Yet another reason...
President Bush has sharply restricted federal funding for research on human embryonic stem cells to keep the government from supporting research that he believes destroys human life.
Yet another reason, far as I'm concerned, to get that bum out of office! -
Re:Cinema is selling out waaay too much...I didn't give credit to Jackson who is actually working at another piece of original art (the KingKong movie).
Don't get me wrong, I loved LOTR, Bad Taste, and Dead Alive, but do we really need another giant monkey movie? Ah well, I'll probably blow my 10 shekels on it anyway...

WOWGNAA Claims Responsibility for Killing 3000 Blogs
GNAA Claims Responsibility for Killing 3000 BlogsGNAUK (the UK branch of the GNAA) consultant rolloffle stood ecstatically in front of the massive GNAUK London office skyscraper. Waving his massive nigger hands for silence, he smiled and announced with glee that the GNAA was the cause of the 3000 blogs outage.
"Well, aw'right, now aw'right! It's due to our persistent shitflooding and blogbashing efforts that we can claim this spectacular victory over a major epicentre of retardery! Congratulations, morons, for you have been pwned! Remember, regular local backups are your friend!"
Having concluded with these statements, the crowd burst into an ambivalent mix of outraged and delighted argument. rolloffle then unzipped his trousers and started to beat back the hordes of angry webloggers and journalists with his gigantic nigger cock, fleeing into a side alley. The massive conglomeration of people then enjoyed a spectacular fireworks display, sending the massive office building of glass and steel smashing to the ground and burying the suckers present.

Re:Gigli wasn't critically acclaimed"Ladies and Gentlemen, our target market for this movie is people who are into kinky bondage stuff." Nah, that's what The Perils of Gwendoline is for.
Now, if you tie someone up and force them to watch Gigli on endless repeat, that would be sadistic.

Re:If they don't stop making shit movies they won'
Actually, Waterworld ended up making quite a tidy profit, mainly from international and video sales. So from the point of view of the studios, it was not a flop.

Inducement and Free SpeechIf p2p providers can be found guilty for inducing "children" what about Movie and Music producers who promote questionable messages with certain types of films or music. If a neutral type of technology can be outlawed because it may be used for bad purposes, how can this type of inducing media be protected under free speech? I guess it's okay if Smith and Wesson makes the guns so long as they don't hire Bob Marley or license his song?
So would a film that portrays a fictional p2p service in a positive light also be illegal? What if it portrayed in a negative light? (probably ok) What if someone *gasp* downloaded the film via p2p? (definitely not ok--unless it's Farenheit 9/11
;). . . the not so faint scent of hypocrisy wafts up from below . . .

I saw "Clear and Present Danger" too.
While it was probably attached to an IBM mainframe, it was a StorageTek tape silo.

Viggo Mortensen isn't Swedish(or Danish). He was born in Manhattan(NYC), to a Danish father and American mother. Check out IMDB.

No offense intended...
I mentioned those three movies because they are what drove movie industries profits. I also don't think they are marketed to teenagers. Apparently you haven't seen Harry Potter.
I also find it odd you countered my sequels, with a sequel of your own. And you mentioned a movie that starred Matt Damon, the most untalented actor next to Adam Sandler. Bourne Identity anyone?
There are plenty of art houses and private theaters that show non-blockbuster movies. Heck I just seen the Triplets of Belleville at one of these. A good and original movie I might add. -
Re:Hellrazor?
They did it in this movie too.
Are we looking to make something that will shoot them frisbee style, or frag grenade style? -
Re:If they don't stop making shit movies they won'
The bottom 100 all rank 3.5 or lower.

Re:No you don't understand.
Maybe I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing movie studio executives don't get together around the boardroom table and have conversations like, "gentlemen, our fare has been too highly reviewed of late. It's time to make a real stinker. One for the record books. Instant flop."
Maybe they should. It worked in The Producers. -
Re:Speaking Of Crappy Movies
Actually, it would be more like this.

Re:little has changed..
So basically, nothing has changed since Tron?
Wrong movie there, bub. Looker predated Tron by over a year, and it actually FEATURED the trash robots running around. Just watch out for the bad guys with their "invisio-flashy-thingy" guns. -
Fuck you too!
I hate you and that goddam Winnie Cooper.
Have you seen that broad's hairy arms and that Jay Leno chin, or those loooooooosers she hangs her tits with?
She'd make a better greased-up yoda doll than a cultural icon ERmm oh wait that's redundant. -

It's not the money, it's the number of entriesOne thing that amazes me about the American box office numbers is that it is always about the amount of money, and not the number of people who viewed the movie. With inflation, increased ticket prices, matinees that end by 1pm, etc, it's the nature of the beast to have progressively better box office tallies. While "Star Wars" (including before the re-issue) had a huge take, it is smaller compared to "Titanic," although I suspect many more individuals saw Luke as opposed to Leo. Top Box Office
I know some countries like France do both (entries and box office take), which gives you a more accurate picture of how many people are seeing movies. Sure, it doesn't sound as sexy as "Biggest grossing weekend ever," but I'd give more credance to the title "Most viewed movie ever."

Re:useless matrix
I would also recommend Dark City for a different take on the alternate reality thang.

Re:If they don't stop making shit movies they won'
All I've got to say is this...
The Producers -
Re:Let me get this straight...
Did you notice that the 3 movies you reference are all sequels? All mass-market driven genre flicks that re-use the same thematic and plot devices over...and over...and over.
No offense, but I think the quality of movies has been steadily declining for years. It used to be that crime dramas staring hip-hop rap stars would be the straight-to-video releases... but lately quality films like the sequel to The Talented Mr Ripley, Ripley's Game are not even getting a theatrical release, since they won't make $20 million in the first weekend.
Face it -- the movie industry is now driven by big-bang first weekend releases targeted at teenagers who lack critical judgment. No one ever went poor marketing to teenagers directly. -
Re:If they don't stop making shit movies they won'
Sometimes they swing and miss.
SOMETIMES? You're fucking kidding me right? MONTHS at a time go by that I don't see a single movie that appeals to me. It's obvious that it isn't just me either as we see fantastic movies like The Butterfly Effect and Along Came Polly.
Those are obviously just "mistakes" right? Casts that include Ashton Kutcher as the star? Come on. -

Internet Movie Database & Yahoo Stock Data
If you want Movie information, you can grab the data files from the Internet Movie Database.
http://www.imdb.com/interfaces
My father has a large VHS collection of movies whose info he keeps updated in a spreadsheet. It was a lot of fun to link his database to the IMDB one, and start searching for movies that included my favorite actors (and were already in the house).
Another source of data that I use from the internet is daily stock data. If you go to this page Yahoo S&P 500 Info and click Historical Prices you will get a page that lists the historical data in a browser-friendly format. At the bottom of this page is an option to download the data in a comma separated value (CSV) file. -

Re:Does it bother anyone else...
Directors have always been forced for one reason or another to cut out footage they originally intended to include in a film.
It's not always the case that directors have to be "forced" to cut their films. Many are good judges of pacing and story who enjoy and embrace the trimming process, and can be quite ruthless on their own. For instance, Ridley Scott considers his original 1979 theatrical cut of Alien the best version, and was not forced into it by any stretch of the imagination. (See his interviews and commentary on the recent Alien Quadrilogy set for more details.) In fact, the studio had to beg him to revisit the cut for a 2003 "Special Edition" that would serve as a kind of reverse advertisement for the DVD set, as well as the upcoming Alien Vs. Predator.

Trivia about the sequels: "The Burly Man"
Actually, "The Burly Man" was the name the Reloaded+Revolutions production had while they were filming it. The reasons for this fact are beyond me, since the sequels had already been announced and everyone [who cared about it] knew where it was going on. And it's not as if you could keep a secret on a movie with 10 mins of credits anyway.
Want proof? It's mentioned in this article from Wired, appears on this crew-exclusive T-shirt and you can see it in a surprising amount of footage on all those behind-the-stages documentaries this boxset seems to be so prolific on.
Ew, I feel like a geek. In the bad sense of the word. -
Re:There's a trilogy?
Yeah. I've never seen that face before.

*Nothing* was as bad as 'Highlander 2'Not even any of the Matrix sequels.
Just read these. And to think I actually went to see "Highlander 2" the first weekend it was out - the audience was laughing at the film. Gawd it's awful. It would probably make a good basis for a MST3K showing, though.

Re:Ballot books and voter fraud
I'm still trying to learn more about this issue. There is an "Open Source" group that is trying to put together an independent e-voting system.
The site I was thinking about was the GPL'd E-vote site that also has a source forge website for development of this system. I think this project has some very good merits, but unfortunately they also have the attitude of "if we make it they will come". I wish them luck, and if this really does succeed I hope this project at least forms the initial basis for proper e-voting systems. The sample ballot they have made shows just what this could really turn into.
In terms of voter fraud, the problem is that trying to uncover registration fraud (which is a totally different beast from tampering with ballots after/while they are cast) is difficult at best unless you really do properly identify each individual and confirm citizenship/voter elegibility (like disqualifications for committing a certain kinds of felonies). With SCOTUS saying it is unconstititional to determine identities of voters, and with voter registration cards being handed out like campaign literature (sometimes even with campaign literature), how can you tell just who is registered and if that person really exists?
Obituaries are sometimes used to remove people from voting rolls, but what if they are missed? Where I live, the only sure way to get dropped from the voting lists is to not vote for an extended period of time, like 10 years or so.
It became a local issue here that some non-citizens were voting in the local election. State law allows for "poll observers", presumably representatives of local political parties but it can be any member of the general public. You may have to be an actual resident of the precint that you are "observing", but I don't know of any other restriction. Mainly what these observers are allowed to do is drive the poll workers nuts and get in everybody's hair. Officially they can "challenge" an individual ballot, which gets put into a seperate stack and the voter registration information if verified somehow. Election judges also can put ballots into this "provisional" category, and there are certain rules that require ballots be put there anyway, such as late registration or if the judge suspects there might be something not quite correct. Generally only about 2-3% of all the ballots are of "provisional" status.
The issue came up regarding illegal aliens in particular voting in local elections. Some people thought it was stupid to even suggest the idea, but it became an election issue and is still being discussed. A group of local citizen threatened to act as "poll watchers" and challenge everybody that was of a certain ethnic minority. Federal election officials came in and has made a minor issue into a major one, and the real issue regarding if non-citizens are voting was never really addressed.
The state Lt. Governor, who is in this state constitutionally responsible for the state election system, made IMHO a rather stupid statement: "We have determined that there is not even one non-citizen registered to vote in this state." How that was determined and the blanket 100% certainty makes me wonder if this really is a bigger issue than is being made out right now. If you can't keep non-citizens from voting, how about duplicate registrations (being registered to vote in more than one precinct, even with the same name, and voting in each precinct), or controlling people voting in behalf of somebody else, like a boss, union rep, or voting through extortion. At the moment it can't even be verified that this might be happening, so the presumption is that it is not happening. I consider that strong logic (yeah, right!*) Not a single issue I've mentioned here even has to deal with an election judge, because the fraud occurs even before the voting booth opens up.

Maximum Overdrive?
It's a cardinal sin not to read the article first, but the intro blurb has filled my head with the image of the ultimate villian, that coke machine that killed all the little baseball players in that classic man vs machine thriller Maximum Overdrive.
