Look for B&H, Adorama, J&R
There are a few fine NY stores: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ http://www.adorama.com/ http://www.jandr.com/ In particular, B&H tends to carry everything photo related. Adorama carries almost as much as B&H. I've seen people happy with J&R, and I think 17th Street Photo (but I'm not sure of the last one), but they don't tend to have the depth B&H and Adorama has. So if you need say an Olympus 35-100mm f/2 lens, they will carry it, but you will get the glazed eye look if you ask for it at Best Buy. My one beef with B&H is they don't want to ship to maildrop places like The UPS store (I've had problems with delivery to the house, and prefer to get things delivered to the UPS store where somebody will sign for it, and I can pick it up at my leisure). So I tend to order from Adorama more often. Note that the price on these stores tends to be a fair price, but it isn't a 'deal' that the scam sites pretend to have.

Problem solvedJust pick up one of these. It's a Yamaha receiver, about $300, that allows you to adjust the audio to match the video and eliminate the problem! Adjustable from 0 to 100 ms.

Yes, J&R
J & R Music World is a really good store for that. Their prices might not be the best in the city, but they are consistently good. I have found them to be a reputable computer dealer, and they've been in the business for over twenty years. They are on Park Row, right by City Hall. You can't miss them, their various stores (Computers, cameras, music, books, videos, etc) take up almost an entire block.

Check Out J and R Computer World
Another alternative you have is to visit J and R Computer World and buy a laptop from one of the best computer stores in the city.

J&R, Best BuyTry Best Buy on 23rd & 6th Ave for your generic hp's, compaq's. J&R on Park Row - www.jandr.com is a great source for everything else. J&R will also have deals on close-outs and refurbished models. A friend of mine recently got a Dell laptop there for $600, some 1.5 GHz processor, DVD-ROM, 15" display.
J&R is a good place both for new & refurb units, I'd definitely go there. The other big chains (Best Buy, CompUSA, etc) might be worth a visit, but J&R will price match any local competitors.
If you're also looking for a camera, be sure to hit B&H Photo & Video. They have the most amazing conveyor system for moving things around the store, it's worth it to stop by just to see that!

J&R
The best reputable dealer in NYC is J&R Music and Computer World. They have a good selection of laptop computers that you can buy and take away right there; naturally they don't have Dell since Dell sells through the web only.
You can start by taking a look at their selection on their web site here. You'll pay the relevant sales taxes for New York (under 10%) but you'll get a much better deal than the Dell you are looking at.
Of course it's totally you to you whether you declare the thing when you arrive back in the UK and pay the relevant UK taxes.

If you like spoken word...
J&R is offering $100 off any iPod if you sign up for audible.com's monthy service. The monthly fee is $14.95, and entitles you to one book and one program (Car Talk, etc.) a month. So, if you are a big fan of spoken word, audio books, etc., it's a pretty good deal. Best I've found, anyway. And their price is about $10 lower than MSRP as well.

Re:Join Audible, get $100 off
And after checking J&R Music and Computer World, they've already got the 10 GB iPod for 283.99, so for $100 off for joining Audible that would be just $183.99 for a 10 GB iPod, compared to $299 at Apple.com. The 40 GB iPod is $473.99, which becomes $373.99 after the $100 off offer, compared to $499 at Apple.com.

10 GB Apple iPod @ $283.99
J & R Music and Computer World has a 10 GB Apple iPod for $283.99. I know this isn't the greatest of rebates...

One word for you: Archos.OK, OK, they are still HDD-based, but they just rock.
Let me list some reasons:
- They are much cheaper than all the competition. I mean real cheap.
- They look flimsy, but are a lot more resistant than they look.
- They can record music (at least, the Jukebox Recorder models can). Bootleg concerts, here we go!
- You can change the battery they use.
- They sound great.
- You can do very cool stuff with them
Buying an Archos instead of an iPod was probably the best decision I made recently. At first, I was kind of wondering "Why did I buy this thing?", but these days it's mostly: "How did I do when I did not have one?".

Re:RTFA.
So you won't believe the ads are easy to remove unless someone "in the know" tells you they are. I'm going to assume you're not a contributor to Linux (in the source code sense). Thus, you should either buy retail version ( as low as $40 in some places ), or deal with their advertisements. That is, of course, as long as you support their development.
I don't know, I guess you might not support them but have to use them anyways. Does your work force Mandrake on you? Wanna trade jobs?

Re:Automated patches for pirated copies?
I'm so sick of people complaining that Microsoft's OS software is so expensive. I spent $150 for the OEM copy of Windows XP Pro that I own. How so, you say? Well, you can buy it here. If you're interested in XP Home, you can get it here for $90. For comparison, since I am also a Mac OS X user and a SUSE/Redhat user as well, you can buy Mac OS X (Jaguar) for about $120 here (I paid $130 when it came out). Furthermore, my copy of SUSE 8.1 Pro Edition cost $80 here and my copy of Redhat 9.0 Pro cost $150 here. The non-Pro editions of SUSE and Redhat are cheaper, of course, but come with less packages and less support. The bottom line: if you're going to spend money for your OS, you will probably spend an average of $80-$150 per release depending on your needs, regardless of the OS vendor. Otherwise, you can continue being an unsupportive hyprocrite freeloader and spend $0 by using your favorite P2P app and get whatever OS you want.

Wrong prices with Froogle - but I don't understand
Froogle detects a certain camera as USD 499, although it really costs 30 USD less, which you can only see if you put that camera in the shopping cart. Here's the explanation - what's wrong with the price being an advertisement? Maybe someone can shed some light on this for me.

MK-90 is Emerson EWT950
More info on the MK-90 (Emerson EWT950) here.
I remember having something like this in 1972. The aftermarket 8-track player in my Dad's VW squareback bolted under the dash and transmitted to the OEM AM radio. We eventually got an FM insert for the 8-track (plugged right in like a tape cassette). Voila, FM radio with 8-track-via-AM quality. Ahhh, good times.

Re:Finally!! but ..
400W is no biggie, it's being recommended even for a single P4 processor. You can get one of those at J & R's Computer World in NYC for $80, or order it from them.
You'll definitely need a case full of fans though! My 1.2G Athlon system will be heating my home office this winter all by itself!

Eclipse Computer Light! In the less-than-$300 category, I'd like an Eclipse Computer Light -- a light specifically designed to sit atop a computer monitor. They're available at ThinkGeek ($39.99), but you can actually get them cheaper elsewhere ($34.99 at J&R).

Philips Pronto
I bought a Philips Pronto, a similar product, just last night. This is one of the coolest products Philips has ever released. I decided to buy the Pronto over the Harmon Kardon for a few reasons. First, the Harmon Kardon was co-developed with Microsoft. I don't trust a software company who can't make software with making consumer electronics. That's just me tho'. Second, the screen is not as big. Third, it has NO WHERE NEAR the expandability that the Pronto has. --!Switching to Plug mode!-- The Pronto has a meg of flash and is completely programmable. You can learn commands sent at frequencies of up to 56KHz, so that will cover most consumer-grade remotes. I have completely programmed my Pronto to control my TV (Picture-in-Picture as well), my DVD player, my Amp, and my 50CD jukebox. The touch screen is more than responsive enough for my needs. You can download pre-programmed configuration files for common components of your home audio/video system on to your PC, and then download those files over a serial port to the Pronto. Firmware upgrades are also available through the PC software. The list price on the Pronto is $399 but I got mine for $275. I can't say where, but you can get them from J&R for I believe $300. If you want the rechargable pack, you need to pay another $80, so I skipped on that and am using Double A's (4 of them). I've been told one set of batteries will get you about 6 months of normal usage. Phillips has certainly outdone themselves on this one. I'm really happy with mine. Some sites you may want to check out if interested: Remote Central - reviews of both the Harmon Kardon, Pronto, and another similar Sony product, features&specs lists, cool stuff Remote Central Review of the Pronto - nice review, nice pictures Philips Pronto site - nice pictures of the unit Pronto Edit - this is the free software you can use to download to/update the Pronto Pretty sweet unit, I highly reccomend it.

Its been around for some time now.
I have seen those in several video equipment stores here in NYC, usually in the $500 to $600 range.
Here is one example.
Later.
