Considering his age - and the cause that he will in all our minds be "The Spock" he will have a hard time to drop it completely.

I agree that the Feds created a situation where obesity became so common, by 1) subsidizing the production of crap food, as detailed fairly well in the documentary Food, Inc. , and 2) creating a welfare system that perpetuates laziness and ignorance.

However, I think the Havasupai bear a significant portion of the responsibility, because nobody is forcing them to stay in that lifestyle.

I've been to Havasupai (which is actually in Havasu Canyon, not the Grand Canyon, but they are connected). It's known locally for it's really beautiful falls (Moody, Havasu, and Beaver). If you remember the Indian village from Next , that's the place.

While I was waiting to get helicoptered out (you can hike ten miles, or fly, there are no roads) after my girlfriend twisted her ankle, I got to watch for three hours as the locals flew in from their shopping trips. I do not remember a single one who was not obese. Most were morbidly obese. And the crap they were getting off the helicopter was, well, crap. They subsist on a diet of Hot Pockets, Cheetos, and Pepsi. They don't farm, they don't work, they do all have satellite TV, though.

Morbid obesity, a high-fructose corn syrup heavy diet, and a sedentary lifestyle are all factors for an increased rate of diabetes.

The other reservations in AZ that I've visited are primarily agrarian (with a few casinos), so for the most part, they're eating healthier foods, and they're out there performing physical labor to cultivate the food. A good diet, and plenty of exercise reduce the risk of diabetes.

The fourth episode of the show, Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride spoofed being gay in general, and that goes on quite regularly still--Mr. Slave and D-Yikes! come to mind.

In NYC there is a sweatshop tour in Chinatown, a historical building that's like 100 years old. At one point the guide points to the smoke from the current shops. Some will actually resort to locking doors and putting in high walls and guards, but it generally apparently isn't the most effective method, trickery and lies work better. In fact many companies, armies, managers, use similar techniques to gather lots of cheap, dedicated, qualified labor. Pressure, threats, lies, false promises, legal trickery, indebting, contracts. Soldiers and salesmen are the victims and perpetrators of the same grand scheme, generally to the advantage of a few insane maniacs, ignorant also. Full Metal Jacket sort of illustrated that. The UN and many institutions have anti-slavery campaigns to this day. I heard slavery in fact is growing.

The workers also sleep on site, in factory dormitories, with 14 workers to a room. They must buy their own mattresses and bedding, or else sleep on 28in-wide plywood boards. They 'shower' with a sponge and a bucket.

Why is this different than any other company that has it's goods made in China. Maybe the OP and the articles author should watch the movie Manufactured Landscapes they would realize that this is pretty much the status quo for all factories in China no matter how big or small and what kind of goods they make. Hell even kitchen appliances are made in conditions like these so it's not just the tech sector that is to blame or one specific company.

To anybody that hasn't seen this movie, it is a great artistic portrayal of Der Fuhrer in his final days, and provides insightful dialog regarding the mentality of the Reich's higher ups during the final days. It is an extremely dark and gritty movie, but the angle it presents is something alot of American history books and entertainment tend to neglect.

I saw the original movie, Der Untergang, which is its original German name, in my German Studies class in high-school, and recommend it to anybody interested in more than just Godwin's Law. Watch it. Must See.
