From reading all these comments, it's pretty obvious that a lot of you still have no clue what Islam is and the how truly fanatical it's followers are. I grew up in a muslim country and have had many muslim friends that explained to me that what it is and it is based on complete faith where questioning it is not allowed and if you're not a muslim, you must convert or die ( sooner or later) and muslims will pretend to be your friend until that time comes. I kid you not.

I quit the dotcom consultancy business (such as it was) in 2000 and got hired by one of the aforementioned company's biggest clients to do work for them at home...still working for them so they must like me or something. I also run a startup for media distribution with two partners. My typical schedule is 10AM-6AM (with a break from 6PM to 9PM) . Every day. For years. Do a trip into the city once a fortnight for meetings and dope replenishment, but otherwise...stare at 6 big flatscreens all day, all night.

My sanity prescription.... You need analog to balance the digital.

My Analog side:

1) Spend at least an hour or two a day with wife/kids eating dinner, watching something on Tivo.

2) When I feel the stress building up to, say, Level 5, I go do the back roads by the reservoir at 130 mph in my M3. It's worth the payments, and gets rid of all that pesky adrenalin. (Take Bondurant or Skip Barber course first so you don't, like die doing this.)

3) Find a local gun range and buy a Glock or H&K 9mm. I'm not advocating carrying it: leave it at the range (almost all have lockers for rent, my guns are all at the range except for cleaning and I have no ammo at home), but nothing cures Level 8 Client Stress like 300 rounds down at the range. It's very Zen (you need total concentration on safety and breath control to get good at precision shooting) , and you will get very good, very quickly. It is really fun and totally de-stressing. Not expensive either, you'd be surprised how cheap it is to get a used 9mm or 22 and enough weekly ammo to suck all the adrenalin out of your blood.

Bonus big fun is interacting with all the gun guys at the range, and seeing how the other side thinks. I see guys there who carry 4-5 concealed weapons on themselves at all times (legal in my state, Connecticut.) I see guys teaching ten year old kids to shoot 22 rifles at Saddam and Osama targets telling them "go for the forehead!!!" You realize at that point how far you are from SCO discussions.

I promise, by the time you get back to your geeky home office, your mind will have been somewhere far away for hours.

4) Find a paintball field near you. Fit in an hour every month to go play. It's very analog and highly addictive.

5) Hey! You work for yourself: take two long vacations every year with your family. We do a beach trip (Caribbean usually) in April, and Disneyworld the week after Thanksgiving for 12 days..every year. Gives you something to look forward to, and ensures you will get to see your kids grow up.

Works for me! See if I'm working.

think it's OK to exploit a game. If there's a loophole, sooner or later everyone will know about it. Although that may be later closed by the game's developer, it's not like someone has unfair advantage. That's in the rules. If the rules change, well, that's OK because everyone is affected by it. Much like the "grenades through walls" in Counter-Strike. I also think it's OK if it's an inside, official cheat. I don't think this exists in online games, but if it exists, then it should be used. It's like it were in the rules.

but what exactly is cheating and isn't? I know players who in unreal tournament would turn off certain gun effects and explosions to get an unfair advantage. Others would manipulate lighting, or make up crazy binds that would dodge for them. Is it cheating if someone has a better video card than you and that gives them an advantage? That is the problem with *serious* online gaming on the PC. The platform is too open, and there are too many variations on what people are actually seeing and doing. There is no "level" playing field when everyone is running at different framerates, have different amounts of bandwith, etc. The PC isn't ment for this type of thing. I hope eventually we will see a console (not based on the PC) that is ment for playing online games seriously, where everyone has the same hardware, and gamecode being hard to hack is taken seriously by the programmers.

As long as you are on a PC, cheating will always be a part of any game. The PC is simply too open, not to be hacked for fun never mind if real money is going to be involved someday.

Hacking consoles is harder, especially if they are obscure hardware. It does happen though.

I hate to say this, but I think micro$oft has a good solution with the x-box. They have your credit card number and all of your information. If you cheat they throw you off the network. I have yet to see anyone I would suspect of cheating on xbox live(although there are plenty of people who exploit glitches). If anyone has any info about such things, do tell :)

We deal with cheaters by banning the wonid they play on, almost 99% of cheaters do not come back on when we have banned their WonID. There are cheaters who have many serial keys (therefore they have many WonIDs), but this doesnt matter to us. They may beleive they can come back on and cheat once again but the ban isnt by a peice of software monitoring wonid's its by a person and a person can not be circumvented. If their banned, their banned. We report bans to each other through the forums we use, therefore all of the admins know of specific player names that have been banned.

And what happens if they use different names? I play CS once in awhile just for fun, and I make up different nicknames all the time. I don't play seriously (it's a game folks!), just for fun. Now how are you going to ban me? If you are naive enough to think you can always detect a cheater, post your server address and I'll re-install CS and pay you a visit sometime soon :)

I've been playing games all my life, and I'm 27. I play because I enjoy it.

There is plenty of skill behind my game, actually. Before making my aimbot I played for #1 on the OGL (Online Gamers League) 1 on 1 ladder. I was ranked #1 statistically at CTF, DM and Mods (when I played on Heat.net). at different points.

I made my first Unreal Tournament bot after I thought someone on the OGL ladder cheated me in a match and I noticed some people who could never touch me before in one on ones suddenly could aim well. Only with hitscan (ie sniper rifle) weapons of course.

I released the aimbot because I wanted Epic (the company that made UT) to address the problem. I figured if I released the aimbot, they would have to patch it. Then I could play in peace. This never happened.

Around the same time, I got sick of all of the "clannies". The majority of people who play FPS games online are racist, lying, morons with few social skills. Maybe this is just what I have made the misfortune of dealing with, or maybe its true.

So what did I do? Epic didn't patch UT, I pretty much ruined the game, and 90% of the people who played annoyed me.

What I did was I made a new nickname "NoClanNeeded" and an anti-clan called C4E (Campers 4 Ever). I figured I would become act like the biggest "clannie" of them all. I cheated, whined, complained, camped, held servers, release new cheats, etc.

The sad part is, while people hated me at first, a lot of them loved me! NoClanNeeded was, and still is way more popular than any other name I've played under. To this day, I still get e-mail to my "C4E_OWNS@HOTMAIL.COM" account and I haven't played in about 1 and 1/2 years.

There is fun in being a grief player, it's kind of like role playing and being the most badass evil character ever. It's fun to be the bad guy. It added an extra element that was missing from FPS's for me. At least for a little while.

I wouldn't release an aimbot again, I see that companies really don't care. Epic especially, they just patched a 3 year old Denial of Service bug with UT so they aren't exactly "on the ball". As for being a grief player, it was one big joke that no one ever got.

If anyone wants to play around with my old aimbot, it's still up here

Flaskmpeg is another must-have for backing up DVDs. It's not updated as frequently and doesn't have the editing features, but it's still one of the best apps for transcoding from MPEG1/2 to other video codecs.

It's really pretty easy. So is capture from television.

I have a WinTV card and cap in VirtualDub then compress it. Shiit, 330 megs? I, quite regularly in fact, archive 45 minute shows to a 700 meg CD. That's much better quality.

Now that CD's are cheap, why not? I mean, until we have DVD burners, might as well make do, right?

In any event, a few people I know have been archiving Mystery Science Theater 3000 shows on CD's. It's nice to have an episode on a 700 meg CD, but if it were up to me, I'd be tossing all these old episodes on DVD-R.

The quality of DivX movies (though DivX is crap, it's a hack of a beta Microsoft MPEG4v3 codec, back when it was a buggy piece of shit; MSMPEG4v2 is MUCH better and gives better quality) is nice right now, but it would be much better if we got some nice high density storage!

I frequently play a few games, and they all require the stupid cd in the drive. After getting tired of swapping cd's all the time, I found this page:

Which gave me a link to game CD ripping utils

Then finally to Daemon tools

Use DiscDump to get an .iso of the 2nd disc (it's not copy protected) and just use Daemon Tools to "mount" your .iso in the virtual cd-rom! Change the registry drive setting for D2 and you're set! (I have drive R: cdrom, drive V: virtual, drive W: burner)

Sure it takes 640 megs (good thing 30 gig drives are less then $200 ;-) but at least I never have to worry about my cd getting scratched.

If I bought the game, wtf do I *need* the cd in the drive to play?!

UT has a real nice compromise - you only need the cd-rom for patches: you can play BOTH single player and multi-player without the cd. I find Q3 and HalfLife to be annoying that you need the CD for single player.

I wish certain idiots would wise up and realize ALL copy-protection schemes have been and will continue to be broken.

We have a mainstream media that perpetuates misconceptions about the way the country currently works, and obscure a fair amount of crucial pieces of law from the people. Case in point, chances are you have no Constitutional rights, and neither does the Bill of Rights apply to you. (Never mind that the 14th Amendment was never lawfully ratified, see documentation here, here, and a State Supreme Court opinion here. The Supreme Court has not yet made a ruling on the validity of the 14th Amendment's supposed ratification, to the best of my knowledge.) United States citizens are bound by adhesion contracts, exchanging their rights for privileges and benefits that can be changed and revoked at will. Most of them are acutely aware of this situation as applies to their Social Security benefits, many of whom realize that they'll never see their payout. A waiver of these benefits anulls the contract, of course, and then one is free to do whatever one likes, provided there is no injured party. An essentially baseless currency is problematic, but there are those who intentionally deal in gold and barter. An increasingly misinformed citizenry is depressing (most people thought that Clinton's womanizing was worthwhile news; I'm more worried about this), but it's nice to know that when they finally push people too far, they'll eventually do something about it (although thanks to the amazing advances in modern technology, never before in history have so few been able to oppress so many with so little). All things considered, the States are a great place to be. They afford more freedom and opportunity than most other places I'm aware of... for those who understand how stuff works.

From the constitution:

The Congress shall have Power... Article 1, Section 8, Clause 3: To

I don't know what arguement allows the states to get away with Use Tax.

It's simple. The states you live in aren't "the several States" (note the capital S) that founded the United States. These states (note the lowercase s) are federal constructs that the federal government owns, controls, and regulates as it sees fit. It's similar to a company like Pepsico owning another company, like Pizza Hut. They were made with similar-sounding names (those two-letter "abbreviations" like CA you use on your mail) and the zip codes you use that legally attest that you live within them rather than in the actual State. In fact, these legal nexii overlap each of the actual States, and fit exactly within each of their borders. Since two entities can't own the same thing, the courts have found these federal zones to be "legal fictions", which is a nice way to say "full of shyte", but the media keeps it hush-hush, and so the majority of Americans don't know any better. This is all a big joke. Can't tax interstate trade? Well call it something different yet base it on the same thing. Something seriously needs to be done about this.

Something has. The country was designed in such a way that this couldn't be done. Over the decades, the laws have been carefully, quietly, and fraudulently tiptoed around, hacked into one might say, to get around these system defeats. The states referred to aren't actual States, the predescendants of the United States, from which the federal government draws it's power. No, these are lookalike states, little demonspawn federally-created zones, that look and sound like States, overlap the same borders, and are completely under the control of the federal government. They're also, according to the courts, "legal fictions", which is a nice way to say "castles built on clouds". They have no basis in real law, and only exist because people a) legally declare to the federal government that they are living their whole lives conducting interstate commerce (which then gives the federal government jurisdiction over them), and b) legally declare themselves as being in the fake federal zones rather than the bona fide States. (You do it on your mail all the time, using the two-letter designations you think are State abbreviations, and by using zip codes in your address, which is saying you're living inside these federal roach-motels) The best way I've found is to simply learn the laws and opt out of the system. It can be done, which is why the mainstream media is so phobic about mentioning it. If sheeple catch on, where's the veal?

That would be much more annoying to the citizenry if the 15 other taxes were eliminated and replace with a 120+% sales tax or a 60+% income tax.

They wouldn't be able to do it; it's like comparing apples and particle physics. Sales tax is what goes toward roads and the whole infrastructure deal. Not a bit of the income tax goes to the American people. The federal government commissions the Fed to print money, which it does out of thin air. In return, the federal government owes the Fed (a private corporation). So it charges income taxes and pays it back. The Fed pumps money into the economy (by way of the Federal government, which is very grateful), and the income tax is designed primarily to suck money back out of the system to keep down inflation. That's all. Yes, all of your income tax money is wasted, stolen even. Printed out of thin air when someone else wants money, and taken by force from residents of the United States to cover it.

The problem as I see it is the Emergency War Powers act, which suspends the Constitution and the checks and balances in the federal government in the event of a national crisis or state of emergency... and has been in effect since the 1930's.

It was designed to give the country a faster cornering speed during a national disaster, by making the Prez the undisputed de facto ruler of the country rather than having to worry about everyone's rights. The ocuntry was schnookered into a state of national emergency in the Depression due to the run on the banks (people stubbornly wanting access to the gold in their accounts. Shame on them, pesky citizens) and since then the only person in the country with the authority to take back that ruling has been the Prez himself.. and none has done so yet.

Yes, they're forming a new protocol. If they don't manage to get this one into place, they will continue until they do. Finding technological defeats is oodles of fun, but I see it as a quick-fix for a symptom rather than a cure for the actual problem: what to do with an increasingly seller's market which applies strategic pressure on a government to change the rules in its favor. It's now beyond Monopoly... a successful corporate entity can and will terraform its environment to become more favorable to it, rather than adapting to said environment, and as it becomes more and more successful will alter things even more to its liking, in a system of beneficial feedback. Beneficial to it that is... at the expense of all other entities (resembling the model of what the human race has done with "its" environment at the expense of other species).

In this instance, buying foreign alternatives is also a quick-fix, albeit one that will serve up to a certain point and then run out of steam, as the problem isn't exclusive to the United States. Eventually it will no longer be an option, and what then?

I offer a permanent defeat. It isn't strictly technological per se, but there is a way to render all legislation harmless to oneself. For those that haven't heard yet, it's sovereign citizenship, a way to opt-out of federal and what most people think of as state government. It's an individual option, not requiring voting for a certain candidate or lobbying for a cause (which means you don't have to wait for a statistically significant portion of the lemmings to wise up). You just opt out, with the appropriate paperwork. You then are able to lawfully live in the united States, but are out of jurisdiction in terms of legislation and so-called income (actually excise) taxes. Nothing is illegal for you. If someone challenges you on that, you're welcome to sue them in court; courts have been consistently backing sovereign citizenship up against johnny-come-latelies such as the IRS. Personally, I'd like to see the outcome of a soveriegn citizen's lawsuit against these people for intentionally crippling a drive to be compliant with legislation of the federal United States, which the courts have declared to be "a legal fiction" with no sound basis in law.

There are also a few crafty offensive weapons here for anybody who feels like going on the offense. One that springs to mind is a commercial lien against the people setting this attrocity into motion. A commercial lien was designed to give merchants an equitable way to reach justice... it's done out of court, and involves filing papers against specific individuals which damage their credit rating.

I think the most effective weapon is propogating awareness of sovereign citizenship itself. The mainstream media is too well-heeled to touch it, but as awareness of it continues to snowball, a lot of the assumptions we've previously had about the way things are run and exactly who is working for whom will become challenged. Legislation like this wouldn't even be seriously considered if the majority of people understood that federal legislation binds only entities who admit to engaging in interstate commerce (and most Americans are tricked into it via fraudulent wording in common forms). This also means that n a business not engaged in interstate commerce isn't subject to the legislation either; any sovereign citizen who wants to start churning out non-compliant hard drives is welcome to do so... and depending on the wording of the proposal, all they'd need to do is sell them to a third-party who would distribute them coast-to-coast. It works for every legislation one wants to circumvent... and allows a company in this country to do things which are simple legally impossible for other companies to do. As government contnues to encroach, I imagine that will make the prospect increasingly profitable.

Switch brain on. By definition, if you are making a perfect copy, then there is no need to decode the DVD first. You just do a bit by bit copy.

Since you're re-encoding the video you don't need DeCSS - any DVD player will do because you can capture the data after the MPEG2 decoding (e.g. with a hacked video driver).

No, not true. To quote the FlaskMPEG website, "The original FlasKMPEG can't and won't read files from encrypted DVDs". You do need DeCSS.

This really highlights a flaw in the CSS system - it only protects the MPEG2 signal. If you don't need a bit perfect MPEG2 copy it's worthless as a protection scheme.

The closing sentence makes sense if you switch do for don't.

Well, unless I missed something, you can only use FlaskMPEG to copy non-encrypted DVD's. So if your DVD is CSS-encrypted, you need both FlaskMPEG *and* DeCSS to copy it to a CD-ROM. You cannot do that alone with FlaskMPEG (unless the DVD isn't encrypted).

If you check out FlaskMPEG's website, there is mention of a program called 'FlasKMPEG DeCSS'. In the same paragraph, it states:

FlasKMPEG sources are available under the GPL license and it's totally out of our responsibility
...and...
The original FlasKMPEG can't and won't read files from encrypted DVDs

Ah, the joy of GPL - so, you are totally right, but someone has already fixed this issue :-)

This really is a non-issue. Either through use of 'FlaskMPEG DeCSS', or by simply DeCSSing the DVD to HD, then running FlaskMPEG, one person can cut a CD of the DVD. Then anyone with a CD writter can copy it in 5 minutes. This is all about as legal as trading mp3s ;-)

The bottom line, IMO, is that they are better just letting geeks watch DVDs freely under Linux, than encouraging people to start ripping DVDs to CD. But that's their call.

As a previous poster mentioned, the home page for the software cited in this story mentions that it won't work with encrypted DVDs.

Has anyone used FlasK MPEG and found this to be true? Or false? Because software that can rip DVDs but can't rip the encrypted ones seems to have very limited utility to me...

I really wish it was backward-compatible. 1.3GB is really good for an entire DVD rip encoded with FlasK into a DivX ;-) AVI (most rips I do average about 800 MB @ 720x480, 29.97 FPS). I would definitely be interested if this format could be read by a run-of-the-mill ATAPI CD-ROM.

To the MPAA: I don't rip DVD movies. I like being raped for $8 at the movies and even more for a DVD disk I can't play under Linux. Thanks.

This is an excellent resource for more information about the DivX codec as well as MPEG-4 compression in general. Now, if only FlasK could be ported to Linux...we'd be made in the shade.

I do see any reason why they could not add a "fatigue meter" which reflects how much exertion you are putting out, slows down your reactions when high, and cycles down when you rest.

The great-granddaddy of 3D games, Dungeons of Daggorath (which ate a large part of my summer in 1983), didn't have hit points or health points - instead it used your character's heartrate. Running, fighting, and getting hurt raised your heart rate, while resting lowered it. Killing monsters increased your aerobic fitness. If your heartrate got too high, you died. It was brilliant! Hearing "your" heart speed up during critical times was a wonderful psychological hook.

Agreed. I have no interest in flash-memory-based devices. Nor do I have interest in devices which require me to run proprietary software to transfer my MP3s to the device. The former - hey, battery-operated portables that play an hour's worth of music have been around for years. As for the latter, I really don't trust most major companies' closed-source software not to embed RIAA-friendly codes in my MP3s. A CD-ROM-based solution wins on both counts.

(For bonus points - scan the disc as an ISO-9660 disc or just use the ISO-9660-friendly part of the Joliet filesystem for *.mp3 - through all subdirectories - and ignore files not ending in *.mp3. Then you ensure that nobody will have to re-burn their CDs to use them with your device. Primitive solutions like "assume only .mp3 files exist" or "assume all files are in the root directory" are a cop-out, given the infancy of the market.)

People have already mentioned the MamboX as a possible contender - personally, it's been delayed so long that I'm not sure it'll ever get released. (That said, the day I see one is probably the day I buy one! :-)

On the open source front, check out these guys: Soundbastard. Looks like a group of geeks doing a decoder-in-firmware device that'll have an onboard IDE controller. It'll be your choice whether to use it with a conventional CD-ROM or an IDE (laptop or even conventional) hard drive. And the whole thing - hardware and firmware - is GPL'd!

What's nice is that the Soundbastard folks seem to be doing it with a minimum of surface-mount parts, meaning that the end product should be assemblable in kit form by an end user with a soldering iron. Sweeeeeeeet!

I'm not a big fan of Katz, nor do I loathe him. Here are a couple of reasons why Katz shouldn't be writing for slashdot.

I'm not going to attack Mr Katz or anything. But something must be said for his writing and Slashdot's tenacious cling to his name. I haven't read all that much Katz but I've seriously read enough to notice he makes sweeping generalization after sweeping, ignorant generalization. His articles are too long and way too full of fluff to be considered useful.

We all know why generalizations are bad, and probably all of the Slashdot community knows how it produces bad writing. The community knows the lives of it's members, it knows that while we all like to spend time using our computers, our time is very limited and long, dramatic articles with very little factual value are useless and contribute to the amount of noise (yes, i do realize that I am doing just that now, but I am not a feature writier, I am keeping my opinion where it belongs, in a slashdot reply).

I'm not going to sit here on my lazy, biligerent troll butt telling you why I think John Katz is a terrible writer, but I am going to tell you that his style of writing and the content with which he fills his articles doesn't belong here at slashdot. I'm going to speak for the community at large here, we don't need his types of opinions, opinions that we all already form as first reactions, or opinions that we all dismiss in the first ten or 15 seconds after reading a bit of news.

Slashdot should stick to producing articles that are short and contain well, i'd say %85 fact. Let all the opinions breed and mutate in the replies. Users who wish to filter out noise never find themselves in the replies section browsing opinions, they form their own from the articles themselves. I'm not saying opinions are useless (they can be more useful than the actual facts they're based on) but they certainly should be segregated as much as possible from fact in a publication such as this.

A good example is voices from the hellmouth. While I think that Katz really has his finger on the pulse of each and every one of us geek readers here in his articles, I strongly believe that hellmouth has no business here on slashdot (as is the case with many other katz articles). His writings belong in magazines like rolling stone, like playboy, his appearances belong on TV shows like good morning america, like oprah. He is so obvious and non informative to geeks that his articles and opinions tend to be extremely redundant. They are still very valuable, but should target an audience that needs "dumbing down" when it comes to explaniations of geek lifestyle and mindset.

Above all else, above my utterly insignificant and meaningless opinion, there is the opinion of the slashdot community at large. This opinion, bottom line, states that slashdot readers do not want to read any more Katz. While this magazine is the property of all our well known, furry slashdot editors, I think they have an obligation to their readers. They too were once voiceless geeks, that's probably why they created slashdot in the first place.

I tried to keep this as rant free and focused as possible, but if I digressed, I want you to know my main point was to show how Katz's articles really don't belong here and how slashdot's editors really need to start reading the replies at the end of his article posts.

I'll bet Ford reserves the right to seize the free computers of it's employees if the higher powers suspect employees of sabotage.

Just because something is free, doesn't mean it's better. Take free web hosting, for example. If you sign yourself up, you are at the mercy of your host. You can't post anything they deem objectionable (although they are quite lienent! and they inseminate your pretty site with pop up windows and ad frames.

So I guess when Ford hires you they hand you a new PC. Great! But you, the /. reader, knows that they'll wind up confiscating it in the long run to read your files on bringing down robotic car builders. If you decline the PC, you'll probably be shunned.

I said that AOhell didn't need to sink $ into Time/Warner, they needed to upgrade their R&D. I hate to say it but I said so. I use AOhell 4.0 (I'm 16, don't flame me. If I had the choice, I'd be local so I could use my Linux box) It crashes all the time. Did they go to Bill Gates for their software models, or is it just me? 3.0 was probally one of the more stable versions, even thought on my site I've got AOL version 1.6 for DOS. I'm gonna try to install it on my XT, hope it doesn't screw it up. It'll be cool to have it on there though. Roboto's page Note:cannot be viewed in IE. This will re-direct you to another page.
