Re:Already used in the UK
I'm sure that http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093894/ was a great movie, but I don't feel like clicking on a stupid obfuscated link just to know you are talking about The Running Man.
p.s. The book was a million times better, but there was no GPS tracking. In the book, the game show relied on defaming the hero's character and manipulating the public into turning him in.

Re:Already used in the UK
Prisons may not be perfect, but they are the best solution we have yet come up with.
Yup, "yet". But maybe this is the time where we actually do come up with something better. It doesn't make sense to slap a bracelet on a mentally deranged serial killer, tell him "watch it, cause we're watching you" and send him back onto the street. But doing the same with a shoplifter might actually be better than putting him behind bars for a while, having him loose contact with the real world. He may not be able to to any harm while in prison, but when he gets out, chances are he's not thinking "wow, that really taught me something. I'll never do it again."
To quote George Jung in Blow:
"Danbury wasn't a prison, it was a crime school. I got in with a Bachelor of marihuana, I got out with a Doctorate in cocaine."

Re:Already used in the UKRunning man? Really?
This is a lot more like Rutger Hauer's Wedlock (1991)They even had the enforcement in place - using explosive charges...

How about this one then, from 1991: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103239/

Single point of failure
What you must do is connect the device with an other prisoner, but in such a way that they do not know who the oter one is and if they are too far from each other, the device will explode

The Wave
It reminds me of a very insightful German movie "The Wave" (original German title "Die Welle") http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1063669/
A history teacher proposes to his students an experiment about dictatorship. See what comes out of it.

Terrorists existed back then too...
They were called resistance fighters, partisans and commandos back then.
There was recently even an American Oscar winning movie glorifying such terrorists.

Sulley: No.
Mike: How about Wet Dog?
Sulley: Yep. Stink it up.

Re:Hmm...
At least it wasn't yet-another re-make of a '70s or '80s TV show or movie,
It was. You may remember a film called Fern Gully: The Last Rainforest. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104254/ Ok early 90's, but still....

Re:I gotta say
If just watch Dreamscape, will it work the same?
-
Re:Really?
It didn't have a happy ending or great production values, but
.. you haven't seen it and I have so I can act as savvy and cultured as I like and look down my nose, and isn't that what seeing movies is all about? If your movie tastes run in that direction, I recommend Hunger by Steve McQueen (no, not that one).
Definitely not light and fluffy, but a movie I couldn't look away from (even though at times I really wanted to). YMMV of course, but it's a movie with the among most minimal sound-track and dialog I've ever seen.
Anyway, random suggestion. Take it for what you will.
:-P -
Re:The 10-year-rule
Define "better". A Clockwork Orange wasn't supposed to be pop-corn entertainment, that's why, at Kubriks request, the film was withdrawn from the UK. In terms of life experience, the majority would agree that Clockwork Orange was a better film.
You can clearly see on IMDB that Avatar (118/250) is on it's way to obscurity. Eyes Wide Shut isn't there but every other major Kubrik film is. It therefore appears that your views run counter only to popular culture. The suggestion you could have a double negative take on culture is absurd

Re:unexplained??
Or better yet, Red Dawn

Re:What a coincidence
I know your comment was tongue-in-cheek, but if you've ever watched the documentary The Corporation, they do a very interesting comparison between incorporated business (as a legal "person") and the technical DSM-IV definition of psycopathy, with some disturbing results. I know it's not the most unbiased documentary ever, but it does at least raise some poignant questions about the mental health of these "people" we have created in the name of progress (and... ?? profit!!)

Re:already done
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078446/ I ran across it on an HD movie channel, and though that the various live location shots of the 1970's was more interesting than the movie.

Missing Time Tunnel
I notice that Time Tunnel is missing. I don't think the list is restricted to good episodes and movies. Maybe including that would make the visualization too messy.

The Great American Traffic Jam More to the point and much funnier, with a stellar b-list cast! The epitome of the 70s car comedies. (Not on DVD? WTF!)

Re:Rather stupid...
I just followed a few links from the one you've given. And yeah, apparently there is a national intranet in North Korea Kwangmyong with 'free' dial-up access. I wonder if anyone getting on that network is being monitored.
Anyway this whole thing looks so deliciously similar to a network in movie Avalon. Actually it's like that movie is reenacted in real life in North Korea. Oppressive communist government? Check. Network somewhat accessible to the general public, from whimsically unreliable terminals. Check (I got a hunch that all the network equipment in NK is old an whimsically unreliable). Brain-computer interface. Not so much, but I believe in the movie it was more of a plot device than anything. -
Re:Just because it's patented...
I call moo. If you have placed a script on your phone I don't see you kicking in the door to some skells apartment (It wouldn't be the first time I was wrong though) after getting a GPS fix. Are you going to give it to the cops? What are they going to do, they might not even know what a GPS is and they would have to get a court order and some experts to look at your script and proof of ownership. That is, unless you are the rare type of geek and have an OTV with SAPI plates and a M1014 JSCS AND know how to use them. (I know there is no way to show I have that stuff in my locker downstairs, mine is an FNH not a JSCS, but oh well). I am all for it if you can pull a Buckaroo Bonzai

Re:Stephenie Meyer is a talentless hack
So Hollywood caters to those who it appeals to, and now we have Zombie Strippers!
-
Re:Stephenie Meyer is a talentless hack
They made a comedy like that, back in the 90's: My Boyfriend's Back A couple other low-budget ones I can't remember from the 80's, too.
Can't remember any serious/emo ones, though.

Re:Timeless saying applies here...
A fair point, but I would say that the number is at least one, maybe two orders of magnitude too low. $7000 is pocket change, probably less than the red team paid to fly there (wherever 'there' was). It says that a sysadmin would sell out what must be viewed as a multimillion dollar asset (not to mention their self-respect) for pennies on the dollar. To me it means that the sysadmins had no respect for their jobs, their profession, their responsibilities. If you're going to be a sleazebag crook, at least do it for what it's worth. If you steal a Mercedes you don't sell it for $100.
Or that those sys-admins feel like Peter Gibbons in office-space so they see it as an opportunity to cash in.
Just saying...and there are a lot of thieves that would sell the Mercedes for $100 if it means easy out of the situation. -
Re:hmm..
M. Night Shiamalan will probably make a stupid movie about this.
Didn't he make the movie already ? It sounds vaguely like The Happening, as memorable as that was. At least it could be construed as such.

Kurzweil documentary on The Singularity
Ray's documentary about the Singularity has been touring the national film festivals along with Ray. I saw it June. Its begins as a dull-talking heads piece about the current state of A.I. Many of the Big Name A.I. Scientists are interviewed. Then it transitions into a crime-drama story about the legal rights of A.I.s. That part was more interesting, since it had a story. The film is full of special effects to advance the story. Although I know most of the film to be factual, I suspect it will look like a scifi movie to the average audience member. I think Ray is seeking looking at broader distribution on cable television or arts theaters after the festival run.
Ray was interesting in person during a film-makers Q&A. He reminded me of Woody Allen, but more confident and intelligent. He was graduated from M.I.T. about decade before myself. I personally believe in the Singularity, but more likely in centuries rather than decades. -

GNAA unveils new wiki-based corporate website
Today GNAA President weev shampooed his neckbeard, put on a greasy Linux t-shirt and left the warm glow of his spamcave to unveil the new GNAA corporate website in a keynote speech. "Inspired by the success of wikis like Wikipedia as platforms for spreading misinformation and infuriating trolls, we decided to transition our corporate webpage to the wiki format," said weev in between gulps and disgusting chewing noises as he stuffed his face with summer sausages and snack cakes to gain the calories needed to satiate his anxiety at being confronted with other human beings. "Jimbo Wales and his team of basement dwelling pedophiles have really taken the wiki platform leaps and bounds in propagating biased, inflammatory garbage. You can log on Wikipedia at any given moment and start or join some inane troll battle that amounts to semantics. They even manage to present defending child molesters as an encyclopedic pursuit while making active pedophiles who host child pornography paid members of their staff. I can't think of anything more offensive. I'd like to take a minute to recognize Wikipedia as one of the most wildly successful troll organizations on the planet."
Weev went on to deride the agents of Zionism on the Internet. "Of course, we couldn't possibly go with MediaWiki. Everybody knows that PHP is run by the Mossad. As a consistent promoter of racial equality we couldn't let our Wiki be subverted by Zionist control." He went along to praise the python-based framework the site now operates on. "We went with Trac primarily because it is written in Python. As you all know, Python is a fascist with whitespace. As an organization of black men, we do believe that whites need to be regulated in their spaces very carefully. All hail the prophet Mohammed, and the messenger Malcolm X." At this point weev made a fist in the air before switching his comfort food to fried chicken and watermelon. "May Allah bless us, and bring us to the day when we may see constant troll edit wars on our wiki, just like Wikipedia.

Junk newspaper
Aftonbladet, often nicknamed "Aftonhoran" ("The Evening Whore") is a miserable tabloid of nearly non-existent intellectual value. A typical issue looks more like a prop from the movie "Idiocracy" than a real newspaper from a civilized country.
Even a quick glance at its website clearly reveals its true values (or lack thereof), even to those who aren't native Swedish speakers.

Re:Now it's "Julian Assange, Intelligence Analyst"
Just watched "9th Company" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0417397/
The phrase: "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it." comes to mind.
Also: "Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed." as I am sure all the military brass were thinking that with all their advanced weaponry that this would now be a cake walk against such primitive savages. I wonder what they think about a determined foe with the ability to make simple IED's now?
