You forgot one thing the Greeks invented
The Greeks also invented the kimono. Kimono is come from the Greek word himona, is mean winter. So, what do you wear in the wintertime to stay warm? A robe. You see: robe, kimono.

Re:Poetic Justice
unadulterated british sitcoms are nicely popular on american tv, eg PBS. they don't get run on the commercial networks but there are still plenty of fans who watch it in its untouched original format (excluding the PAL->NTSC conversion of course
:) doctor who while not being a sitcom, has a decent enough audience in the US. there are many unadulterated british programs which run just fine on american tv.
there are exceptions of course, all in the family was a remake of the british series "Till Death Do Us Part". the american series sanford and son was a remake of the british "steptoe and son". these remakes were worse than the british originals? other than "its not british so it sucks", what objective reasoning can you provide?
japanese anime also seems to do just fine in the US, fans seem to prefer the original japanese dialogue with subtitles. this seems to somewhat counter your assertion that all americans want is americanized remakes. -

Re:Some shows/films don't stand i18n
I believe that film was Just Visiting (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0189192/). It naturally starred Jean Reno, since he's apparently the only Frenchman Americans can stand to watch onscreen. Actually, it looks like Jean Reno and some other cast members were even in the original French version in the same roles, and it was written and directed by the same guy.
Yes, I've seen both, and let me make a few comments.
First, both the original and the American remake were released in the US. I'm not sure if the original was in theaters, but it was available on DVD. Neither did particularly well I don't think, but then dubbed foreign films are not usually a big commercial success. Neither are English-language films starring Christina Applegate, regardless of whether they are remakes of foreign films or not.
Second, the two movies are so radically different that they almost don't even resemble each other. Not only are a few actors changed, but the entire theme of the movie is completely reworked. It's been a while since I've seen either, but as I recall in the original French version, the main character realizes she has a connection to royalty and becomes a more noble (so to speak) person because of it. In the American version, the plot is similar to the other version, but the movie is really all about Christina Applegate's character developing more girl power and I think realizing she get along just fine without her jerk boyfriend.
The sad thing is, I think they ditched the whole royalty angle because they thought people who live in a country that has never had a king (or at least not its own king) wouldn't be able to relate. But I think that was a mistake. Surely anybody can relate to the idea of having something in your identity worth living up to, whether or not that something comes from royalty.
I'm not sure if I have a point. If I do, it's probably that the movie didn't do poorly because it was an adaptation for the US market. It did poorly because it just wasn't as good a movie as the original, even though it could've been. Also, my other point is that it's kinda fun to watch the original and the watch the remake.

Re:Remit
On the other hand, those of us paying attention in history have learned that governments will pass a law, claiming one reason, then actually mis-use it for other reasons.
This may be seen most recently with the passage of various anti-terrorist laws (with the verbal promise to only use them to root out terrorism) that were immediately put to work in the "war on drugs" via the euphamism that selling drugs was akin to terrorism.
So, puh-leeze, do not be "Shocked, shocked!" to see government mis-using laws. -

The Red Queen: Well, you're going to look like an even bigger idiot if you don't get in there and do exactly what you're told...Who are they writing about all over this country and what are they saying? Are they saying: 'Are there any Communists in the Defense Department?' No, of course not, they're saying: 'How many Communists are there in the Defense Department?' So just stop talking like an expert all of a sudden and get out there and say what you're supposed to say.

GNAA Announces Corporate DownsizingGNAA Announces Corporate Downsizing and Administrative Reformation
Misha Borovsky (GNAP) - Hollywood - GNAA President timecop announced at a press conference this morning that the Gay Nigger Association of America is in the midst of a large effort to reduce operating costs and streamline business processes. "Layoffs of approximately fifty percent of the gay workforce are to be expected, as well as a shifting in administrative functions," timecop was quoted as saying. Analysts predict this corporate downsizing was made necessary due to over-investment into the New Orleans area, when it was announced last year that the GNAA would be opening a state-of-the-art branch office on the coast. The building was nearing completion and just opening for business when it was destroyed by hurricane Katrina, which has been recently found to be the responsibility of Jews. As George W. Bush is noted for not caring about black people, FEMA has refused to pay for the repairs, and the project was scrapped.
"We are also making internal changes to the corporate information technology intranet," said supers, CTO for GNAA Worldwide Operations. "Many of our information moving processes were running on the Lunix platform, and this was generating large costs due to system slowness and instability. After a careful usability study, we have found that we will be saving millions of dollars [USD] per year by switching to the Microsoft Windows 2003 Server System".
timecop ended the conference by announcing, "We'll always be there for the gay niggers of the world. With this restructuring of the organization, we are enabled to offer twice the service for a fraction of the cost. It's a new gay universe ahead."

Re:Is it noon?
Also, Hitler ordered Paris to be destroyed and many explosives were placed but never detonated because Dietrich von Choltitz did not follow the orders from Hitler, risking reprisals against his family back in Germany. Paris was saved. There is a gripping book "Is Paris Burning?", as well as a movie by the same name that I haven't seen. The architects in the middle ages trusted their offspring to finish and maintain the cathedrals that the architects laid the foundations for. Seems that turned out ok - most of the cathedrals are still here and don't show signs of being stolen or vandalized. Even the Germans had the good sense to leave Paris alone during both wars and they're the original Vandals.
...You are also wrong about the Germans. A number of old inner cities and over 200 medieval castles in my country (the Netherlands) were destroyed beyond repair by the Germans in the 4 days we fought them. Paris was saved because it wasn't fought over. Still the Germans are not more destructive than our other neighbours. Overall they are our most peaceful neighbours.

Re:They already did this once before
Nope; apparently a company called "BBV" was involved in some of the productions. Perhaps that's where the confusion came from?
If it had aired on the BBC in Britain, I'm confident it would have attracted mainstream attention. It didn't, I've never heard of this, nor seen it, and I'm pretty sure that was *never* the case.
If you can provide a link to details of *any* alleged transmission dates (including the name of the station they aired on), I'll be prepared to consider that I was wrong (^_^)
Info:- here and here... -
"The Ocho"
In case anyone was wondering where they got the name "The Ocho" for the name of FireFox 2.0, I believe it was from the movie, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, where the station that was covering the dodgeball tournament was "ESPN 8" aka "the ocho".

Re:Do me a favor...
I unfortunately never got to play the game. I admit to having bad information there.
The movie, however, I know first-hand about. There was a movie released by the BBC in 1981. I don't believe it was ever made available in the US. My Dad had a copy of it that he special ordered, he's the one who got me into the guide in the first place, go figure. It follows the storyline of the book series far more closely than the 2005 movie.

Human drug factories
One in particular had aliens coming to Earth and transforming human bodies into narcotics factories (and doing the person in, in the process).
That sounds somewhat like "I Come In Peace", starring Dolph Lundgren. It deals with an alien that sucks the endorphins out of heroin addicts' brains to produce an addictive "space drug". A silly movie, but worth a look if you have a couple of hours to waste. :-) -
contributors' copyright?
The Copyright and Conditions of Use page on the IMDb website states that:
All content included on this site, such as text, graphics, logos, button icons, images, audio clips, video clips, digital downloads, data compilations, and software, is the property of IMDb or its content suppliers and protected by United States and international copyright laws.
The website also says that the IMDb retain copyrights of the database as a whole, and reserve the right to license it. How can the IMDb keep the copyright of the whole database when individual contributors keep the copyright of their own contributions? Do they require that contributors waive their copyright to the IDMb? In any case, it seems abusive to me that the IMDb retain copyright of the database when most of their content is user-contributed. Of course they don't want to open the door to competitors, but still, it's kind of ungrateful, no? -
Re:Ongoing IMDB Challenge
Is there a way to search IMDB for these statistics (of course, that would be cheating)?
Download the plain text data files from http://www.imdb.com/interfaces. -
Re:UghFrom his website - http://www.stopkill.com/
Jesus said, "If any of you should cause one of these little ones to stumble, it would be better for you if a millstone were tied around your neck and that you be cast into the uttermost depths of the sea."
And...
Jack Thompson doesn't want your money. He isn't asking you to be a client. What he wants is for you to get up out of your chair because you're as mad as Hell about the video game industry's assault on our children and you're not going to take it anymore!
Interestingly, Network, the movie alluded to in the quote above, is rated "R."
So...Jesus hates "M" rated video games but is cool with "R" rated movies.
If that ain't comedy, I don't know what is.

See all the nicely laid out information, showing the details about availability, the subtitles, aspect ratio, audio, and languages?
Neither do I. -
Re:Ongoing IMDB Challenge
IMDb has a page for this
Unfortunately, it appears to be censored. -
Re:Alternate Interfaces
The interfaces link above has a place for you to download text file exports of most of the actual movie data (attrociously normalized). I have occassionally wanted to use this data on my own site for various purposes, but there are all kinds of nasty warnings about copyright and how all one's base belongs to them. It had been my understanding that one could not copyright a collection of facts, though one could copyright a collection of facts organized and presented in a particular manner. Legally, is there any reason a person couldn't just take their data, import it into a format of their own design, and then do whatever they wanted with it?
In other words, do IMDB's though-shalt-not-use-our-data-without-licensing claims hold water? Do their legal threats only apply to imdb specific content like user comments or reviews (which I don't think are in the text dumps anyway) or do they also apply to things like public domain information about a movie?
I understand that IMDB does allow some use of the data, otherwise they wouldn't provide the dumps, but the question is, how can they restrict the use as much as they claim to? -
Re:15 Reasons to boycott IMDb

Yeah, and you get to read comments from complete nutters who apparently do nothing all day, every day... except comment on a film they don't even like. Scary stuff :-).
