Indeed, we all keep him in our hearts.

My kids, who just turned 8, are unlikely to even learn how to drive. They'll live in a world where all cars are self-driving, and which report all location data to the security services for National Security. We'll be sold on the convenience of self-driving cars, in return for the manufacturers knowing where every car is at every moment. Since self-driving cars will be leased, and not sold (even if they were sold, vehicle registration takes care of the identification), they'll know, more or less, who is driving where and when. Those who drive themselves will be viewed with suspicion, and likely treated as subversive actors. Only a criminal would care if there's a record of their every move. Aside from the obligatory re-read of the short-story A Nice Morning Drive accompanied by Red Barchetta, I will also recommend The Last Chase. (The MST3K version is better than the origial!) The funniest thing about the movie is that after the fuel crisis of the late 70s and the dour pronouncements coming out of Washington DC during the Carter era, by the time the movie got made in 1981, California was seen as the last bastion of freedom / car culture. And that ladies and germs, is what a real paradigm shift looks like.

I've seen an example that works: The Danish film and video game rating system.

It differs from e.g. the US system in a number of ways:

* It's run by an independent government-sponsored organization, not the industry.
* For children not accompanied by an adult, the highest rating is "15 and older".
* Children ages 7 and up can see any movie if accompanied by an adult, no matter the rating.
* The board is charged only with determining if a film could be psychologically damaging to a typical child. They do not judge the "morals" and message of the film.
* The board features actual child development experts. As such, they know that cursing and nudity is not harmful to children, and if that's all the film contains, it will be rated "All audiences".

Example: "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle".

USA (MPAA): 17+ (unless accompanied by an adult) due to "strong language, sexual content, drug use and some crude humor".

Denmark: 7+ recommended (but all ages admitted) due "strange and threatening persons, assaults, fights and accidents [...] all in a comedic context" (a context which could be lost on very young children).

It's sad that in this era when we need it most, the movie "PCU" isn't available for streaming. It should be projected into every dorm room.

The movie, In Time, touches on the subject of a timeline for a person. As Wikipedia relates, Harlan Ellison had already written a similar story as well as a few others.

Despite this, I can see people not appreciating or caring about a timeline. I know it's hard to believe but there are millions (billions?) of people who use the Net strictly for general communication and research rather than the be all and end all to life.

As we've seen with smart phones, more technology does not necessarily make our lives easier. People are becoming so addictive to being connected, of needing to see if their lives are validated through tweets and pictures, that this timeline may send some over the edge as they desperately search for something to make themselves seem like someone.

I wonder if that was what Captain Ramius had in mind, in "The Hunt For Red October"? http://www.imdb.com/character/...
