dating back to 2000 from Matt Dillon:
"I would not characterize this as 'biting the bullet'. Having a preemptive kernel is unlikely to improve performance. The only reason there might be preemption at all is to deal wth interrupts. Interrupts currently preempt supervisor code. If interrupts are moved to interrupt threads then interrupt threads would need to be able to preempt supervisor code. In this fashion the supervisor thread would be preempted, but that is very different from having supervisor threads preempt other supervisor threads (something we probably will not do)."
See http://docs.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=65989 +0+archive/2000/freebsd-arch/20000528.freebsd-arch
Actually, the whole discussion is very interesting and I have learned a lot this morning about SMP and preemption and so on from reading. Thanks for bringing this up. :) -

Yeah...
Yup. On my BSD machines I only use linux binaries for a few applications - flash is the only thing that comes to mind. Actually, the first thing that came to mind when i read that was FreeBSD's linuxulator. I wonder if sun used any code from FreeBSD's solution or not. Not that there's anything wrong with that...just a curiosity.

Re:FreeBSD Daemon
Read this and this.
In short, to BSD users your argument is laughably silly and makes you look like an ignoramus.
I may be wrong, but I honestly think that most reasonable people will not interpret a cartoonish picture of a devil-like creature wearing sneakers as any indication of satan worship
I myself have walked into my church (I'm Catholic) wearing a FreeBSD daemon shirt. -
"Bad" CF or Bad OS?I had a 8 MB flash card (free "rebate" type deal from Kodak), that appeared to fail.
I could not do anything with it in the camera or my Windows box. Couldn't even format it.
When the PC with the CF reader in it finally got a real OS put on it, I gave it another shot and was able to resurrect it.
Although with my current camera, 8 MB only holds 1 or 2 images. I use it mostly as a "reserve tank". If I put that card in I have to go from the "it's digital, shoot everything" mode to "save your last bullet" mode.
