You need to look out for Nathan-K and Bensen Leung
This Gizmodo article has for a title "USB-C Power Meter Helps You Spot Counterfeit Accessories Before They Fry Your Gadgets"
but..... FTA
"What the monitor canâ(TM)t do, however, is protect a device if thereâ(TM)s a detected problem in the power flow. Itâ(TM)s not a surge protector, nor does it have any built-in alarms or warnings because it has no idea what the power requirements are for whatever device youâ(TM)re using it with."
So, really, it does nothing, and by the time you see 40V hitting your phone when it's expecting 12, I think it's going to be too little too late before the magic smoke escapes, and really, who knows what the charging spec on their devices is, really?
The amount of cables that Nathan-K and Bensen Leung test that don't match the spec, don't work to spec, do work to spec with exceptions, melt or any of the above combination is nuts.
Nathan-K has a page up on G+ with more details:
https://plus.google.com/collec...
They've a spreadsheet of tested cables:
https://docs.google.com/spread...
Personally, my favourite comment regarding USB-C comes from the register:
https://forums.theregister.co....
"it's a design error
An electrical specification which allows multiple, software-controlled supply voltages, but does not require connected devices to tolerate the highest available voltage.
What could possibly go wrong?"

Re:Not doomsday
This was embarrassing.
Yes, an embarrassing set of hysteria from the right wing, who forgot the truth on their way to their latest outrage.
Tell us about the curtains, the birth certificate and the training exercise.
The Mexican president canceling a meeting in a huff? Not so much.
Oh oh, oh, ooloorie, you forgot, Trump said it was "mutual" so you are passing the wrong story.
Of course, now he has to meet with another populist radical, who wants to advance her own agenda over the wishes of the actual elected government which only now is she spinning as what she intended to do all along.
I guess we can start calling it AirStrip One.

Re:Easy answer
We all know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I do find a parking garage, made of concrete and rebar can be a thing of beauty. But only if it performs its functions well. Would you consider a parking garage more or less beautiful if the design was altered to give it more "aesthetic flair" and these additions reduced the output flow to the point that it took you 20 minutes to exit?
A prison cell is a nice counterpoint since its design is completely oriented towards function. I suppose I could admire such design, but I would not find it beautiful. Not because it lacks rounded corners or a chic color scheme, but because it serves an ugly function.
Modern UI is more like Frank Gehry building designs. They have a lot of useless components tacked on that drive up the cost of materials, construction, and maintenance all while hindering maximal usage. And yes, I find his designs to be ugly as sin. Frank Gehry (google image)

"Starting April 21, 2015, Google Search will be expanding its use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal."So if your site doesn't have HUGE buttons/links, tons of whitespace around elements so a finger doesn't hit two controls at the same time, and small bite sized paragraphs that fit on a phone screen, you get deranked compared to sites that do.

Re:Infection
Only the poorly educated say 'learnt' in the US (it's 'learned') here, but using a 't' for past tense is a legitimate British grammar construct.
I don't know when I've seen such a glide from prescriptivism to descriptivism in a single (albeit compound) sentence before. Perhaps in Bryson's book on English. (As a professional crank, Bryson's good at freely mixing fact and opinion.)
In any case, DARE[1] shows some regional use of "learnt" in the US, and I dare say[2] that you'd have a difficult time demonstrating that every such use was by someone who is "poorly educated" by any reasonable standard.
Certainly use of the -t suffix has been declining on this continent for more than a century, though in English as a whole the trend is not so clear. And it's not just the past-tense inflection of verbs, as the rarity of "whilst" in this country shows.[3]
[1] The Dictionary of American Regional English, the unassuming name for a mammoth project to catalog regional differences in English usage in the US.
[2] Heh.
[3] Etymologically "whilst" is "whiles" + -t, where -t is still in effect a suffix indicating the past tense. But "whilst", a synonym for "while", is pretty much always used grammatically an adverb, even if etymologically it's the simple past tense of "to while" (as in "while away the time"). All this thanks to the eagerness with which English users move words among parts of speech.

Re:Whaaa! We don't want those jobs.
Food is subsidized, you have to keep food cheap or people will get angry.
Clothing/Textile is the result of horrible 3rd world working conditions.
Furniture is the result of horrible 3rd world working conditions.
Electronics is the result of horrible 3rd world working conditions. (See suicide net comments)
Gas prices are all over the place, I will let you draw your own conclusion. So let's ask the following questions.
1. Do you need a college education? Yes
2. Can college debt be discharged in bankruptcy? No
3. Do you need insurance? Yes
4. Are you forced to buy auto, home, and medical? Yes
5. Do you have to pay property taxes and fees? Yes
6. Can you grow your own food? Yes
7. Can you buy resale furniture or make your own? Yes
8. Can you walk, ride a bike, or take public transportation? Yes
9. Can you live without your cell phone? No, not if you are a hipster or millennial. It is more important to snapchat or tweet from a protest march than it is to vote as evidenced by the pathetic voter turnout rate for the last election. 55% really?
10. Can you save enough money for retirement? No.So in conclusion, the numbers you accused me of Cherry Picking matter an awful lot more than cheap furniture and cheap electronics. The numbers I listed are things YOU HAVE TO BUY, most are mandated by law like INSURANCE.
The future is significantly less secure for young people today due to wage stagnation and lack of good, long-term stable jobs with benefits. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling a free-trade agreement. They will say stuff like, "Oh there will be some losers with the agreement, but many will be better off." What has this brought us? An economy where 40% of the workers exist in the service economy with few full-time workers or benefits.
If Germany can do it, the USA can do. Good education, strong worker protection, world class products, and strong exports.
I say this to anyone. If the playing field is level America can compete. If the playing field is not level and the American worker is competing with someone who makes $2/week, then no, we can no compete and win. If we are going to have free-trade, there has to be work-protection and and an adjustment factor for standard of living.
If not, the race to the bottom will continue. More laws will get passed forcing you to pay for things you have to have (money to go to college, auto, property, and health insurance) and can't afford while the standard of living plummets.
This must stop.

Oh, cut the Trump-is-TEH-EVUL crap. The 2000s just called. They want their Bush Derangement Syndrome returned.
Look how Obama's Department of Education cooked the books on student loan default rate in order to hammer for-profit schools:
Obama’s Student-Loan Fiasco
A ‘coding error’ helped justify a punitive new education regulation. In early January the department disclosed that it had discovered a “coding error” that incorrectly computed College Scorecard repayment rates—that is, the percentage of borrowers who haven’t defaulted and have repaid at least one dollar of their loan principal. The department says the error “led to the undercounting of some borrowers who had not reduced their loan balances by at least one dollar.”
The department played down the mistake, but the new average three-year repayment rate has declined by 20 percentage points to 46%. This is huge. It means that fewer than half of undergraduate borrowers at the average college are paying down their debt.
...Marc Jerome, president of for-profit Monroe College in the Bronx, discovered the Scorecard rate inflation last August. In several emails to Education officials, he urged the department to hold off on finalizing the regulation. If the regulation were applied evenly, a large number of nonprofit and public institutions would fail to meet the standard. But then the justification for the department’s selective regulation of for-profits would vanish.
The department finalized the regulation in October anyway, perhaps anticipating a Hillary Clinton victory that would allow the repayment inflation game to keep going. Yet now it’s taking credit for discovering and fixing the Scorecard error that likely would have been uncovered by the new Trump Administration.

Re:Obviously...
Those were the good old days... when setting the all the IRQ, IO port, DMA and address jumpers for the the expansion cards in a decked-out PC was like solving a soduku puzzle.
Good times.....I used a plug-in card called the Discovery Card to wrestle with IRQs. Best gadget ever back then...it had a bunch of LEDs that would light to help you determine what IRQ was in use for a given slot.
I've still got it in a drawer but there's nothing with ISA slots still around that you could plug it into.

Re:Because voice apps are, by & large, stupid.
First, you have to be in exactly the right situation - there cannot be background noise or crosstalk - so essentially, a nearly SILENT room
That's what I used to think. Google lets you browse and replay your past voice recognition history. I was surprised to find the noise cancellation mics they have on modern phones are really, really good. Even stuff I said while driving on the highway with the phone in a cup holder is perfectly intelligible.
Ever since, I've been using "Ok Google" more often in noisy background situations. And most of the time it works surprisingly well. -
Re: News for Nazis
We have a pretty good voting system. There are some other options but each has it's pros and cons. None has a clear advantage over the other in the large scale.
This is wrong.
There are clear advantages of other voting systems over FPTP/plurality. Several criteria have been produced to compare voting systems (example comparisons here). Where criteria focus on specific (often worst-case) scenarios, voting simulations can help see the bigger picture. It can be shown that plurality necessarily devolves into a two-party system.
It is clear that plurality is a terrible system, even if there is no unanimous concensus on which replacement is the best.

Re: WY is a good place to be from
See how long your California stays in the blue after productive people like me all leave for, say, Texas. I give it about 5-6 more years. After you have nobody left to tax, you'll just have one big circle-jerk of illegals/gangs abusing "disability" poets/dog-walkers.
I am not glad it will happen, but I frankly don't see a solution; I am just tired of paying for the single moms, the surfer bums that "just need a break, man," the community organizers, the social justice warriors... Hollywood might still be making money for a couple more years, so you can keep that.
LOL. In case you didn't know, California population has been on the increase for over 100 years: https://www.google.com/search?...
