Re:ChutzpahBecause Ted Bundy likes Christmas? Because The Red Green show is hosted by treacherous Canadians? Because "blue" is God's color so red and green belong to the devil? Really, Jack. What "obvious" point am I too dumb to see.

Do you have any recipies with (a) gerbil(s) as the main ingredient?
So far, I've collected:
Gerbil in the microwave (the perfect quick meal for the starving college student)
Gerbil Soup, She Devil-style
As you can see, my list is far from complete. I'd appreciate any new gerbil recipies you can offer. -
GOOD!
I work with joecartoon.com, and I know they will be VERY happy to see this, as they had already sued Zuccarini to get about half a dozen mispellings of that domain name turned over. I was the one that actually transferred them _from_ Zuccarini to the joecartoon.com servers - I never had any contact with Zuccarini tho - just his laywer.

Re:DIE FUCKWAVE SLASH, DIE !
> So when did this turn into a discussion on Windows?
You pounded away at how these features *DEFAULT TO OFF*. My counterargument was that in Windows, "NO" doesn't necessarily mean "NO", and various stuff has ended up being executed without the end-user being asked.
> I totally understand the flaws inhertent to Windows, and
> therefore do not run it in any sort of server configuration.
That's where I disagree with you. There is a difference between rendering data and executing code, and Macromedia has crossed the line. I remember the days of BBS's when it was *POUNDED* into people not to download and execute every program you came across. Yet today, webpages *DEMAND* that you download their code and *EXECUTE* it.
The difference between *RENDERING DATA* (text, pictures, streaming audio/video) and *EXECUTING MOBILE CODE* is clear in my mind. If I ran telnet server, and you typed in a shell script and executed it, I assume you understand the security risk. That is *EXACTLY* what happens when I run a browser and a webpage sends javascript or SWF commands to it. Just like telnet, thare is *SUPPOSED* to be a sandbox to prevent malicious stuff. Too often, it doesn't work. That's true in unix, and it's true in Windows. You *ARE* running a server if your browser executes java, javascript, activeX, or shockwave. Macromedia *BRAGS* to developers about their improved scripting language. Hello... one of the first things I did back in my Windows days was to remove Windows Scripting Host, now someone else wants to execute their scripts on my machine. Screw them.
> Your arguement is flawed because it works off an almost Luddite fear of an unknown.
In linux one of the basic principles of security is not to run unnecessary public services. SWF is one that any web page can access, I don't want to run it any more than I want to run ftpd or httpd. What's "Luddite" about that ?
> I will not deny that this feature poses some sort of a security risk,
> but what feature doesn't in some way. This offers a benefit to the user
That last part is absolute bull. On a small number of sites, a 3D-VRML plugin is nice. At sites like http://www.joecartoon.com shockwave is actually useful. At 95% of webpages, it's not really necessary. Not being able to get into the Bell Canada website without Flash is an obscenity. I notice that they do do offer a by-pass for registered shareholers who want to vote online. Web designers take this too personally, and don't allow bypass options often enough. -
Re:Uninstalling Flash
But how can you possibly live without Joe Cartoon?
-
Re:I hate patentsAmen! I hope it will rot in hell!
On thing we have to think about is that many people make their money by making flash animations/presentations/sites. I personally have a good friend who only does exactly that. Okay, he's into Marketing, so that's probably his evil side
:-)
Note that I have thought of flash as a non-web technology that was abominated to run on the web. I have absolutely nothing against flash-based CD-Roms that are used for informational, educational or commercial presentations.Oh, and those neat humourous swf files (Can't think of any right now, but joecartoon is famous for them) I'll miss those a bit, but only a bit
:-) -
Re:"Flash" is a good name for the product
I would like to agree with you, because 99.9% of all sites I see designed with Flash are crap, but there are exceptions to everything.

Re:Price Is Right.
Maybe not in Santa Cruz, but high-altitude used to be a common means of euthanasia. See:
http://www.ccac.ca/guides/english/V1_93/chap/chx ii .htm [www.ccac.ca]
for details. FWIW, the practice is now "discouraged" but it wouldn't surprise me if it still happens in lower-income pounds and such...
Physical methods of euthanasia include stunning, cervical dislocation, electrocution, pithing, decapitation, shooting, maceration, microwave radiation, and exsanguination.

Die, "Fuckwave Slash", Die
Look, if you're running a site like Joe Cartoon, that's a perfectly legitimate use for it. Unfortunately, too many 16-year kiddies hired by their uncles make it a mandatory part of the first page you see when you get to a website. That's the real problem. The majority of people in North America, let alone the rest of the planet, do *NOT* have broadband.
Maybe a successful Fuckwave Slash virus will get people to stop using it. Not that that's happened with Outlook. In linux, look in mozilla/plugins and/or /usr/lib/netscape/plugins and rename or remove ShockwaveFlash.class and libflashplayer.so to deactivate it. -
Re:Forget XUL, use Flash!
>because exactly that's what confuses most >computer "newbies
uh... i don't know what you are talking about but here is what i meant. Every web site has a different look and feel. This is confusing to the novice web surfer.
Anyone in the web application development business knows you need to know about 5 different technologies (minimum) to get an application out the door. With Flash you need 1 technology.
Most importantly, approach each problem with creativity and skill! Everyone knows what to do with the Frog in the blender when he starts talking trash. You don't need a "submit2 button or a scrollbar to figure that out. Approach each User Interface problem creatively! -
MS as telco savior?OK, so it's an Orwellian headline, but you do start to wonder if Microsoft's Windows-as-service will be a force to reignite consumer broadband in a few years.
"Push" sure didn't get consumer broadband to the tipping point; neither did e-commerce, voice over IP or Joe Cartoon's not-ready-for-TV rich media.
But here's the thing: Short of Intel declaring that all machines using its chips need a broadband connection, about the broadest way to encourage Bubba PC User into broadband is to tweak the OS in such a way that it forces involuntary connections -- connections for things like product activation, Passport use, etc.
There's a mountain of DSL research that says Bubba was buying DSL (when he bought it at all) primarily for the always-on feature, not for the speed. Folks don't like the dial-up process. Well, Microsoft is heading down a path that will force a lot more dialing up, so it's a safe bet there might be a lot more interest in always-on connections.
Yeah, I know: A chicken-and-egg scenario -- is Microsoft betting that pervasive Internet connectivity means less consumer fussing over the forced connections or are they assuming that people will find easier ways to make connections if they're forced to do it more often? Not sure the answer matters, really... but it's safe to assume XP (or, more likely, the sure-to-be-more-invasive successor to XP) will send more consumers down the broadband path. -

The Gods of Flash....
..acording to Qbertino:
Yugop
- my personal favorite. The only truly INTERACTIVE site I know.(check out the old stuff (archieves) too!!) Yugo Nakamura speaks the last word when it comes to design.
Gabocorp
-considered the reference of MM-rich websites by many designers. Too passive for my taste but the size/apperance ratio makes all those wannabe flashers cry...
Joecartoon
-I am a big fan of the british sort of humor (Monty Python and the sort), if you are too, youre gonna wet your pants at this site. Proves what all REAL designers know: simple but original does the trick. (Joe uses Flash 3!)
The Flashfilmfestival
-the cremé de la cremé of flashers pitch in their stuff each year to win their 'academy award' here. Beware of eyeballs falling out!
Flashguru
- you'll find everything in Flashsites that's worth being mentioned right here. Get a box close to a backbone ;-)) go siteseeing and have fun. -
joecartoon
Joe Cartoon rocks. The website that brought you the web's first killer app: blowing up a gerbil in a microwave (among other gerbil-genocidal humor).

Product Placement
One of the big bonuses of The Internet® is supposed to be "interactivity". While I actively avoid banner ads, I'd actively seek out, say, cartoons, downloadable movie clips (I'm still stuck with modem only lines as my only internet option at home for the moment), and so on - in which advertisers could pay the cartoonist/'netmovie producer/whatever for "product placement".
People going to, say, Joe Cartoon might be incredibly annoyed to have, say, a Coca-Cola ad pop up in front of them, but a substantial proportion of them might be quite eager to watch a flash animation of Mean Things Being Done To Gerbils With A Coca Cola Can(tm).
In short - Hey Advertisers! Put some CONTENT in those ads that we actually want, and maybe we'll pay attention!
---
"They have strategic air commands, nuclear submarines, and John Wayne. We have this" -
Oh no!
I'm seeing an obvious lack of Joeheads here.
Warning: not for the faint-hearted. -
This has been out for a while....
But I guess they feel that it is now a bigger threat. Maybe joecartoon and killfrog have been rooting our boxes unsuspectingly for the last year, and they are not catching on.
Oh well, my favorite resource has some more information here

Re:Please don't use Flash -- EVER!
4. Finally, using Flash cheats yourself. You're kidding yourself if you think that you need to use Flash. I can't think of one instance of where Flash has made a site better. Just about every use I've seen has been gratuitous. People don't surf the web because they want a Rich Immersive Experience. They surf because they want to find solutions to their problems or find products and services that meet their needs and wants. Flash just gets in the way. So, do yourself a favor and learn what makes the Web work well -- HTML, XHTML, CSS, and their W3C-recommended friends. Then you can toss Flash in the trash. Do it. You'll be a better human for it. Well, the very first thing that comes to mind is www.joecartoon.com If you can think of a better way than flash to do that, please tell me. And contrary to popular belief, 9 out of 10 people i know (ranging from your average "adult", to college students) surf the web for the experience, for laughs from finding new hilarious things, for meeting up with friends that they otherwise couldn't. Most of these people LIKE flash, and thats why it exists. Because your average non-elitist web user(the ones that the web works for now, even if it wasn't designed for it) likes the "Rich Immersive Experience" Journey-

Mozilla with shockwave flash
Mozilla is great and all, but every version I run into problems with Shockwave flash files. I am a frequenter of the simple humor on www.joecartoon.com and it Never loads the site correctly. Has anyone else run into this problem?

Re:What is automatic reblending?I thought it was the process conceived when one places a Gremlin in a blender and leaves a heavy weight on the on switch
Well, then I fail to see why the technology should be confined to gremlins... Can we perhaps reinvent the process for frogs and patent that?.. Sort of an "embrace and extend" strategy. I'm sure that the prior art at joecartoon will be neglected by the U.S. PTO.
Failing that, we could simply try to register a "method for unsupervized plending of small pets" as a broader patent. Anyone who's ever used a blender to get back at their kitten for peeing on the rug will have to pay up!

Re:The net's backboneI would be willing to bet that we will need a major upgrade of the backbone in the next 3-7 years. Simply because of the growth of the broadband market and the fact that the internet is catering itself to that market. I mean imagine the volume of network traffic that
/. produces simply through raw text and then imagine a site like Joe Cartoon or Shockwave.com might produce through their flash and other multimedia products being transported across the net.Yhcrana

Playing Devil's Advocate
But when they create the mp3 cd player or when the regular mp3 players for your stereo get less expensive are you still going to want to buy music CD's or rather a nice little burner(with CD-R's)?
The way I look at it is... Would you buy a piece of software, for example M$ Office deluxe for like 400 bucks when somehow miraculously a burned CD just appeared in your hard drive... Maybe you want your own registered version... (but I doubt it...)
Now on the other hand check this out... Napster Bad... Money Good!!!
