Re:US jury system does it againAgreed, seems to me though that most lawyers would kick us pretty quickly. I do not get the impression that lawyers want smart thoughtful people on a jury. If one side wanted you the other side would certainly likely NOT want you. Yeah, I watch ALL of the CSIs but I spend half my time bitching about the inaccuracies - watching it now actually! Try watching Law and Order. IMHO, it has better dialog, better stories, better acting, etc. Plus, LO:SVU has Freakshow.

Re:Down here...
There was a famous murder case where the murderer dissolved people in acid because he misunderstood habeas corpus to mean it was impossible to convict someone of murder if the victim's body could not be found. He was completely wrong of course and got pwned by the noose.

Re:He'll do a good job
Of the movies listed, Pan's Labyrinth certainly gives one the most hope for a movie worthy of The Hobbit. The style will be a bit different from Peter Jackson's, of course. What I would hope for is that the director be as big a fan of Tolkien as Peter Jackson is. Is del Toro this dedicated to the books? Also worth noting is that The Hobbit is less heavy in tone as compared to the Lord of the Rings... more thought of as a children's book, while still introducing themes and characters that would later be more heavily and darkly developed in LOTR. Having seen Pan's Labyrinth, I am cautiously optimistic that del Torro _may_ be a good candidate to strike this balance if he can keep from making things too very dark. What I'm wondering, is what on earth is "The Hobbit 2" supposed to be? It is now listed on IMDB for Del Torro along with "The Hobbit." Are they splitting the book in half or what? http://us.imdb.com/title/tt1170358/

Re:I don't remember macs in the enterprise
Considering that Star Trek classic was filmed before Apple existed, it's not a far stretch to assume that one never appeared on the show. Moving forward one series, I draw your attention to: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0708798/
which is clearly analogous to World of Warcraft on a Macintosh. -
proof (with Gwyneth Paltrow)
There's a math nerd party in the movie (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000569/) where a rock band performs a song named i (the imaginary number).

Re:Etch it yourself
If you Googled that recipe in the US or the UK, I'd say you're now on a watch list. Hope you haven't had any recent contacts with any Muslim countries like say Uzbekistan and don't depend of security clearance for your job.

Hello spooks. Hope you enjoy the Panorama program!
I do like that Peter Clarke chap BTW. He reminds me of Geofrey Rush's character in Elizabeth. He's clearly a bastard but given appropriate discretionary powers he gets the job done. And there are distinct parallels between Muslim extremists now and Catholic extremists then I think. You chaps in Maryland are doing a sterling job. Watch Elizabeth if you get a chance, it's a very good movie. I like the idea of some Walsingham references at the NSA/SIS. Maybe you could name a meeting room after him or something :-)
And can you take the parent off the watchlist please, he just got trolled. -
Re:NASA in Association with Vivid Entertainment
Oh, that's already been done. Almost 10 years ago now:

For those of you too lazy to click on the link - its a porn film from a company called Private. Set during a space program, it was notable for the time for featuring a zero-G uh, "explosion" from one of the male characters. From memory, the production company booked the "vomit comet" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vomit_Comet the article I read about the subject described "...cast and crew scrambling out of the way of the gently floating blobs..." - A visual that has stuck with me (no pun intended) ever since I read it... -
2001? Superman III, more like...In case anyone doesn't get it, the above is a reference to the Stanley Kubric film 2001: A Space Odyssey If we're talking about self-healing computers, surely the one in Superman III is a better example. Anyone remember that?
It could heal itself and (most memorably) even turn one of the baddies into a robot to defend itself, but its graphics were on the level of an Atari 2600. :-/ -
Re:I agree
It is not made up! Just go see the movie Stupor Stroopers.

Re:Pinball is too expensive...
I think the reason Pinball is dying out is purely the cost of fixing them.
A mechanical game breaks all too often. Video games don't, and even damaged CDs are dealt with by downloading a cracked download. It's a shame -- hardly any pins anywhere any more.
Machine cost means only the richer types could afford _one_, or they were in a public place but set very difficult so the owner & renter could recoup their investments.
The Future Of Pinball just came out on DVD but I've yet to see it. Looking forward to it when I can. Pinball was the solitaire of physical sports. I miss it. -

Re:What's the draw?
Another vote for Espinazo del Diablo. Great picture.
His 'Opera Prima' was another horror movie called Cronos
Worth to watch. Ron Perlman is also in that one. I believe this is how their relationship started.
If they give Del Toro and Jackson some creative liberties, the Hobbit has some potential.
Cronos is written/directed by Del Toro and 'Instruments' (do not want to spoil) designed by Jose Fords. Both artist of Guadalajara, Mexico
-
Re:What's the draw?
Del Toro's best when he's most weird (have you ever seen Mimic?!?!?) and I have to agree...the hardcore LOTR fans are going to flip if even minimal artistic license is used, and Del Toro will be put into a box that he might not be able to fit. I really hope this works, and I'm looking forward to seeing it, but I'm also bracing myself for bad reviews regardless of how it really is.

Fear and Loathing in Hobbiton?
"As your lawyer, I advise you to smoke as much of that pipe-weed as you can"
What? Oh sorry, wrong Del Toro I guess... -
Re:What's the draw?
If I can go out on a limb here: I actually thought Pan's Labyrinth was mostly a very over-saturated (read: tarted up) retelling of Northfork. If you've seen that, Pan's Labyrinth is basically the same story. Except that it's full of eyecandy. There are points in Northfork that are stunning in their simple beauty, and it comes with a surprisingly sober Nick Nolte.
After that, Pan's Labyrinth seems kinda derivative.
This does not change my opinion on the awesomeness of Hellboy, though that's mostly because I'm a Ron Perlman fan, and Selma Blair is totally hot (no pun intended). -
Re:What's the draw?
I just looked up Gene Roddenberry (because I know he wrote Andromeda as well as Star Trek). Just look how many of his show/movie scripts are still being used even though he died in 1991.. crazy! http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0734472/
There is plenty of good literature that was written before last century y'know.. Ever heard of Charles Dickens? Shakespeare maybe? ;) Tolkien did do a lot for fantasy though. -
Re:There can be only one
What, you mean like The Lord Of The Rings?
-
Re:What's the draw?
If it's anything like Pan's Labyrinth, it'll be worth watching -- del Toro isn't bad.
Seconded... I can also recommend Espinazo del Diablo (the Devil's Backbone). Don't read about the plot beforehand, that will spoil too much. Just watch it. -
Re:There can be only oneThe Hobbit (1977). now i know you can take the parent as a troll post, or just someone who is ignorant of remakes, but as soon as i saw the cover of The 1977 the Hobbit I immediately realized that fat cutie looked like a young del Toro!

A link between the two, anyone? Or have I just drank too much coffee tonight? You be the judge.

Antitrust?
Am I the only one who thinks of the movie Antitrust when I hear this? I wonder if Microsoft bumped off a few OSS developers to get the code for Synap-- err... I mean... Live Mesh? And now that I think about it, is my wife really my wife or actually a Microsoft spy? Hmm....

Why Freeze A Living Thing?
When I was working at IMDb.com (the Internet Movie Database), I asked Col Needham (the founder and managing director) why they never released it as a book. His answer was that the database was constantly changing. With the lead time you had to give for the actual printing, by the time any book hit the shelves, it would be months out of date.
I think Wikipedia falls victim to the same problem. It might be a very good book and they might select the most stable entries, but like IMDb, Wikipedia is a living, breathing thing that grows and changes on a regular basis. In fact, that's part of its appeal. A book is basically just freezing a snapshot of selected articles in time, but how much does something where part of its value is in its dynamic nature lose from being frozen like that?

No, it's not. He can take that petition with 8 hundred thousand signatures with him to his next movie pitch, and say, "Do you really think no one cares about my movies?"
The only people who drop out of sight in the movie biz are the people that no-one cares about one way or the other. 20 years from now people will still be watching his movies for their awfullness, and famous talented actors will be doing the story of his life in movie form a la Ed Wood. -

RE: Ad hominem attacksOne good ad hominem attack deserves another, so here's yours: I really, REALLY wish you people would learn to use an apostrophe, damn it! And more importantly, when NOT to use one. All fine and good, I agree with that; maybe not with the level of vehemence you display, but I see your point. Semilierates wouldn't have a problem... WTF is a "Semilierate"? Sorry to piss on your picnic, but I absolutely hate it when Grammar Nazis can't spell. If you don't have the sense to use a spell checker, especially when griping about someone else's written language skills, you don't deserve to breathe the same air I do. To add insult to injury, you apparently don't know the proper usage of colons, semicolons, or quotes. To sum it up, don't bitch about someone else's language skills when your own are highly dubious. Oh, and "you people" sounds racist.
...some of us see images and smell smells as well as hearing sounds when we read... ...I have NO FUCKING CLUE... Obviously. Those of us who can read, have spent the past 20 years with our eyes glued to a screen, and understand texting/leetspeak, on the other hand, had no hallucination-induced reading comprehension issues (much less an apparent apoplectic fit) over a misplaced apostrophe. Minor annoyance, at worst. If you want a truly horrifying experience, try watching a teen chatting with other teens on myspaceIM. Only one word in ten is recognizable as American English, spelling and capitalization are apparently random, punctuation is occasional (at best)... Unfortunately, this is the new generation of Americans, and these are the people who will be running for office in ten years or so (and if you thought Dubya was bad)... Idiocracy is not a joke, it's a preview.
Call it sub-literate, call it semi-literate, call it the dumbing-down of our youth, call it whatever you would like. It's a trend that is only increasing as the technology curve grows. With this in mind, remember that William Shakespeare couldn't spell his own name, and Albert Einstein flunked out of school.
Either keep up, or get out of the way. -
Re:Tired: InfomercialsWired: Commertainment! Dramercials, sitcommercials, game shows. (It'd be hard to do law and/or police shows around a product line (other than OCP). But a branded medical show could be done if The Colbert Report's "Cheating Death with Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, DFA" segments are anything to judge by.)
TV series centered around a product line aren't new. They've marketed them to children for years (Transformers, GI Joe, My Little Pony, really anything that had a line of tie-in toys). And what else is The Price is Right than a game show about products? (Wheel of Fortune used to be that way too, where each round was followed by shopping for products, "and the rest on a gift certificate.") -
