Most efficient native way to do all that
NEW APK Hosts File Engine 10++ 32/64-bit https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&biw=&bih=&q=%22APK+Hosts+File+Engine%22+and+%22start64%22&btnG=Google+Search&gbv=1/
Ads/script/malware rob speed/security/privacy/bandwidth.
Hosts add speed (via hardcodes/adblocks), security (vs. bad sites/malware/poisoned dns), reliability (vs. dns down), & anonymity (vs. dns requestlogs/trackers).
Less power/cpu/ram + IO use vs. DNS/routers/addons/antivirus + less security bugs/complexity & faster vs. addons/routers/remote dns!
Avoids DNSChangers in routers/IP settings & dns redirect (99++% of ISP DNS != patched vs. it) + DNS tracking & lighten DNS load & resolve faster via local RAM!
* Via what u NATIVELY have in a FASTER kernelmode IP stack (does more w/ less).

Re: Honest Question
It's not only that Slashdot censors conservative comments. The modding here is so terrible these days that pretty much all intelligent comments are censored, while the dumbest comments get modded up.
I have to browse at -1 now all of the time just to see comments worth reading.
I think it's safe to say that this community is in the final stages of dying. Google Trends and Alexa both show a steep decline over time. Slashdot is quite irrelevant compared to a site like Hacker News, for example.
You aren't alone. This community is being abandoned quite quickly.

No, not quite that "simple" a problem
No school today...because the vendor pushed out an untested update again.
Let me help you, as it appears you didn't do 30 seconds of Googling to help yourself. Chrome OS is heavily beta tested, and is built upon Chromium OS, which it itself is heavily beta tested. As a Google admin for a public K-12 school (~1200 Chromebooks), I have the option of assigning all my Chrome devices into one of three categories of development. Google "recommends" I activate a policy that will randomly assign 5% of all devices to a beta channel* to assist them with testing and development, though our district chooses to use stable-only software.
Occasionally, a serious bug actually does make it through to a stable, but if it is found, Google has been incredibly quick to prioritize its fix and release an update. It's only when there's a doozie like this where suddenly everyone starts the finger-shaming.
* The first time I turned this on, the very next day, we had about five Chromebooks all come into our office. Every one of them had Chrome crashing randomly, usually within about 30 seconds of it opening up. All had the exact same version of Chrome on it, v.51 I think, when every other one of our Chromebooks had v.50 or below. The only way we were able to fix them was to use a CrOS repair drive utility to reinstall CrOS with a previous version. When I saw that other Chromebooks that had v.50 couldn't be upgraded to v.51, I reasoned that these were the beta tested Chromebooks. I turned that feature back off, but I still saw a few more Chromebooks trickle into my office over the next few days that also "got lucky". After that, never again.

Re:Mothership is done...
Apple won't let you see it up close, but you can get a really good bird eye's view using Google Maps.
The Apple Park Visitor Center has a scale model of the campus and employees hand out iPads with a virtual reality app to let you interact with the model by taking off the virtual roof to look inside the building. If you ever tried Pokemon Go, it's the same technology. If the floor layout is accurate, Apple workers are packed like sardines in cubicles.

Re:Nothing changed but the language
What you say is absolutely true, but changing cultural norms also play a role in the "epidemic" behavior we're seeing.
I'm a horology geek, so I recently pulled up the movie Thunderball on Netflix to check out the exact details of the famous (among watch geeks) "Bond strap". Rather than search through the movie I decided to simply watch the whole thing. Now I grew up in the 60s, and I've seen this movie several times, but it's been maybe 30 years since the last time. Watching this time, all I could think was, "holy cow, Bond is rape-y."
The thing is it wasn't so long ago that unchaperoned young women were tacitly assumed to be looking for or at least open to sex. That assumption was never so strict here in the US as in places like Italy, which is why so many American women travelling there were surprised to be mobbed on the street by grabbing men. But even here every woman was taught by her mother never to be alone with a man, and if she did she had to be prepared to slap him, which was usually effective but sometimes a dangerous escalation.
The reason that Bond's behavior when he forces himself on his physiotherapist wasn't immediately perceived by audiences as reprehensible was because as a woman in a job that sometimes required working with men she'd have been perceived as fair game for aggressive sexual overtures when she was alone with one.
That doesn't work when half the women in the workforce are women. If every occasion a man and a woman had to work together was sexually charged it'd be chaos. So the norms (which were never very kind to working women) had to change. The thing is with change is that we're all in different places in that change depending on how old we are, where we live, and the kinds of organizations we've worked for.

Re:How about some context?
This article is missing all the context to this debate. Google sent the email in response to the Indian "Hike" messenger (now the #1 app in India), which came up with a creative use for Accessibility permission to make the app go viral at the click of a button on top of other social networks including WhatsApp.
Before they used this trick they were nowhere near the #1 spot in the Indian app store.

Re:You think?
The globe does not fucking care where CO2 comes from. It DOES care about total concentration.
China is adding another 700 coal plants around the globe over the next 5 years (and that is just what is STARTED today
As of August 2017, this alone will increase coal plants by 43% over today's amount. That is more than what the entire western wold burns and is more than 2/3 of what CHina does on their own.
As to paris accord, it is fucking joke. It is doing NOTHING to stop CO2 production. Not even slowing it down. The reason why most nations are backing it is because they do not have to do a damn thing. And it's backed by idiots that do not work on the CO2 issue. -
Re:You think?
Educate yourself.
As this one says, they are doing 700 plants and will expand coal based electricity world-wide by 43%. IOW, china will add more coal plants just in 5 years than the entire western world has today. In fact, since China has around 58% of current coal plants, they will add 2/3 of what they have. -

The Starvation Treatment for Diabetes, c.1917
C'mon guys. I realize everything old is new again, but just because everyone forgot how to cure Type 2 Diabetes with a little bit of self discipline when insulin was invented (at the time, they didn't realize that there was a difference between Types 1 &2 doesn't mean that you can take credit for it.
Ooooooooh.... you're trying to sell a meal-plan and cash in on a 100 year old innovation.... I get it.

Fixed that for ya. What did you use to type it? An IBM Selectric?

Show him the science...
... about how his brain doesn't reason correctly. You can tell people the facts and you won't reason to the right conclusion:
The reality is IP law is so out of control you need to sit down and get a good reason as to why it's bullshit.
Teach him about the theft of PC games and show him most wanted 2005 and NFS world online - same game but just rebranded for corporations to take control of the files on their servers. The reality is the corporate world has been stealing everything that isn't nailed down because they know the public is tech illiterate and indoctrinated. There is no such thing as balanced capitalism if you look at the last 200 years of copyright law. Go pick up a copy of Most wanted 2005 and download NFS World online, and show him how corporations trick people.
I'll use the example of need for speed for the PC.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Need_for_Speed:_Most_Wanted_(2005_video_game)
Same game forked and modified to be held hostage and rebranded "MMO".
NFSWORLD homepage with years the game has been shut down

Re:WTF is Progressive Web Apps?
Thanks to everyone who pointed out Google's developer pages:

Their I/O 2017 talk is online:

Re:WTF is Progressive Web Apps?
WOW. You're right (https://developers.google.com/web/progressive-web-apps). (Emphasis added.)
Progressive Web Apps are user experiences that have the reach of the web, and are:
Reliable - Load instantly and never show the downasaur, even in uncertain network conditions.
Fast - Respond quickly to user interactions with silky smooth animations and no janky scrolling.
Engaging - Feel like a natural app on the device, with an immersive user experience. -
Re:WTF is Progressive Web Apps?
On first sight, I though this was a joke. It's not a joke, it's for real... https://developers.google.com/...

It doesn't do predictive text, but everything else. I find the Ctrl C and V very useful https://play.google.com/store/...

Re:And as usual
Isn't Chrome just a free browser? Why would Google want Amazon to "sell" that? Not sure what a chrome cast is....
Google want Amazon to sell their Chromecast which allows users to stream video/audio to televisions/speakers. A bit like the Fire Stick, but without any build-in applications. You "cast' from your phone/laptop and, under typical use, once cast it no longer requires any input from that device.

Re:It's not hard to figure it out
Also worth noting that Google lets you see and delete all audio they've recorded from your device. They like to keep your voice history around for more accurate voice recognition, but it's not essential. You can delete it all if you're paranoid, or just the snippet of your uncle making an obscene and embarrassing voice search.
That said, I'm still waiting for voice recognition to be packaged into a self-contained device. It's been almost 10 years since it began showing up in its server-assisted form (20 years as a standalone app on PC). You'd think by now technology would've improved to the point where they could start putting it on a standalone device which didn't need Internet connectivity. -
Re:Good grief
your cellphone.
If anyone doubts this, and uses Android, go see your voice and audio activity. It's pretty eye-opening when you hear your own voice from several years ago. It includes times that you clearly meant to trigger "OK Google" and times that it mistakenly picked up random conversations.
On the other hand, if Google is honest about this being the data that they collect, then bravo for being so open and transparent. They also offer the ability to delete. Do Amazon or Apple provide such access to the audio data they have collected from you?

Re:The Coal Board
The oil and coal industry hold significant patents on the devices that make competing energy systems viable.
Interesting. Do you have some of these patent numbers ?
Sure, US4009052,US3791867, US3972759, though I think it will be easier for you to start working your way through the Energy act I posted and you'll get an idea how the oil industry works.
IIRC around sec 625 is where the funding is allocated to destroy the only demonstrated viable functioning prototype of the Integral Fast Reactor, a Fast Neutron Nuclear Reactor, high burn up rate (almost 20%) with a design that encapsulated a self contained fuel reprocessing facility, that produces electricity (obsoleting coal) and hydrogen (obsoleting oil - whilst maintaining existing vehicle fleets), producing medical isotopes, whilst burning through the stocks of enough weapons grade plutonium and Depleted uranium to power the US for the next 5000 years. Your tax dollars at work.
I think it's important to consider if Oil and Coal would be motivated to maintain their multi-trilllion dollar profits and capable of doing this than greenies and NIMBYs that are so often accused. It's time for that stupid premise to be put aside with the naivety that allows it to be believed. Greenies and NIMBYs didn't argue for billions of dollars of subsidies to maintain oil industry profits and I think it's safe to say that a nuclear reactor that promotes nuclear disarmament is in everybody's interest. The US could export these reactors to Russia, China even North Korea and end global conflict within 5 years whilst solving the global nuclear waste issue, but oil.
The only loser would have been oil and coal. You think they're going to give up trillions of dollars? No, they're gonna start lobbying, it's cheaper. Repealing the "New Deal PUCHA (Act)" that was put in place to prevent a repeat of the 1929 depression in the bargain so they can rort half billion dollar subsidy hits on delayed conventional nuclear facility construction, whilst claiming input tax credits. That's the reality of energy funding policy, that's how the scam works.
Look for yourself, it's US law, enacted.

Re:Wholeheartedly agree
The best convenience coffee (at home) for a reasonable price ($70 - $120) are Bunn Velocity Brew machines - or similar. The coffee makers have a tank that keeps the water at ~240'F. When a 10-12 cup pot is brewed the water comes out in a constant temperature stream, and is done in 3 minutes.
