Re:Gentoo
Gentoy is for ricers. You're being tarred with the same brush as all the fucking wannabe pricks who don't know a CFLAG from a whole in the heads. Get out quick, before the stupid infects you, too.

Watching compiler output is learning?
Off to Funroll Loops with you!

Re:Neat
Because it's the latest version, duh! Remember, if you're running Slackware 9 on a Pentium III 2600MHz with 512MB of RAM, you are so five minutes ago. Part of the thing about being a certain type of geek is that you must have the latest versions of everything, and must be able to spend all day telling your friends how you upgraded to the latest Perl last night, and you're looking forward to some of the new features on the latest point-point release of Python tonight that you plan to download and compile yourself, preferably with -funroll-loops, on your shiny Gentoo box.

Re:Gentoo topic icon?
How about a persistent link to funroll-loops.org

Re:Hmm...
If it is Gentoo based it should be called Ricedows.

Re:Yea, and?
heh or darwin ports
the volume goes to 11... -
Re:Pudge...
Gentoo users smart?

Re:Mono
Isn't portage the stuff where the source is downloaded and then compiled? Sorry, but this is way too time-consuming. Why spend significant amounts of time for compiling when your Linux distributor can do that for you. And no, "optimized" compilations (like many Gentoo people do them) usually don't have any measurable performance improvements.

Re:Easier R upgrade
A racing stripe and vtec sticker help too.

Gentoo is for ricers

HAHAHA Gentoo

Re:They should have used Gentoo
Yeah, like -funroll-loops.

Re:NOT OT - Wake Up!
What's kind of ironic is that I even have a bit of code in the Linux kernel, and I maintain parts of a number of widely used open source applications. I hope whoever modded me down never needs help with any of it
:) Oh well, probably a Gentoo user anyway. It will probably get looked it in meta-mod and severly hurt this guy's ability to moderate again anyway, so no big deal. -
Speaking of Gentoo ;-)

Re:Comparison between Debian and Gentoo?
One thing to keep in mind is the community of users that come with Gentoo..
-
Me also
I also use the gentoo with the xfce4. I can't wait for the xfce 4.2, it is teh hotness. If you haven't tried xfce4 I suggest you at least take it for a spin. Imagine a lightweight GTK based window manager that has everything you need and nothing you don't. Anything it doesn't supply, you must provide by using other linux programs (xbindkeys, devilspie, etc.). It is also super fredesktop.org standards compliant. It's really great because all of your programs interoperate in the standard linux way as opposed to all of them needing to be built with kde/gnome support.
Rather than risk repeating what everyone else said I must say this. The distros that most people use like RedHat, Mandrake and Suse are like big american SUV cars. They have everything, which is also more than anyone needs. Gentoo however is for ricers which is what I am. I get a small, efficient foreign car and I customize to fit me like a glove. No extras, nothing missing. If you don't believe it then this monthly thread will convince you. -
Re:Answer
There already is a "Type R" desktop. Gentoo is for ricers.
-
Re:Nothing left for Modders
So what you're saying is: Does the new PowerMac run (Gentoo) Linux?
-
Pointless question.
You guys have painted yourself in a corner. You say that Linux is cheaper than windows, but when you consider the time spent trying to get broken libraries, drivers, and programs to work, you're wrong. I paid $90 for my OEM copy of Windows XP, and that was three years ago. That averages to nine cents per day.
Now, as far as a *server* is concerned, Linux is usually a better choice. Until Linux is easier to use than Windows, it's not going to put a dent in desktop marketshare. So, if you *really* want that marketshare, you'll stop being ricers and start developing a UI on top of the kernel that
1) makes it easy to install/remove programs, and provides an easy way to run Windows executables.
2) makes it easy to install/remove web plugins, like flash.
3) makes it easy to install/remove drivers.
4) provides a sane way to manage libraries.
If you can't manage these simple tasks that are the basis for the existence of an operating system, then how in the hell do you expect to get any customers? -
Re:Okay, a question...

And this means
Free, untaxable, funroll-loops for the rest of us!

I always suspected as much...Gentoo is for Ricers
"Welcome, this page is dedicated to the Linux Community's greatest ambassadors, Gentoo users. Like the annoying teenager next door with a 90hp import sporting a 6 foot tall bolt-on wing, Gentoo users are proof that society is best served by roving gangs of armed vigilantes, dishing out swift, cold justice with baseball bats to those fucking ricer bastards."
