During the summers, I delivered pizzas. This was a hugely valuable lesson: without a college degree, I'd be delivering pizza for a long time. That's when I started to get serious about school. There was no way I wanted to continue in this noble unappreciated profession. This conclusion was echoed by one of my best freinds, who worked in a lumber mill to cover school. He was kind of half-assing it at school until he looked around work one day. He was surrounded by 40-year-old guys named "Lefty" who made $1 an hour more than him. Dude was the only guy in the room with 10 fingers. He decided right there that this was not going to be his future. He buckled down and got serious. 10 years later, based on the success of his startup, he retired.

My point, and I do have one, is that college is valuable time, but not in the way you think. The big big lessons aren't going to be in the classroom and they probably won't be in your major. Sure, you may learn linked lists and binary trees, you may learn the social structure of a Mayan village, but are these really things to base a life on?

While you're in college, take the time. If you're an engineering major, you're already down for a five-year degree. I recommend that you take six years and enjoy yourself a little more. Broaden your horizons. Take a pottery class, learn Russian, hang lights at the theatre, draw. All these things will enrich your life in ways that might not pay off for decades, but they will pay off. College is a time in your life when you have a great deal of freedom and very few responsibilities. Use that time. Waste it wisely.

You want me to put in baser terms? What are you going to DO with those programming languages? The actual applications are outside the Engineering building. Outside is where you learn what needs to be built. It just may be that you figure out that what the world really needs is a cheap open-source application for controlling theatre lights or kiln temperatures. The idea for the billion-dollar startup will come when you're doing something away from the computer.

Baser still? OK, ever notice how many women hang around the arts buildings? Ever notice how few there are in your engineering classes? Do the math, boys.

Maybe because Google doesn't actually have a monopoly in any of the product areas they compete in? Are you really going to argue that Google is the sole provider of email, online advertising, or desktop searching? The only area in which you may have a point is search engines (even though there are plenty of alternatives there, too). But guess what? It's not illegal to have a monopoly unless you use anti-competitive practices to acquire or maintain it. Since Google by all accounts has done nothing wrong, nobody is complaining.

I am interested in pursuing a career in documentation writing. What better way to earn experience than by writing documentation for open source programs?

I don't feel that I have the ability to write something along the lines of KDE documentation just yet. I would like to start with something small.

I would have loved to at least give it a try, but it requires you to log in using Microsoft Passport! Bad idea! I think many people are not willing to sign up for Passport - even for goodies like this...

You are correct, I have no evidence. I only know that it "happened" to occur as I was running Windows Update and that Windows Update "happened" to stall until I permitted the connection. I agree this is circumstantial at best, but interesting nonetheless.

First off, AVG scans daily and Adaware gets run once/week. Second, the "hotmail" machine in question isn't an MX server and won't accept connections on port 25 (SMTP). The connection attempt was on port 80 anyway.
Third, and most important, http://law15-f93.law15.hotmail.com:80/ redirects to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.

For those of you who are interested. It's called G-Mailto.

It is really simple. It associates mailto: html links with GMail. So when you see a link like this on the web:

You can click it and have the GMail compose window open up instead of something like Outlook Express that doesn't work with GMail. If you are not logged in to GMail it will bring you to the login screen and then redirect you to the Compose Page.

I'm using it right now on my Windows XP machine and it works perfectly. Supposedly works fine on Win9x/ME as well.

It's free, open-source, comes with an installer/uninstaller, and you can always switch back and forth between using it from your control panel. Under Internet Options > Programs Tab > Email. After you install G-Mailto, it will be in that list along with any other mail program you use.

Google's pretty up-front about everything, and given their attitude in general, I'm much more comfortable with them holding my email than I am with others. Frankly, I don't see the point of this legislation. For one thing, it precludes Gmail users from setting up frequently used searches (i don't know if gmail offers such, but under this law it couldn't).

The "evil empire" Microsoft has kept hotmail running for free for ages. Yahoo, I'm sure it's some sort of evil empire, has kept their free mail running for ages too. I could also list many other sites that give out free email addresses such as myownemail.com. I doubt Google would go and charge for gmail, although they might turn that 1gb file storage way down you'll probably still have your gmail address if you want it - just with more like 50mb space or what have you.

I'd love to hear about career strategy. I'm totally willing to bust my ass to earn the kind of money I'm worth. I'm using blackmagic37@hotmail.com to avoid spam to my regular account, but would be very interested if you're serious. Thanks! -Erik
