Re:Don't worry...YES! My First Troll MOD! Woot!
But, it wasn't really a troll, I honestly think that the Bush administration has manipulated the public by, for example, trying to announce the capture of terrorist suspects to steal the spotlight from his opponent. I do think the democrats have a point that Bush depends on the image of an America divided, and fear helps that division. -

Hope is on the way
I've got an idea-- let's give Microsoft a tax cut to keep those jobs in the good ol' USA.
Losing jobs to overseas factories on the unskilled or low-skilled side is sad. Losing jobs on the highly-skilled side is scary, because reversing the trend will require years of major investment in education from K-12 up.
How this will be done in the face of the baby boom retiring is a mystery to me. -
Critical Deadline Approaching!
There are fewer than 48 hours left to make your last direct contribution to the Kerry-Edwards campaign.
In the months ahead, we'll be looking to you to support the Democratic Party as it pulls John Kerry, John Edwards, and other Democratic candidates through to victory in the general election. But in the next 48 hours, you and I have one vitally important piece of business to take care of.
Make A Contribution.
Hundreds of thousands of you have come together to break all fundraising records. George Bush, Dick Cheney, the pundits, and the media thought we would be overwhelmed by the Republicans' enormous bankroll. You proved them wrong. Because of you, we are about to enter this general election stronger than any Democrat in history.
In the next 48 hours, we have to finish off this phase of our campaign with as strong a showing as possible. The media will report our final fundraising numbers as a sign of our ability to win this election. Make a contribution by visiting:
http://contribute.johnkerry.com
In March, you gave us the first push, launching our campaign against George Bush; in April, May, and June, you kept our momentum going. We've beaten his fundraising four months in a row. Think about that accomplishment: we beat the biggest, big money fundraiser in history with the power of our grassroots. But our work is not done; we need to finish strong.
Help put John Kerry in the White House!
One last thing: I need you to forward this message to your friends and family who care about the future of this country. Ask them to contribute before our deadline. A strong showing now will make all the difference on Election Day.
Thank you!

Re:Score another one for creationists
I personally believe it is far more likely and logical that this is a point for Creationism. After all look at the God that designed the monkey with the ability to adapt in such a manner to this illness. Evolution could only be given a point if this trait was passed down to offspring in such a manner that it improved their survivability and ability to breed themselves. Plague responsiveness on a small subset would typically lead to inbreeding if it was a genetic trait and we have all seen what happens when you inbreed monkeys

Re:What a waste of timeWell, if the author of the study chose a poor sample-selection method, then this study would be bunk due to bad sample.
If, however, the author used a good, random sample across the board, then I can't see why this wouldn't present a decent representation of any differences between Mac users and PC users. 2-3% of the computing world, while far smaller than the whole, is easily large enough to draw a representative sample.
Consider: Ohio represents roughly 4% of the total population of the United States. The ratio of Ohioans:Americans is statistically comparable to the ratio of Mac Users:all computer users. Can you think of a single person who might care about the differences between residents of Ohio and the rest of the nation?
Granted, the stakes in the Mac/PC poll are considerably lower, but they're every bit as statistically valid. The most interesting part of polling is examining the differences that arise between demographic groups. Assuming it was conducted properly, this poll should provide perfectly valid data pertaining to the differeces between Mac users and PC users. Whether or not the results are objectionable is beside the point.

Re:I'm tired of losing rights....
Well, at least he wants to scale it back, rather than the current administration's intent to add more to it.
While voting for it was pretty much indefensible, only 1 (Feingold) out of 100 senators voted against it and it was passed only a month and a half after 9/11. Feingold may have been the only one who actually read the thing. -
Who decides? Big brother, that's who! This is the really scary part of enacting hate-speech control laws.
I have been getting called a hate-monger and an anti-semite over at the John Kerry Forums quite a bit lately for saying that the Israeli Defence Forces should not be allowed to gun down civilians and bulldoze their homes, and that furthermore I'm sick of paying for it. I really have a hard time seeing how disagreeing with the military actions of the current political regime in Tel Aviv has anything to do with my personal feeling towards Jews (quite warm actually) but I can easily see how I will lose my ability to say such things shortly after laws like this one are passed.
Political dissent can virtually always be classified as hate speech (raise your hand if you don't hate either Dubya or Kerry) and it's next to impossible to set up hard and fast guidelines that can be interpreted objectively. Leaving interpretation in the realm of subjectivity makes it a political question, and I for one am extremely leary of allowing governments to limit political speech. Even if it means we have to let the Neonazis have the say too.

Re:Stamp of totalitarianism
The solution to the Catch-22 problem is don't play the game. Don't obey any laws passed by these people, disobey any order or any ruling of authority as a matter of principle. As Americans, you're supposed to be free. Prove it by revolting against unjust laws.
Yossarian tried that solution in the book, and it didn't work: Done properly, civil disobedience is a powerful way to protest unjust laws -- and by done properly I mean that you announce your intent to break the law, break it, and then publicly and willingly suffer the consequences -- but the solution to Catch-22 laws is to repeal or strike them down and replace the legislators who wrote them.
Laws like the "PATRIOT ACT" are attacks on America from within. They seek to turn America from a nation ruled by laws -- by checks and balances and limited government -- into a nation ruled by fear. They grant more power to the powerful, and seek to prevent a well-informed populace by denying us information.
If we respond by abandoning the playing field, and we fail to defend the rule of law from these aggressors, then we've given up one of our most powerful weapons without a fight. The law is, and should be, on our side -- the PATRIOT ACT didn't overturn the First Amendment, and the ACLU (as always) is out in front aggressively defending our freedoms.
Want to help? Donate to the ACLU. Get involved with Democracy For America. Find a candidate who shares your views, and vote in November. That's the solution to the Catch-22 problem, Yossarian. You have to jump.

Re:Cost, cost, costThat being said, John Kerry doesn't exactly strike me as someone whose presidental administration will supprt non-petroleum/fossil fuel causes

Resign, Rumsfeld !Dear Friend, The images of abuse in a U.S. run Iraqi prison couldn't be more disturbing.
Disturbing too is that Donald Rumsfeld and the Department of Defense knew about this and didn't take immediate action and didn't even inform the leaders in Congress. John Kerry has called for Donald Rumsfeld to resign -- and the Kerry Campaign is asking us to show support for his decision by endorsing his statement here:

Re:DMCA
Vote for Nader, Get Bush!
Much as I dislike Kerry's positions on a number of issues (including the DMCA and Globalization) he is far, far, far better than Bush. Since Nader has no chance in hell of being elected it is important to vote for Kerry (even if you don't like everything he says) in order to keep Bush from winning.
In 2000 a lot of people (myself included) voted for Nader because they opposed Gore's right-of-center positions on many issues and the result has been record deficits, prepetual war, general outrage from the international comunity and the gradual roll back of our civil liberties and constiutional rights.
Recent polls predict that Nader will get far less than the number of votes needed to get federal matching funds for the Green Party and that "his 2004 candidacy a much greater threat to the Democratic Party's candidate than to George W. Bush" (Source: The Gallup Organization, Summary, subscription required to view full article.) So don't kid yourself a vote for Nader is a vote for Bush and the last thing we (the people of the US) need is four more years of King George II.

Re:/. sums it up nicely for once
Ok, here's a topical example with links to spell it out.
Go here and look at "A New Approach to Control Spiraling Health Care Costs". Kerry wants the government to pick up 75% of catastrophic claims, which accounts for 15% of health insurers' costs, in return for a promise that they will pass the savings on to consumers. This is just cost shifting with a shallow guarantee of savings on the other end. Years of hospitals double-charging Medicare and Medicaid show that the government has real difficulty figuring out how to oversee health care businesses. I have no doubt that insurance companies will find ways to make it look like they are passing on savings without lowering premiums a damn cent. As a free-market guy, you understand that's exactly what the companies will do thanks to the profit motive. Next, look at "Lowering Costs with New Technology", which gives a "technology bonus" as an incentive to health care providers and insurers to update their procedures and switch to electronic records. In other words, we'll pay hospitals to switch to electronics across the board, regardless of whether it saves them money now or in the long run. Even if it does save money, what about the companies that have already done the analysis and made a sound investment in technology? It seems like they'll be left in the cold, while the ones dragging their feet get a bonus for doing so.
Kerry's "Give Every American Access to the Same Plan As Members of Congress" makes more sense. Edwards' has a similar plan, except it emphasizes competition between the national and private systems by giving tax credits based on family status and income. These can be spent on enrolling in the federal system or to pay for private insurance through the employer (essentially health vouchers). This too is cost shifting, but since the savings are in the consumers' hands, there's no chance they will be lost due to creative accounting by insurance companies. Edwards "Require Parents to Cover Their Children" covers the case of parents who have enough money to cover their children but don't bother to out of greed. Localized responsibility seems more logical than giving the responsibility to a blanket federal program. Edwards also wants to support small businesses by helping them pool their resources to get insurance. Having known people working for small businesses, I realize how much of a problem this is. Kerry is silent on this issue.
Now the real kicker: look at Edwards' "Stop the Hospital and Insurance Company Paper Chase". Wow, someone gets it and is actually trying to fix the market. Rather than duplicate tests and records that hospitals have no real motivation to share (well, they pretend to share, but effectively they don't), force providers to use a compatible standard so your information can move with you. Now you can move to a different hospital without a huge switching cost. Unlike Kerry's "just spend money on technology", Edwards' plan should actually achieve a cost reduction by commodity information storage. It also allows the hospital to save costs itself: rather than being locked into a proprietary storage format from a vendor, they could choose to change to a better system without losing their data. Note the similarity here with proposed OSS use in governments; They care less about the "free software" aspect and more about the open, accessible data storage guarantees.
Edwards also wants to increase the nursing workforce. This is a huge problem right now, which again, Kerry does not address. Kerry's main point that Edwards lacks is the "Strong Enforceable Patients' Bill of Rights". However, his idea sounds more like a Doctor's Bill of Rights to me. Right now, doctors and hospitals are as much a part of the problem as insurance companies. They have no incentive to cut costs, because they don't actually pay them. Most in the profession are well meaning -
Correct...
John Kerry served in Vietnam, and afterwards appeared in several protests against the war, most famously throwing (fake) war medals back over the fence of the White House. At roughly the same time, Jane Fonda was protesting by propagandizing for the North Vietnamese, using her celebrity status to help draw support the communist government there. Many of my father's generation who served in the military see her as committing traitorous acts, so this doctored photo invokes a very strong reaction by linking Fonda and Kerry.
I find it interesting that while the two never personally met, they both engaged in protesting with roughly the same intensity against the government. After learning that the photo was doctored, many uneducated voters may discount Kerry's years of protests, and might actually think he supports the military.... Should be interesting in the fall. -
You americans... also have problem!
When I saw in Lessig's blog what presidential candidate Mr Kerry has to say about enforcing IP rights I really shuddered.

Re:Boom in Computer-linked home security devices
I followed the link in your sig, and Jesus Christ, Kucinich?!? Give me a fucking break. Kucinich reminds me of this rat I saw in the subway last weekend, and the rat was dead, long dead. It was twitching, yes, but only because it was busy being eaten by another rat. I almost vomited when I saw that, and Kucinich, likewise, makes me want to puke every time I see his shriveled head, and if I didn't manage to gag back my puke, I'd be sure to puke on one of his supporters, such as you; God knows they all need a shower anyway, though then again, what's a little vomit to someone who hasn't bathed or cut his hair since the sprightly age of ten, when Nader embarrassed the Greens with 2% of the popular vote? Grow the fuck up and throw your meager weight behind someone who can actually win, like John Kerry.

Re:Republicans, republicans, republicans
I hate republicans as much as the next guy, but dude: democrats took more than three times as much money from the entertainment industry as republicans in the 2002 elections. Their number one recipient was some guy from Massachusetts named Kerry, who correct me if I'm wrong doesn't tend to agree too often with Bush and his cronies. In fact, every single congressman who is a Democratic presidential candidate is in the top 5--Edward #3, Lieberman (who favors censoring TV and records, that little sellout whore) #5, Gephardt #1, Kucinich #3. Hell even Dean is second only to W in total dollars received--and he's, technically speaking, no more than an unemployed migrant orator, at the moment!
:) So blaming this all on republicans is, I'm sorry, bullshit. Oh and by the way, Gore took $250,000 more from the enterainment industry than Bush in 2000. -
Artice Text (reprinted without permission)Is there any significance to what Web server/platform combinations 2004 presidential candidates are using?
As we swing into the thick of the 2004 electoral playoffs, it's interesting to see what kinds of platforms are running under the candidates' official campaign Web sites. Netcraft has a handy feature called "What's that site running?" that lets us see combinations of Web servers and OS platforms. So here's a quick rundown, in alphabetical order:
- George W. Bush:
Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000
- Wesley Clark:
Apache on Linux
- Howard
Dean: Apache on FreeBSD
- John
Edwards: Microsoft IIS "behind a computer running NetWare"
- Richard
Gephardt: Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000
- John Kerry:
Apache on Linux
- Dennis Kucinich
Apache on Linux
- Carol
Mosely-Braun: Apache on FreeBSD
- Al Sharpton:
Apache on Solaris 8
- Joe Lieberman: Apache on FreeBSD
For what it's worth, the Republican National Committee is running Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000, while the Democratic National Committee is running Apache on Linux.
As of this writing, November 5, 2003, the RNC has an uptime of 4.26 days (maximum of 39.04) and a 90-day moving average of 16.91. The DNC has an uptime of 445.02 days (also the maximum) and a 90-day moving average of 395.38 days.
Draw your own conclusions.
Doc Searls is Senior Editor of Linux Journal.

Re:Solutions, please
Rather than repeat, and possibly misstate, the positions of the candidates I'd suggest you take a look at each of the candidates issue statements.
Most of the candidates have answers (or ideas) for each of these questions posted on their page. There is no single unified platform for the democratic party at this point.
