Re:check out fou4sWell, I have upgraded...but before with 8.1 I used apt4rpm. Basically it enables apt-get for rpm based distros.
There's even a special page for SuSE. http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/
I believe it will even let you upgrade to 8.2 ala the way debian does. However, I'm a bit scared to do that.

I use APT with SuSE and have found it to be excellent (although I can't compare it with other rpm distros that have apt-repositories).
I haven't used YaST to update since I installed APT4RPM, I get newer versions of important packages like Mozilla and KDE, I can update via a cron job and I dist-upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1 solely with APT, I also plan to upgrade from 8.1 to 8.2 this weekend or the next.
I've experienced very few problems using APT, although I imagine Debian's packaging works better with APT since
.debs are packaged with APT in mind and SuSE doesn't officially support APT.The documentation for SuSE APT4RPM is outstanding and thorough and the mailing-lists are helpful and informative.
If you use SuSE you should really be using APT as well.
I'm not on the project or anything, just a satisfied user!

i'm a suse 8.1 user as well, but i've never had a look at the live-evals.
however, i do know for sure that 8.1 included a ~16mb iso which i used to install via ftp. -

Both good points. I've seen some interesting work on controling electroosmotic flow so well that you can perform single molecule sequencing on dna.
Eventually lab-on-a-chip technology may make the equipment inconspicuous and cheap.
However, delivery is still a problem, since whether or not your mods will take is always a game of chance. I think that a small shop would do germline modification, and then implant the embryos into clients who paid for the superbabies.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but a lot of the funding is going into gene identification and mapping, licencing technologies like Human Artificial Chromosomes and systems to uptake the genes into cells. These are R&D, and so if the information is discovered, it does not need to be discovered again.
Once techniques come out of those projects, there might be little to stop people just stealing the technology and using it.
Or maybe we might get really lucky and have an open-genome movement where a body of techniques and data is released to everyone, and so progress goes forth at a much increased pace. -
Re:CLI - Resource Kit = wonderfulYes, you *can* admin a win2k domain from the command line. Even if you don't write in perl or {insert scripting lang here}, you have the resource kit available to you for all sorts of remote admin tasks.
A couple of links:

- The Microsoft Script Center. Hundreds (thousands?) of VB/WS scripts you can execute from the CLI. Browse!
- The PSTools Suite from Sysinternals. Excellent for filling in any gaps in Microsoft's lineup.
- And, if all else fails, The Unix95 pack with such nice things as 'which','cp','tail','gzip','nice',
... and many more, all for the WinNT/Win2k CLI.

Re:This is really cool and all but...Is dry ice possible at the extreme pressure of the deep sea floor? I know, sofar acknowledged he/she really meant Methane hyrdrate ice, not dry ice. Still, I was curious. I found this page, which has an account of experimenting with liquid CO2 at depth. At that pressure CO2 is liquid, and denser than water.
The clathrate the article mentions is a kind of slush of water ice with something else dissolved in it. So the methane hydrate we discussed is a clathrate too.

Single Bubble Sonoluminescence HOWTO
Since sonoluminescence dosent seem to scale up (to my knowledge) this seems like a moot point. It is sort of cool to have a cheap way to study micro-fusion though.

Possible Use...
Consider hooking this thing up to a Brownian Ratchet, such as discribed by Feynman in his lectures. (For those not familiar with a Brownian Ratchet, this page give a good introduction and a cool Java thingy to play with. See also R.D. Astumian: Thermodynamics and Kinetics of a Brownian Motor, Science 276, p. 917-922 (1997). Essentially, it works like a very small, normal ratchet. Molecules in the atmosphere hit the system randomly. Sometimes it goes "forward," but it cannot go against the ratcheting mechanism - "backwards" is locked out. So you get a net forward motion on the ratchet essentially for free from the atmosphere.)
Connect the Brownian Ratchet to this little chain thingy. Have it wind something up. User presses button, and thingy unwinds. Basically a free recharging system.
Not all that practical, but pretty cool. I'm sure there are better applications... (anyone?) -

By far the best fs-encryption I've encountered for Linux so far is ppdd. You can encrypt everything. It's a kernel patch that uses the loopback devices.

provides excellent, total, and secure hard drive encryption. Can't be beat. -
Re:SecurityI guess what I was thinking of included encrypting the hard disk. The BIOS could be reconfigured to a hacker's heart's content, but without the keys on the USB Key to unlock the hard drive, he wouldn't get anywhere (well, he'd still have your computer which would suck)
Your friend's solution of requiring a password on boot up to decrypt the disk is probably plenty sufficient (he's probably using PPDD). Really loses the sexiness of being able to carry around a tangible object that truly is the "key", however

I was on it earlier today. it should be ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/misc/nets cap e/netscape6/...there's no h in misc. The installer will tell you that there was an error retrieving the files (probably due to permissions on ftp.netscape.com). I was too busy to try downloading all the files from the mirror site.

To try out SuSE, I'd recommend grabbing the directory from ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/linux/suse/7.0 to an install server so that you get all the good crypto stuff. SSH is now a default, finally.
I'd also like to point out the fact that I completely forgot about VA Systemimager, which I have been investigating. From what I've seen, it looks really good, especially with ReiserFS support. -

Actually there is (was) programming language in Latin: kleio. It's a query language for a hierarchically structured database. It's mostly used by historiy scientists (good for getting family relations out of ancient domuments' transscripts i.e. Gandalf is the nephew of Thorndal who sold a wineyard to ...). Recent versions have abandoned latin, though.

Well, you can download the bootdisk and install it via FTP.
You don't even need to have a CD-ROM drive.Just read the FTP install HOWTO.
However, I'd strongly recommend not to install from ftp.suse.com, but from ftp.gwdg.de as due to US export laws the US server does not contain cryptographic software (such as ssh).Only the bundled commercial software will be missing (OSS, Staroffice etc.) of course.

Previous to this I lived in Honduras, which is listed as the sixth most corrupt nations in the world. Bribes in Honduras suck the country dry of any usable capital and hamstring the entire economy. The trickle down effect of bribes, feeding bribes, feeding bribes waters down any real value without producing anything (any good or service)!
I think the countries Woolsey is referring to most are Germany and France. While living in Central America, these guys played very fast and loose with all of the countries' natural resources there via a variety of NGO's and official aid agencies. Bribery was their modus operandi and I knew personally several Honduran officials on their 'payroll'. I also met a couple scientists who had first hand knowledge of German bribery funding Teak deforestation via an NGO in Indonesia.
For what it's worth, in my experience the countries that participate in this game always lose in the long run - and that includes both the bribers and bribees. Evesdropping may provide some short-term benefits in specific circumstances for more honest countries, but in the long run honesty pays off in direct, tangible benefits such as a vibrant economy and real wealth creation.
