Re:Reach for the switch...
How often do they do these tests?! Is there a class of scientists getting paranoid that hamsters might take over the world if we let our guard down?!

Re:Science Fiction!
You definitely don't live in the same Brazil I do. You must be thinking of that movie from 1985.

...thank you, that was a pleasant distraction. For anyone curious:

Re:I'm already a victim of these tactics
Yesterday I received a DVD in the mail from an obscure group known as the "Clarion Fund." It was a hatchet job meant to scare people about the evils of muslim extremism.... The shocking part was that they somehow had my full name on the address label.... The joys of living in the swing state of VA....
This was reported on a little while ago in at least one online publication. It was called "Obsession".
I think when we get around to admitting that we're horribly racist and xenophobic in America, we'll be better off than that "open to everyone" crap we try to peddle to the rest of the world.
The very idea (demonstrably false though it may be) that a major party candidate is a Muslim shouldn't be a detractor from them holding the presidency, but as it has been used as a smear...

Re:Skydiver
Man, that show had a *lot* of sideburns and 'groovy' music!
And hot chicks, just the purple hair was nasty.

Prescient movie explored this concept 30 years ago

Re:PS3
they did, it's called "Infernal Affairs." there's actually a whole series of them that came out long before The Departed was made.
-
Re:And that's why it won't be better there...
I was thinking of Ephraim Kishon's "Blaumilch Canal" when I wrote that comment. That you realized there might be some problems with that plan is only fitting and does not deserve a troll rating at all.

Anyone seen the movie "Brazil"?
This story sounds quite remarkably like the beginning of the movie "Brazil".

Confusion ensues

Re:TinfoilHat is much better
Don't forget the floor and to duct-tape the doors and windows.
No, no, no, it has to be red construction tape!

Re:Suggestion
Kinda like this. Oh, wow, culmination in a reality show taken to the next level.
After the recent debates we(US'ians) know it its certain that the illuminati are not only tedious and uninspired but they can't even make original, decent movies. [note: illuminati==American government==Hollywood] -
Re:Friday
"No. No, of course not. We find it's always better to fire people on a Friday. Studies have statistically shown that there's less chance of an incident if you do it at the end of the week." Office Space tactics at work me thinks. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0151804/quotes

Re:re-write
In space, no one can hear you.. cum? what? Don't you mean in space no one can hear you cream?
AAMOF that's the tagline of Space Nuts.

Re:spell my name in all caps
I'm pretty sure that statement was around a long time before 4chan. Just because they pick it up doesn't mean they invented it.
And aside from that, as is said in Enemy Mine, Truth is Truth.

How much did this case cost? From following the second link and looking at all of the legal filings, it appears that Jacobsen, as plaintiff, easily incurred more than $100K in legal fees in trying to assert ownership of his own work. Did those funds come out of his own pocket? If so, how many of us could afford to take on a similar fight to protect our own work?
In a timely coincidence, the film Flash of Genius is opening today. It tells the story of how Ford stole the invention of the intermittent windshield wiper from Dr. Robert Kearns, and how Kearns fought back (at considerable personal expense).
We also know that RCA and David Sarnoff stole the basic invention of television from Philo Farnsworth. It took more than 10 years for Farnsworth to win the right to royalties for his invention. Aaron Sorkin wrote a play, "The Farnsworth Invention", based on this story.

Re:4759 is a prime number
I prefer the law of eights. It makes more sense of ALL of this.
-
Re:4759 is a prime number
4+4+3+3 = 14
1+4 = 5
5 = 2+3
2+3 -> 23
It all leads back to The Number 23 -
Re:Completely off-topic
This story, for example, apparently has zero comments.
Here I was thinking I could get a Turk related first post
:( At least Hiarcs almost rhymes with Turk. I didn't actually realise that the name was a reference to this - should have known what with the rest of the series being full of references. Is anyone really surprised that a computer beat a human grandmaster twice in a row? As computers get more powerful, it is inevitable that they will completely outclass humans in games with perfect knowledge. There were times when Kasparov fooled Deep Blue's algorithms a couple of times (presumably giving it a piece or two in return for a square with significant strategic advantage), but they just trained it so that it wouldn't fall for those tricks again. I honestly wouldn't be surprisd if a grandmaster never won a tournament game against a chess supercomputer ever again.

Re:Trying to avoid funny remarks...
It's been done
:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0310288/
"Nick Lang and Silvia Saint's sex scene was filmed in free-fall aboard NASA's "vomit comet", in order to simulate zero-gravity."
So, if Virgin Galactic does not want to make history let NASA do it. Porn in the ISS -- "Where No Man Has Gone Before". Now, the question is obvious: is that title more suitable for anal fun between men or would the title be "fitting" for some female-female or male-female anal action (there have never been vaginal virgins in space, most likely)?

Re:It's a hoax, people.
For those who don't get the reference, he's talking about a movie called The Last Starfighter. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087597/
-
Damnit, we already made up the title for it!

Re:Or weather, or health related
Ditto, although it should be noted that back when I always made sure I had 2 $100 bills stashed in my wallet (...), this was before you could use debit cards anywhere. Nowadays there's no point -- it's been years since I've seen anyplace where I couldn't just swipe a card aside from gum ball machines.
And besides, gum ball machines also tend not to take Benjamins.
Jack Walsh: You wouldn't have change for a thousand, would ya?
Cab Driver: Whatta ya, a comedian? Get outta here, you bum!
Jack Walsh: Looks like I'm walkin'.
-- Last lines, Midnight Run (1988)(Circulation of high-denomination bills (>$100) was halted in 1969 by executive order of President Richard Nixon.)

If we already write them as xxx.yyy.zzz.ttt, why we stop at 255?
The answer is, we don't. For an example of an IP address with numbers going over 255, watch this movie

Re:But will it be a WoW killer!?!?!?
The way you describe the getting stuck in worlds and having to change worlds reminds me of that movie with John Ritter where he buys Cable from the devil. He gets sucked in and tries to survive all the different channels going after the remote to escape.
Stay Tuned is the name of it. -
I thought . . .
we live in an airport locker, like in MIIB.

Re:Prior art.
The estate of Sir Arthur Clarke and MGM might have a thing or two to say about attempting to claim 2010.
No such thing as prior art - it's trademark law. Which in the UK (not sure about elsewhere, suspect it's similar) can be boiled down to "you can't use this word or phrase in a context which is likely to confuse the customer into thinking you're somehow linked with some other organisation which has trademarked it."
Hence I would probably be in trouble if I set up a mail-order office supplies company called "Viking Office Supplies Ltd" because of Viking Direct but the radio station Viking FM is perfectly OK.

I don't know how Aussie laws, culture, or taxes work, but I saw this on HBO!*disclaimer*
I have full respect for the Aussie military that I have had the pleasure to interact with. I may have felt bruised and battered afterwards, but have always left feeling 'partied out' in a good way!P.S. I hope this post is taken as the tongue-in-cheek nature I had intended!?!?

Don't you know it is just DISTURBIA
It's a thief in the night to come and grab you
It can creep up inside you and consume you
A disease of the mind it can control you
It's too close for comfortIt all starts with slashdot and the messages filter out from there. We must all follow them. MUST!!!!! Pay attention!!!!!!
Hasn't anyone seen what THEY do to people? What is wrong with you people?????
Non-Sequitors rule my life I am doomed doomed because all I see is dots, slashes, and messages. Little tiny bits of information but if YOU PAY attention you may learn the true message. THEY ARE WATCHING. Someone must watch the watchers.
Sorry just had to post some garbage that would correspond to the parent. What is this? Is this really Slashdot? I mean wtf?

Beyond Konami.
Sounds like the narration of one of those horrible 80s space pornos.
Lifeforce, not just for 8-bit game geeks.

Here's a Double Devil Dare for him
Heh. This is just like a NZ Movie;
"This is the ass end of the world. The land below you is called New Zea-land. There's the North Island - that's the good one, and the South Island, which sucks. Between these two imaginatively named islands lies a stretch of water known as the Cook Strait.
"People have swum and sailed across this straight, and thousands cross it every day by plane and ferry. But only one man has ever tried... to jump it."

Re:Not even conspiracy
For more on cognitive dissonance and it's effects, please see 2001:A Space Odesey.
Syncing up Pink Floyd's "Echoes" with the "Jupiter & Beyond the Infinite" segment of the film is optional, but highly recommended. Or recommended high. -
Re:I prefer the old definitions:
You must be thinking of Charlton Heston in The Omega Man. He also starred in Touch of Evil which is nothing to do with Google, obviously.

Re:Kernel Panic!!!
Awesome, if you really didn't know it is a reference to the 80's cult hit movie "Heathers":

Re:sensors...
That eventually leads to a system where every human is a terrorist, at least according to the machines.
-
Re:BSDM?
A typo. In case you really don't know: BDSM, bondage/sado-masochism. People who are into that sort of thing usually have an agreed-upon safe word which they use instead of "stop" and which is unlikely to be used in that context, so that the "master" can safely ignore their (playful) begging. If they really want to stop, they speak the safe word. How do I know? Eurotrip.
The hardware equivalent of a safe word would allow the card to ignore instructions to overwrite flash memory until a certain side-condition is met. That would make accidental overwrites less likely but still allow malware to exploit the flash writing capability to destroy the board.

Val Kilmer & PopCorn
anyone else reminded of that Val Kilmer Movie from the 1980's "Real Genius" Filled up a house full with popcorn using a laser mounted to a plane. I wonder if this is the new wave of anti-terrorism. Popcorn and Val Kilmer Movies? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089886/
