Re:A Cube, a Gitmo supporter's dream.
A Cube, includes all devices to torture anyone who objects to the Occupation without needing large amounts of staff, also cleans up pesky evidence before declassification. Also can be used to program difficult people with desired mindset, with penalties of burning death, or various other implementable traps. Cost: $30bn + imprisonment of any dissenters, employment of a staff of 5(2 low level + 2 high level operators, + overseer).
However, in reality, we have Gitmo coming in a close second due to lack of ability to obtain private interviews (for all we know, the conditions are probably the same as the Cube with the lack of evidence. That is, the kind not from Occupation sources.). Abu Ghraib and its disillusioned people due to conditions going from evil, to a hair less than evil (same tainted sources!). -

Re:Name that classic SF story
Wow, people have no recollection of old classic SF movies at all. The original cinematic occurence of the material known as "flubber" was in The Absent-Minded Professor, back in 1961. I think it was an old model T that they put the flubber in (among other things). Then again, it's one of those movies that just begs for MST3K...

Why neocons exist
You see, just as you often see posts out here on slashdot, kuro5hin or other internet message boards by western internet users showing their rage and frustration with Islam.
You think *Slashdot* and *Kuro5hin* has rage and frusteration with Islam? These are fairly socially liberal forums compared to most of the US.
If you want to understand the neocon mindset (I read rightnation.us for a while, which had many people advocating the nuclear destruction of Mecca to "teach those Muslims a lesson"), you have to watch something like the Dirty Harry series. Dirty Harry pretty much *exactly* epitomizes the thought process I've seen from neocon postings (even to the extent of having the potentially gay peace-symbol wearing guy be the villan). The thought process goes something like this: Politicians are corrupt and they and judges and other high-ranking authority are crippled by "civil rights" and their lack of manliness. As a result, they won't do anything. The whole problem could be solved with our powerful military hardware -- after all, look how powerful it is -- if only someone would have the balls to apply it without being held back by stupid things like civil rights. What is necessary is for people with lousy jobs who don't have much influence to just stand up and show that they have a pair of balls and are willing to extreme force, and they'll protect their women and children. Then they'll be heroes, and the authorities that refuse to do anything will be demonstrated to be clearly wrong. Oh, and it won't matter that they're xenophobic.
Do not think that this is not an influential mindset. It ties very well into machisimo, dislike of the system, and lack of understanding of civil rights. For uneducated males, this is a significant driving force. "Respecting weaker cultures/countries" is seen as weak, womanish, and so forth.
If you go somewhere like West Virginia, you'll find that there are very few minorities present in the state. Very few people have experience with non-whites, there is *still* a social barrier to hiring blacks, and the Christian churches (mostly very conservative Baptist) have far more impact than the occasional news story about the plight of some half-imaginary Arabs -- besides, Fox News is the primary source of news. The main impact of minorities has been immigrants that take low-paying jobs that the local inhabitants could otherwise have. That results in a lot of hard feelings towards Mexicans, blacks, and so forth. Slashdot's irritation over Indian competition for jobs is very, very mild compared to what you'll see in a place like this.
If you want a somewhat less applicable example of a movie with this mindset (really more oriented towards people that are a result of growing up bombarded with anticommunist propaganda), I'd suggest watching Red Dawn. -

GNAA Announces Full Cybermilitary Support of the German Government
Mikhail Borovsky (GNAP) - Moscow, Russia - GNAA President timecop and Vice-President jesuitx held a press conference live via satellite from GNAA US HQ in Tarzana, CA where they announced full cybermilitary support of the German government following the German injunction against Wikipedia.
This roughly translates as, "Dear friends and comrades, Wikipedia has been shut down as of January 17th, 2006 due to a court injunction by the government of Germany, due to extensive support by Wikipedia for the Jews and the state of Israel".
This type of support was made illegal in Germany in 1939 by the Berlin Pact, signed by Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin. Angela Merkel, chancellor of Germany has announced that this injunction will not be lifted until Wikipedia stops supporting "Die Juden".
"We also feel this injunction came in due time, as Wikipedia is being overrun by articles pertaining to non-notable blogs with completely useless information (or "blogs"), which are also illegal in the Great Republic of Germany. We are pleased to receive the support of the Gay Niggers, as they have already declared war on the blogs, and know how to defeat this communist ideal before it can become a threat to freedom," said Mrs. Merkel.

I still don't get it.
Why is Google the bad guy again? As I understand it:
1) Google's results are being censored by the government, typically by simply not allowing their traffic through, making it appear to be a technical malfunction.
2) There's no way for Google to avoid the censorship.
3) Google comes up with a way to disclose the censorship.
4) Alternatively, Google could walk, leaving Chinese search engines to filter results without any disclosure.
So if Google made the wrong decision, which one was better? Walking and leaving the Chinese with no awareness of the situation? Ignoring the situation and sticking with the status quo? Filtering results without disclosure? How would these steps help Tibet?
This is like boycotting Zhang Yimou's films because they attack the Chinese government through metaphor, rather than railing against it overtly and getting him imprisoned or killed.
The Chinese government is the problem, attacking Google is a huge waste of resources; how about a letter writing campaign to Beijing? -
Are You Kissing Hollywood's Ass?A couple of days ago someone posted about having seen the new Harrison Ford movie FireWall. The poster noted Ford supposedly downloads thousands of accounts into an iPod. It looks like this story is a teaser for the movie.
"Abe Usher has created an application that allows an iPod to scan corporate networks for files likely to contain sensitive business data and download them,"
I couldn't be bother to see such a movie. Harrison Ford playing the righteous man who just isn't going to take anymore and singlehandedly wipes out untold numbers of bad guys is too old in and of itself, but to have Hollywood throw out a buzz word like 'firewall' and use it as a lame premise for a lame movie it way too much. Re:Three words:
When the movie Dogma came out, Christian fundamentalists rallied to protest it. The campaign involved hate-mail and picket-lines. Where there was not sufficient local support, they bussed in people. Oddly enough, out of curiosity, Smith himself showed up and became a part of the protest at his local theatre.
Sure - there are just as many issues with Christians. But you don't see an international campaign of violent protest from them.
Of course, it's not that Christians won't get violent. The abortion issue has shown that... in spades. But as deplorable as bombings and murders are... they're not quite the same league. -
Documentary movie about Al Jazeera
Just to add to the topic, there's quite a fascinating documentary about Al Jazeera, which followed the journalists and news staff around during the American invasion, asks them about what they do, how and why they do it, and so on. It's called Control Room, and if you have any interest in this sort of thing, I think it's a must-see film whether you agree with the conclusions or not.

Eventually, you will be exposed to real criminals, in the workplace, at home, driving on the roads.
We hire police to protect us from criminals. Without that, you yourself will have to carry a weapon, and defend yourself.
Even with police on duty, you will most likely have to defend yourself anyway, as they rarely show up until after the crime is committed. I know from personal experience. 911 is a sham.
When you are attacked, don't let them come around behind you. Protect your flanks, and your rear. Stay hidden. What they cannot see, they cannot attack. Shoot first, lay down a pattern of fire. Stock up plenty of ammo.

Mod Parent Insightful/Interesting, not Funny
The library is EXACTLY the place. There are many reasons for looking at "porn" besides getting off. If it was being done in a library, from a book specifically bought in for its value, then the chances are that this "porn" was actually quite historically, culturally or socially important, and that a lot was being learned from it. I for one am very thankful that the library prevailed in this instance.
Who the Hell is modding this funny? The guy has a perfectly good point. For example, how often do we hear the argument that porn is a driving force behind adoption of new technology? The significance of porn in our society is a legitimate area of interest, as works such as Pornography: A Secret History of Civilisation have explored.
I haven't read TFA (do people still do that?) and for all I know this story is about some sleaze jacking off in a library, but the parent post makes an excellent point regardless. -

Ignoring the obvious
That article reads like fodder for conspiracy theorists. It presents four pieces of circumstantial evidence and concludes that based on those, Apple must be planning to switch to Windows. I suppose that could be a plausible scenario in a galaxy far, far away, but in modern, commodity driven computer industry here on Earth, I believe the explanation is far simpler.
Could it be that Apple management is simply being pragmatic, and accepting the fact x86 hardware is cheaper and advancing at faster rate, and that USB 2.0 simply removed any competetive advantage that Firewire might have had in the past, and is present on far more hardware than 1394 is? Naw, it can't be that... it must be that they're planning to dump their most cherished asset, one that sets them apart from the rest of the computer manufacturers, defines the core of Apple's product line, and keeps their customers in fold with nearly religious fervor. Yeah, that must be it!

Re:the amazing thing
I don't even think it's his directing abilities that actually executes the coup-de-grace, it's his complete failure to grasp that filmmaking should be an art, not an exercise in fucking economics.
From TFA:
Boll says the point is that his movies get better as his career progresses - Dungeon Siege is "ten times better" than BloodRayne, which is ten times better than House of the Dead, and so on.
So fucking what? Since when, outside of primary school, did grown-up adults get "points for trying"?
Grow up and stop whining. If you're producing art and it's shit, you're a shit artist, end of story. As a paying punter I don't give a fuck if your latest film is only one tenth as crap as the one before it - it's still crap, and I'm out of pocket because of it. Add to that the fact that you've also effectively just destroyed the chance of anyone ever using $MY_FAVOURITE_FRANCHISE again, to make a good film that I'd actually like to see, and you've actually managed made a negative artistic contribution to the world, you tool.
"People say BloodRayne has a very bad IMDB rating - yes, but how many votes of zero points were made before the movie was out, by people who hate me but haven't even seen the movie?
Well, let's see, shall we? Hmmm, picking Halo, somebody else's currently-in-production film mentioned later in the article...
Ah yes, as I suspected, I can't even find a way to rate it because it's not released yet and it would be fucking retarded if IMDB let you rate unreleased films.
More baseless "poor little me" whining. Moving on...
And besides, says Boll, what exactly is it that we are expecting from him? After all, he is using videogames as his source material, and they're hardly reknowned for their complex characterisations and sophisticated narratives.
Yes, but that's why successful adaptations take the source material and weave a story into it. Games are not big on story, but movies are. Here's a hint: do you distribute the movie with a keyboard so the audience can click menu-options to advance dialogue? To you make movies which have multiple, branching storylines? How about movies where you can download free content from the producer after you buy it, and get extra goodies to extend the life of the film?
No, because movies and games are different media. What works for one doesn't work for another, and as the adapter it's up to you as director or screenwriter to make that adaptation. Nobody makes TV adverts showing a 30-second clip of a really good magazine advert, so why the fuck do you think it's appropriate to claim the same is justified for games?
Us games journalists, Boll argues, should be pleased that videogame-based movies are getting made at all. "It's tough to convince someone from the studio system to believe in a videogame-based movie.
Yes, because of fucking tools like you who ensure that every one that manages to get crapped out by a studio is shallow, mindless shite. They look at game adaptations in the past, see they're ill-received shit and run scared. And you're seeking to address this by squatting out movies you've as good as admitted are crap?
"And all my movies, no matter what reviewers are saying, are getting sold."
"Apparently Boll is "number one in the market" as far as paying investors back goes, and that's "Not because I make the best movies on earth, but I make movies for a minimal amount of budget compared to what major companies are spending,"
"This is the main point - if the movie is really, really bad, why are a hundred territories buying it?"
"So if people are writing on the Internet about how my movies were big failures, it's because these people are amateurs and they have no idea of the reality of film-making and film selling.
"I personally think that with the budget they've planned, Halo will be a failure -
Re:But, Doom actually TRIED...You are right about the Doom movie being far above and beyond Uwe Boll's regular crap...

The Myth of Peak Oil...
Despite all this noise about peak oil, oil futures remain reasonable, and oil prices are coming down in light of new supplies, suggesting that our access to oil isn't nearly as stripped as doomsayers want us to believe.
China and America have already begun investing in alternative sources of energy, all while new refineries are being built to increase supply. The futures market sees this as evidence that oil is heading for oversupply, just like it did in the mid to late 1990s.
If you're convinced that the market is mistaken, well, maybe you're right. But rather than argue with me, I have some simple advice for you: buy. Prove how convinced you are by putting your money where your mouth is, and if you're right, you'll amass a fortune. You can buy us all copies of Mad Max with the words "I told you so" painted on the front in sweet rare crude. Thales will tell you, there's nothing that says "I'm smarter than you" like money.
But if anyone was confident enough in their predictions of peak oil to bank on it, the futures market would adjust to reflect it. Why hasn't that happened?
It hasn't happened because this apocalyptic pessimism is shortsighted.
I'm sympathetic, it's easy to get worried when you're told something is finite, though its consumption is increasing. But in a market, if consumption is increasing, that's a good sign nothing's wrong. Consumption will increase only so long as it's unproblematic, then it will slow, a market is a proportional negative feedback system.
To further allay any fears, keep in mind the imminent end of oil has been predicted routinely for the last 125 years.
Before that, the exhaustion of coal was the fun thing to predict. While we're less reliant on coal these days, we still have mountains of it to mine. Cheap oil, not depletion, brought about the end of the coal era. And likewise, cheap x, not depletion, will bring the end of the oil era.
Even if all this analysis is wasted breath, if peak oil has certainly and suddenly hit and we're all staring at a future of expensive oil, even then, I'm still not worried. [R]ising oil prices are... an invitation to corn and coal and hydrogen. For anyone with a fresh idea, expensive oil is as good as a subsidy. Expensive oil only means we shift to something else, probably something cleaner, and I'm fine with that too. -
