Re:ecryptfs+Dropbox is a nice solution
encfs works on windows, see
http://members.ferrara.linux.it/freddy77/encfs.html -
Re:gmail
Please don't knock DropBox, configure up your clients up with Boxcryptor for Windows which uses EncFS (opensource). You can only use the opensource support for windows using Dokan. http://members.ferrara.linux.it/freddy77/encfs.html Under Mac and Linux you can also use EncFS. Assume the cloud is compromised with a limited SLA, but a jolly useful resource.

Re:Linux
Or don't use containers but a filebased encryptions scheme (like encfs).
That's how I prefer to do it: EncFS for a data directory that I then back up with an online service (SpiderOak*). As a bonus, because it works within a filesystem, it retains all features of that filesystem, so it should work well even on FAT or NTFS filesystems.
There's also a Windows port that I didn't know existed until I searched just now: encfs4win
* SpiderOak claims everything is encrypted and they can't decrypt the data, but this way I know they can't.

NoSQL, half way between standard SQL and unix command line, stores data in plain text files

Re:Why?
I am (not the only) responsible for a database-driven Web site for KDE translators to Italian. We use the database to keep track of statistics and generate some meaningful numbers such as what has a certain translator to do and how much work is left to the next release.
According to my experience, read-only access cannot trash the data, but can trash the server. Once I tested a non-trivial query, and it seemed it would take forever to complete. So I Ctrl-C'ed and went away. Next thing I know, the admin contacts me a few hours later and tells me that the query was still running and brought the server (which is very graciously hosted by the Pisan LUG) to a halt. I would guess this is the main problem the original poster was thinking of.

Re:Necessary?
Don't say this aloud, but the GPL is not worth the bits it's written on in France. The FSF states very good reasons not to translate the GPL in other languages, but in France if a contract is not in French, it's not worth anything. There is a law about this, maybe someone will provide a link (sorry my French is not that good).
I was told this by people that have been working on the subject---I help out the KDE-i18n-it team, and the issue of translating the GPL surfaces every now and then, and one point made is what I reported here.
I would really like to know whether this separate licence you mention is in French, any chances you find it?

Re:These are the people behind the actions.
Wow - another neat google hit from that list:
``I'm not familiar with any type of ligation that is any more costly than patent litigation,'' says R. Duff Thompson, vice president and general counsel of the WordPerfect Corporation. But Thompson's greatest fear is that software patents will wipe out young, independent programmers, who until now have been the software industry's source of inspiration. Imagine what happens, says Thompson, when ``some 23-year-old kid who has a terrific idea in a piece of software is hammered by a demand letter from someone holding a patent.''

Re:There's help for this... sorta
For a more serious one, you might want to try out Gringotts. I really like it, and I would say it's adequately secure.

Re:Don't visit msnbot.com, howeverApparently msnbot.com has been owned by Go Daddy Software
Go Daddy is a registrar. It's not owned by them. You need to query Go Daddy's whois server to see the real owner, which you can do here or by using a recent version of the command line whois tool..

If I owned Madster...
I wouldn't have my own daughter parade around like that.
I say this of course, because she has a spare tire. ::drum roll::
Really though, Madster must be low on funds, because you can hire perfect 10's with much lower morals to do this stuff. I mean, look at the Linux Girl. Yum. -
Re:Device Drivers
certain hardware manufacturers utterly refuse to support anything other than Windows
Since you mentioned you did some coding, you may want to check out Linux Device Drivers plus some of their other kernel tweaking/modding books.
Buying a book isn't going to get her the board spec, unfortunately. To get the job done quickly, she'll need the board spec.
Otherwise, she could start by using the generic pci driver to probe the board's parameters in freebsd, or use phob to observe the board's parameters.
This would be an excellent chore for a grad student, as it would provide her with a useful skill while not really interrupting her studies of, e.g. The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds

Programming And ArtThis is a topic that interests me a great deal. When I got my first computer, a ZX81, pretty much the first programs I wrote as a I learned to code where programmes that put pretty graphics on the screen.
My first "art" release (knocked up after I finished my work on X-COM Apocalypse) was THROB, which was a purely visual experience, and did not include the source as part of the "experience".
My second "art" release, described on an Italian Linux site as "deliciously incompressible"
was created for the International Obfuscated C Code Contest 2000 in collaboration with a friend, and did get some recognition. It is "THADGAVIN, and it won the "Most Portable Output" award. It was also featured on a the French alternative art scene website Téléférique, and discussed on K5 in that context.
As for the stuff on display here, I find it uninspired artistically, and unimpressive technically. There is very little "art" to the source code, and very little original about the output. I suspect that they got to be shown in a reputable gallery purely on the basis that they are "in". Trendy art students, part of the art scene. -
Re:All I want for Christmas...
I want views!!! Precious views!! I need to secure certain data from the prying eyes of account managers and sales folk.
Sounds to me like you're really trying to hammer that socket-head capscrew into place, rather than finding an appropriate Allen wrench.
It's amazing to me how many people in the open source community continually try to force mySQL into doing jobs it's clearly not up to. This is especially puzzling, since there *are* good, modern, high-performance, high-function databases out there, things like Postgresql, Interbase, and the Sleepycat Berkeley DB (not SQL, but really fast and solid) among many others.
For quick, dirty, and fast, without the hassles of dealing with SQL at all, there are options like NoSQL and Starbase, both of which are based on the Stream/Modifier concept of the original /rdb that allows fast, flexible database operations and allowing the use of the full power of the Unix environment. ( It's easy, leverages a zillion other existing tools, and everything you learn is directly applicable to anything else you do in a Unix environment.)
It seems most people want SQL just because it somehow legitimizes their project as "serious", when in reality, it often just adds undesirable complexity and support cost. SQL is often unnecessary and actually undesirable, if you allow yourself to consider the possible benefits of NOT using a SQL database.
Also, keep in mind that *any* database (and especially ones that are already very fast, like BerkeleyDB or Starbase) is lighting fast in RAM, and memory is now cheap enough to make putting the whole DB in memory a very do-able thing: A gigabyte or several of database is BIG, and easily supportable on very affordable server hardware.
And of course, there is a reason those commercial database companies exist: They often offer capabilities that open source users may never have. I am looking right now at a new application which will be *much* faster and cheaper based on Intersystems' unique Cache database than it eould be on any of the more common big names. It's important to choose the right tool for the job. (In this case, I need lots of transactions in a very large sparsely populated database, Cache is excellent there, an order of magnitude better than Oracle or DB2, which is why Cache is the leading DB choice for electronic medical records systems, and has been for years.)
MySQL is not the answer to every database problem. Or even most of them, truth be told. Personally, I find it to be a minimally competent, fussy, and underpowered tool. It's good for some things, but to be honest, I've always thought its appeal had more to do with being the first real open source SQL DB than with being good.
As always, this boils down to choosing the right tool for the job. Not exactly rocket science, but something way too many people don't bother to do. -

Re:DeCSS = 1st amendmentStill, do you think there's many people mirroring DeCSS in Zimbabwe?
Who talked about Zimbabwe? There are other countries besides the US and Zimbabwe: Austria, the Christmas Islands, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israrel, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Nieu, Norway, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Tonga, The United Kingdom, just to name a few
you can't deny that the US is a significant portion of the west.
However, lately, Europe has rediscovered its self esteem, and doesn't hesitate to occasionnally give the finger to the US (see recent Echelon investigation, and some recent crypto decisions).

Mirrors part 1Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Temporary restraining order DENIED!
Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.
We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.
Here is the EFF's stance on this case.
Save a copy of this web page now!
We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.
Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.
Here is a 2600 story on this.
Explanation on legality of this information
The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.
Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:
NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
Current Mirrors Last updated: Wed, Jan 19, 12:13am EST
Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceWe apologize for the length of time between updates. This list has gotten quite large and thus more difficult to maintain.
Much thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

Mirrors part 1Note: This mirror list has been copied from http://www.humpin.org/decss/, on January 2nd 2000 13:13 GMT
Mirrors since 28-Dec-99 added by me.
To my main DVD page (containing list of lists of mirrors) Visit Humpin!
If you need a REAL reason to host these files, try reading this. Truth has never been more purely distilled.Save a copy of this web page now!
Current Mirrors Last updated: Fri, Dec 31, 8:18pm EST
Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceMuch thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

OOPS - Trying Humpin list againYou have one bat and there are 100 million holes Visit Humpin!
If you need a REAL reason to host these files, try reading this. Truth has never been more purely distilled.Save a copy of this web page now!

Mirrors - Now more than 70!!!!Oh yeah
Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Explanation on legality of this information:
Attention
www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files.
UPDATE: Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
I have taken it upon myself to mirror the mirrors. So until such time as the hounds of hell come a-knocking at my door, I present for you this list:

Explanation on legality of this information:
The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site are purely written by 3rd parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods, which is, again, completely legal. This software and information below make it possible for people who legally obtained their DVD movies to view them on their Linux systems.
Attention
www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files.

It was written by authors who expressly permitted and encourage the redistribution of this software and information. The purpose of this software is not, I repeat not illegal copying of DVD disks. Writing information about the way a certain protection scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or one of its members. The sources and programs on this site are purely written by 3rd parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods, which is, again, completely legal. This software and information below make it possible for people who legally obtained their DVD movies to view them on their Linux systems.
