Re:Good!
You really sure "flashlight on gun" was considered a secret tactic?

Re:Light? What annoyed me most was the "No Duct Tape on Mars?" concept. If you're striving for photo-realistic horror, then at least give players the opportunity to be able to see something. Or shoot. Maybe both?
This is an ingenious mod. Seriously - in my view, the main reason Doom 3 was such a poor game was the fact that you could see *nothing* without the flashlight. Who cares about the super new graphics engine if you're barely given an opportunity to take a look at the environment?

Strokeit and Trip
I find stroke-it to be invaluable after some jigging of the default settings. It's a mouse-gesture recognition system, and can be configured to do just about anything (although I mainly use it for open browser, open explorer and close window.
I also use trip regularly, but I wrote it, so I'm quite biased.

Unpopular opinion
The funny thing about comparing operating systems is that frequent users of each OS are blind to the failings of their own, and are driven insane by the failings of others. For example, I find scrolling in even the latest OSX to be painful, but I love it on Windows. People get driven nuts by explorer pausing when it tries to find things that aren't there, but I don't notice it and instead go batty when Finder wastes time panning to the right in column view.
On Windows, I have a small set of utilities (notably strokeit, trip* and remote desktop) that I rely on heavily, and while other platforms have their equivalents, I just don't find them anywhere near as good (remote desktop, in particular).
Now don't get me too wrong - I would rather use default OSX over default Windows, but give me a customised Windows, and I'll take it over any other OS. It's the same reason I use an IE shell (iRider) over FireFox - one may be the technically 'better' solution, but the other just does exactly what I need it to, and lets me do it faster.
I guess my point is the obvious - people are most productive in whatever they're used to, and whatever suits them.

Doom 3 Engine
It would of been nice if the game wasn't so dark.
I mean, wasn't there duct tape in the future? -
Re:*rubs hands together*
ever download Duct Tape?
Just thought I'd letcha know in case you didn't. ;p

Re:Oh, look -- the lights went out! It's funny, the internet is such a "big place", but I keep running in to the same people everywhere. Once again, I run in to Doug (who I've never actually met, but "hi" anyway from a fellow Austinite.
More of the `the lights went out! I'll bet I'm about to be attacked!' brilliance. Joy.
I'm actually enjoying Doom 3, but I would have hated it if I didn't download the ducttape mod.
You want a creepy FPS? System Shock 2.
Agreed. More than once I cracked my head on the wall trying to dodge something that startled me in SS2. And the creepy audio logs.... wow.

Re:Flashlight or gun?Hah, you've obviously never played Duct-tape mod!
And, I quote:
Under the crazy presumption that a roll of duct tape has to exist somewhere on the Mars facility, the Duct Tape mod sticks flashlights to your machinegun and shotgun.
Imho, duct-tape is the universal tool for any geek. -

Doom 3 Duct tape (flashlight) mod
There's a mod for D3 to "duct tape" your flashlight to SOME of your weapons. From the dude's site:
Under the crazy presumption that a roll of duct tape has to exist somewhere on the Mars facility, the Duct Tape mod sticks flashlights to your machinegun and shotgun. In order to preserve the atmosphere, these new lights are much narrower (and a little brighter) than the standard flashlight, and are only available on the basic weapons. The pistol is not equipped with a flashlight, so as not to spoil the early sections of the game.

Trip
If you want to access your quicksearches* even faster, I humbly submit a super early version of Trip, which lets Windows users enter URLs without having to wait for a browser to open, or having to use their mouse to select an input field (which, even if it takes half a second, is half a second too long).
Impatient people who like to optimise things seem to find it useful, others don't.
* FireFox doesn't allow launching quicksearches from external apps, whereas IE does, so Trip implements quicksearches itself.
