Re:While I agree it's not as good as...
The iPhone and Google's phones were hyped badly before launch
I saw plenty of ads for Windows 7 phones on the London Underground -- which I only use a couple of times a week.
This one was so bad I took a photo. "Life, live on Windows Phone 7" "Thinking I could be cracking on with work instead of reading ads". What kind of person buys a phone so they can do work on the tube? I can only assume they're targeting the corporate market -- i.e. that the people buying the phones won't be the ones using them.
Android, iPhone and Nokia advertise games, books, puzzles, newspaper, social networking, photo sharing, travel (flight times to sunny beach, last train home after a night out) -- things people want to do.

Re:in my experience, not as bad as Bing
Just yesterday I wanted to download VLC media player. Top link on Bing: repackaged with junk seach engine and crapware newsletters. Top link on Google: the home site which linked to the sourceforge download. Of course Microsoft could be doing that on purpose for Open Source software...
What country are you in? It's really only US that have Bing yet (rebranding old Live Search in all the other countries to Bing without actually having the product is an amazing decision btw..) and a search for VLC on Bing US gives me a very useful and relevant top result. With direct links to download even for Mac and Ubuntu versions:

Sorry to respond to myself, but I should also add the corridors-with-monsters paradigm dominates a lot of FPSs these days, too. Gears of War, Killzone, etc.
Excellent web comic on the subject:

Re:cloud vs VM
My startup is launching a service to do this for browsers pretty soon and the tech is flexible enough to repurpose for more typical VM tasks later. Here's a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/UXBdJ.png The final version runs the browsers in kiosk mode to save screen real estate taken up by the window decoration and start menu. http://browserling.com/

I remove the search, move the address to the right, navigation buttons to the left of that, and file menu left of that. One bar for all my browsing needs:
http://imgur.com/TheYv.pngYes, I realize that's Firefox on Linux... but I set up my Windows machines (Win Explorer/Firefox) the same (with the exception of IE and Win7 because they both removed the ability to use my PC how I like.) If I need to search, I type it in the address bar and it takes me to Google or I just go to Google.

Thermodynamics please
You know, coming from slashdot, I would have thought you'd have an understanding of thermodynamics.
Or at least try to make a look into things before making a kneejerk response.Even if it's powered by the dirtiest Coal plants available, it'd still be cleaner than conventional cars.

http://www.grist.org/article/new-study-finds-that-plug-in-hybrids-rule-in-all-possible-futures/As for batteries, both Nickel and Lithium are nontoxic, and easily recyclable.
(Not to mention, Nickel is the 5th most common element on earth. So it's not that "rare".)
_What's more, if we are going to solve anything with global warming, we would need to upgrade our grid anyways.
And it takes about 20 years to shift over to a new car fleet. So we best get started ASAP.Luckily, we have options:

Said a friend: "No worse than a doctor seeing it."
Respectfully, I disagree.
1. You can screen your doctor for trustworthiness.
2. You can choose to visit a doctor of a gender you prefer.
3. Doctors are bound by the Hippocratic Oath: I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know.
4. Doctors rarely take, much less retain, nude photographs of your body.Collection and use of personal information, including digital photographs, paves a road for government with inscrutable purposes: using information about people while denying them the ability to choose how that information is used. This is a severe tilt in balance between the power of the people and the power of the state. A tilt, to emphasize, that is unfavourable to the people.
In Smith v. City of Artesia, 1989, the court said, "Privacy is inherently personal. The right to privacy recognises the sovereignty of the individual." What is more private than our private parts? What can the general public be subjected to, en masse, that is more personally invasive than a pat-down or nude photo?
More blunt? Can do.
The choice: allow an anonymous agent to take nude photographs of your child, or let strangers grope your child until their hands meet "resistance": a euphemistic way to say, "touch their testicles, penis, or vulva."
Any job that forces someone to feel a child's crotch so as to encourage parents to usher their children through a machine that takes nude photographs--without probable cause of having committed a crime--is a job that aught not to exist.
Systematic violations of our private areas must be countered with outrage and utmost resistance (!) against corporations and governments alike. The TSA are not police and North America has no Police States, yet.
Add to this the uncertain health risks. Terahertz waves have resonant effects that can unzip double-stranded DNA, which, ultimately, could significantly interfere with gene expression and DNA replication. Think children, pregnant women, or sperm. And guess what wave frequency x-ray backscatter machines use? Hint: THz. http://arxiv.org/abs/0910.5294
My emotions surge at the thought of people speaking or acting out against tyranny. People must express themselves vehemently and eloquently against the infractions that governments permit to be made on our freedoms. Sometimes one voice, or one courageous action, is enough to inspire a nation. http://i.imgur.com/cfifB.jpg
Martin Niemöller foretells of what happens when people--even those who prefer to drive than fly--keep quiet: They came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for me and by that time no one was left to speak up.
John Dewey stated, "We cannot separate the idea of ourselves and our own good from our idea of others and of their good." When we protect the rights of individuals by forcing Corporations and Governments to sit at the same table as Respect, Dignity, and Decency, we protect all of our society.

Re:Capitalism
True, but the situation with NASA is more like: The plumber says it will probably end up costing $110 to fix the sink. You say that $90 is the most you will pay AND he can only use his ATK wrench and USA pipe-cutters to do it, even when he says he might have tools in his bag that work better. Since you're the boss, he does it the way you want, but isn't very pleased with you.
Oh, and NASA's budget hasn't "taken a hit" per-se, but the last time NASA was told to build a new space ship, congress at least gave them a 50% bump in funding for a few years for the extra cost involved in building it. Recently congress has done nothing of the sort, which leaves us with at least a half-decade without a space ship to fly. Here are some charts I generated last year to back that up: http://imgur.com/HE5kf.png -

GNAA Endorses Construction of "Ground Zero Mosque"
Leonard K. Isler - New York, NYNew York, NY - GNAA today announced its endorsement of the construction of the now-infamous "Ground Zero Mosque" that is planned to be built two blocks away from the site of the September 11th World Trade Center Zionist attacks.
The construction of the mosque community center is mainly opposed by the Zionist hate group "Stop Islamization of America" and its Jewish supporters, who argue that the construction of a mosque community center would be a "victory for Islam against America".
What SIOA fails to mention is that the September 11th attacks were, in fact, not carried out by Muslims, but by Zionist Jews. To combat this misconception, GNAA has endorsed the construction of the mosque community center.
"Ms. Geller is a known Jewish sympathizer", explains GNAA associate Klerck, "she is more than happy to spread these lies through fearmongering and the exploitation of public ignorance, using this Zionist hate group as a mouthpiece. It's not even a mosque, it's a community center. There was no other way to combat these Zionist lies, we simply had to endorse the construction of the community center."
"The community center is a much-needed thing in the Muslim community of New York", explains GNAA operative Jmax, "what other location would be the ideal place to pray for the extermination of the Jewish race five times a day? Insha'Allah!"
Ms. Geller declined to comment in person, speaking only in a brief interview conducted over the phone. The Jewish mouthpiece merely said "we must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children", wiping humus from her mouth while dining at a Bruegger's in lower Manhattan, and dialing her cell phone with her nose.
SIOA has declined to comment on the synagogue that is planned to be built on Ground Zero.

"The trouble with using LEDs or any other artificial light sources to grow algae is that algae are at best about 5% efficient in converting light energy into stored chemical energy (though this is much better than any land plant)."
No, the problem with using LEDs is the photosynthetic flux density drops DRAMATICALLY the second the light hits the surface of the water.
This is remedied by using high-output SMDs with a narrow emission angle.
BTW, we're already at the stage where we can produce plants (this includes certain algae species,) without needing light at all.
Too bad NASA seems 100% uninterested, as this is THE method to provide food and nutrition for humans and livestock in space with an absolute minimum of power required.

You would think that, but I've been working on systems to produce far more while consuming far less.
As another example, an acre of barley grass takes about 100,000 gallons of water to produce on regular land, and about two weeks for usable animal fodder harvest. Newer systems I work on cut that down to about 1500 gallons, it happens in 7 days, and we don't even need ANY source of light. We grow it in completely dark sheds.
And we have these already in production for growing biofuel-producing algae, so your assumption would be somewhat wrong. The Middle East is one of my bigger clients.

Re:Tutorial on solar cell spectral response
"Exactly. Take a look at that curve: "blue" is the part to the left of the peak, where it drops off abruptly below about 475 nm, on the far left side of the curve"
BZZT wrong. Here's a slightly more detailed graph. http://imgur.com/CxCQC.png The drop-off doesn't occur until 440nm. The HUGE falloff doesn't occur until 375nm, where we hit the UV range.
"and there's not a lot of UV below the atmosphere even if it were used"
This is simply not true as well. Barely any UVC, yes, thanks to our ozone layer, but loads of UVB and UVA are present, and that amount rises as you go higher up in the atmosphere.
"Optimum single-layer solar cell bandgap, for terrestrial spectrum below the atmosphere, is about 1.4-1.5 eV. (look it up.)"
For inefficient silicon solar cells. MEH-PPV has roughly double that (3.0eV) and as a result has higher efficiency in absorbing blue light versus a silicon panel, which roughly ignores it, but also is less efficient at absorbing IR versus a silicon panel.
Your knowledge about solar cells appears to be a bit outdated.

Re:Maybe...
You may think it has a "clunky interface", but I personally like it much more than Chrome. Though, I end up using Chrome more often because of synchronized bookmarks and I use multiple machines. That doesn't mean I like the interface. I just find that it has one killer feature I would rather not live without.
As far as interfaces: Firefox > Chrome > IE8 (I have not used Safari or Opera, but I imagine they are Chrome-like in going for form over function.) I do however combine all the Firefox toolbars into one nice thin bar at the top:

Re:thrusting
"We're in the "blue LED phase" of 3D right now, where everyone is using it just because it's new."
I'd get into why I use blue LEDs but then I'd have about 200 comments just to get everything across.
You must be new. LEDs have plenty of uses, especially the blue ones, which are quite often the base for white diodes. The higher energy potential of blue light makes it easier to pump out more photons of green or red, and you can tune that pretty easily to achieve any color temp of white you desire.
Not to mention the horticultural applications - http://imgur.com/gBN02.jpg
Arguably, 3D is very useful, it's just that not one single person has been able to implement it in a convenient and reliable (and usable) format. nVidia is actually on its SECOND 3D run (I had a wired active-shutter glasses port on my old TNT2) and at least this time it's wireless. Not sure about sync given DAC/ADC/wireless lag.
