"and one way to monetize your hosts file is to put a few bogus entries in that go to bogus "monetizing" sites" - by BarbaraHudson (3785311) on Tuesday August 19, 2014 @10:46AM (#47703255) Homepage
I don't "monetize it": I give it away so folks have more speed, security, reliability & more for FREE - it's the right thing to do. I have the ability to do so & it's better than ANY single competitor by far, doing more with less.
(ALL I let users add is their favorite sites (for speed, & reliability) + to import known bad sites or adbanners (for safety & speed) blocking entries from 12 reputable sources in the security community - & users control it, not I!)

1st of all: Who said I was attempting to "monetize it"? I give it away so folks have more speed, security, reliability & more for FREE... it's the right thing to do. I have the ability to do so & it's better than ANY single competitor by far, doing more with less.
Secondly: Who has "vetted it" per my subject-line?
The BEST in the security antimalware & antispyware business currently, http://www.av-test.org/en/news... who also host my program for hosts, per this test is who -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... , stupid!

P.S.=> Again: Face this challenge you've run from this week after you 'started up' with me yet again too, which you're running from since your big mouth has once again written checks it can't cash:

Oh, really? Then why'd you run from disproving my points on them giving users added speed, security, reliability & more here this week too where YOU started up your usual b.s. with me, then -> http://tech.slashdot.org/comme...
Hmmm?
(However - Seeing your libel, stalking and harassing me by ac posts and multiple sockpuppet accounts of yours exposed all thru this article's replies too = PRICELESS also & about time since you had it coming to you for YEARS now, only doing it to yourself)
You can't DO IT - heck: Aryeh Holzer of NOD32/ESET won't even *try* it http://it.slashdot.org/comment...
... & you said you've disproven me?... apk

Why's MalwareBytes' hpHosts recommend it
As "best of breed" @ the TOP of their page & hosts it for me too then? -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl...
(Now, *IF* that's a "bad reputation", then I'll GLADLY take it... as it's FAR BETTER than a disgustingly reprehensible cowardly little skulking "ne'er-do-well" trolling worm, like you!)
APK
P.S.=> Explain that (since you avoid it to no end): They are, after all, A RESPECTED PART OF THE SECURITY COMMUNITY ITSELF - thus so am I (long before most of your 'experts' in fact, since the mid 90's & I regularly "school them" as shown per my last post) + they host + RECOMMEND my work over all others!
You'll "evade this", & I've just made a "monkey" out of you (again)!
Of course - that's no "1st" either, now is it? No!
That's why you troll me by ac posts (too obvious, your favorite color just HAS to be 'transparent', since I can see right thru you, easily)... & thus, YOU fail again as per your usual, & of course, as per MY USUAL vs. your low self, I just HAVE to say it:
THIS? This was just "too, Too, TOO EASY - just '2ez'" - since I am, clearly, 110 times the man you are...
(It always is vs. "ne'er-do-well" trolls that open their mouths & insert their foot, washing it down with 'the bitter taste of SELF-defeat' vs. 110++:1 odds against their b.s. they spout!)

Illogical off topic failed ad hominem attack
Is ALWAYS the "last resort" of failed ac trolls, outnumbered 110++:1 as you were by my posts - as far as my ware being "bad"? How come MalwareBytes' hpHosts recommends it as "best of breed" @ the TOP of their page & hosts it for me here then? -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl...
Explain that (they are, after all, A RESPECTED PART OF THE SECURITY COMMUNITY ITSELF!)

APK
P.S.=> By the way: MalwareBytes' hpHosts has also helped me PROVE my ware is 100% clean & free of exploit of any kind vs. Norton/Symantec, McAfee/Intel, Comodo, ClamAV, & ArcaVir @ the JOTTI + VirusTotal online antivirus scanner tests - FORCING THEM TO RESCIND FALSE POSITIVES (of 80 total scanners there, only THEY screwed up & EXACTLY where I told them they did - on exe compression methods in 64-bit version, but my 32-bit version was always clean on ANY test & yet exact same codebase - I schooled the "experts", easily, also)... apk
-
Re:None of them.
I use this on my Android device with AdAway with tremendous success. I also use Android Firewall with some custom rules to block annoying apps from trying to send my data through servers in China, Romania, etc.
Here's my AdAway custom lists:
http://adaway.org/hosts.txt
http://hosts-file.net/ad_serve...
http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/...
http://someonewhocares.org/hos...
http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/ho...Use these, and you'll have a nice, clean, tight setup. I also use Squid on my LAN, and my router is configured to send every packet through Squid (custom iptables rules on the router; a Buffalo Wireless running dd-wrt), and on the Squid side, I block about 12,000 separate ad URLs, domains and sites, so again, the experience for anyone on my segment, is nice and clean and fast.
The side benefit of Squid, is that I can see every single request, phone home, ping, malicious or otherwise, that my devices try to do, and I can permit, prohibit, redirect or block entirely based on schedule, as I wish.
You'd be surprised how chatty a standard iPhone and Android device are, without "training" on the Squid/AdAway side.

You don't need to reboot... apk
In more modern versions of Windows reboot's not needed. Changes to %WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc hosts file alone signal to the OS to reload hosts (so does Windows File Protection, which you need admin rights in the case of overwriting & refreshing hosts as well).
Additionally this program of mine ( APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit) uses that source of yours (mvps) + 11 other reputable ones from the security community itself (such as MalwareBytes' hpHosts who recommend my program as "best of breed" @ the TOP of their pages and they host my ware for me also -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... )
A detailed list of all the benefits it provides through easy to use hosts creation & installation are here (as well as another alternate download site) -> http://start64.com/index.php?o...
* By the way - they can handle doing what you noted, they just want to sound like idiots so they make it sound "too hard to use" to less informed others unaware of hosts files many benefits is all... so do NOT let their crap "fool you".
APK
P.S.=> Enjoy the program should you elect to use it... it works, better + does more for added speed, security, reliability & anonymith than any other of its kind out there (bar none)... apk
-
It's recommended as "best of breed"
By Malwarebytes' hpHosts website (they host my program for me) @ top of their site -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... & is 100% clean/malicious code exploit free (they proved that alongside myself in fact negating "false positives" from Norton/Symantec, Comodo, ClamAV, ArcaVir, & McAfee/Intel from the JOTTI online + VirusTotal online tests (80 total, only those screwed up on it, & I proved them WRONG no less, on EXACTLY what I said they were wrong on, forcing them to rescind that accusation in fact - they didn't understand an
.exe compression method I used, in 64-bit only, 32-bit was ALWAYS ok by everyone))...APK
P.S.=> So, yes - you can trust it (& trust it does the job better than anything else, doing MORE with LESS, no less - especially vs. inferior browser adds, of which no single 1 or combination of them even do more for added speed, security, reliability, & anonymity + it even fixes DNS security issues in redirect bugs ala the Kaminsky flaw)... apk
-
This just *might* interest you also
For your Windows machines (build it there, use in *NIX too) http://yro.slashdot.org/commen...
*
:)(It's a "little less radical" than YOURS is, that is for sure... lol!)
APK
P.S.=> However - it IS "radical enough" to shear off BOTH IP Address based tracking (firewall rule table for
/. & other sites also vs. trackers of that type) & Host-Domain Name "meson shear" (lol) vs. that type of tracker (as well as other bandwidth hogs stealing your speed YOU PAID FOR, & security threats in adbanners) giving you more:1.) Speed (Adbanners blocked + your favorite sites hardcoded for local in RAM speed of resolution & reliability vs. remote DNS servers & their Kaminsky redirect poisoning flaws or being "downed" also)
2.) Security (vs. malicious threats of ALL TYPES including spam/phish/trackers + malware serving sites in script or executables, & MOST OF ALL the most advanced type of botnets in FastFlux + Dynamic DNS utilizing types),
3.) Reliability (vs. downed or redirect poisoned DNS servers)
4.) Anonymity (vs. DNSBL or dns request logs)
Enjoy: It's 100% free, no strings attached (like tracking), & recommended as "best of breed" by Malwarebytes' hpHosts site @ the top of their page -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... who also verified it as 100% safe & clean of threats of any kind...
... apk
-
Re:More hosts than that...
I'm using hpHosts:
# Download: http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... -
Don't put words in my mouth #3 of 3... apk
That I never said: Lastly - I practically "wrote the book" on "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" (1st guides for it) -> http://www.bing.com/search?q=%...
(Take a look there, they are ALL mine, from 2008 building on the originals that I wrote, the VERY FIRST SECURITY GUIDES for Windows NT based OS online @ NTCompatible.com, which you are free to verify with the owner there Philip or "the wayback machine" if you like, from 1997 onwards as well "APK Speed & Security Guides for Windows" OR if this link still exists http://www.speed-up-computer.c... ).
APK
P.S.=> It's up to you, but what I produced IS recommended as "best of breed" by the security community (top of page @ MalwareBytes' hpHosts site http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl..., & for a reason: It is, clearly, the best courtesy of "yours truly" & yes, it works + is HIGHLY EFFECTIVE vs. the worst threats out there now that there is (antivirus/antispyware reactive tech is not, symantec admitting they are dead tech even lately that's only 55% effective @ best/most) in FastFlux + Dynamic DNS utilizing botnets - period/fact - I can only point a horse to water - I can't make them drink though... apk
-
Nothing to "monkey with": You didn't do it right
It's even documented on Malwarebytes' hpHosts page on large hosts files http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... (& again - ALSO in my program too when you go to SAVE the file, warning you to turn off the dns clientside cache slow + faulty with large hosts files usermode service)... Thus, I must ask:
Did you actually USE MY PROGRAM, or just install hpHosts' file only?
As to your comment it's blocking "correct" stuff??
My program has known & RESPECTED site checkers section in its menus, built in!
Thus - IF you can show me some that are NOT coming up in those? I'll add to its filtering... taking THOSE OUT as "false positives".
(& I'll take that up with my 12 sources I use in the security community as well to correct for it (in the meantime, like I said - it's easy to control any you DO NOT AGREE WITH yourself, either in my program's rightclick menus, or via notepad (which I summon from that same menu to edit the results files))).
You're going to find that hosts are everything I said they are - especially vs. their "so-called 'competition'"...
APK
P.S.=> You sound relatively "new" to hosts "ins & outs" though, & that's ok - we all start somewhere on everything & get better/stronger as we go - as to MY being "abrasive"? Hey, look man - YOU started off cutting down my writing here -> http://news.slashdot.org/comme... & I took offense to it (especially considering YOU understood everything I said no less - looked like what trolls often do, completely off topic, as this is NOT "english class")... apk
-
How? I posted it: APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++
Recommended as "best of breed" by the security community itself (Malwarebytes' hpHosts @ the TOP of their pages for hosts data) -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl...
With details of what it can do for you of great value, for free + NO STRINGS ATTACHED (ala tracking like Ghostery or Crippled by default 'souled-out' to Google like AdBlock - which it does FAR more than either does for good benefit to you, mind you) by "yours truly", gratis...
*
:)(I wrote that all in my intial post you replied to initially here:
http://news.slashdot.org/comme...
Did you NOT see it? It's quite plainly visible, easily understood with decent detail as to how it gives you more speed, security, reliability, & even anonymity - FAR more efficiently than any single browser addon there is, with far more ubiquity as well!)
APK
P.S.=> Perhaps you need remedial reading tools since your reading comprehension is poor? See?? I can "play those games too"... & I find that your comments, again, are rather difficult to believe since you seem to easily understand everything I've written (& I found that comment COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC as would anyone + unnecessary considering you understood me also)... apk

Ahem: *cough* BULLSHIT *cough* #2 of 2... apk
"negating anyone who understands what you are going on about and dismissing known security software and experts" - by Anonymous Coward on Monday July 14, 2014 @12:37PM (#47449435)
What "experts"? Like Wladimir Palant of "Almost ALL Ads Blocked"?? He wrote me, 1st mind you, stating "hosts are a shitty solution" - I wrote back:
"Show us AdBlock can do MORE than hosts files do in terms of security, speed, reliability, & anonymity, & that they can do all that, MORE EFFICIENTLY than hosts"
LMAO - he RAN like a scared rabbit!
I did so, from 2 diff. email accounts in reply to his weak bullshit... he ran, & THAT, is that.
A big name PhD & former "co-worker" of mine a decade ago when I took him down a peg in Microsoft's Dr. Mark Russinovich on Memory Optimization tech unfreezing & speeding up Exchange Servers no less with MS' OWN DOCUMENTATION no less!
More recently an MS VP ADMITTING I'm right on hosts & MS made a mistake too -> http://slashdot.org/comments.p...
Even MORE recently (but this guy I admire even though his tech in reactive antivirus' is dying vs. webbound threats, when hosts do NOT) in Aryeh Goretsky of ESET/Nod32 won't take the challenge I put his way here -> http://it.slashdot.org/comment...
Symantec/Norton, McAfee/Intel, ClamAV, Comodo, & ArcaVir made mistakes calling APK Hosts File Engine a "virus" & I told them where they f'd up!
Guess what - THEY HAD TO RESCIND THAT false positive on the exact grounds I noted also, & declare me clean (MalwareBytes' hpHosts folks backed me up too + recommend my ware as "best of breed' vs. your b.s. -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... ).
APK
P.S.=> Your idea of "experts"? I outright SCHOOL regularly on this topic: Nobody can TOUCH me, & they know it (including you no balls off topic troll) - the "proofs thereof" are directly above (which the off-topic no balls ac trolling "likes of you" (the cowardly LOWEST of the LOW online) will NEVER, ever do (& you know it))... apk
-
This is the cure for it... apk
ZeusTracker along with my "APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit" -> http://it.slashdot.org/comment... - which guess what? Works on those hostnames/domainnames (subdomains too of course), with absolutely current data from 12 reputable & reliable sources in the security community itself.
APK
P.S.=> Enjoy - it's 100% free, no tracking etc. or strings attached, & works on "FastFlux" AND "Dynamic DNS" using threats (the worst kind & most advanced designs of botnets basically) & yes, REALLY works (recommended as "best of breed" by the security community itself in MalwareBytes' hpHosts site @ the top of their page here http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... )... apk
-
Time to tear you up... apk
Bloated? It's less than 1/2 the size of its competition hostsman AND DOES FAR MORE too, written by hand (not using a db engine as they do), with more end user direct control of said data AND with a 64-bit version also, which hostsman does NOT have.
It's also noted as best of breed by the security community itself here @ the top of their page (malwarebytes hphosts) -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... & they also helped me DISPROVE "false positives" from several major antivirus vendors as well!
(Who now ADMIT they are only 55% effective no less, ala Symantec -> http://it.slashdot.org/story/1..., one of those I disproved on a false positive on the VERY GROUNDS I noted in the link below - so much for "experts", I send THEM, "back to school", regularly), & based on a principle for security I developed that did WELL @ "CODING FOR DEFCON" in fact -> http://it.slashdot.org/comment... that really DOES work, for security (of an executable, PREVENTING it from spreading further infection signalling the user the exe has been altered in fact).
Good luck sorting, deduplicating, normalizing (for efficiency), & FILTERING (the hardest part) against false positives BY HAND, yourself... the data comes in daily by the MULTIPLE 1,000's - you'd be LUCKY to be done in a MONTH with 1 day's worth of data.
Try to do it with scripts? "Been there, done that" too, here http://it.slashdot.org/comment... on
/. with shellscripting kiddies who had to use the commands of others, & who made SUCH MASSIVE BLUNDERS I had to show them where they went wrong (ontop of them giving up, AND trying to get users to use scripts when WHAT THEY WANT, is "GUI click a button easy"...) - they'd have a LOT MORE WORK (I know, I did that work & faced it + overcame it) in filtering too. That's the TOUGH part.APK
P.S.=> In case you hadn't noticed? YOU HAVE BEEN SCHOOLED, chump... apk
-
Re:What a shame, but... apk
Malwarebytes hphosts rates him as best of breed at the top of their pages though http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... so he's not talking that good game as you put it. They are.
-
It's ontopic (& you're not, trolling)... apk
I'm also not selling it + it works! Quit off topic trolling. Edits of hosts by hand vs. the 1,000's to potentially MILLIONS of entries my 12 reputable sources in the security community supplies, by hand? Good luck to THAT too... & have fun (when you're done with a day's worth of data a month or more later, that is).
Prevention IS the best medicine - NOT "Reactive" failing tech like AntiVirus (which as I noted in my posts here, Symantec even admits they are only 55% effective in their antivirus nowadays, & AdBlock + other browser addons are horribly inefficient + don't DO a fraction of what custom hosts files can either!) - using hosts?
WHAT YOU CAN'T TOUCH, CAN'T BURN YOU (nor can botnets or other forms of malware communicate back to their C&C servers either - double bonus!).
APK
P.S.=> I merely make the job easy, with GREAT data sources (which you can alter as well by changing its
.ini file) & it's recommended as "best of breed" by MalwareBytes' hpHosts no less (a recognized security community member that hosts it for me no less) @ the TOP of their page no less -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl...... apk
-
Explain why you're an off topic troll?
I'm not going to DIGNIFY you with anything other than telling you what you know you are - pitiful.
* Being a troll harasser of others doing good by others (which I am in case you haven't noticed), is NO WAY to live your life.
Even you can benefit by hosts & my app that does the job on them BETTER than any competitor in browser addons by FAR on more levels more efficiently, & even vs. similar programs like mine!
(E.G. -> Does more than hostsman even, without using others db engines, & also in 64-bit too with MORE direct control of the data)
Mine's recommended as the best of its kind there is by a respected member of the security community in Malwarebytes' hpHosts site @ the top of the page they host my app for me on -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl...
I invite YOU & others, to OUTDO me!
Since none of you have managed to validly technically disprove my points on hosts here, ever, & for years - so learn to be OF SERVICE TO OTHERS - you'd be surprised where it takes you. Trolling won't...period.
You need to read this reply to your fellow troll & consider it, for YOUR OWN GOOD -> http://yro.slashdot.org/commen... & this + consider it, for your own existence -> http://yro.slashdot.org/commen...
I say this, because I can't hate you!
(Though you have "delusions of grandeur" imo, thinking you are the "SiDeWaLk-ShRiNk of
/." minus a license to practice, a degree in the psychiatric sciences, a formal examination of my alleged state according to YOU, "Dr. Quack the troll" (lol)) - I truly pity you & "your kind" (the miserable lowest of the low, projecting your own misery thru your reprehensible actions towards myself, & doubtless others as well)).APK
P.S.=> Per the film MAN OF STEEL said: It's ALL ABOUT the potential of every person to be a force, for good... try it. You'll probably LIKE it, better than trolling... apk
-
It's not only for editing is why
It streams in data from 12 reputable & reliable sources + is hosted (+ verified safe) by the security community where it is recommended as "best of breed" @ the top of said hosting site (Malwarebytes' hpHosts) -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl...
Then, it deduplicates and normalizes them for you: Try that MANUALLY with a text editor over MILLIONS of entries (since that is what you can potentially get) or even thousands, yourself, by hand.
It also reverse-dns pings your favorite websites so you get to them faster (faster than remote DNS resolutions) w/out the risk associated there in dns request logs, dnsbls, or Kaminsky flaw redirect security issues (of which 99.999% of ISP dns servers are NOT patched against, even when a patch has existed for ~ 7++ yrs.)
The data itself blocks ads (speed gain here too) & also secures you vs. all forms of malicious content online (malscript, malvertising, & known sites/servers that do so, blocking them out, thus, securing you) & helps vs. FastFlux &/or Dynamic DNS using botnets (which recycle/reuse domain names they paid for constantly by rehosting them on malicious hosting providers etc.) and also protects vs. spam/phish & trackers, etc. - et al.
For a FULL "rundown", visit its download link as to all the benefits it provides in added speed, security, reliability, & even anonymity (FAR MORE EFFICIENTLY than browser addons & even protecting you vs. DNS' shortcomings as well).
APK
P.S.=> Most of all, it makes this process GUI easy - which IS what users use & want, for decades now... apk
-
Re:Get your "hooked on phonics" lessons out
If something unwanted is on a particular domain, that entire domain is suspect and ought to be blocked until it is proven absolutely clean and free of malicious code threats. Apk's program's rated best of its kind by its hoster, a respected source in the security community (malwarebytes' hpHosts) too http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... and it's a far more efficient solution than adblock is tearing up 5gb of RAM and tons of CPU https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... and hosts do far more than any single browser addon for more speed, security, reliability, and anonymity as well. Can't beat that.

I'm under no obligation to do so
"Why don't you put your money where your mouth is APK, and let us see the code?" - by Anonymous Coward on Sunday June 08, 2014 @04:56AM (#47189351)
The security community's seen it (malwarebytes' hpHosts) & recommands it as "best of breed" http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... @ the top of that page, & tested it as 100% SAFE + CLEAN of threats of ANY kind (along with Norton/Symantec, Comodo, ClamAV, ArcaVir, etc. - et al from the JOTTI + VirusTotal online tests (00 of them).
Who are YOU by way of comparison??? Nobody, & certainly nobody I anything to for sure...
You also HAVE NO INTEGRITY, since you post "pure ac" making yourself unidentifiable, which speaks WORLDS about you, right there (you truly ARE a coward, & yes, a weasel)... period/fact!

Honestly - I'd like to know WHAT gave you the idea to say something this stupid -> http://slashdot.org/comments.p... about a program you clearly have NO IDEA/CLUE about in the 1st place.
Oh, your stupid statement of "no US server would host your ware" (etc.)? Plenty have, or do still. I don't CARE where the server is, as long as it works & is reliable.
Heck - the SECURITY COMMUNITY ITSELF hosts my ware HpHosts/MalwareBytes -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... recommending it as "the BEST OF ITS KIND", no less... so much for your libel you "ate your words on" you withdrew, eh?

P.S.=> By the way: Start64.com where my ware's featured IS 1 of only 2 I know of that do that, & they in PARTICULAR specific not only "64-bit compatible" (like another one out there that does allow that, in other words, 32-bit apps are allowed there that run on 64-bit OS etc.), this one TENDS TO SPECIFY the app has to have a TRUE 64-bit version OR port of it (why I use them only, exclusively - they're 1 of a kind afaik, & the future)... apk

Have PROOF of your further libel mmell?
I passed JOTTI & VirusTotal online tests & Malwarebytes HpHosts Mr. Steven Burn helped me CLEAR myself of FALSE POSITIVES from ArcaVir, Comodo, ClamAV, Symantec/Norton, & others... you can verify that with him, he's seen its sourcecode too, & is part of the security community THAT HOSTS MY APK HOSTS FILE ENGINE here http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... recommending it as "the best of its kind" no less!

Mmell - my program PROTECTS YOU vs. malware (if it does anything) for FREE by essentially using the principle of the forcefield really in "What you can't touch, can't hurt you",,, & yes it works.
Hairyfeet (/. user) can tell you the same!
In fact - He & I "had it out" on hosts files vs. DNS!
(Until I pointed out downsides of it vs. hosts such as the fact hosts can cure its problems - redirects by Kaminsky flaw since 99.999% of ISPs aren't patched vs. it oddly even though a patch has been around for more than 1/2 a decade++ now, & vs. "FastFlux" &/or Dynamic DNS using botnets + power consumption, CPU cycles, RAM, & other forms of I/O too being less with hosts along with electricity consumption).
So, He went to AdBlock & noticed his customers (owns a PC repair shop) didn't get infected anymore - & hosts do a FAR BETTER JOB of protecting you not only vs. ads, but also vs. known sites-servers/hosts-domains serving ads AND malicious content too!
(Hosts do more for the end user in added speed, security, reliability, & anonymity @ a faster level of operations BEFORE browser addons even BEGIN to operate!)

YOU FORGOT 1 THING (important)
Windows' dns clientside cache service "problem" w/ LARGE custom hosts files - After you disable that? The hassle you saw goes away, period/for good! In fact - read more about it, here (malwarebytes/hpHosts who also host my program there) -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download on the top left-hand side 2-3 paragraphs down, should you doubt me. You easily also make up for that since the hosts file is just a file, like any other, & the local kernelmode diskcaching subsystem will take care of keeping it in ram for you for greatest speed/performance! Performance that is just as good as the faulty with larger custom hosts files clientside dns cache service. (In fact, better, because it doesn't "lag you" like you saw in Windows, with the load/flush limited size structure the local clientside dns cache service uses in fact & it saves you resources allotted to a service with "issues" to put it lightly & yet to be blunt about it being faulty...) Fact: I reported it to Microsoft years ago - nothing was fixed. So, essentially, thus: I had to "fix it" myself! Its problem? It uses a fixed size 'buffer' cache (via loading into a C/C++ structure that is fixed size evidently), & FIFO queueing apparently as well, which causes the "lag" trying to load hosts that exceed its fixed size (should have been made dynamically resizeable). This is easily fixable in fact, but MS doesn't fix it. I did so by dispensing with that faulty service & instead relying on another subsystem for caching (saving the RAM, cpu cycles, & other forms of I/O the faulty dns clientside cache was using - "bonus").
APK
P.S.=> Performance is just as good, if not better, for caching hosts data, & simply because of saving resources used by that faulty with larger custom hosts files local dns clientside cache service in Windows - same as my last post also the "lameness filter" is being 'lame' to me too (forcing a few of my replies into a "block format" like this post too)... apk
-
You fail again Jeremiah Cornelius... apk
The local kernelmode diskcache subsystem will take over for you caching hosts file data (unaltered - which allows my top 20 to beat dns indexing up to 3 million or so entries mind you for my favorite sites) into ram, & then the IP stack also in kernelmode does the rest (as fast as possible, with least complexity). You fail again, Jeremiah Cornelius. You point out wasteful ways of doing it with dns (especially if setup as a separate system burning power you pay for), or the faulty with big hosts files Windows' dns clientside cache service. Especially for single system home users. (Should I post material from Symantec or O'Reilly on the note of speed custom hosts give you too, to back myself up here, not that I need to? I have before, just ask & "ye shall receive"...). What I find extremely amusing is watching you attempt to bury this with tons of ac trolling posts.
APK
P.S.=> Clue: You have to disable the faulty with larger hosts files local dns clientside cache service in Windows. This is 1 thing I will give Linux over Windows in fact (that, & the fact it can still use the smaller/faster 0 block address vs. even 0.0.0.0 or the largest/slowest of them all, in the loopback adapter address of 127.0.0.1. The latter 2 also create slower parse for load, and larger files - Windows can't, vista onwards, since "Patch Tuesday" 12/09/2008 & even Microsoft's then "Windows Client Performance Division" VP conceded this to me here on slashdot before -> http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1467692&cid=30384918 in Mr. Richard Russell who posts as Foredecker here). Learn something for Pete's sake since I have corrected you on this many times before. You can here on the left-hand side on the page in the hosts file installation section -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download from MalwareBytes' hpHosts (which also features my program too, bonus)... apk
-
Fact: You failed vs. APK 2x on that
Once here http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3673511&cid=43516405 + a 2nd time, here http://hardware.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3671613&cid=43514927
It's a widely known problem in Windows' known faulty DNS clientside local cache service with larger hosts files (you err in that mistake with the blatantly faulty dns caching client in Windows when using large hosts files).
So, turn off your local dns clientside cache service in Windows to solve your problem (also saving its cpu cycles, ram, and other forms of I/O it uses as apk also pointed out since it fails with bigger hosts files).
You can read more on it here http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download , to verify that much from MalwareBytes' HpHosts site (on the top left-hand side of that site's "hosts file installation" section there).
You might even LEARN something, since it's taken you "3 strikes/your out" times already, lol.

Your 6 points of "FAIL", ac troll... apk
"I decided to try with the DNS cache disabled. This isn't a good idea, as it forces uncached name resolution to be done for every single lookup" - by Anonymous Coward on Monday April 22, 2013 @09:41PM (#43521411)
#1 - It IS how you get past your stupid earlier mistakes (documented in my 'p.s.' below with links to them) of leaving the local faulty with big hosts files dns caching client service enabled in Windows - You can read more on it here http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download , to verify that much from MalwareBytes' HpHosts site (on the top left-hand side of that site's "hosts file installation" section there).
Take a read there - You might even LEARN something!
(Still - Nice to see you read my words in those 2 links I just posted in my 'p.s.' below though)
Linux has no such issue, & it is the 1 thing I will give it over Windows (that, & being able to use 0 as a valid blocking address too, VISTA onwards can't after 12/09/2008, since it's tinier it parses & loads + reads faster)!
---
#2 - The local diskcaching subsystem will cache the hosts file data into RAM, like any file can be (once you turn off the faulty with larger hosts files dns clientside cache service in Windows - saving the CPU cycles, RAM, & other forms of I/O it was using too: BONUS!), and , & keeps the hosts file, as is unaltered, that way in memory.
---
#3 - I architect my custom hosts file, thus:
20 hardcoded favorite sites I spend a good 95% or better of my time online at the TOP of my custom hosts file (so it is faster than DNS indexes up to past 2 million entries)
The rest are BLOCKED SITES (known bad sites/servers/hosts-domains that serve up exploits with data from 15++ reputable sites for it) - so WHO CARES HOW FAST THEY "RESOLVE" WHEN I NEVER INTENDED TO GET TO THEM?
That's roughly 1,968,340 on blocked known bad entries currently by the way (the majority of my custom hosts file here - all sorted alphabetically in THAT structure noted above, in blocks)...
---
#4 - By running from Ring 0/RPL 0/kernelmode, as the host file does for the IP stack itself (fastest mode of operations there is by the way), as well as being in-memory cached? You, fail.
---
#5 - Also - Don't you realize that making LOCAL in-memory cached requests on hosts files (with your favorite sites hardcoded into the TOP of it, which beats indexing up to 2++ million entries) is FAR FASTER than calling out to remote DNS servers? It is, by far...
---
#6 - Lastly, by blocking out adbanners (around 40% of the mass of every site's pages) you see TREMENDOUS speed-gains, as well as less threats.
---
Bottom-Line: You are LYING LIKE HELL, and you know it (on email, also noted & QUOTED below along with your earlier HUGE mistakes, lol!).
APK
P.S.=> You messed up on this 4x by now, like here http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3673511&cid=43516405 and also a 2nd time, here http://hardware.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3671613&cid=43514927

Fact: You failed 3x vs. apk on that
Once here http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3673511&cid=43516405 and also a 2nd time, here http://hardware.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3671613&cid=43514927 . This is your 3rd time/"3 strikes your out" clearly indicating an inability to LEARN on your part from YOUR MISTAKES!

You can read more on it here http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download , to verify that much from MalwareBytes' HpHosts site (on the top left-hand side of that site's "hosts file installation" section there).
You might even LEARN something, moronic ac troll that you are (for once, since it's taken you "3 strikes/your out" times already, lol).

Fact: You f'd up 3x on this, troll
Disabling Windows' faulty w\ big hosts dns clientside cache service solves it, as was shown here to you by APK 2 times already here http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3673511&cid=43516405 and also here too http://hardware.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3671613&cid=43514927 (which also saves the CPU cycles, RAM, & other forms of I/O that faulty with larger hosts files local dns clientside cache service used - bonus). Linux doesn't do that, but Windows has issues there with larger hosts files & its faulty local dns clientside caching service. Fact: You can read more on it here here http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download , to verify that much from MalwareBytes' HpHosts site (on the top left-hand side of that site's "hosts file installation" section there). Fact: In BOTH of the links I posted above also show you vainly downmodded EACH OF THEM (since they show everyone how ignorant you are in things TCP/IP and you tried hiding them BOTH with unjustfiable downmods with no disputing or disproving APK is correct there too).
