On the other hand many OSS projects get along generally well and freely steal each others good ideas and code(e.g. FreeBSD and NetBSD).

This is not their first brush with open source. After acquiring BSDi, they encouraged BSD/OS users to move to FreeBSD, than dropped support entirely (or rather. they transferred FreeBSD sponsorship to FreeBSD MALL). Anyway, the point is, that back then, when this announcement [slashdot.org] was made, I saw the usual argument of BSD licence being more "liberal" than GPL. It seems that this might not be the case after all.

FreeBSD has sandbox infrastructure called "jail". The idea is to sandbox all services so that an exploits can't escalate itself into root.

Note that this is different from the name being inserted into the CVS tree -- 5.2-BETA is now available for installation via all the usual mechanisms (ISO image, FTP install, etc), without requiring a preexisting system.

BSD kernels are unencumbered by System V legacy code, copyright and control - which is basically why Apple's OS X isn't a licensee of SCO's UNIX copyright.

I love the fact that when mentioning free UNIX only Linux gets a mention. This is despite the fact that a huge swathe of ISPs run some sort of *BSD for hosting, security, firewalls, etc.

Not only are they free in both senses of the word but there is no viral GNU license which obliges derivative works from adhering to the license.

If GNU is challenge and Linux destroyed then it will only delay the pervasiveness of "free" Unicies - IBM et al will simply adopt a BSD kernel. BSD kernels were created for the specific tasks of removing the old AT&T/System V licensed code!

However you're right: a strong selling point in convincing the public sector in EU-land to switch to Linux is that revenues will flow back into the EU rather than outside.

Another important point is that the US are being currently perceived in large parts of Europe, but also in many third world countries as, how should I put it, acting rather strangely w.r.t. human rights and abidance by [intl.] laws. Please don't get me wrong here: this is not my personal opinion, but it is very widespread out there.

The general scepticism against US policy translates in (most often) irrational fears about "spyware." M$ had presumably a record of cooperating with the NSA, helping them install backdoors in M$'s crypto libraries: CCC press release (sorry, only in german).
