Re:Visual Basic at #3?
Anyway it may just be a statistical bump...Last year was a huge year, maybe this year is seeing a fall off.
Delphi or Javascript? Delphi I could see. Javascript, not so much. They should not be recording a reduction of interest in Javascript when more frameworks appeared in the last year than ever before. I have seen no signs of the Javascript engine waning. In fact, it's continuing to pick up speed as customers demand web applications with greater interactivity and responsiveness.
What seems to be true to me is that their methodology is flawed. What they are doing is effectively a Google Fight on a professional scale. Which can lead to all sorts of problems due to the way the english language works. For example, take these two Google Fights:
Delphi vs. Javascript - 6.62:1 in favor of Javascript
Delphi programming vs. Javascript programming - 2:1 in favor of Javascript
Yet if we follow their methodology and search Google with +"Delphi programming" and +"Javascript programming" we get 260,000 vs. 341,000 results, respectively. Does that mean that Javascript is only slightly more popular for programming than Delphi? No, it means that people don't use the term "Javascript programming" a whole lot. (Or the search engine doesn't find that combination of words very appetizing. Either way.)
A more interesting search is to check Sourceforge. 1842 results for Javascript, 1359 results for AJAX, and 889 results for Delphi. That tells me that Javascript is WAY more popular than Delphi. -

Re:A serious rethink of ExtJS
any top-level application code must be GPL'd due to the distributed nature of web applications. The inherent act of pulling the client-side code down to the browser categorizes this as distribution...
Of the client-side code, yes.
What I don't get is how he thinks that also applies to the server-side code. Tightly coupled or not, the GPL traditionally refers to things which are actually linked against each other -- for example, it is entirely possible to have a non-GPL'd program depend on, say, a GPL'd bash. And then there are things like Second Life, where the client is GPL'd, but the server isn't available under any license -- sure, they are tightly coupled, but there's still a network in the way.
Whether or not you think the GPL should apply to the other end of the connection, I'm pretty sure it legally doesn't, and I can't see how you could enforce that, anyhow. Does that mean that if I write a GPL'd client for Google Search (for things like Google Fight, say), could I then demand Google to give me their PageRank algorithm? You could say it only applies to apps in which client and server are developed together, but how the hell do you define that clearly enough to work? And again, how does it protect you against a third party using your API?
Now I'm very much concerned whether I should be using this package at all - not based on the quality of the software - but based on the leadership instability and capricious nature of this licensing switch.
Is the leadership unstable?
I can see both sides on the switch, though. I can see why it seems kind of sneaky and underhanded that they'd change the license out from under you, with no notice. But at the same time, I really don't see this changing many apps -- I suspect most of them will have a backend that ext can't touch. And, as you say, you were planning to pay the commercial license anyway -- so the only thing this changes is your perception of the guy.

Re:Under Fire?
They should just stick to those two rules or else we would see a different Google logo everyday.
That's nothing. The shit will really hit the fan when two groups both decide their particular holidays deserve the logo and happen to be on the same day. To make the shit radiactive, have one of the groups be muslims. To make it supercritical, make the other group be of any other religion.
Now that's a Googlefight from Hell

Re:Why was the altitude changed?
From my experiences they are very bad at converting anything.
If you're so superior at converting, convert the miles to kilometers in your head and you have nothing to complain about.
Personally, I convert just fine, and thus usually don't give it a passing thought when something is miles or kilometers.
While I prefer the kilometer for its conversion ability, it is naive to pretend that the mile is an eccentric unit. This is the internet, and we are speaking in English. A quick check of googlefight shows that "miles" is written 10 times more often than "kilometers". So use your intellect and convert. -

You may have a point. I just took it to Google Fight, where I entered the terms "Global Warming" and "Britney Spears." Global Warming seems to have won by 67,800,000 results to Britney's 31,500,000. It also beats out Paris Hilton by a somewhat smaller margin and Lindsay Lohan by a huge margin.

Re:Unix receives more attack attempts than windows
Tons of break-in attempts everyday, and my Slackware just resists all of them.
I'm glad you think so; I take that as a compliment! ;)
Unix is a far more secure platform than Windows; and it has been proved since it's more exposed to heavy attacks all the time.
No, all you've established, if we can call "stating something" to be establishing it, is that servers with "well known open ports" are more secure than desktops with users installing software, visiting potentially malicious sites, etc. And frankly it doesn't matter what ports are open; what matters is that you know what ports are open, and why. It should go without saying that this knowledge is much more common in serverland than in userland (and it could be argued that it's more common among Unix administrators than Windows, at least historically).
I don't really care (nor am I qualified) enough to do my own proper research, but I compared search results for Linux and Windows privilege escalation. A search on SecurityFocus returned results in similar proportions: Linux and Windows.
Of course this is not evidence of anything other than more discovered bugs returning those particular keywords, and I'm not going to argue that one OS is more secure than another -- I only assert that your comparison is inadequate. -
