Re:random thoughts
For stability tests, i prefer IntelBurnTest over Prime95. Basically it just automates running LinPack.
Will test memory as well, and has a 64bit version available.

Re:Not quite
Given the environment that mobile devices are in (outside, cars etc) they should all be water resistant and heat resistant to at least 180 degrees.
The only logical conclusion you can make is that they are poorly designed for the environment people use them in. Leaving your iPhone in your car should not cause it to explode. Getting caught in the rain shouldn't wreck your device either.

"The great ion.simian.c" (NOT): Proof inside...
Arstechnica's JEREMY REIMER (a blatant FAKE) was caught red-handed alongside his friends impersonating me on his OSY website (to which his hosting provider removed large portions of his website for, lol, & his ISP nailed him for email harassing me, as well as making threats to my family no less, which got law enforcement involved in Canada (& Reimer stopped right there, lol)).
So much for your "edited" arstechnica posts that are not even myself (they like to impersonate others, because that's ALL they have)...
Anyhow - Here we go now, ready (as to your errors here):

Ask Jeremy Reimer about impersonating me
Arstechnica people like Jeremy Reimer impersonated me on their forums & that was shown @ Windows IT Pro forums (url below) as well as his friends impersonating others & admitting to it on Reimer's own forums (lol, what a bunch of losers), & proof of that is below (anything over @ arstechnica is the same, b.s. impersonations many times of myself):

For Sunbelt Software (I'll save you the time there) to whom we contracted out wares we had written, thru LC (& also MANY years later, in 2003, when I fixed up his pagedefrag program, instructing him where it was hardcoded and how/why it could adversely affect the operations of his application if people moved their pagefile.sys location (which is doable on both accounts) to another disk (he had them hardcoded to C: drive only, & it made his program fail - he emailed me back thanking me in fact).

NO, I never said I was - We'd both done paid work for a couple of the same companies @ the same time in the mid to late 1990's in this field & that how I know he, in addition to my helping him find AND FIX problems in his applications (never the reverse though), but I am not he, I am myself. No thank you.
(I wouldn't associate myself w/ they by ANY means - they were caught impersonating myself on their forums, caught email harassing myself by their ISP's, & had law enforcement summoned upon them for it no less, and lastly they were caught impersonating others (via posting as them & admitting to it no less after being caught doing so @ Windows IT Pro magazine forums, no less, publicly to their humiliation worldwide))

Re:But their drivers still suck
Make sure that you are completely removing the old drivers with something like Driver Cleaner before you install any new ones. Whenever I install new drivers, I usually boot into Safe Mode (after Driver Cleaner reports no old driver files hanging around) and do the install from there. Then it is reboot once more (I never promised this would be simple) and set the resolution and make any final adjustments. Not un-installing an old driver completely can leave behind old files that will still be used. I was having similar problems in the past and doing all of that finally cured it. Now it is a little more effort than simply installing the new drivers over the old ones, but since doing it the long and diligent way, I have yet to run into any driver issues. (And this is on a 64 bit Vista system.)

Re:What's the point in wating for markets to turn
An i7 920 will crush an X2 5200+ in CPU-intensive tasks. http://www.guru3d.com/article/intel-core-i7-920-and-965-review/15 shows a software-based rendering benchmark. The i7's are up in the 11's and 12's, while my X2 6000+ was in the 4's.
The i7 system will definitely cost more, as there aren't really any budget X58 motherboards and the CPUs and DDR3 are still brand-new, top-of-the-line parts (and thus get a price premium). However, I just got an EVGA tri-SLI board, i7 920, and 6GB of DDR3-1866 for $570 + S&H. Yes, that's quite a bit more than your total, but your listed system is actually below my 18 month old system. In my eyes, it's really apples and oranges.
If you can make use of the extra processing power, then I think $570 for an i7 system isn't all that outrageous compared to $260 for the board and CPU you listed, with 6GB of the listed DDR2. For comparison, I paid $575 for the core parts of that system 18 months ago - nF590 SLI board, X2 6000+, 2x1GB DDR2, and 8600GT video card.
If the X2 is good enough for what you want to do though, that's a few hundred bucks you're saving. No sense in buying apples if oranges are acceptable.

Re:Drivers... yeah...
Welcome to NForce2! I had the same problem.
Strangely enough the Vista beta worked perfectly on my exact same computer. So Windows 7 is a little more anal retentive than Vista.
Here's what you do. You download this: http://downloads.guru3d.com/NVIDIA-nForce-6.14-download-903.html
Extract it onto a thumb drive. And install the ethernet drivers from the WindowsXP folder. They actually work. As soon as you're online connect to Windows Update and Windows Update will find all the missing drivers for sound, "Athlon" etc.
(My experience with an NForce2 Motherboard k7Nsomething from MSI.) After that everything ran perfectly.
-
So how'd you solve it?
No kidding! I just ran into my first Nvidia heat-o'-death situation too.
Anyone know of an after-market part to draw air directly over your PCIe cards? This is a problem that's right now solved by the turning-my-graphics-card-into-a-jet-engine solution. It works, but if there's a quieter answer that keeps the graphics power I'd be happy to hear it.
Here's the skinny:
790i comes with 3 PCIe slots so I thought to try SLI with two new cards, and an older one (in the middle thanks to the bridge) for second monitor/TV. The poor middle card just doesn't stand a chance against two 260's, it's like an oven with both elements on.
I've been using RivaTuner to adjust fan speed and watch temperature. Outer cards run ok (44 deg C), but even at Max fan speed the middle card idles at 61, and at normal speed will die if anything tries taxing the card for more than a few minutes.

Re:ATI
Last I checked Nvidia did, but a single AMD HD4870 1Gb is quite powerful, and one of the few cards that does get a boost from the added ram, http://www.guru3d.com/article/amd-ati-radeon-hd-4870-1024mb-review/8 I don't know what the OC cap is though on the 1Gb version though, since I've seen the 512 go as high as 4.8Ghz, though 4.4Ghz is what most get stable at. the 4870X2 at release didn't have support for any of the open source games, I don't know the current drivers support though. I dunno about the Nvidia 9800GX2 though. But ether way I can't see the point in going multicard when one card can do the job for less cash, power and heat, since I've never seen where a dual card can get 2x performance, it only makes sense at 2560x1600 with everything turned up using cards in the top 2-3 models from either Nvidia or AMD to make it worth it, since often the slower cards can be outperformed by a single top of the line.

How to fix bloated ATI drivers :
1] Download full CCC installer.
2] Don't install the CCC, just the drivers.
3] Download a copy of ATI Tray Tools. -
Re:How many of those users CAN upgrade?
Opera's also CONTINUOUSLY maintained 0% known unpatched security vulnerabilities ratings @ SECUNIA.COM:
http://secunia.com/product/10615/?task=advisories
AND, for ages, before 9.27 model (way before in fact - whereas FF & IE are CONTINUOUSLY popping up NEW holes/exploits/vulnerabilities, & they patch them FAR slower than Opera's dev team does from what I have seen (I have actually worked WITH the FF team on one such bug in fact, they WERE fast about that one, fairly easy for them is why... others, though? We ALL know this is not the case... but, in defense of Mozilla/FF? They are FAR faster than MS is about fixing IE).
----
So, that "all said & aside" - Do I need to patch something that shows no known holes, vs. others like IE & FF??
Not really. Especially when Opera's dev. team literally PATCHES BEFORE THE EXPLOITS GET OUT IN THE WILD PUBLICLY, typically...
----
HOWEVER? NOW - FINALLY, FF in version 3.x is FINALLY @ 0%:
http://secunia.com/product/19089/
First time in years afaik, in version 3.01 (for now, until the NEXT bug crops up, & as quick as the FF team is in patching? They're usually a LOT slower than Opera's dev. team is, historically, year in & year out).
IMO & that of MANY others (a sensible one no less)?
FireFox's popularity is its own downfall here, though - less "security by obscurity", because just like IE is, it's used more by avg. users. Think malware writers don't KNOW & TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS? Well, if you were they, wouldn't YOU also target the biggest target there is, vs. the lesser used smaller targets (especially to make illegal monies & such via botnet infestations etc. of others' pc's? Of COURSE you would!)
(IE though, is only popular imo, due to it being incorporated into the OS, this is one move MS makes that I do not like - they rip off ideas already present in the freeware/shareware OR commercial market, & even attorneys are afraid to go after them, because they don't want to work a case that can be dragged out for 20++ yrs. in courts of law... in short, big money? Gets away with MURDER, nearly everytime, & we ALL know it).

If you look at this page: http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-4850-and--4870-crossfirex-performance/3 you can see that the latest generation Radeon 4850 and 4870 consume much less power than the power hungry peaks set by the 2900XT. The 4850 system uses less than 300W at full load. That's pretty damn impressive considering the ridiculous amount of performance it puts out.

Re:I don't understand nVidiaAll modern video cards already have EEPROMs on them. In fact, that's precisely how both nvidia and ati differentiate their "professional" cards from their "consumer" cards. Ease of 'hacking' apparently isn't much of a concern because cards from both vendors have been 'upgradeable' in this manner for more than a decade.
I thought this was a little bit of a stretch. But a little Googling popped up some interesting results. I haven't had a chance to look at this card but check this out: http://www.guru3d.com/guide/quadro-modify/
Seriously, this is so cool and I never thought about it before. Thanks for the tip!

Re:Just Pencil-in the Broken Trace
If you do, make sure to return the results to Tech ARP. Or post them in the forums of Guru3D, where the tuning app was made. Other people might be interested, and they did some hard work to create the applications.
Of course, if you look in the Guru3D forums, the hack isn't new, and I don't know what Tech ARP really did other than write a tiny article around it. Bring it in the spotlight I suppose.

Right here
I just bought an EVGA 8800GTS 320MB PCI-E last week. Despite what the OP says, it only cost me $263.99, not $400... and that was at a store. If I had patience and ordered it online, I'm sure I could have spent even less.
The REASON I got it? (1) I haven't bought a new desktop in almost 8 years and I needed a new machine that I wouldn't have to worry about breaking down for another 8 - 10 years to come. (2) I've never actually had a graphics card in any of the machines I've built before and, from my research (and other places), this one seemed the best bang for my buck. (3) I have no intention of getting a Wii or 360 or whatever; plus the fact that the current games I want to play and apps I want to use can't be used on a gaming console anyways.
You say my "cutting edge premium card is going to look overpriced and behind the curve tomorrow"; I say the same about your gaming console. -
Re:how on earth?
Sounds very reasonable to me. TCP/IP is meant to deal with a couple dropped packets here and there, but audio protocols are generally very sensitive.
I wonder how it affects systems where the networking is not on PCI (maybe an integrated northbridge component which is not glued to an internal PCI bus), or the audio controller is on a completely different PCI host controller (this scenario is practically unheard of on most x86 systems though.. would be intriguing to find out nonetheless :)
Ooh. Could it be that these systems are PCI Express and Vista UAA has been coddled to make PCI Express audio not such a bitch? http://www.guru3d.com/newsitem.php?id=3005 although as of last month or so, they seem to have decided they CAN do it without a bunch of the features; http://www.custompc.co.uk/news/115666/creative-unl eashes-pci-express-xfi.html -
Re:Sounds we can and cannot hear.Check out the Kx audio drivers. I can reroute my audio chip to send the frequency ranges and such (and much, much more) to other channels (using ASIO from foobar2k), and remix them just before compressing them to PCM that goes to my receiver. I usually filter out the highs to the front, lows to the rear, and vocals to center. There's a lot more in 2 channels than you realize if you take the time to pull them apart.
As for your assertion on my mechanical abilities, I'm in the process of rebuilding my 1969 Triumph Trophy motorcycle. As well as previous work on a 1965 Thunderbird... then again, I never could get the timing right on that thing and kept throwing rods. Perhaps you've pegged me on that one.
Any layer of mechanical work will only show an improvement if the layers below it are bottle necked by said layer; a 3 GHz processor won't do anything if it's bottlenecked on the front side bus and constantly idle waiting for data. -
Re:Shows how bad DX-10 really is
To me, this just goes to show what a bad standard/interface DX10 really is.
Eh?. DirectX is a thin wrapper over the hardware. The orignal DirectX gave you access to the physical frame buffer and blitter (DirectDraw), the 3d hardware (Direct3d). Most of the time, Direct3D was used to blast polygons from a buffer in the game straight to the hardware in the card which rendered them. These days, it's much more complex and different hardware does better at different things, because the designers concentrated on optimising different things. It's the same with OpenGL actually - look at the Doom3 performance tweak some guy released for ATI cards. The shader just wasn't optimized for ATI hardware.
The standards defines a bunch of primitives, some which the hardware must implement and some which are optional. The chip designers can implement them with a lot of hardware or let software do it, or anything in between. If they're lucky, they spend hardware on bits of DirectX which turn out to be important.
It sounds like trying to compare floating point benchmarks on AMD Athlon versus Intel Core 2. Depending on how you arrange the numbers and call the various floating point extensions can make all the difference.
In a funny kind of way, you can think of the x86 instruction set as being another thin abstraction layer over the actual hardware. And so a Core2 which is a more recent and more complex design does better than an Athlon on average. But you can still find some instruction sequences where Core 2 is worse than Athlon, I'm sure. Ones that depend on memory latency for one.
The point of abstraction layers like the x86 instruction set, or DirectX or OpenGL is to allow developers to develop common code which runs on a bunch of hardware. Then the end users can choose to buy hardware that can implement the abstraction layer by working out how much cash they want to spend, what applications' performance they care about, and which vendor has the best product for their needs. The alternative is that you buy a bunch of software written for AMD processors and ATI graphics hardware and if they slipped behind for a generation you'd be stuck.
The point of the abstraction layer is not to make a $20 graphics card perform the same as a $200 one, or even to make $200 cards from different vendors perform the same. It's so that they both look the same to software. -
High Quality PC Sound : Auzentech X-Meridian

High quality Audio from a PC...one card comes to mind and that's the Azuentech X-Meridian 7.1.
Forget Creative and it's junk I've used this soundcard for almost 6 months and it's fantasitc out of the box. With some OPAMP upgrades (I opted to do so) this rivals some rather high end equipment. A quick check over at avsforums proves my point. Just thought I'd put my $0.02 in here. -
Re:Ruse to sell more motherboards
PCI-Express is/was sorely needed to replace PCI for general expansion cards. PCI had a limited amount of bandwidth available that was extremely easy to saturate
Or, depending on your point of view, PCI is sorely needed to replace PCIe for many purposes. Ever wonder why there are no PCIe sound cards? -
Re:Soon enough.
We'll need water cooling for the water coolers. And then someone will get the smart idea to stick his whole tower in the freezer. Then nerds will become buff by moving around all their heavy equipment.
Putting your whole tower in a consumer refrigerator or freezer wouldn't work too well, because of the moisture and condensation. However, there are computer refrigeration units available for -50 deg. C cooling. -
