True, but this makes the process easier. One click to toggle JS and it autorefreshes the site when you do it.

Actually the amount of fuckery with JS these days - modal popups, paywalls, disabling the clipboard and autoplay video - means you should probably move to a whitelist model. I.e. rather than enabling by default and disabling for sites that abuse it, disable by default and enable it for sites that don't.

I agree that GNU proper isn't essential, as other free userspaces such as BusyBox or that of FreeBSD can substitute for GNU. What makes Android less useful for some people is that it's not even a POSIX/Linux distribution, as it doesn't attempt to provide the programming languages and core utilities specified by POSIX unless you install GNU as an app.

It is. At least in my corner of the world. Things are growing, stocks are up, and recruiters are calling. I'm pretty sure that's because the republicans are in power and they've somehow gotten the reputation for being pro-business while the democrats have somehow become anti-business. (And an unnerving fraction of the economy is all based on perception alone). That's not a line to be on the other side, but it's mostly true. And it's not all perception: The EPA has been slashed, the FCC neutered, and they're trying their best to make the masses pay more for healthcare. These are good moves for companies and the owners of said companies. But it's bad for the people. A handful of companies would really rather tear down Network Neutrality, but EVERYBODY ELSE benefits from keeping it in place. Because the Internet has done some great stuff and competition is good.

A) You've confused registrants with registrars. It's the registrant, Sorenson Communications, that's being held liable here, not a registrar like Google, so your comparisons to Google's situation fall apart right from the get-go.

B) Companies that provide 911 service agree to certain legal obligations. Failure to uphold those obligations results in hefty fines because lives are literally at risk. Registrars like Google are under no such obligations to IANA.

C) Speaking of IANA, it, rather than the US government, is the organization with the authority you're talking about. The USG gave it away in 1998 to ICANN, which is a nonprofit organization in the private sector. As such, none of their authority has stemmed from the USG in nearly 20 years.

D) Barring its obligations to IANA—which again, do NOT derive from government authority—Google can set whatever terms they want. If an applicant doesn't like them, they can simply take their business elsewhere.

E) Google's terms—which The Daily Stormer agreed to—make it clear that they can cancel registrations at their discretion, such as if a site is being used for unlawful activities. The courts have repeatedly ruled that inciting violence—which is what The Daily Stormer is accused of—is an unlawful form of speech, akin to shouting "FIRE!" in a crowded theater. It is neither protected speech nor a civil right. Guess what Google cited as the reason for cancelling the registration?

All of which is to say, I'm fine with people pointing out that Nazis have rights too, and I'll stand by you in defending them (regardless of my utter and complete distaste for what they say), but don't you dare suggest that private entities are obligated to assist them in spreading their message, particularly for speech that not even the US government itself is obligated to protect.

Ad companies appear to have already started to defeat hosts by using pseudorandom subdomains. APK's solution can't block these, but Firefox tracking protection can:

For each HTTP load, Firefox looks up multiple URL fragments based on Safe Browsing regex lookup. This allows us to blocklist all subdomains of a tracking domain without enumerating each one.

Good news: Google Search on desktop browsers fairly reliably notates paywalled articles through the lack of "Cached" in the down arrow menu.

Bad news: The down arrow menu doesn't appear in mobile browsers.

and while they're at it flag the sites that pester you to turn off your ad block to view an article.

Bad news: Now that Google has established its pay-per-article system known as Contributor, Google has actually joined the anti-adblock brigade. It even recommends that users of Firefox Private Browsing click a button labeled "Disable protection" to allow access to a site. (This is because most anti-adblock can't tell the difference between tracking blockers, which block only ad networks and exchanges that track users across sites, and actual ad blockers, which additionally block self-hosted ads.) Now that TV Tropes is using anti-adblock, I'm even more glad that I switched to All The Tropes years ago.

As with many others here, I don't want results from sites that I can't visit. I understand that Google wants the data, but there's no reason that I need to see that mixed in. Google currently has a feature for Chrome users that not many people seem to be aware of called the Personal Blocklist. You can get the extension from Google here:

After you've installed it, when you're on a google search results page, you'll see a small link to "block example.com" under each result. No more articles from Forbes or pictures from pinterest that you can't browse through. Hope that helps someone!

Now that even supermarkets and other places are tracking customers via wifi as they walk around stores, it makes sense to have wireless turned off everywhere except where you need it on.

Wifimatic or similar can do this for you. It can save your battery too.
