Re:Alien Influence
Say thankyou to HR Giger for that magnificent artwork.

Re:Hardly Need a Whole Book
Korn had some cool videos, but I was never a fan of their music.
But you gotta love that mic stand H.R. Giger created for Jonathan Davis.

Oh phooey
I bet most New Yorkers don't know how to run a Geiger counter (or possibly even what one is).
I for one have been counting gigers for years! -
Re:Why is the article tagged Sci-Fi?Same reason any article referring to any words used in Star Trek is, regardless of the facts that they're real science.
But to be fair, it wasn't just Slashdot pandering to geeks, most of the reports in normal (non-scientifc) media mention Alien in the first paragraph.
But a quick Google for "pharyngeal jaw" finds this is not unique to moray eeels, many species have them, just the moray's is unusually prominent and mobile.
And since we seem doomed to be discussing the movies here, I wonder now if HR Giger, who designed the Aliens, was aware of these? I'd thought he based the Alien on insect models, but he certainly was well-read in biology.

Cherry the Cow in GruyereNote. Most of this is pretty boring except for the last bit.
I was lucky enough to visit Swizterland this summer. Spent most of my time around Geneva. Saw the CERN visitor center, and saw the very first web server, a NeXT cube. Waited too late to get reservations in time to get the full tour. Anyway, this whole business of the cows eating trees to clear the mountain views sounds a bit odd. I really doubt the Swiss are that stupid. We went and saw the Matterhorn and the only thing that obscured the view was clouds. It finally cleared up enough so we could see 90% of the mountain. Zermatt was like a big Disney attraction with lots of Japanese tourists.
I visited Gruyere and saw the castle and the H.R. Giger Museum.. He's one sick puppy. Had a beer at his Giger Bar. That was cool. Gruyere is of course famous for it's cheese. We took the took the tour of the cheese factory at the base of the mountain. We had an electronic device that we could punch in a number and hear the narration for each station. Our narrator was Cherry the Cow. She informed us when drinking her milk you could taste EVERYTHING she's ever eaten.
Thank God we don't drink dog's milk or we'd be able taste everything they've ever eaten or excreted and eaten or vomited and eaten or drank out of the toilet. -

Re:I snortled your chir-blek!
I read Perdido Street Station and although the language was often alien, I thought that this was one of the few places its use was justified. So often when SF writers try to write about creatures that are outside of human experience they end up being humans in other guises, but Perdido Street Station managed to make some of those characters the best realized because they were so strange.
Unfortunately, I found I didn't care enough for the more human characters to give a damn what happened, so in the end I thought the story was weak enough that I don't recommend the book, but the dense prose builds the best Giger-esque world I've read about.
So, yes the prose is dense, but it works. I won't be picking up the current version because I think that the story skills aren't up to the storytelling skills. -
Re:Giger
For people who aren't aware, H.R. Giger came up with the ideas for the alien monster. The reference to the face hugger modeled after a vagina is probably very true.
I picked up a book of some of his work in the bargin bin. It's kind of odd to see Alien type artwork mixed with nudity (or even pornography).

Re:Doesn't surpise me...Both Dune movies were disappointing in their own rights. The first made a mess of the story and threw out H.R. Giger's brilliant art direction. The second was a made for TV melodrama, and it showed.

Giger....
I am getting flashbacks to when I saw H.R. Giger's work when I saw that deformed skull on th left! It's Aliens all over again! http://www.hrgiger.com/

This isn't just about Aliens
This isn't an Aliens theme so much as it's an H.R. Giger tribute. The alien theme was only one of his works...

GIGER, anyone?
Reminds me of H.R. Giger stuff, oh the possibilities!

Possibility of the Other Books
The reason that I am really looking forward to this mini-series is that it opens the possibility of the other books being put onto film as well. I think the sci-fi channel probably will be able to do that if the response is good; however the Dune universe is an immensely complicated one (just look at the now out of print Dune Enyclopedia).
One thing that is unfortunate is that H.R. Giger did a bunch of preliminary design work for the Lynch movie that was never used. It doesn't seem to have been used for this film either. Partly because I think that Giger is probably fantastically expensive, but it is still unfortunate. He did a lot of work on the Harkonnen (of course). Examples of his work (and a little blurb about work on Ridley Scott's Dune) in the movies section of Giger Page . You can even see the "Harkonnen Chair", and buy one I think. They are the chairs in Giger bars.

Re:Aeron, of course
You want an alien chair. From H. R. Giger
