Re:Getting people in the door

how about a bake-off?
I'd like to see a thorough comparison between the LixSystems' $560 system
http://www.linuxtechtoys.com/ltt/product_info.php/ cPath/24_27/products_id/237
and Interact-TV's $600 system
http://store.interact-tv.com/store/product_info.ph p?cPath=9&products_id=81.
And any others that might be out there. -
How about TellyServer then ?
http://www.interact-tv.com/
Better prices, no fees (yo!), upgradeable storage, add tuners, soon to support HDTV -
Re:Apple
Prebuilt mythtv systems are available from several sources:
http://www.monolithmc.com/?gclid=CMLM0b3atoQCFQZLG god2CimAA
http://store.interact-tv.com/store/
http://www.hackmyth.com/
And building your own is not that difficult or expensive. -
Re:Relevant question
Not a pre-built MythTv, but a pretty similar pre-built device can also be found here http://www.interact-tv.com/
-
For those who don't like...
..MythTv there is always interact-tv.
You can still develop for it and the guide is free as well.
I for one haven't decided which one I should get. -
Re:What's the easiest?
What're my options for buying something pre-built that will work well, no monthly subscription fee, etc?
It's called a TiVo. And you pony up the extra $300 for lifetime guide data.
Actually it's called Interact-TV -
Re:Is it a myth
In that case wouldn't a Telly system from interact tv be what he's looking for.

Re:In a word: WOW!No PAL support yet, it seems.
From their support forums:
We are working on a PAL version, the hardware configuration we have supports PAL. We have small modifications to do in screen layout for the increased resolution of PAL.

Re:You may also want to see this....
As long as it's just encoding, it should be fine. MPEG-2 hardware version is on the way - see http://www.interact-tv.com/itvfaq/index.php?sid=9

Re:Starts at 800$US!I think it's a very decent price, you added a wifi card which is silly, and they say you can stick your own HDs in it(with 2 spare spaces yet). For the time and money that goes into building a MythTV box I'd say this is a great price.
As far as I know it's the only commercial PVR that uses MPEG4 so you get several times the video per meg vs. any other commercial PVR. I'd buy one if I didn't already have my MythTV box.

I bought one for kicks...
from the more-money-than-brains dept.
I bought one. My money, nahh, company money for R&D.
Buy one here and rip it to shreds so you can learn all about it!

I'll post my review sometime. -
Re: Have a look at this: Media Ready 4000
Thanks for the link to MediaReady 4000. Very useful.
Do you know how it compares to Interact-TV's MC1000?
-
GPL violation?
from their FAQ: [http://interact-tv.com/faq.php]
Q: Can I buy the Telly software separate from the hardware?
A: No. Currently Telly is sold as a complete unit. The software isn't sold separately. If you have a hardware platform that you would like to run EOS/Telly on, contact our dealer program.
um...... dare i ask if i can download a tarball? -
Re:Okay ... NO
Well, I think this would look just fine next to a TV and stereo, certainly better then a generic white box. Not too sure about the wireless keyboard, I wonder how often you actually have to use that. A whole keyboard would look pretty silly sitting on the coffee table all the time.
-
Whoa, itvXUL?
From the description of their "media OS" based on Linux, http://interact-tv.com/EOS.php, I noticed something...
ItvXUL: XML based description language for describing itvgui based applications.
Does that mean their UI is based on http://www.mozilla.org/projects/xul/? -
doesn't support dvd writing *yet*From the FAQ:
Can you record and store TV programs and later burn them on a CD?
Yes, Telly's Video Library supports an archiving feature. Eventually Telly will support DVD burning; the current MC1000 supports a CD-RW drive. You will be able to expand your unit to include a DVD-RW drive in the near future. Also you can't pause the live feed which is imo one of the best features of Tivo
Is it possible to pause/rewind/skip-commercials of live TV broadcasts?
Currently not on live TV broadcasts, but once recorded, you can skip 30-second intervals, pause, and rewind. -
Re:here is the ultimate set-top-box
I think the Telly comes close to this description, except for the games. It's got the gawd-awful Via integrated video so you aren't likely to be successful playing quick-twitch games on it. Works fine for on-screen menus though.
-
Re:And, before the "I can make a tivo" people post
What makes most of them pathetic is the complexity of the software. TiVo's software is limited but does its assigned job well.
If you don't want to build a super-TiVo from scratch but like the idea of hacking your own changes and additions, you may want to look at Telly. It's built off a Linux base but you get the hardware and software package already integrated and ready to go. -
If they ever start actually selling this ...
Check out Telly.
It's a Linux based box with photos, pvr, music, etc. with TV out and IR. If they can ever bring this to market, it'll run $699.
I was going to build my own, but would end up spending more cash and building a sub-par hack UI. I need something that the wife can work so I can toss my 13 yr. old VCR before it dies.
