Re:What's so bad about Uwe Boll?
Hey, now! Mortal Kombat was actually fun if you didn't stare at it too hard, Resident Evil was tolerable for at least one viewing, and Street Fighter was... well, Street Fighter had MST3K comedy value. (Oh my God! They killed Raul Julia! You bastards!)
Having deliberately not watched a Boll movie from start to finish due to an utter lack of appeal for what I saw, I can't say for sure that they don't have any redeeming qualities, but they certainly seem at least one notch lower on the bad movie hierarchy than that.
I mean, sure, Paul Anderson has turned out some utter shite -- AvP comes to mind as one of his shiniest polished turds -- but he's never sunk to the Highlander-level depths of "Oh my God, now I have to invent a time machine just to retroactively kill myself and thereby never see this movie", or even to Vercingétorix levels of "Please remind me again why we're watching this".

Re:That 3-D aftertaste...
I don't think to myself, "you know, this movie is good, but it would be GREAT IN COLOR!" I thought Robin Hood was great, but that's because it had a great, compelling story.
Color is just sugar coating. It's in the same league as sound. Maybe it can show you something you've never seen before, but it doesn't really expand the story.
Fixed that for you.

I hate it when life imitates art like this. This sounds eerily like the Robin William film "The Final Cut"

I'm still waiting for the ability to don a "squid" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114558/

sorry guys, my HTML suxorz like a mad cow and I can't recall how to make the "squid" a hyperlink -
Already done in a way...
Wasn't there a lame movie about this starring Robin Williams... oh yea it was called The Final Cut

Re:I hate 3D glasses.
That would be their 2009 Christmas musical, The Princess and the Frog, set in New Orleans. It's hand-drawn.
(I believe their direct-to-video films are hand-drawn too, possibly).
I like Studio Ghibli's mix of hand-drawn and 3D. I believe Ponyo on a Cliff is going to be done in watercolor (or at least a style resembling watercolor). -
Been there, done that
When will we see 3D porn in theaters?
Hot Skin (3D porn movie from late 1970s) occasionally makes it out to "art house" theaters. I got to see it just a few months ago, as part of Pornotopia at the Guild Cinema. It's every bit as cheezy as you'd hope, and I think it'd be a lot less entertaining outside of a crowded theater. If it comes to your town, be there. -
Bouncy bouncy!
I've seen the original "Up!". The idea of a Pixar remake fills me with both anticipation and dread.

If Pixar are tackling Up, but I guess they're a bit more avant-garde than I thought.
I kind of hope they don't use the original cast. -

Apparently you haven't seen "House of the Dead", then. Trailer here (flash).I apologize, after watching that I promise to never throw around the word "horrible" again so lightly!
I intended to say that Bad Taste was so bad it was good, that clip was so bad i no longer wish to watch movies

Re:This is great but...When I had to take it sex-ed, there weren't any labs! I'm guessing budget cuts
I would have loved a lab in that class. I'm sure I would have understood things so much better had there been a class like the one in Weird Science: Party High [IMDB.com]. Unfortently it isn't mentioned in there, but Lisa added a class about Sex Ed., where the final was to have sex with your lab partner, but only if you understood the entire biology involed with sex. -

good german movie?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0349047/
could habe been a new spaceballs
but the fun is to a good part in the language and differend dialects (like the bavarian speaking crew and the east-german speaking Jens Maul) so a (good) dub would have been necessary
subtitles wouldnt do it -
Re:What's so bad about Uwe Boll?
Well, take a look at the current ratings of his films at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0093051/
House of the Dead: User Rating: 2.0/10 Bottom 100: #35
Alone in the Dark: 2.2/10 Bottom 100: #64
BloodRayne: 2.6/10
Seed: 1.9/10 Bottom 100: #30
BloodRayne 2.6/10
BloodRayne II 2.3/10 Bottom 100: #76
Of course, statistics is one thing, but you can't truly appreciate how painfully bad they are until you actually watch one. Alone in the dark did it for me. Even now, three years later, I still get angry just thinking about how he violated one of my cherished childhood gaming memories. -
My own Uwe Boll story
I saw the world-premiere screening of "House of the Dead" here in San Francisco. It was before the movie even had a national distribution deal.
Of course, at that time nobody knew how bad Uwe's movies could be, because this was his first major feature. But we figured, "Hell ... it's a zombie movie based on a videogame. How good could it be?" So we bought a pint of Jim Beam before the flick to sneak into the theater.
On the way in ... uh-oh. There's a guy at the entryway to the theater, and he's frisking everybody in line. People are being asked to open their bags and the whole bit.
We don't have much choice at this point, so my friend dutifully submits to the pat down and: "What's THIS? What's in your back pocket??!" He: "Uh..." and he sheepishly removes the bottle from his pocket and shows it to the guy. The man inspects it and says, in a funny accent, "Ah, BOOZE! Booze iss fine, ve chust want no cameras." And with that, we were in.
It wasn't until the Q&A session after the screening that we realized that the man who patted us down was Uwe Boll.
So for that alone, I say I WILL NOT sign this petition. (But, having seen "Alone in the Dark," I can tell you there's precious few other reasons not to.)
That, and his film adaptation of "Postal" is supposed to be so bizarre, creatively deranged and twisted that it's a genuine gem. -
Re:What's so bad about Uwe Boll?
They could get 10 million signatures, and Boll could say "Screw you guys, I'm going to make MORE bad movies!" and I'm not going to be up in arms about it, even though I did sign the petition, because I think it's funny.
It's actually worse than that; Boll comes out ahead no matter what happens:
- Most likely outcome: petition picks up a few thousand signatures and then fizzles out. Boll can now point to it as evidence that the "geek backlash" against his work is overblown.
- Less likely alternate outcome: petition picks up a million+ signatures. Boll can now point to it as proof that he is "edgy" and "controversial", which is useful since his latest project appears to be an attempt to offend as many people as humanly possible. "The movie that a million people tried to keep you from seeing" makes a great pitch line to entertainment "reporters".
The only way it could possibly be any more useful for Boll is if he himself set up the petition and is using it to gather the email addresses of people who hate him. Working email addresses fetch a pretty penny on the spam market, so it becomes like printing free money.

Re:What's so bad about Uwe Boll?
Well kinda, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0173840/ was my favorite movie of 2001, it got horrible reviews, people said it was trash, it did so bad at the box office that every other final fantasy movie has been the 'straight to dvd' variety...
But IT GOT ME A REAL DATE! With a pretty girl, no less!!!! she was probably only an 8 on a scale of 10, but I'm only a 7.5 according to hot or not... plus I'm overweight (but for guys that doesn't matter as much)
the movie could have been bad enough to make my eyes bleed and it would have been my favorite movie.
all my other movie dates, were with long time internet friends when i drove to Texas.
they don't compare to actually succeeding on asking a girl out on a date. -
Re:What's so bad about Uwe Boll?Uwe Boll only shot 3 to 5 takes of every scene in the movie. He thought that the biggest strength in comedy is the emotion behind the acting, which cannot be kept when trying the scenes too often. That little snippet may remind you of Ed Wood Or Steven Spielberg. He did all the dialogue scenes for the original Jurassic Park in 3 takes or less. He also brought the movie in ahead of schedule. Not saying Boll is as good as Spielberg, just saying that's a poor metric for comparison.

Re:just let him be
What was the last German movie to gain any kind of international attention? Run Lola Run?
How about these for example:
- Good Bye Lenin! (2003) - nominated for Golden Globe (ok, perhaps that doesn't amount to much, but it's a nice movie)
- Der Untergang (2004) - oscar nomination for "best foreign language film of the year" (where "foreign" means "not english")
- Das Leben der Anderen (2006) - won the oscar for "best foreign language film", as well as many other awards in several international film festivals (Great Britain and Canada among those)
That's quite a few movies since Lola rennt (1998). Looks like there are quite a few German directors who are actually doing better after all... those movies are all very much worthwhile watching, by the way (though quite disturbing).
P.S. I'm not German so I'm bound to have missed several more good movies. -

Re:A Challenge
Doom wasn't directed by Uwe Boll. It's not nearly as bad as any Uwe Boll movie (not that that makes it any good).
-
Re:Signed, signed, SIGNED!
Indeed. And think about those of us who love groaners, and can't think of a better way to spend an evening than watching a horrible B movie. Uwe Boll is the Ed Woods of the aughties, and deserves praise. Where do I sign up to make him continue making movies?
And who knows -- he might one day come up with a real masterpiece too. Remember that Peter Jackson got his fame from "Bad Taste".
Regards,

Re:What's so bad about Uwe Boll?-He lured critcs out to a charity fight [wired.com] and then beat the snot out of them, sending one to the hospital It's a bit worse than that, from the trivia page of Postal, he had also planned on capitalizing off of that by using it as footage in the movie: In June of 2006, Uwe Boll publicly announced a challenge to his numerous critics to "put up or shut up." Based on certain criteria, Boll will select five of his harshest critics to fight in a series of multi-round boxing matches to be held in Vancouver, British Columbia that will be broadcast over the Internet. He planned to use footage from these fights in this movie, but it was soon discovered that they don't fit into the plot of the movie, so the idea was dropped. Itâ(TM)s claimed that they might be part of the DVD when itâ(TM)s released. Is it a "charity" fight when you are planning on making money off of it?
Also as further proof, I offer up another bit of trivia from Postal: Uwe Boll only shot 3 to 5 takes of every scene in the movie. He thought that the biggest strength in comedy is the emotion behind the acting, which cannot be kept when trying the scenes too often. That little snippet may remind you of Ed Wood.
I assure you, I watch a lot of movies. He is up there in the worst director/writer category. Thank god Germany got its laws straightened out! -

Re:What's so bad about Uwe Boll?
BloodRayne was probably the crowning achievement of his career. Then he followed it up with BloodRayne 2 and Postal...
Seriously, this guy has made his name by taking decent games and making completely shit movies out of them. I'm saddened to learn he's been working on an adaptation of Far Cry.

Re:just let him beI don't go. But I'd rather he stopped shoveling filth onto the screen and perverting the video game industry. He already has 3 new movies in production, and 3 in post-production according to imdb. His newest:
"Zombie Massacre", based on a Wii-Action Shooter, revolves around three punk rockers and a police officer. They have to fight their way to a city - filled with zombies - with their old-timer, on which they transport a nuclear bomb, which should detonate in the city, to destroy the zombies.
-
Re:Regardless of the petitionHow come the studios don't stop him from making movies? It's not like they're drowning in the money he's raking in with Bloodrayne. I have asked that question of people in the know some time ago, and as I recall it had something to do with German tax loopholes. This meant that the movie could turn a profit (for the right people, presumably it was a huge loss in many books) no matter how badly it did. Have a look at Boll's IMDb entry and note how many films he has in production or post-production right now. He's not slowing down, he's speeding up.

Re:Smart Move?
Am I wrong?
Sadly, you are wrong. Though probably not how you meant.
Watch The Corporation . Corporations are legally required to act solely to increase their shareholders' value. You can act morally, but such action must always be overridden by the shareholders' purely monetary interests, in the case of a conflict. This is, of course, technically, almost always the case.
So, why are you wrong? Because it's not true that morals and ethics usually don't factor in -- they almost never can factor in.
Whatever morals and ethics Google has managed to slip in post-IPO have been allowed because their stock keeps rising and no one complains. Let the situation turn sour, though, and I guarantee you'll see the subset of their shareholders who are asshats suing for the company to pursue immoral/unethical courses of action to increase profit/stock value. -

Let's not. And again, not.
A long time ago, I had the misfortune of watching this late 1980's travesty, done in a late 1970's Playboy Channel style, with the corresponding production values to boot, and some sort of sensuality cult where women dance naked to bland instrumental synth music, lost to the outside world in their "groovy" trip.
Having read both Asimov's original novella and the Asimov-Silverberg full novel, I thought "I've never heard of the movie, so it sank like a stone when it was released, but it's a great story, surely it can't be that bad, can it?" To my complete astonishment, it was that bad, and then some. -
