Re:Failure timeline
I thought it was interesting that the acceleration has to go past 3 gees to *arm* the device, then back below three gees to actually *deploy* it. [...] Is this a new design, I wonder, or is this a tried-and-true method that's worked better than anything else so far?

Re:Do not resuscitate
B5 was lost for the same reason that Netscape was: Too little effort expended. I refer, of course, to Crusade. Boy, I wanted to like that, but it had nothing to grab me with whatsoever. The acting was awful, you'd have thought that after that almost killed them in the first season of B5 (I've had to show people season 2 after just a couple episodes of season 1 because they were going to give up on the show based on the woodenness of the characters) they would have considered that when they made the spinoff show. Netscape killed itself by starting to suck ass in version 4, and Babylon 5 killed itself by failing to execute on Crusade.

Enough Already!
I'm getting tired of all of this propaganda from both sides. These people are so closed minded and ignorant. They don't have any opinions of their own, they do what they are told by whatever side they follow. They need to wake up, both parties are driven by the almighty dollar. Neither care about anyone other than themselves. This system is broken.

Explored fully, the Galaxy has not.
Honestly, there is a good bit of life in the Star Wars Galaxy. Take a notice of the Jedi and Sith Wars in the Knights of the Old Republic or the rumored Spielberg Star Wars Miniseries.
The "Rise of Vader" done in HDTV format would be impressive due to Speilberg getting his directing/producing chops in made for TV movies and a wealth of experiance.
With the animation studio ready and there is plenty of Star Wars lore to be explored. The difference between the Lucas Empire and Viacom is that LucasFilm/Arts/IML/Skywalker Sound/Lucasfilm Animation is all in house and focused on Star Wars while Star Trek is nothing more than a former Desilu Production under the Viacom Empire.

Propaganda of the 1980 Election
I remember the Presidential election of 1980 when Ronald Reagan was running agains Jimmy Carter. (Some of us remember back this far!) It was a different world then. The US was shamed over the hostages in Iran, and many people worried about the perceived military superiority of the Soviet Union. Add to that the notion -- half-believed by some -- that the world might come to an end in the year 2000.
Now, many of you too young to remember all this might laugh in disbelief, but google the movie, The Late Great Planet Earth. This movie came out in 1979, and was basically a survey of the current world-political situation illuminated by the Bible's Apocalypse, the predictions of Nostradamus, and so forth. This movie got a lot of attention and play before the election.
At the time I was young and impressionable (12 years old), but I remember watching the movie on television (maybe cable) with my father and brothers and being scared out of my wits.
What does this have to do with the election? It was thought by many that Reagan was the only chance for America to regain power and respect on the world stage, thereby averting the triumph of evil and the likely destruction of the planet in a nuclear holocaust. Of course, this seems kind of crazy to me now. Nobody worries about such things. (Now kids and other impressionable people worry about some kind of ecological holocaust.)
I don't know how effective this movie was in getting some people to turn out to vote and vote for Reagan, and I'm sure it wasn't meant to be propaganda for Reagan, but I wouldn't be surprised to find out it was somewhat effective.
Michael Moore's movie could be as much hogwash as Nostradamus. That won't matter if it makes it to TV though. It will be the kind of propaganda that will make a difference. Personally, I think it is nothing but out-of-context "truths" carefully edited to promote lies. Whoever one wishes in the White House, no honest person could wish for this kind of propaganda to become a part of the American political scene. If that happens, it would be a worse thing than having the wrong guy in the White House.

Here's hoping...
that this gets the political debates out of the other stories on the main page. I get kind of sick of reading the comments in a post about Linux or technology or something and it just degenerates in a politics debate. Now if you want to debate politics, you have a section for it--GO THERE!
I don't hold a lot of hope that it'll happen, but I did just watch Miracle last night, so who knows? -
Re:Politics on Slashdot? Never!
-
I doubt that
People on the internet, and Slashdot in particular, tend to lean more towards the European mainstream than the American mainstream.
Except, of course, on civil liberties issues, where Europe's left-fascism makes the police-state folk in the US Justice Department envious: the UK's got CCTVs everywhere, issues "antisocial behavior orders" prohibiting people from (in one instance) making sarcastic comments to their neighbors; France bans movies that criticize its bloody colonial wars, and so on. -

Re:Creepy Faces
You better check out Square USA's CGI work in an episode in Animatrix anthology, as it has photorealistic rendering of human faces much more advanced than FF:Spirits Within. The characters are very very close to real human faces.
As for FF7:Advent Children, those character designs are intentionally more anime-style oriented, reminiscent of the original FF7 designs, so realism is not wanted by viewers. it should be rendered in surrealistically beautiful, fantasic tastes as it is Final Fantasy anyway. -
"mepris"
Clearly she has a boyfriend whose trust in her she interprets as indifference
As most girls do. Men and women handle trust in another way I guess. Movies are made about this issue, such as Mepris (Contempt), with BB for instance.

Hrm.. could they have stolen the idea from...Looks like they took the idea directly from this movie, where the advertisements were directly targeted at Jon Anderton (and everyone else) as they walked by them in futuristic, ad-driven, corporate America.
If this is where we're heading, folks... I'd be very scared.

Re:Collection agencies are scum-rebuttal, url help
Don't like how creditors treat you? PAY YOUR FUCKING BILLS.
How are you supposed to do that if paying said bills will put you at risk of:
1) Not having proper food to eat.
2) Not having proper clothing to wear.
3) Not having proper shelter to live in.
Yes, one should fufill all their financial obligations, but to do so at the expense of one's health and well-being is stupid!
How can one 'PAY [THEIR] FUCKING BILLS' if they are dead, too sick, or otherwise unable to work to earn money to pay said bills? That is the inevitable outcome when one does not pay food/clothing/shelter bills first!
Then, in another thread, the poster said he got $300,000.00 in medical care to save his life. He can't 'pay in full' as his estate is only worth $70,000.00 What should he do?
To address the bigger issue....
Should the American health care system be 100% totally moved to an 'ability to pay' setup to avoid giving needed health care to 'lives not worthy to be lived' because the ones in need cannot afford the health care they need to stay alive!
Here are some 'horror stories' of such thinking
John Q (2002)
License To Kill / Hospitals reserve the right to pull your plug
Then there is the horrific true(?) story of the dying kid who was 'kicked out' out of the emergency room and left to die in an alley(?) on the side of the hospital -- anybody have a URL to that story as I wanted to link to it but couldn't find it via Google. -
In the future
this will be able to fit into a glowing ping-pong ball and crammed up your nose.

Re:Its already happened
Funny though, usually Hollywood uses the fact that in adapting a *novel* they have to figure out what to omit.
Sometimes they do get it right. The English Patient was made into a good movie (if you like weepy romances, which in this case I happened to). It was derived from a mediocre book of the same name, but in fact focused on a single eposode. The main characters of the book became peripheral characters in the film, and vice versa.
I hate to praise a generally creepy industry like Hollywood, especially since they usually do such a poor job of book adaptation, but c'mon, they do sometimes really improve on the material.
And also, the novel, which can include lots of inner dialogue, description, and tangental matter, really depends on different expressive vehicles from a film. Most "faithfully filmed books" are truly dreadful films!

GNAA Fristage PostageGNAA ATTACKED BY INTERNET TERRORISTS
GNAA ATTACKED BY INTERNET TERRORISTSDuring the night cowardly terrorists claiming to be from p2pchat launched an unprovoked and despicably dastardly attack against Evolnet. Their goal was to disrupt the benign activities of the upstanding organization GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of AmeriKKKa).
Although their motives are completely unknown, seeing as GNAA is universally loved, their affiliations and funding seem to come from some notorious terrorists well known to the GNAA. Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda has endorsed the attacks as "beneficial to the Linux (a communist operating system made by Lunis Torvald from code that he stole from SCO) movement's goal of re-enslaving gay niggers everywhere."
The sinister Zionist organization #politics has also endorsed the attack. It is becoming increasingly clear that they were involved in the recruitment and payment of the script kiddies that perpetrated the attack.
GNAA has promised reprisal for the attack. Being the responsible citizens that they are, they have reported the IP address of at least one of the Jews involved in the attack. They are also looking in to a possible connection between this attack and the attempt to assassinate GNAA president timecop earlier. It is currently believed that #politics is stepping up its deplorable attacks against GNAA.
Recently promoted #GNAA op x_over_ln_x was quoted as saying "bring it on" when asked about #politics' and the Linux community's recent attacks. He may, however, have not heard the question and was referring to the Jewish catamite he was about to rape.

Re:And you, sir, are ignorant...
The "McCarthy witch hunts" [thefreedictionary.com] were NOT witch hunts (read the end). McCarthy's basic argument was "should we have people who are communists (many self admitted) in sensitive positions within our government?" He was not only right, but underestimated the extent of soviet infiltration, as the release of the Venona Project [nsa.gov] transcripts now reveal (summary here [thefreedictionary.com]).
Yeah, McCarthy was a Great American Hero, all right--where would we be today if he hadn't blacklisted one of the greatest threats to our nation, subversive Communist propagandist Charlie Chaplin? -
